ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Magazine app reviews

  • New update is unusable 1/5

    By September Kaufman
I haven't been able to get through an issue with the new update.
  • Worst app ever 1/5

    By Blue4365
Ever since “updating” the app I have had nothing but problems - I am unable to log in (just keeps returning me to subscription page or does nothing), so I have to reinstall the app. It is no longer user friendly. It crashes all the time. And judging by the plethora of bad reviews, I’m not the only one experiencing these problems. I’ve been a long time subscriber and enjoyed being able to read EW on my iPad when I travel. But no longer am able to. So EW are you ever going to fix the problems or just continue ignoring your customers?
  • Disastrous new version 1/5

    By DrJolo
Incredibly slow and unstable. App launch takes 10 to 15 seconds, keep prompting to subscribe when I’ve already entered my information. Navigation is confusing and redundant, what was once direct now requires multiple clicks to get where you’re going. New font for standard view is completely illegible. Their solution is the new reader view, where images are incredibly slow to load, sometimes 10+ seconds per page. Even after waiting for photos to load and render at the higher resolution, image quality is atrocious, like something from a webcam. Worst of all, app crashes repeatedly after almost every article, easily the most unstable iOS app that I’ve used in years. This is so bad that unless it is fixed soon, I will have to switch back to print edition as it is completely unusable. What you gain are a bunch of annoying links to EW website news stories, which is not what we want. If I wanted to browse the website, I would use a web browser to do that!
  • Horrible new app update 1/5

    By EWreader
The new EW app for iPad is awful! Always crashes. Never lets me download new issues even when I am signed in. So slow to scroll..when it does scroll. 99% of the time it just freezes up and becomes totally useless and I end up force closing it. This time was the last time. I deleted it entirely. Never again. EW, why?! Bring back the old app! It worked great!
  • What the What???? 1/5

    By Fuzz
Like most other people have put, this new update is terrible. If you leave the app halfway through the issue and come back, it doesn't save your spot. So you have to find where you were at again. Plus, downloading a new issue is considerably more difficult. The whole swipe down for reader view for a magazine? Come on! Don't even mention the crashes, have to load the app four or five times and then find the issue and spot I was reading. Not planning on renewing now. Bring back the old app!
  • Missing Issues 1/5

    By hunterjumperguy
Agree with the other negative feedback, which apparently is falling on deaf ears. Random issues are somehow locked and I am expected to pay for issues that are a part of my subscription?! Plus, all issues prior to The end of January, 2015 are missing...won’t scroll past that point so I guess those are just lost forever now? Customer support is terrible, no reply to my email which raised these issues with them.
  • Horrible let down!!! 1/5

    By Nespakashuty
Dear developers, if you read reviews at all, please consider changing your app because at this point having a subscription to a magazine that is not readable is a flat out insult for your subscibers! I like the magazine but the pdf with its low res pictures looks ugly on the ipad, the text view has ginormous letters that are just as ugly as the rest of the experience! I’m constantly kicked out of where I was, have to restore my purchase for every new issue, etc, I cant mention a single good thing about your app. And there is the iphone version: pdf is useless, two page view only when turned horizontally, and in text view the reading area occupies less than half of my iphone x screen! Ridiculous, I’m thinking about asking for a refound and just move on to a different magazine! What a shame waiting so long for the new app!!!
  • Ruined the app 1/5

The magazine isn't as good as it used to be, but the app is an abomination. In order to download new issues, I have to log out and log in again, every time. Every new page gives you an annoying floating message to swipe up for text only. You're driving people away with this awful app. Please fix it.
  • Hate the new app 1/5

    By lovettapps
The new Entertainment Weekly app is the worst. It’s not user-friendly at all. There have been many times where I’ve been reading an article and the app just crashes. Also on the old app when I finished reading a particular article I can close off the app and when I come back to the app later the magazine would be immediately opened to the last article I read. Not with the new app. When I go back to continue reading the magazine the app opens on the cover and I have to scroll through the entire magazine till I find the article that I was up to. Annoying! Please go back to the old way the app was. It was fantastic and very user-friendly. Also...current issues always were available on Thursday at midnight EST but not anymore.
  • How does this happen? 1/5

