Onavo Protect - VPN Security App

Onavo Protect helps keep you and your data safe when you browse and share information on the web. This powerful app helps keep you safe by understanding when you visit potentially malicious or harmful websites and giving you a warning. It also helps keep your details secure when you login to websites or enter personal information such as bank accounts and credit card numbers. Onavo Protect works to: • Warn you when you visit potentially malicious or harmful sites • Help secure your personal information when you're on public Wi-Fi • Add an extra layer of protection to all of your mobile data traffic by using our VPN How it works To provide this layer of protection, Onavo uses a VPN to establish a secure connection to direct all of your network communications through Onavo’s servers. As part of this process, Onavo collects your mobile data traffic. This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data. Because we're part of Facebook, we also use this info to improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and services people value, and build better experiences.

How can you be sure that this app isn’t just another virus upgrade. Or is that what they knew we would think. The snake that’s eating it’s own tale...
  • Wow cool app 5/5

  • Privacy Concerns 1/5

Usually I skim over the terms of service, but early on in the fine print is a lot of information I found alarming. From what I can tell, this app wants to collect information about my iPhone, my location, apps I have installed and how I use them, websites I visit, etc. Then I see it’s a Facebook company. A quick internet search brings up an article about their “controversial” VPN service. No thanks! I’ll go with a trusted VPN like TunnelBear instead.
  • No problem with this vpn 5/5

  • Does exactly what it says 5/5

    By everylittlebeat
Based off of other reviews regarding this app I'm starting to question are people simply uninformed because they choose to or is paranoia really taking over their common senses. This application does exactly what it says and what it's meant for. VPNs are used to keep your data private from websites, protect yourself when using open public Wi-Fi hotspots and change your IP location if needed. If you know what they're used for they definitely enhance your browsing experience. It's not a malware anti-virus application, guys.
  • Next!!! 1/5

Don’t download this VPN. Check the Privacy Policy . They collects your data (information about your mobile applications and data usage, including the applications installed on your device, the websites you visit and the amount of data you use. Also they track all of your activity.

    By Bfgame
ONLY DOWNOAD THIS APP TO RATE IT BADLY!!! This app is literal spywate, and will send your data to Facebook. Do not use under any circumstances. Use a trustworthy VPN that is rated over 4.5 stars.
  • Fraudulent per news report! Not a virus tool! 1/5

    By DB799703
This app freely shares your personal information with Facebook free of charge. This does not remove viruses and does not perform like a true VPN. Do your research and you'll be shocked at the misdirection used to get you to use this app.
  • Scam Scam Scam Scam 1/5

    By FishnRide
100% a scam owned by Facebook to steal your information and all activity on your phone.
  • Another Facebook spyware garbage 1/5

Sure, download this app so Facebook can see exactly what websites you visit and everything else you do online. For "your" protection.

If you install this then everything you do can and WILL get tracked by FACEBOOK even when not using the Facebook app.
  • Shady reviews here 1/5

    By EminIsrafil
It’s hard to believe all these reviews claiming this app somehow saved them from a virus. It would be interesting for Apple to do a review of where these reviews are coming from and if they are authentic.

why would you ever think this is okay
  • Corporate Spyware 1/5

    By nlamb80
Do NOT install this. It routes ALL of your phone data through a VPN run by Facebook, who then turns around and sells everything you do on your phone to the highest bidder. Marketing this as “Privacy” in the FB app? You should be ashamed, Zuckerberg. Can’t wait for the laws to catch up with this predatory garbage. There are other VPN apps out there which are legit, please do not use this cesspool of an app.
  • A VPN owned by Facebook? No thanks. 1/5

Title says it all and if you think that Facebook has the protection of your privacy in their best interest then you should think again.

