Gaia GPS Hiking Maps, Hike App app reviews

  • Works flawlessly! 5/5

    By Kdkkahwholdkjebd
My go to gps app for areas with no signal or hiking. Best for planning, tracking, dropping photos, offline gps, exploring, making memories!! Super easy on battery life.
  • Would give 4 stars if it was one time payment 2/5

    By Robovovovoovov
Quite the learning curve. I constantly have to work around small flaws while planning a trip. The makers seem reluctant to improve it as they suggested I buy their other subscription app to plan my trips. The app description says this is for planning trips.
  • Gouging customers 1/5

    By lil' lu lu
I have the old Offline Topo Maps and loved it. It was cheap, worked great and had access to good maps. Gaia's new app costs more and to get more maps you must "subscribe". Even when you do that, the new maps are lower quality. Stay away. There are better options elsewhere. I'm very disappointed
  • Best Off or Online mapping system for the outdoors. 5/5

    By reubenr1
I've been using this app for about 9 months or so, and although i am far from being expert on it, given its multitude of capacities, i can tell you that it beats anything out there for the money. I enjoy fishing in remote locations, especially, and this app sets it all up. It's far more intuitive than most with far greater capacities. Thanks!
  • Nice program 5/5

    By Frbear
Great to use. Automatically used different color routes for each day. Easy to see a days ride
  • Fantastic 5/5

    By DRockstar1927
Great App! I always download a Topo and Open Hiking HD map before my hikes.
  • Superb GPS; awesome support 5/5

    By 2dogsonfloor
I use this on an iPhone 7 for backpacking. It works flawlessly. Easily handles 3-day, 2-night trips without a recharge of the iPhone battery (mostly in Airplane mode). I’ve had this app for years (using it with prior iPhones) and the developer support and continued improvements are unparalleled. Best app I’ve ever purchased for my iPhone, by far. In my backpack this app replaced a Garmin GPSmap 60csx handheld unit. I am not affiliated with the developer or any of its employees, and I paid full price for the app.
  • My go to app for hiking 5/5

    By DTL in The Fort
I’ve been using this app for about three years now and have not been disappointed by it. Ease of use, excellent features, wide choices of map overlays, the ability to add photographs to the route, the flexibility of changing the icon for the waypoints, etc. etc. make this a must-have app for the outdoor enthusiast.
  • Really good just missing stand-alone Apple Watch usage 4/5

    By Justis63
I like the app a lot. It works very well when paired with a phone. The one downfall is the lack of being able to track a route with solely the use of the new cellular Apple Watch. I would love to leave my phone in the truck and look back later at my route.
  • I love Gaia GPS 5/5

    By k2mike
I don’t often need/want GPS data, so buying a GPS device seemed like a spendy waste of money and another thing to carry around and keep charged. I think it is way cool to have GPS capability in something I already carry around most days. Gaia GPS does what I need, recording routes traveled, mostly. The maps are small on my iPhone SE, but they are larger on an iPad. And I have made use of the ability to export routes for viewing on Google Earth.
  • Better than Garmin 5/5

    By Auratone
Been using this app on 14er hikes in Colorado. Not 100% accurate. Tested it multiple times against Garmin topo/location devices and this app is way more accurate. I keep an extra battery pack with me on hikes but even in -5 degree winter temps over 16-20 hour hikes, this app doesn’t completely drain my phone’s battery with it constantly running in the background while taking video and pictures. Totally worth the $$!
  • Lifesaver 5/5

    By larzmac
A literal lifesaver when you’re out in the wild. Just this winter, alone in a snowstorm, I couldn’t see more than 100 feet ahead of me. This app helped direct me to the quickest alternative trail out of the storm and back home to my wife. It’s very accurate, and full of information. As with any GPS tracker, it gobbles up battery, so I pull it out only occasionally, like I would a compass & map years ago.
  • Complicated 3/5

    By WeBJeepers
I find it to be too complicated even after watching you tube videos! Hard to get around in...
  • The #1 hiking gps. 5/5

