ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Magazine app reviews

  • What were they thinking? 1/5

    By KC94558
A couple of years ago this on line magazine was so user friendly, had links to music samples, movie clips, as well as most pages being alive by means of scrolling only a small part of the page, while you still had full view of the photos. Then last year they started cutting back on features. Now these last months of the new improved EW is garbage. Whose idea was it to make these changes. It's no longer fun to view this anymore. You need to fix this mess. Stop these crashes, remember where we left off, stop taking away the features. Bring it back to the quality and fun you made it 3 years ago!
  • Completely useless, Couldn't give it a zero 1/5

    By Poppa From Md
This app worked perfectly before the last update, now doesn't let me download any of the new issues, can't associate my account with my email, and requests to the developers for help went unanswered. Enough to make me just cancel my subscription.
  • Bad changes 1/5

    By Fairmont1955
Not sure what happened, but the app changes aren’t good. I have to log out every time there’s a new issue, otherwise it wants me to purchase the issue, plus the new issues don’t show until a day or two after release (?). I don’t quite get where they are going with things, but the app updates don’t seem to create a better user experience.
  • Worst updated app ever 1/5

    By Musclecar6
Latest update with one week old version I can no longer get magazines to download. Continues tells me to subscribe but I have been for two years. Go back to the old app. This is the least customer focused app update ever experienced. If not fixed soon, and I do not need to enumerate the problems everyone else has, I will go back to print. Listen to your customers!
  • Unable to download new issues 1/5

    By Jekhyde
It won’t let me download and read the latest issue even though I’m signed in as a subscriber.
  • Horrible app 1/5

    By Holly Mc B
The app has you relog in, asks you to purchase, download, swipe up for reader mode, is fidgety, flakey, infuriating, and by the time I get the app to work, the mail carrier can pretty much deliver a paper copy through a foot of snow to my door. So, it’s a waste of time, makes me crazy, and makes me consider dropping my subscription and forsaking entertainment and moving to a cabin in the woods. With or without zombie redneck torture family.
  • Was better at one time. 2/5

    By garokaz
Small things like a drop down hint window about “reader version” which happens on every page you view. Got it the first time it happened. Great way to view the magazine but getting there could be smoother.
  • EW EWWWWW 1/5

    By Rudyspa
Utterly disappointed in the new app. Have been a subscriber on print and digital for 10+ years. I am constantly confused as to why the ‘new’ app was even created - none of the enhancements are anything I would have asked for...and the execution is less than satisfactory. Many of the photos that must cost the magazine a fortune to shoot render slowly and are blurry when they finally come up. The ‘extras’ are miserable to navigate, take away from the magazine - both in web view-ability and interest in the topics. Please toss this version and start over or go back to prior set up...
  • Drove me to cancel 1/5

    By Annoyed Email User
What a wonderful app this used to be but the new version doesn't make the investment worth it. Googling content on safari is more enjoyable than this slow to load, incredibly difficult to read, and poor layout experience. What a shame. You had one of the best digital magazine apps around and I subscribed for years. Sometimes new isn't always better.
  • Horrible, Horrible, Horrible App 1/5

    By cardinalsnut
How How How can a major magazine allow such a horrible digital production. The resolution is TERRIBLE. Whole thing is blurry, not crisp like everything else on IPad. The annoying “swipe up for reader view” comes on the screen EVERYTIME you swipe a page. The original app was fantastic and so easy to use and great to look at. Such a waste in this age to produce a worthless app.
  • From best to worst 1/5

    By CLTmom
No longer works. Please fix it! Every time I go to a different app, it signs me out and forgets everything I’ve downloaded. And I have to start all over. Again and again. And again. IT STINKS, PLEASE FIX IT!!!!!
  • Skip it 1/5

    By lchboc
The app version of this publication used to have me looking forward to its weekly release. Interactive, fun, timely. This new version is nothing more than a PDF scanned version of the hard copy. Hard to read. Terrible. Soulless. Freezes, doesn’t recognize my subscription most weeks and the ‘live’ feed is nothing short of annoying. Fix it if you want to keep this long time Customer.
  • Update the app already! 1/5

    By Hyphendash
The latest version of the app is slow and the resolution on some of the pages are low quality. Really disappointing.
  • On newsstands before available for download 1/5

    By Taynikki
Why am I a digital subscriber when I can purchase the magazine on the newsstand before it's available for download? The new app is beyond frustrating. Whenever a new issue is finally available, subscribers are prompted to purchase the issue. The only way around this is to log out of the app and then log back in to download the issue. If this, and lag time issues are not fixed soon, I am done with this magazine.
  • Terrible in every way 1/5

