Great resource 4/5
We use this for planning group backpack trips. If you download map you can follow progress on the map as you go along. Who will download the map onto an iPad in the boys can all take a look at where we are in relation to where we’re going. It’s a big morale booster. And much easier to see then a GPS screen
Good App 5/5
Meets my needs for mvums
Forest Service OHV Trail Maps for the 21st century 4/5
Great way to explore the forest and know if the trails you are on are legal. Needs to have a better way to locate the current MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map) for a given area but is way better than the paper map. Would also like the option to layer MVUM over a topo or have them tiled as a single layer.
Do not update! 1/5
By Blue Zork
Features have been removed from the free version: only three of your own maps can be loaded without paying for a subscription -- not a one time purchase, a SUBSCRIPTION to use your OWN maps! Avoid!
Not perfect but getting better - especially with addition of shapefiles.
Great outdoor tool. 4/5
One the whole, I really like this app. We ride SxS’s whenever we get a chance. The interactive map is a big help.
Only thing is that when searching for maps to download, sometimes you need to know the exact name of the map to find it in the store.
Do your research on particular maps before searching and you’ll be fine.
Cool app 4/5
Only complaint is that there aren’t enough proper maps out there to use with. I’ll keep working it though!
Love this App! 5/5
By Susanna Girolamo
Love using the downloadable topographic maps for my backcountry adventures. I use the extra settings to pin my way in and out and it has helped a lot finding my way out again. Great maps also usable on airplane mode and it doesn’t drain your battery.
Thanks so much for having these tools available!
Love It 5/5
By Balloon Piolt
I have the Albuquerque International Bollon Fiesta loaded on my iPad and Bluetooth my GPS receiver. Use it every time I fly to help me keep track of PZ's, restricted areas, and Balloon friendly areas.
For snowmobiling this is absolutely incredible app. I actually would’ve paid for it.
Place names 4/5
I wish the maps had more searchable place names.
Avenza is great 5/5
I am planning an extensive motorcycle ride on mostly trails and dirt roads and Avenza is working great! Like it so much after using it on my phone I bought an iPad specifically for Avenza to mount on my motorcycle
Forest Service MVUM maps 4/5
By Great Katoom
A little hard to find the specific USFS MVUM your looking for because government bureaucracies have zero creativity when it comes to map titles, but if your accustomed to using MVUM’s - then Avenza is the source for these free maps.
I used them for the first time last summer on a dirt bike trip to Idaho. The GPS tool worked on my IPhone 6 just fine and it was very accurate. I carry a GPS and Spot, as well. But, I always went to Avenza on my phone first.
1’ve only scratched the surface of available features, but I have a friend who laid out the Black Hills KTM rally using it and it was a great tool.
Ever since I upgraded to iPhone 7 from SE, app works a lot better
A Must Have 5/5
By Since 1992
I absolutely love this app. My family enjoys hiking, biking, and off highway motorcycle riding which is where this app excels. For all you single track and trail riding motorcycle enthusiasts find your map by searching for either “MVUM” (multi vehicle use map) and/or “OHV” (off highway vehicle). No worries about cell service as this app utilized the GPS in your phone.
I also love the ability to plot photos and mark my trails which makes it a joy to share later with friends.
A feature I would like to see added would be the ability to share my recorded “track” via a simple text. The track would then be imported into other applicable maps and more importantly with friends who also have the app and corresponding map(s) so that they could follow the same track at a later date.
I like it 4/5
Really good app. Much Better than a clunky gps unit. Very easy to use. Needs improved single finger zoom in/out, like google map has.
Outstanding App 5/5
We ride the trails in the Black Hills of South Dakota all year long. This app not only has the tails but shows your location while traveling. It also shows where you’ve been. Used it for other national areas like Havasu Az.
Frustrating App 3/5
By Otokoyama Denki
I’ve been using the app for approximately six months during a handful of off-road trips.
It’s adequate when you acquire a map which is originally done in PDF (such as from Tom Harrison, National Geographic, and some others). Many of the maps, however, are in fact sourced from compressed scans of printed maps (or low quality renderings) that are virtually unusable when zoomed in to ascertain area details. The store does not indicate which are native PDF and which are scans.
Many of the better available maps are available in hard copy for essentially the same price, though missing only the nice ability to use your device’s GPS to indicate and track your location. An issue of all mapping apps is that it’s sometimes nice to spread out a paper map to get the big picture as something is lost when you use an app such as this to zoom out making features so small that they’re unrecognizable and text unreadable.
Overall, if you needs maps, you’re much better off getting the much more capable Gaia app and suffering the subscription fee which you’ll quickly rack up in a handful of maps with this app versus unlimited maps in Gaia.
I think there’s a place for this app if you restrict yourself to Tom Harrison maps or are able to get lucky and find native PDF maps which are not available on Gaia, but all of the Nat Geo Trails illustrated and topographic maps are in Gaia ... and much easier to find and download.