    By Disappointed in EW
How do you take an app that used to do so much and make it do so much less in twice the time to run? With each update this magazine gets worse and worse. The app takes forever to open, then to open the issue you want, and to get to the articles. Once you open a page it takes a while to come into focus, and even longer for any pictures. If you try to enlarge the pictures they are blurry and out of focus. This will probably be my last year as a subscriber. What a mess!!
  • UNUSABLE 1/5

    By Macmama2000
I have been using the Entertainment Weekly digital app for years and it has always worked beautifully. Until recently, that is. The newest update is so bad, that it is practically worthless. They’ve added several steps which make it difficult to actually get to the issue, and have taken away the feature that allows you to go back to the issue you were reading. It no longer remembers where you were. So if you, like me, read and then have to put it down for a couple of days, you will have to read through the entire magazine all over again just to find your place. Also for some unknown reason, the app crashes when I get to certain pages. Why is this happening? I am frustrated to the point where I’d like to go back to receiving paper issues, as bad as that sounds. It is that bad. Please fix this!
  • You really screwed up this app! 1/5

    By RickJava
This latest update from a couple of weeks ago has been extremely frustrating. I see you were trying to reinstate the flexibility to read in landscape view, which used to work, awhile ago. Currently I have constant crashes, cannot get through reading an entire issue, and sometimes, cannot open the issue at all. I’m a longtime subscriber, but have gotten used to reading online. I will be canceling soon, if this doesn’t get fixed quickly.
  • Terrible Update 1/5

    By hokie87
Thanks for the ability to use landscape orientation, but everything else about the IPad app is a wreck. Can't access my back issues (not even read yet) or the latest one. Download speed extremely slow, photos don't download clearly. I am a long time subscriber who came to rely on digital version, but this will be my last subscription. And one more thing - the number of useless double issues has gotten ridiculous. Why do we pay extra for your week off from publishing? Hope this can be fixed soon.
  • Uhmmmm? 1/5

    By Furcoatlady
Seriously? You want to tell me “swipe up for reader version” ON EVERY SINGLE PAGE? I got it the first time. Talk about sucking the joy out of reading. Please allow us to disable it.
  • EW and People Have Gone Downhill 1/5

    By Lovetoreview777
What the heck happened to Entertainment Weekly and People magazine? The latest updates made both these apps worthless. I cancelled my People subscription and will cancel EW soon. The images, if they load, are blurry. I can’t leave the app and come back to the same page. I have to scroll through the entire magazine to get to where I left off! There used to be digital only content. Not anymore. Horrible app. Both People and EW need to fix these issues ASAP before they lose more customers.
  • Developer please read! 1/5

    By Jimcmonta
Notice all the negative reviews since app upgrade?! Obviously someone dropped the ball! This has made a once great app a disaster! Please bring back old app! I agree with all the negative reviews as a long time subscriber. Whoever de eloped his mess should be fired on the spot as well a third boss!
  • Latest update is TERRIBLE. 1/5

    By KeBoBucks
Whoever EW put in charge of the app design and user experience on the latest release of this app has no idea what they’re doing. The navigation makes no sense anymore, it’s not even clear how to download new issues. I find myself just clicking around and changing views until a download button appears. You can’t even go to the next page in an issue without an alert an the top telling you to swipe down for reader view. On every. Single. Page. EW had an enjoyable app before this release that made me look forward to Saturday mornings reading EW on my iPad with a cup of coffee. Way to screw it up! My subscription runs out in 6 months and I’m getting weekly emails to renew. If this app is indicative of what EW thinks its readers deserve and they don’t put out an update that makes it significantly better soon, I’ll probably let my subscription lapse after many years.
  • Terrible 1/5

    By BikeGirl787
What happened? This new "upgrade" is the worst experience I have ever had with an app. The old app worked fine. This new one is a terrible experience. I just tried to open it 4 times. Each time it crashed. I can't imagine how much effort it must have taken to make it this bad. I would give it zero stars if I could.
  • Garbage! 1/5

    By Polar Nod
I think this might be the worst "update" to an app that I've ever seen. Avoid downloading this latest version until you are completely done with the older issues in your library just to stave off the impending vitriol a bit longer.
  • I thought the new app was supposed to be better 1/5

    By Jamrich2
This new app is TERRIBLE. my print issues are arriving before the digital one shows available. It used to be every Friday like clockwork. Now I never know when the digital issue will be available. Big step backward.
  • Hate the latest version 1/5