    By Mordeth619
This app is an amazing hiking gps. Not only does it have dotted lines that follow pretty much every known hike that I have been on around San Diego, Yosemite, Zion, Joshua Tree, Kaua‘i, Seattle, Columbia River Gorge, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, etc. I have also used it for planning out and following my tracks on many hikes that have no trail, such as waterfalls that nobody knows about that I find on google earth then plot waypoints on Gaia. I have had the itch to buy a dedicated handheld gps multiple times, but every time after doing some research, I find that they don’t compare to Gaia. I have used this app as my main hiking GPS for 3 years, and it has never let me down.
  • Best hiking app ever 5/5

    By Koz1234
As a life long hiker I have tried every new technology/app for hiking. This app is hands down the most accurate, uses very little battery and has great integration into my Apple Watch (highly suggest getting an Apple watch to make the experience even better). Each update just keeps getting better. You won’t be disappointed.
  • Great for Jeep 5/5

    By Cadex74
LOVE this app. Fantastic for exploring and documenting what I find. Easy to share routes and coordinate group trips.
  • Love the versatility 5/5

    By Wdlfbio
I primarily use this for hunting. It’s great to download imagery and use offline. I pack.p my iPhone around, so no need for a standalone GPS now. Saves weight, plus I have a large screen. I enjoy the seamless transfer of tracks and whatnot to my iPad when I’m back in WiFi or cell range. Would be nice for them to communicate via Bluetooth though. The ownership map available with premium service is very helpful.
  • Really like this app 5/5

    By stestew
I use it all the time when I am hiking or backpacking.
  • Best gps app 5/5

    By mtn hiker799279
Downloaded the app and after a few hikes it quickly become my go to app for all my outdoor adventures!
  • No need for a Garmin! 5/5

    By Jordan Finke
This app is amazing for riding snowmobile and giving you statistics on how long you were riding, how long you were stopped, mapping your trails, and making waypoints so you can remember those sweet hill climb spots. Especially offline/no service!!! If you aren't happy with the sattilite imagery they have a hidden one under premium maps by ESRI which is amazing in rural Alaska! My only issue with the app as it stands right now is that on the iPhone X, you can't crop a track as the save button is under the iPhones top status bar, so then you have to force quit the app, which they have an update coming out soon for.
  • I’m going back to the old version 2/5

    By ERGre
I use this app mainly for backcountry skiing. I am using an iPhone 6s on latest iOS (11.2) and this is not functioning correctly. Half the buttons at the top of the screen do not appear at first then appear at random minutes later, if at all. There is no longer a slope angle shading option on he maps which helps keep me alive in avalanche terrain. And as a final blow, I purchased the premium membership months ago but the app does not acknowledge and I have no access to the premium features despite being charged.
  • Not much more than OSM 1/5

    By Whiskeyportal
There really isn’t anything other than OSM data in this app.
  • Great app but search function works best in portrait mode 4/5

    By Jo in Wisc
Gaia is a great hiking app but please fix the search function. A few letters are typed in and the drop down list appears. You cannot type more letters to make that list more concise. You cannot get out of the list. You have to close Gaia and start over. For such a great app the search feature should function better. January 17 update: I appreciate the fast response from the developer providing info about the app search functions that I had previously found. But you must be in portrait mode for the search function to work correctly. Suggest either rework search function to also work in landscape mode or include that limitation in help info. Still the best hiking GPS app available
  • Great Support Team 5/5

    By pictureliberty
Whenever I have a question it has been answered in short order. I love this app!
  • Best mapping app for off-road 5/5

    By J. Castle Clark
I have been using Gaia GPS for almost 4 years now at the time of this writing. I have tried every paid GPS app, and still none have outperformed Gaia GPS in any aspect. Powerful features for planning and organizing as well as navigating, such as access to many different types of high quality maps, automated route drawing, automatic route map area downloads, and of course route and waypoint importing, exporting, and organization within folders. This is by far, the best mapping app for off-road exploration.
  • Possible Bug on iPhone X UI running iOS 11.2.1 3/5

    By ERAUdarouze
When I attempt to crop a recorded track, there is no button (visible) to finish the cropping or go back to previous menu. I have to close the app to return to main menu.
  • Good stuff 5/5

