Great app! 5/5
By bedlam and drudgery
I've been using this app for several years. I share a single account across all my mobile devices. Instead of needing to buy paper maps of things like National Geographic trail maps, I can buy them for the same price in this app, and have them gps enabled, traceable, and portable.
My local open spaces org recently uploaded all their trail maps to the Avenza store -- and they are free to download!
Also a big fan of the Redwood Hikes company trail maps. Great for pretty much everywhere in California that has redwoods and hiking trails...and cheaper to purchase here than buying the printed copies.
I've tried pretty much every mapping and tracking program. If you want free maps like open source stuff, there are fine sources like Motion X. But if you want commercially available maps, I can't think of a better app in the App Store.
Complete waste of time 1/5
Don't even bother.
This is not user friendly and the cost per map is a little out of control. You only get portions of a management unit so it is in fact useless. Heaven forbid you need to see what's next to the very small map you purchased. Just not good. Avoid it and buy a real map
This app takes free pdfs and charges you to use them. You are much better off using something like Google Maps or Maps.me. In this apps you can download areas in great detail and your gps will still work the same way it works in the avenza app. The biggest difference is that the other apps are free! And I'm not sure about Google Maps but with maps.me you can actually get turn by turn directions while you are offline. You can even create a new rout and get directions offline!
Save yourself the money and disappointment. Skip this app and look elsewhere.
Too expensive now 1/5
I have switched to Topo Nomad. It does the same thing, but only has a one time charge of 7.99. It is easy to use once get past the learning curve.
Charging subscription add maps? 1/5
This was my go to app for maps. I bought a bunch of the njnytc hiking maps, and didn't bat an eye that I couldn't export them. But I won't be spending anymore money in this app, now that they went to a subscription service. I would pay a onetime fee to upgrade or a small charge for each map uploaded, but definitely not a monthly subscription to upload a couple of maps a year.
What a joke 1/5
The subscription fee is a joke.
Preview maps not legible 2/5
By KY prodigal
Unlike other reviewers, I don't mind paying for maps. However the "so called" preview map is blurred to the point I have no idea if it is the correct map that I want to buy. If you want me to pay for a map then you're going to have to let me view it first.
Who asks for money upfront for a free app? 1/5
Must have had my stupid face on when I thought this would be a good app to download (came on the advice of a friend who has used it for awhile). Maybe this is a new enhancement- ask for credit card info before downloading a free app. Pretty sure I won't need it.
I used to love this app. Now I can't even import my own maps anymore unless I relent to their subscription model. Seriously, this came as a surprise to me after the update.
Does Avenza really need to generate MORE revenue off of this once slick app? We already pay for some store maps why not allow us to import our own for no fee? How do I get the "other" version back on my ipad?
29.99/ YEAR!! to have more than 3 maps?! 2/5
I'd go to 5 stars if there was a middle option, say $4.99 to have even 6 maps at once. At that price per year then 10 maps is fair. Those of us doing wildfire fighting need more than 3 per assignment and we don't need to get committed to ongoing charges that are high enough to make us quit using this, the moment a competitor comes. Please?
Come on, Avenza 1/5
Give me a break. I've bought lots of maps from your store. I've spent over $100 this year alone, especially the National Geographic series. I'll likely buy more in the future. Why not give such customers the ability to import maps for free?
Nope. They won't give me a break.
But thank you for responding via email with a detailed explanation of your business model. I appreciate your need for a steady income stream to operate. But I really dislike the high-price of a yearly subscription to download "custom" maps. I won't do it. I'll just buy the occasional maps I need in the future.
I do hope you're successful and stay in business. I really like the app.
Edited Review 5/5
Arguably most important App I have. Must have been in very bad mood when I left the last one. Top 5 things about it: GPS orienting, creating waypoints by dropping pins or plugging in coordinates, sewing multiple quads together, functionality even in airplane mode a and measuring distances. I bet ive downloaded free or cheapish maps over hundred times for hiking, backcountry skiing, mountaineering, mtb, etc.
By 10yr customer
$29.99 to import maps I own.
I suggest we lobby USFS to stop the free advertising and support of these thrives.
Frustratingly close to useful 1/5
I can deal with the mix of free and paid maps. Charging to import your own maps is majorly lame but whatever.
Where they REALLY dropped the ball is making it impossible to preview before purchasing and making it hard to see/select exact areas to purchase. So here I am, the perfect customer on a road trip trying to buy maps for backpacking trips, and my choice is to randomly buy maps that might be in the right area or declare the app a piece-o-price-gouging lameness. You can tell from the single star my opinion.
They need to re-think their user interface for purchases and seriously re-think how preview works.
Great when I actually works 1/5
By Elk hunter 83
It may be some user error but I'm importing the map I want to use and it's in the que but wouldn't populate into the app. I redid it multiple times and now I'm out of free imports so it wants me to pay for an app that hasn't even worked for me yet!
