One problem 4/5
It's great except for one problem, it keeps on telling me I haven't validated my email address, but I have. Otherwise, great!
Greed really is killing the app! 1/5
By The Banana App Reviewer
Geocaching used to be a fun experience it was free for everyone. Ground speak became greedy they started charing us they removed and app we paid $10 for and gave us nothing back in return. Geocaching will die soon if ground speak doesn't fix the damage they have done. The app is also extremely buggy the classic app was much better!
Expensive - not long term friendly 2/5
I am very disappointed with the structure of this app … I bought the old one … the purpose of a one time buy is so I don’t have to subscribe … then the old app is discontinued, and prompts me to download this one, come to find out I can’t even see the geocaches that I already paid to see in the old app? That’s rotten… They should have ported over their old database for those that bought the other app. I only use it once every 6 months anyway … and today when I wanted to use it I found out that it’s been 12 months since I used it last.
… That being said, they did a good job with the user interface of this app; but I’m still frustrated that they are ripping off so many people with something that is free for just using the browser with, the only difference being you need to copy the coordinates to put into a separate app to get where you want to go.
Where’s the watch app? 3/5
Imagine if I could get a tap
On my wrist when I’m within a cache at a predetermined distance I set for alerts...😍
Best app ever! My family and I have the best time, using this app. Built in gps is icing on the cake. Worth every cent! 💗
Two more bite the dust. 5/5
Just introduced two fellow travelers to the GC world. They are smitten.
TB logging 3/5
Great app, but I miss being able to log a TB visit at the same time as a cache log...or at least I haven't figured out how to do that yet. Waiting for the caches to reload in order to log a TB visit is a drag. Great otherwise!
Wish the Compass worked better 3/5
Ever since the new app went into effect the compass on my IPhone 5 has been very inaccurate. Many times I've had a cache in my hand and the app is saying it's 30+ feet away
Please update for iPhone X 5/5
Love geocaching. Please update for iPhone X.
Great app 5/5
By W. B.
Makes geocaching anytime anyplace an option.
Black screen 1/5
Whenever I open the app it just says "updating" and shows a black screen and doesn't do anything. Doesn't even work. It's fully updated also.
This Version Needs Subscription 1/5
I love to do a random geocache with my family when out and about and to my surprise the original app had a pop up saying it was going to be non functional in march. So I decided to get the updated new app only to find that I need to pay monthly to use it. I paid $10 for the original app that lasted me years. I understand the need for more money to pay a developer to refresh and update an app. I would gladly pay another $10 for a new and improved version but the subscription price is just too high for the amount of geocaching we do. Good Bye Geocaching, It Was Nice While It Lasted.
Update: Crashes and the subscription model is a bad idea. Make it free for those who already paid $10. Still feel ripped off.
Used to love this app 1/5
On family trips we would use this app to go after various caches, and the kids had a blast. Now they killed it making me pay a premium subscription for it before I can see most caches. I don’t use it often enough to justify a subscription, and already paid $10 for the app when I originally downloaded it years ago. Unfortunately we don’t geocache anymore.
Money grabbing pure and simple!!!!!!!!!!!! 1/5
Updating your app will only make people resubmit their 1 star ratings over and over and over...........
Most caches are behind a paywall now. I already bought the "classic" app. Why did you get rid of it? Do the right thing and reinstate it!
In the meantime I've changed all my hidden caches to be 1.5 or less so everyone can see them. Everyone else should do the same thing!
Needs update for iPhone X 1/5
Funny your notes for the latest update say the UI was spruced up but you must be mistaken because it looks crappy on the iPhone X.
Falling behind 1/5
It seems with every update we lose more stuff, then gain others we don’t need. Just saying, it happens a lot!
Map is trash 1/5
Maybe if the map wasn’t garbage, the app would be better. I’ve used so many geocache apps that are better. Was hoping the OG would have it locked down. Wrong.
Lame money grab 1/5
I paid $10 for this app when it was released. Had a blast making finds when it was inconvenient to load and carry my gps. Now it's beyond crippleware.
Not the geocaching spirit 1/5
This app is not in the spirit of geocaching. As other reviewers have pointed out, the new subscription model is shady, and especially unfair to those who paid $10 for the old app and full access to all geocaches. They could have at least given the first few months free to the users who kept geocaching alive by paying for that old app. I can only the number of users has decreased with this new model, especially veterans like me.