    By Jello jeep
A little bit of a learning curve- but thus far the only app that shows actual 24k todo details. Bravo! Also fast response to question posted on their website. Keep up the good work!
  • Amazing Capabilities 5/5

    By Tomthereader
Highly recommended GPS app with lots of offline maps features!
  • Crashes upon startup 1/5

    By Trovador2
Can't even open the app 😰
  • Impressed 5/5

    By Eyedoc 27
I’m blown away by what you can do with the premium version. If you are interested in visiting the national parks then this is a no brainer. You can view what mile you are on in the river or on the trail. Great App!
  • Old Maps 3/5

    By BluestreakNC
I really like the app. I’ve had it for 12 months now. The most significant issue I have is outdated maps. For example: With Google Maps or my Hunt Stand App which uses Google Maps, it shows a property that I use that’s been clear cut. With the Gaia Sat Maps is still shows it with trees. Well, it was cut 22 months ago.
  • New version won't recognize my membership 1/5

    By yellowbusridah
I have the premium membership and it tells me so, but won't let me download maps
  • Love it! 5/5

    By Torbett472
I’ve been using Gaia for 3 years now. Take it on vacation to find trails. Provides all necessary info for prep.
  • Better trail marking 5/5

    By Otislame
Good day sports fans, I know thing’s in life is perfect, trust me, my wife let’s me know. Have a couple ideas. Get ride of the dash lines for trial. Use solid bolder colors. Very hard to fallow. Have the wording expand/enlarge with the map, again very hard to read at times. When static I will watch myself wonder around like a drunk snail. Make it so You can touch the screen at two points and learn the distance between the points, see elevation changes also. Enough of that. Thx’s. I love the fact you can import picture’s the location. When memorizing the trail and features, I use the picture’s. Thanks. Curtis. Best thing’s in life are not things, get out.
  • Fantastic app to go alongside your compass! 5/5

    By I0pk
This is a FANTASTIC app. I highly recommend it
  • Awesome 5/5

By The only one to play
I am a log truck driver and this app has been the best yet. If you know say the forest service road you need to be on just enter it and this app will take you there. It gives you all the info you will ever need. Drive time, stopped time, elevation etc. this is a must have app if you are doing anything outdoors.
  • Great app 5/5

    By Deltavelo
Best backcountry off in the woods app. I must for every from hiking to backwoods motorcycling
  • My go to activity tracking app 5/5

    By WITstudent
This app is very good These are the things I like most about it: 1. It is extremely stable. This is important in an activity tracking app. When you’re hiking in the winter and the windchill is -40 you don’t want to have to check on the app to see if it is still running. With Gaia I know it’s still tracking. It has never crashed on me. 2. It is extremely energy efficient. I’ve used a lot of tracking apps. Some will drain your battery too quickly. Gaia has always amazed me. I’ve used it to track 5 hours straight and my phone battery only drops by a few percentage points. Of course if you are constantly checking the map then it will drain faster but that is just the display, out of their control. When the screen is locked it is so efficient it’s amazing. 3. So many map sources. When hiking in the mountains it is very useful to have different maps at your disposal such as satellite maps and topo or contour maps from multiple sources as different sources sometimes have different trails. Gaia provides so many maps, and they are downloadable for offline use. 4. Very good meaningful updates with release notes! Gaia constantly improves and takes advantage of new frameworks and hardware when apple releases them. Continuous improvements are important with software on mobile platforms to maintain stability and Gaia is always on their game. Something that I think can be better: Speed and elevation graphs that can be interacted with. Like a way pinch to zoom in on the graphs, swiping to scrub forward and backward in time, and maybe a tap and hold gesture on the data line to show the ‘Y’ value at position ‘X’ as you drag your finger along the line so you can really analyze your data later.
  • AWESOME 5/5

    By Blair Johnson
Took me across the country from NC to CO on almost nothing but dirt trails. I use it to track hikes, off road trails, hunting locations, almost everything. Never loses me even without service. Fantastic app.
  • Go-to Navigation APP 5/5