    By Gozzinta
So I’ve been using the digital version since it became available years ago. It was a great representation of what a digital magazine should be. This update has made the user experience horrible. It doesn’t remember the last page I was on, photos are blurry if I enlarge them, it appears that I have to buy an issue even though I have a subscription, etc. This version is more of a downgrade rather than an upgrade. Boo Hiss to the app developers and their ideas of what better means. Bring back the old interface!
  • Thanks for nothing 1/5

    By Lokemper
I just wanted to thank you for this latest upgrade, which has made reading EW unnecessarily burdensome. Well done! In fact, I hate what this app has become I needed to come back and add to this review. I admit that years ago I did not like the e-version of EW, but I grew to really enjoy it. I enjoyed the interaction with the page the app provided. That is all gone now and all the app provides is a knock-off pdf version of the magazine. I so enjoyed the previous electronic version of EW that honestly kept renewing my subscription so I could read THAT version. The paper version just goes to waste. Unless something happens and we get the more fun, more enjoyable app version back, when renewal time comes around I’m out. There is nothing inherent to EW that I can’t get on the internet for free and more timely.
  • What happened? 1/5

    By morgan1976
The new update to the app completely ruined the whole experience. Out of the several digital magazines I’ve subscribed to EW was, hands-down, the best (no crashing, rare re-log-in’s, continue where leaving off, once downloaded the quality was consistent). Not anymore! This constantly crashes; after an issue is downloaded, the pictures look as if they are still partially loading; if you close an issue, you must find where you left off; what was once a streamlined interface is now cluttered like a webpage. After two issues, I cancelled my subscription (I’ll keep getting issues for a few more months). Was this even beta tested?
  • I would give it zero stars but it wouldn’t let me 1/5

    By MadHatter1901
Love the magazine~I’m a subscriber since 1996~ hate the new app update! It’s not user friendly at all. It worked great in the previous version. If it’s not broke, don’t try to fix it. Please change it back.
  • Why mess with a good thing? 1/5

    By DesertCyclist
The latest version of the app is a travesty. The previous version was darned near perfect. Not sure what EW was thinking...
  • Bad update 1/5

    By Texas Gamer
My library won’t update to let me download new issues!
  • The new update is total sh*t!!!!! 1/5

    By twh19810209
I was forced to update because the old app couldn't download new issues any more. And the new version is total sh*t!!! Crashes all the time and pix are intolerably blurry!
  • Worst Update 1/5

    By Ron Borgstedt
New app does not see any new magazines that come out, and you can not get your past purchases. The app is harder to use.
  • Good mag, horribly frustrating app 1/5

    By Bryant57
Updated the app just recently and have had nothing but trouble. It will not download the current issue. I even tried signing out then signing in again but nothing. Why didn’t the developers leave the app as it was instead of giving us a “new and improved” version. Wouldn’t it be nice if it actually was new and improved? Looks like it’s back to reading the printed magazine. Ridiculous.
  • Doesn't work at all since the update 1/5

    By SBrentnall
Latest update is terrible! Issues take forever to download and every time you flip the page, there’s an incredibly annoying “Swipe up for reader view” banner at the top. I don’t need to see that on EVERY SINGLE PAGE!
  • Latest version is full of bugs 1/5

    By Rickmacg
The latest version keeps crashing and does not remember the page last visited, in fact if you have multiple issues it does not even remember the last issue visited. Hoping to see these issues resolved with a bug release soon as I cannot even get through an article without it crashing.
  • Unable to log in 1/5

    By BigDaddy1170
I have a subscription to EW in addition to digital. I have not been able to log into my account to read the latest digital issue. I would love to be able to get the full benefits with my subscription and not have to wait until the new issue comes in the mail.
  • Crashes a lot. Not optimized for iPhone X 1/5

    By Pennywise.
Long time subscriber to EW. The app however, is incredibly glitchy. As a subscriber, I hate the home screen. Seeing the price on the issue makes me feel like I’ve somehow lost my subscription. It’s only until I click the little catalog button that I am able to view and download magazines. Also the app crashes a lot. Like, not infrequently. I’m talking every few swipes. It’s also not been updated for the iPhone X and I think the design is faulty. It could use some tweaking to take advantage of the large screens we have now. Have to zoom in and out on pages is frustrating. There should be a way to format the digital copy so that it just reads better. I know reading it on the iPhone isn’t the most ideal, but it’s the most convenient. Hope it improves.
  • Need help! 1/5