$30 - $40 a year?? 2/5
I quit using this app several years ago. Just reloaded it, and now to find most of the caches you need to have a subscription, which costs $30 to $40 a year. I’m pretty sure I paid $5 or 6 bucks for this app already, now it’s a yearly subscription? No, thanks.
Love this app and geocaching
I hate the money grab 1/5
I always have my phone on me, and I could always grab a cache of any difficulty level at lunch or while out with my kids. Now I have to upgrade my groundspeak account to premium in order to navigate to any cache above a level 1. I haven’t cached in a while because of that. I even sold my GPSr a while back because I had my phone.
I was a huge advocate of caching. As a teacher I took my classes to cache in a local park. I wanted to introduce them to a completely free activity that helped them explore the world around them.
The old app was great, and allowed anyone with a smartphone to find any cache. That was good.
Geocaching is good for your health! 5/5
Geocaching is a wonderful activity for young and old. This site is the best!
By Kame Troll
Wish there was a straightforward way to log trackables
Don’t do it 1/5
Just google this app for the appalling details. I think it’s a couple of lawyers trying to make a buck on the back of dozens of volunteers. There are other ways to make geocaching work for you. Google those too. I paid 10 bucks for the last app and wasn’t offered a credit for this one. So disjointed, and so not in the spirit of a game in the public domain. I am beyond disappointed and will never recommend or praise this app over the other options available.
$30 a year? 1/5
Well they took all the fun out of this!
Not everyone has the money!
Why is my “Classic” app no longer working?
I’ve got 34 finds all over the U.S.!
What about $10 a year? You would have a lot more takers!
Not too happy 1/5
I used to love geocaching but then one day I got on my app and it said it was “retired.” I spent $10 on their app to receive access to all of the geocaches and now here I am stuck with an app that doesn’t work anymore and limited access yet again. Not sure how that’s fair since I paid $10 for the app... I don’t see how you can just take access away from people who already purchased it just because you’ve suddenly decided that you want to start having people subscribe.
Won’t even open 1/5
Title says it all. Force closes every time I try to open it. No other app on phone does it.
I deleted the app 1/5
By Alisha Weston
I paid $10 for the app a few years ago, it was great to go out with my phone instead of downloading from the computer to the GPS, and planning a whole trip. I could just go out for the day find 2 or 3 I’m not a “hardcore” cacher, and maybe that’s what the business model is trying to do is weed out the weekend cacher... but it just seems greedy, they were already making good money with the premium subscriptions, then they decided to charge the weekend cacher? I had to delete the app because I knew I’d never use it again!
Game Over... 1/5
I have been a premium member for years now and find the app limiting.
On more than one occasion it has not kept me logged in. Not a big deal, just a frustration for me, as I tend to have complex passwords.
The past week I went out to perform some maintenance on one of my caches and found that I could not log an owner maintenance visit. Seems that you have to use the web site for that action.\\
One part that I find very frustrating with the app is it acting like I do not know anything about geocaching and displaying "got it" messages. Perhaps this happens when the app is upgraded and it must have a indication of if it has displayed a "useful tip" to the user. How about an option to not display theses tips. I think that would be a better approach.
Another frustraton is the silly screen that appears when you near a cache that you are navigating to. Just a beep or a vibrate would be enough for me. I do not need to dismiss a message.
I also do not like the fact that my caches that are higher difficulty/terrain are now behind a pay wall if the user is using the app and not a standard hand held gps unit. At least with the web site and a loc file, users can find these caches if they wish. Seems like a money grab to me.
Update: I feel as a result of the paywall introduced by groundspeak, the find rate of my caches has fallen off, and I have gradually been removing them from the field. As I have no intreat in dumb dime-a-dozen, me too, caches, I am not planning on continuing as a premium member or paying the troll to find the scraps of bait left by greedy dirt bags sitting in their office. Later, groundspeak.
Can’t use it 3/5
The app crashes immediately every time I open it. Both my phone, and the app, are up to date.
Not Very Accurate 4/5
I love this app, great way to pass time on the weekends, but the GPS system is not very accurate. It often says I am 20+ feet away from the actual cache, which makes its a lot harder to find them. Would be 5 stars if this problem gets fixed!
Easy to use, just needs a translator 4/5
The app has been a great tool to use, easy and gets us to the geocaches. If you could add the ability to translate within the app, that would be great. I geocache in Europe and it makes it difficult to have to cut and paste from the app into another app for translating.
