Used to be free now they demand $$ 1/5
This used to be a great app I used on all my devices. Then Evernote decided to squeeze it's users for more money, limiting it to two devices unless a monthly subscription fee is paid. That's a crappy way to treat people who have come to depend on your app over the years. Charging more for major update is fine - charging more for new features or premium functionality as you already did, is fine. But charging us for the exact same thing that used to be free... Bad move.
Version 8.x.x - Broken 1/5
iPhone 6 and iOS 10.2. App crashes every time it's launched.
Version 8.2.1 still has major performance issues.
Recent update's kinks getting worked out 4/5
Upgraded my rating from 1 star to 4 stars. Kinks of recent update seem to be worked out, and I'm enjoying the benefits of Evernote again. I'm less confident in their development going forward, but right now it's a quality service and app.
Premium User: becoming unusable 2/5
I'll be brief.
The skinny: As soon as Google implements full attachment search and OCR, Evernote -- as currently implemented -- will die.
The silver lining: the base, history, and promise of Evernote is enough to make me keep trying, hoping the developers will make changes.
Suggestion: 1. Make the save to Evernote extension work. This is the main feature: we want to save stuff to EN. Make it fast! Run it in the background and only tell me if it fails. 2. just make an app with fast search that isn't bloated. THAT'S IT!!
Previous versions were great. This one is frustrating. 1/5
So, I can't hold on much longer. It's been five months since the disastrous 8.0 reboot, and many emails back and forth with (a very resonsive) customer service. And I am so, so, so frustrated. Just on Sunday, a note I created on iOS melded with another note I'd recently edited. Again. And another note just disappeared. Oh crap! No! Oh, there it is, just fine on desktop version, missing mysteriously from iOS. Then it was fine the next day. What??? I've had tables squish columns so that only 3 characters display horizontally, checkboxes just disappear and then reappear, and the whole note replaced with one long string of characters including all the metadata just jammed into the body of the note. The app freaks out and disrupts my flow when I'm writing something when the phone loses connectivity, which happens often as I'm going in and out of low or no service areas in New York buildings and the subway. And it's after a month, the app still can't download all the notes for offline use, which is critical because I often need to access to my database on my phone when it has no service. That's one of the primary reasons I pay for the premium service
The most important thing of all, though, is data integrity on the go. If I can't rely on Evernote to actually BE Evernote, then all the features and polish are worthless. What's is the game plan? I have absolutely "had it." I just re-installed the app, hoping that would fix it, and the app crashed on initial launch!
I've been using Evernote for 7 years. I rely on it to do my job. However, I've been looking into alternatives quite a bit. The thought of migrating a few thousand notes over to a new system and devising something to replace my tagging taxonomy is daunting, but only slightly more daunting that continuing to use Evernote the way it is.
I use Evernote for everything. I'm a premium user. It's my constant companion. And I feel like someone fed my companion lead pills. It's gone from snappy and reliable to slow and forgetful. It constantly asked me for my iTunes password. I have to tap tap tap to get it to respond to a command when I first open it, then it finally responds and I end up tapping a different function because the button changes under my thumb. It's losing data now, too. Formatting is stripped, tags are added to the body text...this is so disappointing.
On the bright side, their support is quite responsive, and it looks nice. But I'd give anything to go back to a working version.
It hurts me to review them negatively 1/5
I've centered my life around this app. I can't function without it, and i've been a die hard paying customer for years. Now Evernote is having all sorts of issues and i have to seek a replacement. absolutely inexcusable.
Formatting is extremely unreliable across platforms 1/5
By Traveler from MD, USA
With Evernote comes, in theory, the possibility of starting a note on iPad and finishing or proofreading it on a desktop computer, through the web application. This would be ideal if doing so was not also systematically messing up the formatting.
Most of my notes are bulleted lists with various levels of indentation. Any changes made on the desktop to a note created on iPad results in systematically losing all the indentations and I am left with a useless flat list of first-level bullets.