    By s20055
This quickly became my go-to navigation APP. Accuracy, ease of use, great assortment of map layers...perfect APP for all of my outdoor activities. I use this APP exclusively for hiking, mountaineering, backpacking and now hunting. The Developers frequently provide timely updates and tweaks that continue to improve the APP. I have permanently retired the GPS and now only use this APP with a paper map and compass as a backup. I have found the clarity on an iPhone 6s to be superb. Downloading maps for offline use is quick and easy. So easy in fact that I don’t feel a need to accumulate downloaded information; use it, delete again if needed. Thanks Gaia for constantly making improvements!
  • Great For Hunting! 5/5

    By qac1991
I use this app to mark every tree I climb when I hunt. Once t is marked I can return the next morning without fumbling around in the dark trying to find a decent tree to attach my climber to. I am hoping they incorporate a few more features specified toward hunters using the app, such as wind direction at a marked location.
  • Some Nat Geo maps missing in Paid Version, but still has some great features. 3/5

    By Dude in the nude
I use this app for backpacking, and for the most part it works good, but I upgraded to the full version to get access to the Nat Geo maps only find out that the Maps for the Ozark Trail Maps aren’t available as a layer; it makes me wonder how many other maps are missing.
  • Highly recommend 5/5

    By wolfmansbro
My go to offline mapping app. Some of the best base map selections available. I’ve used it in Utah, along the Arizona Trail and on a trip to the Alps (offline Swiss Topos!). National Geographic trails illustrated maps are a nice addition. Wish the file structure was a little more intuitive.
  • Backpacking tested 5/5

    By M.NINE
I gave this app a live test on a 4 day backpacking trip off the grid. Subscribed to the premium membership so i could download maps offline. It was fast and smooth even on my old iPhone 6, which has otherwise slowed to a crawl since iOS 11 was released. Only crashed once in 4 days. Ideally it wouldn't crash at all but given the age of my phone I couldn't complain. Looking forward to this new update. It looks big!
  • The Most Amazing app I have ever owned 5/5

    By Zekex12
A friend told me about the app on the trail and showed it to me. Before I got home I had downloaded it. It has so many options and overlays. Absolutely wonderful
  • Poor iOS11.1.1 Integration 1/5

    By Dr. Krane
Multitasking window on iPad 13” is horribly buggy. Feature request: you know how you can select factors to track, like sunset speed etc. PLEASE ADD: altitude from which you’re looking from above. AND relative sunset/sunrise times depending on the Center of the map. ALSO please add relative time according to cosmic time, I believe this feature was present at one point, so it would not adhere to time zones, but would calculate actual astronomical time. If in nyc it’s 13:00 then in New Jersey it’s 13:02, you get the point.
  • Simply the best! 5/5

    By mburr1
This app has been a total game changer for me. Makes navigating in the backcountry so very easy... It turns your smartphone into a powerful gps tool that you can use virtually anywhere!!!
  • Easy to use, good support 5/5

    By Ringlemate
Best GPS app I have found. Excellent background maps and quick map downloads to use when going to areas with no cell service.
  • Great to plan routes for off-road riding 5/5

    By Julien velo
Downloaded the app and tested it for off-road motorcycle. The automatic tracing of a route over existing marked trails is an awesome feature that makes planning the route considerably easier than with Google Earth or Garmin Basecamp. I downloaded satellite image and usgs topo maps of the area I was riding in so I didn't need to rely on having network or not during the ride. Battery usage was reasonable and it can certainly last for 12 hours or more with every app turned off and airplane mode. The website is fairly good too. Only small complain is that the web app folder system is a little convoluted - it's not obvious at first where things go at first. The mobile app occasionally crashes while managing files, yet nothing was lost. Compare to a Garmin gps unit the only limitation is the device's gps accuracy and recording rate but it's no issue for off-road riding/driving, likely not an issue for hiking neither.
  • Sherpa7 5/5

Strange Because this app worked pretty good with downloaded maps ( I did pretty large areas ) It was supper accurate Love it and I will recommend it to anyone