Unlike a typical VPN, Onavo Protect (from a company Facebook purchased in 2013) explicitly gives itself permission to mine your data. “As part of this process, Onavo collects your mobile data traffic. This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data. Because we’re part of Facebook, we also use this info to improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and services people value, and build better experiences.”
  • Had started using it before Facebook bought it 1/5

    By MGunduzz
But obviously I wasn't notified when Facebook bought this VPN company. I used this for years, and didn't have the slightest clue that Facebook owned it. Thankfully I had deleted it over a year ago, but what they collected will stay. I will not be using a shill company's app that sells all their data and is owned by Facebook.
  • Owned by Facebook 1/5

    By 4nrMike
Just so you know, if you use this you give Facebook access to all you traffic. And any review that talks about an iPhone virus is a fake review, iOS is already a sandboxes system.
  • Do not download 1/5

Facebook aggregates data from this service.
  • This is Facebook SPYWARE!!! 1/5

    By M3mph1sKyle
This may do what it advertises, but it does so while defeating the entire purpose by giving Facebook all your browsing data!!
  • Facebook uses this to track everything you do 1/5

    By QuintB5
How do you get past a sandboxed system? Make a VPN, it seems. Facebook uses the data gathered by this to track every single thing you do- not just in safari, but every single network connection you make. If you can’t do it in airplane mode, they can see what you’re doing. It’s a good VPN functionality wise. It’s abhorrent privacy wise. Highly recommend PIA or something of that nature.
  • This is a facebook owned data collection app 1/5

    By Erik253
Facebook has added a Protect item to a screen in its iOS app that lists Facebook services. Tapping Protect takes you to an App Store page for a VPN called Onavo Protect that admits that it is owned by Facebook and “collects your mobile data traffic.” Worse, 12.5 million iOS users may already be using Onavo Protect. Read the article on TidBits.
  • This is Facebook Spyware 1/5

    By TimmyGUNZ
Folks - if you’re looking for a VPN, do NOT use this one. Facebook owns them and will track everything you do online and use it for their own advantage. Use an app like Nord VPN, Encrypt.me, TunnelBear or any other trusted VPN that has your true privacy in mind.
  • Facebook owns Onavo. Used to mine data 1/5

    By hamsandwich!
This app is owned by Facebook. It’s an attempt to gather data about your phone usage (and perhaps why Facebook users are leaving in droves). This is not a security app. Think about this— why is it free when every other VPN service is not?
  • Owned by Facebook, will monitor you! 1/5

    By blarhggglle
This is owned an operated by Facebook, whose only purpose for existing is to mine and monitor your activity. THIS IS NOT A SECURITY APP.
  • Facebooks vampiric VPN 1/5

Please take a second to read the next sentence. IF YOU ARENT PAYING FOR THE PRODUCT, YOU ARE THE PAYMENT. Handing over your web traffic to any free vpn service ensures that they are selling personal information or whatever they can mine from your device to third parties. Purchased by Facebook in 2013, here is a passage from their terms and service, to save you some trouble: “As part of this process, Onavo collects your mobile data traffic. This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data. Because we’re part of Facebook, we also use this info to improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and services people value, and build better experiences.” Be wary.
  • This is Facebook spyware 1/5

    By AjaxEroticA
This app allows Facebook (who owns Onavo) to intercept ALL your mobile data and do whatever they want with it. Don’t trust a free VPN. Try Private Internet Access or one of the many other paid VPN services that actually protect you online.
  • A total and complete SCAM 1/5

    By brandonee
This app is a complete scam, all these fake reviews about viruses on people’s iPhones.... really? We don’t have Android phones here... if you scroll down and read the description for the app ALL of your traffic will go through their servers and be provided to Facebook. For pretty much analytics on how you use your phone... don’t touch this app with a 10 foot pole!!!!
  • Owned by Facebook 1/5

    By jlepine12
Read the fine print. They’re owned by Facebook and are still monitoring your data usage. This app is NOT designed for security, just another reason for Facebook to invade your privacy and target more ads.

    By Mattstar69
Currently Facebook can only take your information when using their apps however this app or more specifically the company listed as its creator was acquired by FB last year this app allow Facebook to take information from you in other apps. Which is why its free. The money they make by tracking trends as well as information the sell to advertisers more than covers your app, its maintenance and upkeep. If it’s too good to be true and even more obvious if it’s owned by Facebook there’s a catch. So if you’re cool with Facebook collections information outside the Facebook app then have fun. You should also be aware that iPhones while not impossible but it’s very rare for them to get a virus. So much so Apple actually discourages you from spending money on anti virus software unless you enjoy wasting your money.