About Time! 4/5
By Gunny guy 68
It’s about time something good was free. I wish The single page maps were a different color or I could narrow the type of map down even more. But it’s a great respect s when you find the map you need.
Love this app 5/5
This is a simple And powerful app that I use all time while hiking and riding my horse.
Love this app 5/5
By Biking Cori
So GREAT for hiking and mountain biking. Works even if I don’t have phone reception.
Avenza Maps 5/5
This is truly a Five Star app. I’m not used to doing these evaluations but felt compelled to do one here since I inadvertently gave this app a one star rating. I used the Temagami North map from Jeff’s Maps this summer on a canoe trip and it would have been very difficult to do without Avenza and Jeff’s Maps.
I love this app 5/5
I use this app when hiking Land Trust of North AL trails and it has never failed me. No bugs, no crashing, and it’s always 100% accurate with respect to location and trail routes.
Finding the correct map 4/5
It is very hard to find the correct map you want. You spend a lot of time searching.
Good App Overall 4/5
By Timmy D*
Need to make sharing georeferenced pdf maps easier. Cannot share them if the versions are different, even if you have the pro version. Otherwise it works great.
Would have gave this app five Stars, but 4/5
Solid app in every way but one, some of the pay for topo map are real junk . In most cases the free topo maps are as good or better! Get rid of the poor pay-for topographical maps & get five stars!
Great app 4/5
By Pay by the month
Excellent at referencing where you are at. There’s room for improvement and wish they had a comment box to help them become aware of glitches and areas of improvement.
Missing info 4/5
By Trail Hunter
Some pay maps are missing portion of the maps, (NG) no refunds, maps are third party, other than that works great but will work perfect with out missing info on the third party maps. Compering both maps from NO from avenza maps and paper map same price, full info on the paper map, missing info on avenza maps. Avenza became useless when came to that situation 😒 glad friend brought paper map😪
Excellent application 5/5
It is very convenient to be able to use Avenza to import existing maps like all of the USFS ranger district maps and various hunting zone maps. Simple to use and save changes. I use for general tracking and mostly to support my hunting, hiking, backpacking, mtn biking and general route finding needs. Maps are very reasonably priced and there are a huge variety of formats
I Use Avenza For Everything 5/5
Mainly for hunting but for back roading and locating places I was to go. I would not be without it.
Great for adventurers 5/5
We use this map all over on our travels. Love it.
By george says
Great app for navigation (depending on the map quality, of course). But the search feature is quite difficult to use.
Only thing missing 4/5
By NW Forester
If only Map annotations and other Waypoint symbols were possible too, Avenza would be perfect for all I need.
This app works 5/5
Use it for work and for play. I would recommend it to anyone who spends time in the woods.
Easting Northing (UTM) numbers are wrong 5/5
Must try 4/5
Works great. That’s all there is to say!
Outstanding Customer Service 5/5
I recently lost all my maps because of lost data. I didn’t back my maps up either. The only proof I had was receipts from iTunes. They found my maps for me & uploaded to my account.
As far as the maps goes, the image quality is spot on & very useful when hiking & using the GPS. The best map company to have in your phone.
Good app but free version is too limited 3/5
By Cumberland Plateau Hiker
I do not like to pay for apps and do not like the limited number of maps you can import. 3 is not enough
Love this App 5/5
Use this app all the time for work and hunting and all sorts of stuff.
Avenza app for maps as a professional guide 5/5
By Az Big Bulls
Avenza has created a user friendly map app that, we are convinced there’s no better app for maps. The use is so easy the map clarity is excellent and the accessibility to maps such as flatline maps are great.
Glamis area 5/5
Love the maps just hard because BLM says it's a no riding area and you get tickets
No map detail 1/5
By wooley bugger
Bought a $5 forest service map for hunting in Montana and there was not enough detail for it to be of any use. There might be good maps on this app but why would I dish out more money with no quality assurance??
Import maps 2/5
I'm not happy that I have to pay a yearly fee to import maps
It works 5/5
By Guy D.
Follow the blue dot right across the contour map. Easy as pie.
Pretty good for hiking 5/5
By Robert the Red
I find the “Enhanced” USGS topo maps at 99¢ each to be a good deal. Clearer than the scanned maps and locating myself on GPS is handy. Main drawback is finding the maps I want — it’s tricksy sometimes.
Love this app! 5/5
By Anonymous ---6633
I use this app all of the time! I even downloaded maps before we went to Greece and it worked great!
Must have app! 5/5
Saved me when my ATV broke down on a trail in the middle of nowhere. Would have literally been lost without it. Real time. Reliable.Thank goodness I had cell service.
Usgs topos for free! 5/5
Better than a $400 Garmin pos.
Trying to figure out 4/5
I thought I bought all the maps in is that but only one of them is showing up but it really could be operator error to be honest hopefully I can figure it out