    By justrick1701
Have been an EW subscriber since the beginning. This app is a disaster; slow and poorly designed. Meanwhile, non-stop double issues have made this more like Entertainment Bi-Weekly. So disappointing.
  • Crap App 1/5

    By Vms123345
I can’t believe how awful this new update is..ALL of my previously downloaded issues were removed!! That is completely unacceptable for an update that is supposed fo be an improvement! What once was a great app and a joy to read has become a joke. App is glitchy and unstable and frankly is quite disappointing. I doubt I will renew my subscription. Way to go EW!! Maybe I’ll try People.
  • worthless! 1/5

    By Tj715
The latest “update” rendered the app completely useless! I have yet to be able to actually read one page before the app crashes. Most of the time, the page isn’t even loaded before the app closes. And this is for downloaded content. Like others have said, this is a huge disappointment! They took a stable, functioning app and broke it. Someone at their office wants only the print edition read. I keep hoping they’re going to sent out a patch, but it’s been 2 months now and I’m pretty sure no patch is coming.
  • Crap 1/5

    By Lunatude
This app is awful. It's like a wall. I can't download issues. I have to sign in each time I use it and then it won't let me download issues anyway. Basically, EW has ended my subscription. If you want to use the app for your subscription, don't bother. It's useless and worthless. I wish I could give it NO stars, because if an app doesn't do anything why should it get even one?
  • Horrible App 1/5

    By Acheung1983
Keeps making me sign in over and over and I cannot download latest magazine even though I am a subscriber. Fix this please! Old interface was 100 times better than this...
  • Swipe up for reader view! 1/5

Seriously needs a usability pass. Wish I could swipe left on this latest update.
  • What Happened? 1/5

    By dclewis55
What happened to all the issues I had previously downloaded? I greatly prefer the old app with mobile-formatted pages. The new one is like a PDF reader. Even worse, the app no longer remembers where the reading location the last time the app was used. It doesn't even remember which issue is being read. It always opens to the cover of the most recent issue. Articles from the web site could have been a useful addition to the wonderful old app, rather than the excuse to abandon all the good features.
  • Makes you log in every time 1/5

    By BostonObserver
Unlike every other digital magazine, it does not remember your username and password and makes you log in every time. Worse, much of the time even this does not work and you have to reset your password again and again. Terrible.
  • Doesn’t let me download 1/5

    By Mommyjjm
Says I’m not subscribed but I am. Everything is updated on my phone. Pls fix on your end EW!!
  • New “updated look” is GARBAGE 1/5

    By Dmaul53854 (Chase Dunnette)
The quality of the pictures and words is suboptimal. It literally looked like how the app looked before being optimized for Retina Displays. That was five years ago I believe. There’s no excuse for this.
  • Latest update not so good 1/5

    By ruedeturenne
I still get the print edition, and sometimes the digital magazine won’t update for 2 to 3 days. Why are we the last to get the magazine? The reader view helps, but what’s the point of that tiny type anyway. Notifications don’t work as well. Please try again!
  • Worst "update" ever 1/5

    By TheHask
They took a great, functional version of their app and replaced it with this piece of garbage. When the app does actually open, which is rare, it constantly crashes, won't download old issues that I have paid for over the past three years as a subscriber, gets 95% of the way to downloading the current issue and then conks out. Terrible, just terrible. Finally gave up and canceled my subscription auto renewal, but can't get a refund for the year I just paid for a few months ago. So disappointing!! Please bring back the old version of the app and send this one to the trash!!!
  • Horrible update 1/5

    By Rnw85
I came on here to make sure I wasn't the only one really disappointed with this update. And I feel like I need to add to the chorus- this new update is so slow it's unreadable. It doesn't hold my place, photos take forever to load. Back to print issues for me.
  • Latest update is difficult to use and useless with only one issue downloadable. 1/5

    By Justhatched
Difficult user interface. Can only download one issue at a time. (have the developers never read on a plane?). I have subscribed to EW since the beginning. I only read digital issues. I am hugely disappointed and looking at other magazines as options.
  • Missing Issues and More Problems 1/5

    By Neil PharmD
To get the latest issue, one has to sign out then sign back in for it to download. I am not able to download all my issues. Please remove the ‘Swipe Up for Reader View’ for nearly every single page turn as it very annoying. Just give us the best reading experience we deserve to fully enjoy your content.
  • Unusable since the last update 1/5