Evernote always had issues with formatting, but never to this point. This is extremely frustrating and I am ready to switch to something more reliable (after 5 years).
Review from former Evernote Employee 2/5
Let me start by saying that even though I was let go from the company without just cause I do not let that affect my overall felling of the Evernote service and product. The service, Mac application, and web applications all work superbly and help me in promoting Evernote to anyone and everyone. The iOS application however is not something I can stand behind. App icon notifications that appear and don't seem to actually correspond with anything within the app. Resolution for such an issue uninstall and then reinstall deleting all local data. Inconsistent note syncing and ordering issues. Same resolution. The companies main goal is always to quickly resolve your issue to shut you up and get you out of the queue without ever actually taking the time to find the root cause of your issue. Nor do they really care about your experience. It was a common theme whilst working at Evernote. They know you can't leave. They know literally no other application can do what Evernote does. So why focus their time and resources on the front end user experience. I will be an Evernote subscriber for life. I'm too deep and have gone too far. It is a huge component of my day to day life. The company and support team knows that is how a majority of their users feel which is why we consistently encounter halfway vetted applications and a feeling of disconnect between engineers and users. If you're new to Evernote be careful how deep you get in before you make the complete commitment.
Great app 4/5
Overall the best/feature packed notes app out there. Lacking a couple things including notebook encryption. Overall great!
Won't connect to server?! 1/5
This has been ongoing for a few months. I had gotten logged out of the app so I go back to login and it tells me its having trouble connecting to the server. I can't login and I can't get to any of my notes. This is a huge problem.
Hate the updates! 1/5
Is there any way to go back? The organization is awful now. Making me rethink my premium status.
Why are you ruining a good platform 2/5
When are we getting hyperlinks back? Its a basic feature and it saves clutter from pasting in full urls.
And why can't we get a proper tags page again? The only way for me to view notes under a tag is by favoriting them and that's just impractical. The one in settings does absolutely nothing. You can't edit the tags anymore, nor can I nest tags.
Currently: extremely useful app. 4/5
[Update 4: ok, the app is behaving as it should now. Seems reliable once again. Thanks for reaching out Evernote, and for fixing things "under the hood." With time and continued good behavior, will be happy to upgrade to 5 stars!]
[Update 3: would do no stars if an option. What's happening? Evernote used to be a quick and reliable platform -- no more. Just spent 20 minutes trying 3 times to simply paste some text, add a title to the note, change the file location from clippings. Wouldn't do it. I'm done. Microsoft is investing; Evernote is failing.]
[Update 2: Downgrading to one star...this app has become clunky and approaching unreliable on the iPad Pro and on my Macs. Never thought I'd say that for Evernote.
Stability and bug fixes badly needed so notes aren't lost, and syncing returns to a quick behind the scenes aspect.
Seems like you're piling on, rather than keeping things streamlined and smooth. Please don't ruin this!
[Update 1: agree with many of the recent reviewers...and I'm going to add this: I have noticed an unusual amount of blank "Notes"...and I believe that notes I thought were uploaded have not been--in other words I'm losing notes! Please fix the bugs. Thanks.]
Excellent app! Increasing my use and signed up for the Premium version too with its great features. This is a very stable, quick-to-sync (on all Apple devices) app.
1.Would be excellent if there was a way 'clip' websites when using my older mobile devices (pre iOS 8). But nice that you now have that for new iPhones/iPads.
2. Please stop the loading of Evernote's promo site for the web clipper when Safari opens on my Mac computers--this happens always after I've cleared Safari history and removed cookies. I want to be tracked as little as possible--and I already have the web clipper, so no promo needed. Thanks.
Missing features 3/5
Why can't I drag to refresh and get the most updated notes, I use Evernote as a clipboard and the syncing is less than effective
More bugs in latest release, lost formatting = data loss 1/5
Latest update fixed lag, however in notes where I had code snippets, the formatting is now gone and lines wrap where they shouldn't and the line spacing increased on notes I have not edited since the updates. The changes in formatting make the notes unreadable, which is a form of data loss.