    By chrisnsk
Change it back!! New app is the stupidest.
  • What where you thinking, a magazine app without bookmarks?? 2/5

    By regniteihcS
Still one of the greatest magazines around, but stop letting the app producers mess with the reading experience! It's magazine, not a social media platform. Bring back bookmarks and the possibility to delete issues offline!!
  • New app is an unreadable throwback 1/5

    By Reneinmaine
I loved this app because it did right what many others did wrong. And now the new update had gone and emulated the worst things about other magazine apps. The format is now exactly the same as the industry mag I read for work and that had been unbearably tedious to read for about ten years.
  • Not improved 1/5

    By Tsmdreams
I used to love this app and used it to download the magazine each week. Now I cannot get the new issues to even appear in the app. I wish I could get it to work again.....
  • Latest update terrible 1/5

    By sippinjava
Eliminates all the media rich facets of the old app. Also, issues continue to show up a day or more behind print. Just got 12/1/17 issue in mail and still cannot DL.
  • Latest version 1/5

    By Jgh57
Doesn’t seem to have the latest issue. Last issue I have is November 17. Just got the print version of December 1. App still shows last issue as latest. 🤨
  • Not A Good Update 1/5

    By Lbug80
I was updated to a new app interface in November 2017. I would rate the original app I have had for years 4 or 5 stars. This update gets 1 star. Poor navigation. New issues show up late. I wish EW would revert to their old application.
  • Horrible quality 1/5

    By TotalConfusion
This used to be my favorite app and then they did the update and now when I look at some of the pages I noticed that the images are all lo-res JPEG‘s they’re not crisp like they used to be I might be going back to the actual magazine very very bad choice fix it please!
  • New update is buggy as hell 1/5

    By Snapsy23
I agree with @cinebuff, new version of the app doesn’t work properly (it crashes constantly and it’s very slow (even on iPad Air 2)! You have to pay for already paid issues and previous magazines, before 2013, are missing. I’m considering to cancel my subscription.... I’m very disappointed!!!!
  • New version not user friendly 1/5

    By tee206
I’ve been a subscriber for many years. Have loved the app version until the latest redo. Won’t load. When it does, it won’t recognize I’m a subscriber. Have reloaded/changed my password/etc multiple times. Still nothing. And since I opted to change my account to online only (save a tree!), this means I don’t have access to the magazine at all. Very frustrating.
  • New App is Terrible 1/5

    By Katelyn cutie
I'm a long time subscriber. The old app worked perfectly fine. The new app takes forever to download, IF you're actually able to access the latest issue. It's Monday, and I still can't download the latest issue of the magazine...with the old app, I could look forward to the latest issue first thing every Friday morning. If I wanted to read EW.com articles, I would go to the website...I don't need them with my magazine.
  • What did you do? 1/5

    By flarty
The new app update is an unmitigated disaster. For years this has been working seamlessly and was the Standard for a magazine to iPad port. Suddenly it is slow, buggy and unintuitive. Shockingly bad update, and unusable on my older iPad. Subscription will be canceled.
  • App no longer works 1/5

    By Grindmonkey
Completely non-functional for me now since the last update. Reverts back to the "news" page each time I exit the app even for a minute, does not remember the last page I was on, and each page takes upwards of 10 seconds to load. I just want to read the magazine, how hard can that be?
  • Update is a mess! 1/5

    By Triggerpsp
Totally frustrating-- current issue has never been so hard to access. Close to cancelling if this continues
  • Ruined a good thing 1/5

    By mayb2
Latest version of the app is horrible. It’s been fine for years and they changed it to the current garbage. I will be cancelling my subscription as I only use the app and it is unusable. Ucccccch!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • App crashes all the time 1/5

    By mwyner
New version of app is awful. Crashes all the time. In fact while trying to read 1 article, it crashed 5 times and I had to reopen it, start over...read a little more...more crashing. Bring back the old stable version!
  • Doesn't work! 20 year subscriber. 1/5

    By The Whole Truth
Since the new app I can't download any issue without paying for it. I already automatically paid my subscription for the year! I have three issue that I can't read but I paid for them with my subscription. I have sent help desk three emails with no response and called phone number, they told me to delete and download app again, that did not work. Someone help me, you have my money already for the year.