    By Marie66653
Was one of my favorite apps for years. With the update it is now practically impossible to use. Constantly prompts you to sign in with an EW account, even though your subscription is through iTunes. Downloaded issues disappear, or the app won’t let you get to your Issues page at all as the waiting wheel of death just spins and spins (in spite of a solid internet connection .) Fonts are horrible and picture quality is low-res now, it loses your place, the Issues page won’t open as it tries to get me to subscribe even though I’m already subscribed. If this doesn’t get fixed ASAP I’m going to cancel my subscription and just read Empire.
  • Terrible 1/5

    By Alan F.
My issues no longer load....making the app and subscription worthless.
  • New update is horrible 1/5

    By Jmorg50
The new update has managed to make a fun, iPad reading experience into a clunky, hard to navigate slog. Whoever thought this was a good idea should be fired.
  • Bring back the old version!! 1/5

    By EW reader
New version of app does not remember where I left off and does not go to my issue when I open the app. Disastrous! Old version was more user friendly - this version has too much.
  • New update is unusable 1/5

    By September Kaufman
I haven't been able to get through an issue with the new update.
  • Worst app ever 1/5

    By Blue4365
Ever since “updating” the app I have had nothing but problems - I am unable to log in (just keeps returning me to subscription page or does nothing), so I have to reinstall the app. It is no longer user friendly. It crashes all the time. And judging by the plethora of bad reviews, I’m not the only one experiencing these problems. I’ve been a long time subscriber and enjoyed being able to read EW on my iPad when I travel. But no longer am able to. So EW are you ever going to fix the problems or just continue ignoring your customers?
  • Disastrous new version 1/5

    By DrJolo
Incredibly slow and unstable. App launch takes 10 to 15 seconds, keep prompting to subscribe when I’ve already entered my information. Navigation is confusing and redundant, what was once direct now requires multiple clicks to get where you’re going. New font for standard view is completely illegible. Their solution is the new reader view, where images are incredibly slow to load, sometimes 10+ seconds per page. Even after waiting for photos to load and render at the higher resolution, image quality is atrocious, like something from a webcam. Worst of all, app crashes repeatedly after almost every article, easily the most unstable iOS app that I’ve used in years. This is so bad that unless it is fixed soon, I will have to switch back to print edition as it is completely unusable. What you gain are a bunch of annoying links to EW website news stories, which is not what we want. If I wanted to browse the website, I would use a web browser to do that!
  • Horrible new app update 1/5

    By EWreader
The new EW app for iPad is awful! Always crashes. Never lets me download new issues even when I am signed in. So slow to scroll..when it does scroll. 99% of the time it just freezes up and becomes totally useless and I end up force closing it. This time was the last time. I deleted it entirely. Never again. EW, why?! Bring back the old app! It worked great!
  • What the What???? 1/5

    By Fuzz
Like most other people have put, this new update is terrible. If you leave the app halfway through the issue and come back, it doesn't save your spot. So you have to find where you were at again. Plus, downloading a new issue is considerably more difficult. The whole swipe down for reader view for a magazine? Come on! Don't even mention the crashes, have to load the app four or five times and then find the issue and spot I was reading. Not planning on renewing now. Bring back the old app!
  • Missing Issues 1/5

    By hunterjumperguy
Agree with the other negative feedback, which apparently is falling on deaf ears. Random issues are somehow locked and I am expected to pay for issues that are a part of my subscription?! Plus, all issues prior to The end of January, 2015 are missing...won’t scroll past that point so I guess those are just lost forever now? Customer support is terrible, no reply to my email which raised these issues with them.
  • Horrible let down!!! 1/5

    By Nespakashuty
Dear developers, if you read reviews at all, please consider changing your app because at this point having a subscription to a magazine that is not readable is a flat out insult for your subscibers! I like the magazine but the pdf with its low res pictures looks ugly on the ipad, the text view has ginormous letters that are just as ugly as the rest of the experience! I’m constantly kicked out of where I was, have to restore my purchase for every new issue, etc, I cant mention a single good thing about your app. And there is the iphone version: pdf is useless, two page view only when turned horizontally, and in text view the reading area occupies less than half of my iphone x screen! Ridiculous, I’m thinking about asking for a refound and just move on to a different magazine! What a shame waiting so long for the new app!!!
  • Ruined the app 1/5