Just tried latest update, issues still not fixed with formatting!
I am a premium user, how can I justify paying 60+ a year for this? I am going to Bear or Apple Notes. I am done with wrestling with workarounds to their issues. I want something hat just works, which Evernote did before the 8.0 update and the latest Mac update.
Message to support: I did already open a support ticket and they were not able to resolve the issue. I already migrated to Bear and will not renew my premium subscription with Evernote.
Repeat Apple password entry? 4/5
The subscription model introduced having to repeatedly enter your Apple password. This tends to happen at the most inopportune times, like when you need a really quick look at a note, you're in a hurry, or there's someone standing there watching you. Will submit a ticket next time it happens.
horrible app 1/5
Lose data every time, horrible text styling, horrible documents organization.
Data corruption!! 1/5
- The app looks fantastic and is a great improvement in some cases
- adding notes is easy and the cards make it easy to scan through previous notes
- menus and navigations generally make sense
- Data corruption! For the first time, Evernote over wrote existing data. I am so mad and while I am 99% sure I did not do it myself since it happened right in front my my eyes! -- I'm going to be watching to see if this happens again and I'll submit a support request
- it feels that there is a measurable delay in performance especially with the back button or the first time I launch the app
- I feel like the sync is less efficient since I lose notes or there are more conflicts where I need to go to my desktop to resolve. It use to be easier to deal with data conflicts
- i get this weird sense that my data is not always synced correctly or I've lost data but I can't confirm this yet since it could just be a search issue
I won't continue paying for this 1/5
I've subscribed to the top level premium subscription for ~5 years and have seen product development go from basic to directionless and back again without any appreciable improvement in quality.
Features have been removed, the UX over simplified, and the app is also severely broken. Offline downloads are impossible outside of selecting one notebook at a time and ensuring the device doesn't sleep because EN is syncing at an astonishingly slow 5kbps, destroying sync reliability.
A primary reason I subscribe is to have my changes archived and the ability to review/restore history, a useful feature which has been removed from the mobile app. The former UX design was more simplified than this hot mess.
As a revenue-generating customer, I'm tired of Evernote's inability to communicate with their customers to determine what it is we want. When user acceptance is this low, something is wrong at the organization. I won't continue as a subscriber unless I see material improvement before my term expires.
Bring back "presentation mode"! 2/5
This was a premium feature that fetched actual cash and was the main and often only reason customers paid money. This has been eliminated. What?
Problems with note body and keyboard within app 1/5
Now note text is cut off by the keyboard at a certain point and when you scroll, it does no good! Also, trying to open notes (and pretty much anything you try to do) causes the app to crash! Please fix or I will be canceling my Premium subscription and possibly finding an alternative to Evernote. This is pathetic! I used to recommend your service to everyone, but not anymore.😡 I am already starting to look into alternative solutions, so you'd better fix this app and fast!
Spiraling downhill 1/5
I have been a premium member for over 3 years and have seen this app go from great to utterly useless. It's gotten to the point the app on my iPad Pro won't even load pdfs from my notes even though all my notebooks are saved directly on my iPad.
I've been a heavy user of this app, utilizing it to be my main organizer and note taking app but I find I'm wasting more and more time on glitches and bugs with each subsequent update. I don't have, literally, hours a day to be wasting on a faulty program, so I will be discontinuing my premium membership and going to something else.
If you're looking to try this app to stay organized I would avoid wasting your time. I have years of stuff organized on here and now I have to transfer it out and try to integrate it into another program, which is a huge waste of time.
Supremely disappointed 1/5
By Lenny gaiter
I have been using evermore since 2010 and have been a huge fan of it but they have removed several features over the last several years. Or was bearable until I discovered you can't put links in your notes on mobile. That is a basic feature!
This is a deal breaker for me.... Switching all of my notes elsewhere.