Facebook is using a VPN program to track all inbound and outbound connections because wavering membership is gonna lead to lost revenue. If you’re not paying for the product, you are the product. Don’t be fooled.

    By Sktch987
This app/company is owned by Facebook. Its ONLY purpose is to get you to download this VPN in order to track everything you do on your phone and send that data back to Facebook for advertising. This app routes your web browsing and app usage through Facebook servers so that Facebook knows everything you're doing on your phone. This app is Spyware disguised as a security app.
  • Terrible. Run away. Better free options elsewhere 1/5

    By Josey444
This routes ALL your traffic through Facebook servers. Hahaha no thanks. There are so many better options than routing everything and anything you do online through Facebook. Terrible. And are the other reviews fake? Writing about how this helped them with viruses. What? Is "abaddom-hok-perditor " a real person with a real review writing this: "Who is the Most Proficient when it comes to cutting edge security and security technology? Who has AND does have your back as an end user an Not the bottom line for corporate dollars?"
  • another facebook app that tracks your usage 1/5

    By DGBooster
Onavo is owned by facebook, and tracks your usage and browsing habits so that it can serve up you mobile habits to ad providers. Straight up shady. They don’t even disclose that they are a Facebook owned company. There are better apps out there than this
  • Spyware with a fancy name!! 1/5

    By CaioSMarinho
This is just a total scam! It offer “protection” (let me protect your data from everyone... but give it all to Facebook) in exchange for your personal info not only in what you are doing inside the Facebook app but all over your phone so no this is a total scam since that is exactly what you want to avoid when using VPNs on your phone!

  • Facebook is Very Shady 1/5

    By aoinbaew
Even though it’s not disclosed here, this app is owned and operated by Facebook. While Onavo promises to protect you online, what it actually does is allow its owner, Facebook, to track everywhere you go and everything you do online, including which websites you visit, which apps you use and how much data you use. Very shady of you, Facebook!
  • SCAM for Facebook 1/5

    By RaageBone
Don't listen to the other reviews saying this app is top quality. It doesn't matter how well it hides your data from websites you visit when it shares all that data with FACEBOOK, who owns it, and mysterious other parties. Onavo is this year's hottest app to share your personal information with the companies you loath most. It collects and shares data including: installed apps, app usage (particularly of their competitors snapchat, twitter, and instagram), the websites you visit, and the amount of data you use. Don't buy into this trash VPN, if you can even call it that. This is a SCAM run by facebook!

    By Sashazur
iPhones are much more secure than regular computers or Android phones and don't really get viruses. If you see a virus warning on an iPhone, it's bogus. The real purpose of this app is that it lets Facebook learn even more about what sites and apps you use - so that they can get even better at influencing your behavior, and sell even more of your data to advertisers, corporations, and governments. If you avoid Facebook because you value your privacy, then you also need to avoid this app.
  • Facebook is watching 1/5

    By Aidan.S
To anyone thinking of downloading this app let you be warned it is owned by Facebook and they are taking every single piece of data sent through this VPN and analyzing it so please use any other VPN app but this one

  • Super Shady Facebook-Owned App 1/5

    By DYork55
First off, I have never used this app, and I’m not the type to salt up someone or something without so much as having given them a fair shot. What I do know, however, is that this app “Onovo” or whatever ridiculous name zuckerberg gave his newest (effectively) shell company - is wholly and incontrovertibly owned and ran by Facebook, Inc. and it tracks not only your whereabouts and daily routines (and atypical behavior/routines but also TRACKS ALL OF YOUR PHONE APP USAGE. Wow. Take a bow, you less-talented bill gates wannabe - you found the one line that no one thought you’d have the gall to cross. Shame on you, facebook, I’m so done with you creepers.