The magazine isn't as good as it used to be, but the app is an abomination. In order to download new issues, I have to log out and log in again, every time. Every new page gives you an annoying floating message to swipe up for text only. You're driving people away with this awful app. Please fix it.
  • Hate the new app 1/5

    By lovettapps
The new Entertainment Weekly app is the worst. It’s not user-friendly at all. There have been many times where I’ve been reading an article and the app just crashes. Also on the old app when I finished reading a particular article I can close off the app and when I come back to the app later the magazine would be immediately opened to the last article I read. Not with the new app. When I go back to continue reading the magazine the app opens on the cover and I have to scroll through the entire magazine till I find the article that I was up to. Annoying! Please go back to the old way the app was. It was fantastic and very user-friendly. Also...current issues always were available on Thursday at midnight EST but not anymore.
  • How does this happen? 1/5

    By Disappointed in EW
How do you take an app that used to do so much and make it do so much less in twice the time to run? With each update this magazine gets worse and worse. The app takes forever to open, then to open the issue you want, and to get to the articles. Once you open a page it takes a while to come into focus, and even longer for any pictures. If you try to enlarge the pictures they are blurry and out of focus. This will probably be my last year as a subscriber. What a mess!!
  • UNUSABLE 1/5

    By Macmama2000
I have been using the Entertainment Weekly digital app for years and it has always worked beautifully. Until recently, that is. The newest update is so bad, that it is practically worthless. They’ve added several steps which make it difficult to actually get to the issue, and have taken away the feature that allows you to go back to the issue you were reading. It no longer remembers where you were. So if you, like me, read and then have to put it down for a couple of days, you will have to read through the entire magazine all over again just to find your place. Also for some unknown reason, the app crashes when I get to certain pages. Why is this happening? I am frustrated to the point where I’d like to go back to receiving paper issues, as bad as that sounds. It is that bad. Please fix this!
  • You really screwed up this app! 1/5

    By RickJava
This latest update from a couple of weeks ago has been extremely frustrating. I see you were trying to reinstate the flexibility to read in landscape view, which used to work, awhile ago. Currently I have constant crashes, cannot get through reading an entire issue, and sometimes, cannot open the issue at all. I’m a longtime subscriber, but have gotten used to reading online. I will be canceling soon, if this doesn’t get fixed quickly.
  • Terrible Update 1/5

    By hokie87
Thanks for the ability to use landscape orientation, but everything else about the IPad app is a wreck. Can't access my back issues (not even read yet) or the latest one. Download speed extremely slow, photos don't download clearly. I am a long time subscriber who came to rely on digital version, but this will be my last subscription. And one more thing - the number of useless double issues has gotten ridiculous. Why do we pay extra for your week off from publishing? Hope this can be fixed soon.
  • Uhmmmm? 1/5

    By Furcoatlady
Seriously? You want to tell me “swipe up for reader version” ON EVERY SINGLE PAGE? I got it the first time. Talk about sucking the joy out of reading. Please allow us to disable it.
  • EW and People Have Gone Downhill 1/5

    By Lovetoreview777
What the heck happened to Entertainment Weekly and People magazine? The latest updates made both these apps worthless. I cancelled my People subscription and will cancel EW soon. The images, if they load, are blurry. I can’t leave the app and come back to the same page. I have to scroll through the entire magazine to get to where I left off! There used to be digital only content. Not anymore. Horrible app. Both People and EW need to fix these issues ASAP before they lose more customers.
  • Developer please read! 1/5

    By Jimcmonta
Notice all the negative reviews since app upgrade?! Obviously someone dropped the ball! This has made a once great app a disaster! Please bring back old app! I agree with all the negative reviews as a long time subscriber. Whoever de eloped his mess should be fired on the spot as well a third boss!
  • Latest update is TERRIBLE. 1/5

    By KeBoBucks
Whoever EW put in charge of the app design and user experience on the latest release of this app has no idea what they’re doing. The navigation makes no sense anymore, it’s not even clear how to download new issues. I find myself just clicking around and changing views until a download button appears. You can’t even go to the next page in an issue without an alert an the top telling you to swipe down for reader view. On every. Single. Page. EW had an enjoyable app before this release that made me look forward to Saturday mornings reading EW on my iPad with a cup of coffee. Way to screw it up! My subscription runs out in 6 months and I’m getting weekly emails to renew. If this app is indicative of what EW thinks its readers deserve and they don’t put out an update that makes it significantly better soon, I’ll probably let my subscription lapse after many years.