No maps 1/5
By Fair and honest news --- Fox
There are no maps in this program. Total sales gimmick. Waste of time and energy
Horrible decision! 1/5
I loved when it was PDF app...then, they follwed up the name change to Avenza maps by removing the one feature that peope were using this app for...unless you are willing to pay a annual fee.
It was good as a free, in-app purchase app; and horrible as a paid app.
Fees to add your own maps! 1/5
Why make someone pay to add something that they already paid for? This is ridiculous that you have moved to making people pay for imports. I'm a firefighter and our agency previously used this app till they started charging fees to import your own maps. We are on the move all the time switching from fire to fire, we need to give other people the maps when necessary but can't because they have to pay now. It's a bad business call if you're trying to make more money or have a following that use your app. Because from what I see all you're doing is making more people mad and losing more customers. You lost a whole firefighting community where I live that used to use this app. Google maps is what we use now if anyone cares to know.
Usage costs 1/5
By singletrack user
I never add bad reviews as I have never written a review. However, I feel I need to in this case. The forrest service and other public agencies have used this platform to provide maps to the public. They advertise it on public websites etc. I don't mind purchasing maps or an app and have done so numerous times through Avenza. But this 29.99 a year is ridiculous to unlock the ability to import. From a functional standpoint I have found this app does not track that well I would recommend users go to MotionX-GPS or another topographic map app. They work well and don't gouge you every year for cash. The state and feds should also remove their maps from these price gougers app and not advertise for them.
Really weak move 1/5
I've been using this program for many years and on a recent update it now forces me to become a pro user just upload my own maps that I make myself.
Update: I got a nice reply from the developer that I can upload 3 maps at a time in the new version without becoming a pro user. This is still a pain as I use this program for work and often have more than 3 maps needed on site visits in the field with no access to internet. I fully understand the developers point of view but the new version is very limiting compared to what I have been using for years. It feels like a bait and switch.
Very poor quality topo maps 1/5
Unlike many negative reviews mine has nothing to do with being upset about Avenza moving to a pay per map model. That's fine to me. I'm happy to pay a few dollars for a useful tool. What upsets me is that I have paid money for a worthless map. What is described as "the finest available" map is actually a low resolution image that is quite useless. Zooming into the map reveals the low quality image. The topo elevations are 100% illegible, as are most road names. Google maps provides more detail and features than this map did, and that's a free. And since google has added a feature to download portions of a map for offline use, I used G maps more than the Avenza maps. Again, happy to pay money when it is worth it. This was not worth it.
Great App, miss free imports 2/5
I have been using this app for about a year and it works really well, I am pretty happy with it.
I subtracted 2 stars because they took away the ability to import maps from the web for free, and now you have to pay a subscription fee. Not cool. I would understand if the app referenced them once you imported, but I'm not sure the app is capable of that.
I subtracted another 1 star because there aren't enough maps available in the store. If you're looking for something popular, it's probably there. But if you're looking for a trail that isn't fairly popular, you might have a hard time finding a map in the store. Had this happen a few times, and it's more frustrating now that I have to pay to import.
All in all this is an awesome app.
Subscription model but no free maps 1/5
You're limited to 3 uploads of your own maps or pay a $30 ANNUAL subscription and they still charge you for their maps. Nope.
Limited free edition works but... 3/5
By People poker
The free edition works ok and is a little complicated to save your maps in folders.
Also it's hard to switch from one map to another when different types of maps are located together in one location.
Enable the ability to Import my own PDF files for $29.00!?!?
I don't think so. Too much unless after the 1st year you go back to the standard free ap version and keep the ability to use the downloaded files you already have.
Amazing App 5/5
Funny how many people have no idea how useful this app is! It answers the day old question of; Where am I? When you are in the middle of no where and have no service what so ever, just be sure to download the maps before venturing. Also PDF maps can be created and imported with DropBox
Great App 5/5
By Kris Colvin
I do a lot of exploring, and this app is an amazing resource.
My most useful hiking app! 5/5
By Dan Philly
I'm sad to see so many 1 star reviews. I find this app to be indispensable! There are plenty of free maps to download and for the paid maps part of the funds go to the map makers (the people maintaining the trails in most cases). I love the ability to plan my routes ahead of time and then export those lines to KML files and check the elevation gain via google earth on my PC. My only gripe is that the + and - buttons in the measure feature are too small and too close together so when I draw lines I often inadvertently hit the minus button. Please fix that!
Not impressed 1/5
I bought a paper lake map and saw the note 'this map is available on your iOS or android device'. I followed the instruction and found that they wanted me to pay a few bucks for the same map. That was it, not interested. I will continue to use the iPhone map coordinates and the paper map I bought.