What's your Competitive Advantage? 1/5
By Mouton Noir - X
Did you guys know that Microsoft OneNote has >/= more features? Did you also know that it's FREE on an unlimited number of devices? Also, did you know that it also includes an ENTIRE ECOSYSTEM of integrated web/productivity services? Let's see Evernote = Evernote chat.
Great App...BUT 3/5
By D. WALLZ
Love this app so much! HOWEVER... it would be GREAT if you all could bring back iOS Presentation mode!!!!!!!!! That would be great!
This app is horrible 1/5
I found it recommended from an art teacher and I was really disappointed with it. The app can't see shading or most colors. It rendered the images awkwardly and made them look horrible. The app doesn't work. Its a glorified notes app and apple has one for free pre-downloaded on the phone
Unable to sync, over and over 1/5
Some notes refuse to sync. Very frustrating. For how good the Evernote app is on Android, it is equally as horrible on iOS. Get your act together, Evernote, or I'm switching to Google Keep (please, don't make me do this).
New CEO has ruined Evernote 1/5
Ever since getting their new CEO, Evernote has gone gradually downhill. This version freezes, crashes and takes forever to load. Also one of my most important notes just won't sync anymore. No phone support and their email support is slow and incompetent.
Great app, ruined on Version 8.0 2/5
I really enjoy Evernote, on all platforms for personal and business use. But this last updated for iOS to version 8.0 is just awful. They layout is not faster but is painful to move around in. I see less on my screen - less notes through scrolling, less options, and less previews of notes. Very disappointed and hope you can get back to the product you gave us before.
Latest version is screwing up my notes!! 1/5
Beware! It is seriously destroying my notes I've spent so much time typing. I hope they fix it or else this app will fail. They are on the fast path to yik yak's fate at this rate.
Worst Version of the App 2/5
I depend heavily on Evernote but the Ipad version is the worst. It's nearly impossible to work with encrypted text: trying to highlight and select text temporarily locks the program then it selects some random block rather than where you're touching.
Why remove presentation mode on phone? Can we have it back? 2/5
Why remove presentation mode on phone?
Can we have it back?
The phone reading needs a night view version more than the computer. This is the reason I paid for it for years! If not fixed, I will not pay for it anymore.
Good but pricey 5/5
I really enjoy using Evernote and I haven't experienced the reliability issues that others have mentioned. I make sure to sync before closing the app and before I quit the desktop version. I like that version 8 is simplified and still functional. The scanner is top notch, the search is great, and the sync is quick and reliable. I'm a premium subscriber because of the device limits and for the improved search. I think premium is too expensive and would more happily pay 40-50 dollars a year instead of 70. That said, i still pay it because I find Evernote to be much more intuitive and the sync is much better than OneNote
Microsoft owes you thanks. 1/5
By Get a life please
Thanks Evernote for starting to charge to use your service on more than 2 devices. Without you doing that, I would have never found OneNote.
Again, I appreciate it. So does Microsoft. Time to copy my notes and move on.
Best app to keep you organized 3/5
Updated Review 2017:
From my 5 star rating from 2 years ago, I have no downgraded my review to 3 stars. There's a lot of issues with being able to save videos from my phone to the app. I noticed if the video is over 2 min., the app will just close out and not save. After closing out the app completely to try again, it keeps closing out still.
Review from 2015:
From storing documents, photos, receipts, the possibilities are endless. This app goes hand in hand with the other app, Scannable. Make sure you download both.
8.2.1 - Major table rendering bug 2/5
8.2 is faster than 8.0-8.1 so that is an improvement.
However, there is a new & extremely annoying bug in 8.2: tables are now "squished" to ~25% of the width of my iPhone's screen, making them basically useless and impossible to view.
** NO THIS HAS NOT BEEN FIXED IN 8.2.1 DESPITE THE RELEASE NOTES SAYING IT HAS ** To reproduce this bug, view a note that has a table with just a single column. You might ask "why one would create a 1-column wide table?" The answer is that it is a nice way to highlight a piece of information in a document by placing a border around the text and optionally choosing a background color.