Recent versions very buggy 2/5
“Searching for Geocaches” then black screen.
Restart the app multiple times before finally showing local caches.
Wish I knew a way to revert to old stable version.
By Tyler Hinds
Couldn't someone find and meet you at the destination and possibly kidnap you?
This app 3/5
I love Geocaching. I dislike this app that makes it so much more difficult than it used to be.
Wish I could give 0 stars 1/5
Shame on you for charging so much for an activity that was enjoyed by so many. This app will be permanently deleted. My family used to geocache every once in awhile and enjoyed it, but not enough to pay $5.99/month. What, your profit margin wasn’t big enough after we paid $10 for the last premium? RIP-OFF!
Seems unethical... 1/5
This newer app requires a subscription to unlock certain features. Seems fair for new customers given the business model is changing to subscription based. But this app replaces a previous $10 geocaching app where many of these features were already available. Seems unethical that pre-existing customers will now lose what they already paid for. There are other apps that grandfather pre existing customers into the features that they already had. And it's worth noting that years ago, $10 for an app was a considerable cost back when apps averages $2-$3. And customers paid that price. That should be worth something today.
Use to love 1/5
By Tp :)
No longer free -only get 1.5 star or under for free from this app. :(everything else cost which is pretty much the only reason to geocache
App no longer functions 1/5
By Bud Lite65
Not sure what is going on, but since going to iOS 11, this application crashes every time on startup.
Never had to pay before 1/5
The old system was great! All the cache items were available and we would enjoy it a few times a year. Now, we get the new version and the 2 around us tell us we have to upgrade for premium.
Couldn’t manage without it 4/5
I love having geocaches at the tip of my finger. Wish I could mark my travel bugs having visited the cach with the app. Lately I can’t even been able to log left travel bugs with the app.
Slow and buggy 2/5
Used to work sufficiently, but now it’s just slow and buggy. It crashes all the time and I can’t really look at anything from a list view. What ever you did with this last update, roll it back and make it work well again.
I paid 10 bucks for the old app and now it’s useless.
Original was Better 1/5
By Biochemistry Student
I had the original app where you paid for the app not the premium account which was perfect for me as a very casual user. This set-up makes little sense as premium cachers are less likely to rely on their phones to find geocaches.
Battery usage, data usage, geocheckers, jingles 5/5
Lab caches do not shop up on this app. There needs to be a way so lab caches can be viewed.
Great improvements! Would like to see an easier way to view associated pictures from the gallery.
One bigger issue is that when caches are newly posted they are not showing up on this app for a while. Even with refreshing the app newly published caches do not show up. This is annoying as people with other apps do see these newly posted caches and people with this app do not. So when you are at an event and caches are published there and then you cannot join the game because your app does not work for this.
Adding to previous reviews:
1) newly published caches do not show up for a while
2) the compass does not update distance and this appears to be a glitch.
Adding to my previous review which was still neutral. After using this app for two full days finding roughly 30 caches I find the app does the following:
1. Drains batteries. After 3 hours it's time to plug in the emergency power.
2. Uses more data. In two days i used 60MB as compared to the old app where I used 150MB in 12 days of geocaching. The amount of time geocaching per day was about the same and the activity / number of finds per day similar.
3. The links to the geoChecker end up in a useless location.
4. I used the list of nearby caches frequently, the new app does not have this
5. Solved puzzles require a workaround by finding your final waypoint inside a menu. The map does not show where the solved puzzles are located.
6. How can I turnoff the jingle that says I am within 30ft of the cache?
My previous rating was *** my new rating is a *.
That jingle when you are approaching a cache is annoying. The messages on the screen when you DNF a cache or something else are nice for new cachers but if you know what you are doing they are not needed. Would like to see a menu to personalize (switch off/on) some functionalities.
7/16/16: would like to see disabled caches as well. How can we switch off or change it to something more discreet the jingle that goes of within 30'?
This App is why geocaching... 1/5
...is a dying activity!
I bought a new iPhone, so I needed a new geocaching app. My old Samsung android app worked very well, but it's not available for the iPhone.
This app won't even let me save a list as a basic member. I am DONE with geocaching!
Crashing every time I open! 2/5
App keeps crashing on the "updating" screen! Unusable and seriously frustrating!
Anything That Brings Joy is FUN 5/5
I'm probably the world's worst geocache (er), but I'm still having fun. Thanks for this app