It's worth noting that I will pay for enhancements... but subscription service fees and poor reviews is a red flag. I feel like I wasted 30 mins of my life trying to figure out the benefit of having this app is. Save your frustration and don't get this app until some effort has been made in improving it.
Extremely Disappointing 1/5
By Spontaneous Adventurer
I have purchased numerous paper versions of USGS, NatGeo, and Benchmark Recreational Maps. The PDF versions in this app are terrible, not at all what is available from competitors and a huge disappointment. I'm bailing before I waste any more money on this.
Not wrth it 1/5
Without being able to import anything this app is only a front end for their store. And it has far fewer gps features than most nav apps; basically a pdf viewer. If the paid version CREATED geotiffs it would be worth it, but juust a viewer? Nah.
The new subscription model is ridiculous. 40 dollars a month to upload and use my own maps is outrageous. I will not be using this app anymore.
Why should I pay a subscription to track my GPS on a PDF? Stupid
I paid for this app with specific features, those features have been taken away and now I most pay 30 dollars to Import my own files. Despicable.
Now a yearly subscription nope 1/5
Will never use again.
Company got greedy 1/5
I wrote this app a stellar review in 2012. I own a business that provides geoPDF maps for hunters and USED to recommend this product to my clients. So long Avenza. Charging money for something that you had freely distributed for years places you on the same level as a crack dealer.
Pointless now 1/5
Used to give access for free but now it's ridiculously expensive. I know developer says you can hold 3 maps for free but if you have an iPhone you can save as many PDF maps as you'd like in iBooks for FREE and still have access to them offline. SCAM.
I thought this app was quite good. Being out in the field I found myself using it often, especially when my Juno GPS unit failed. However, there was no forewarning to its avid users about the cost of the new update. After the update, we were limited to two maps and certain other features were disabled unless we paid for it.
Subscription is a joke! 1/5
I am going to write my own app and put it on the app store for Free. I'd pay $30 one time, to save me time writing it, but not annually!
By No more PayPal
What a joke.
Even free forest maps aren't free here.
From Great to Crap 1/5
I use this app to access USGS geo-spatial maps for field geology work. However, the developers decided to change the app significantly without letting the app buyers know of a key change. You have to BUY the free USGS maps thru their store! The developers took a useful app and made it useless to me. Avenza should refund the purchase price for the users who had the prior version (Avenza PDF). I am now looking for another tool to let me use the USGS maps without having to buy a free map!
From amazing to awful real fast!! 1/5
I have had this app forever and it was amazing. I loved being able to import maps and be able to see my location and add points of interest like campsites. This was an amazing app until it forced me to update and know it is utter crap! They want way to much for this app. For the price they want I could spend that money on a gps system! Thank you for ruining your amazing app definitely lost my support. Anyone intrigued in this app don't waste your time.
Zero Stars, I will delete this app 1/5
By Disappointed fan123
Very misleading, I wish I have read the reviews first. It is not free, you have to pay to import any map. Very expensive app.
Great map app 5/5
There are plenty of free maps in the store...I use this for mvum mostly and it's great!
Used to be great,... 1/5
In a recent update Avenza's "extensive market research" led them to conclude that they should try to develop an income stream from people who import more than three free or user supplied maps. So they didn't tell us that previous functionality would be removed when you get the "free update". What an underhanded, cheating, misleading thing to do. I would have gladly paid for a newer version with added features or functionality, and I would gladly pay for new maps. Now I have to pay $30 per year to do what I was able to do last year?? I got cheated.
Suprise subscription "upgrade" 1/5
They added a subscription requirement in v3. This should have been explained and a different version released in the app store. I purchased once. Adding a subscription requirement to an automatic upgrade is poor form.
Too expensive 1/5
$30 for maps! Google is free but they want 30 bucks for maps.
Great app - but not for the price 3/5
Avenza is a great geo-PDF viewer. It has features that are really cool and well executed, but I am disappointed that they overvalued their market worth. If they did a market survey, I'd fire the person who did it. This is a great product and the features are solidly in the $5 range. Not $30 and definitely not $30 annually. The features are cool, but until they are numerous and groundbreaking at scale, they will never be worth the current asking price. I'm rating this 3 stars in hopes they will wake up and correct their error.
Great once upon an older version 1/5
I am a Deputy Sheriff patrolling a county in the area of 3300 square miles of mountains. I used to use this app every day, most notably to locate people during search and rescue missions and to coordinate operations with other agencies. I just attempted to download updated radio coverage maps and they now want me to pay $30.00 a year. Whoever made this decision is helping to make the world a lot more dangerous by limiting the ability for firefighter, EMTs, pilots, law enforcement, and search and rescue teams. The hunt is on for a new mapping app, it was great while it lasted.