I use tables A LOT; they are in practically all of my notes. So once again, 2 steps forward and 1 step back... PLEASE FIX
Was essential now essentially worthless. 1/5
I don't understand the thinking behind what has happened to Evernote. From the nonsense notes view being the only way to lead into the app to ruining how copying and moving notes I'm done.
I've moved on to Quip which does exactly what Evernote did and currently does that I need it do but doesn't even require a yearly fee.
Stop simplifying things by taking features away and making it more difficult to do simple tasks.
Shuts off 2/5
So the app won't stay running on my iPhone 7 long enough to do anything. I tried purchasing the next level. Still nothing so I'm canceling that. Unfortunately I have to do this on another device.
Not a huge fan of the changed Interface 2/5
I miss being able to control the keyboard. I hate how it comes up or goes away when I swipe. I liked having a dedicated button to make it go away. It's much more intuitive that way as i don't want to move where I am on the screen to make the keyboard go away. The whole point of making the keyboard go away is that it is in the way of what I'm looking at but if I have to swipe through my note to make it go away then I lost my spot. What is that?
PLEASE BRING BACK TITLES 3/5
I soooo much preferred when titles for new notes created in the app were automatically set based on location or any current calendar events!! It made it way way easier to visually organize my thoughts within my notebooks.
Now it's a little annoying to make a new note honestly, which is kinda the whole point of the app.....
I do NOT like this new layout. Tags are integral to my workflow and now they are almost and afterthought....Boo!!
What is Happening to Evernote 2/5
I was once an Evernote groupie spreading the message to anyone who would listen but lately I'm just disappointed and confused. The iPad app has been no exception - buggy, laggy, non-intuitive ui changes. What is going on here!?
Getting bloated 1/5
I have been using Evernote for YEARS. It used to be my go to app. Now, I rarely use it because the search tool is so unintuitive. There is no easy drop down menu on iOS to search a specific stack or set of stacks. I have to hope I remember the Boolean search that worked in the past. This used to be a great app... now its becoming bloatwear. I'm not sure how much longer I will stay with Evernote if the search usability and speed doesn't improve.
I've used this app for several years, paying for premium as well. In the past few weeks this app has crashed repeatedly. What's up and WHEN will it be fixed?!
Loses note data. The Main Thing of a note program 1/5
I've been a paying customer for several years now. I have a "plus" subscription at the moment. A month or so ago, some of my notes would load with no formatting and lime breaks. But, they would eventually be fixed on their own if I didn't edit them. They read just fine on the Windows PC app.
Now, there is a bad bug where iPhone notes are displaying the contents of the wrong note, and I just lost one of the notes because it got overwritten with the wrong contents and synced.
I'm leaving this platform. Many years of bloated buggy software, but cross platform syncing worked ok. Now if it cannot do the most important thing, sync and not lose information, it's history.
This update is really bad, especially for the table 2/5
This update is really bad, especially for the table
D@mn it EN, you screwed up these last releases! 1/5
So today I went in to my trusty note of in state hikes to get ideas, as I frequently do. The note's format is completely gone now! Paragraph format now; my bullets with headings are gone. I imagine my other notes are screwed up too. So I can either spend the time to fix it and hope Evernote doesn't screw me over again, or spend the time to move to OneNote. WHY!
Wonderful App/Wonderful Support 5/5
I use Evernote to record and catalog most of my personal life: recipes, medical appointments, To-Do lists, etc. I have almost 500 notes (200 of which are recipes). I am retired and because of occasional 'senior' moments I make lists and notes on absolutely everything.
I love Evernote's ease of use, organization and elegant design. I especially grateful to be able to share notes with my family.
I recently thought I was experiencing a problem and the Evernote support team responded to my query promptly. The issue turned out to be 'operator error' on my part.
I feel the price of this app is well worth it.
stay away 1/5
buggy, keeps asking for sign in info, does not keep files in order, cudtomer service does not respond.
