Too expensive 3/5
This app is exactly what I need but it would ironically be the most expensive reoccurring software payment in my budget. I love it because the categories (envelopes) are fully customizable, but they make you pay $17.99 every 3 months for more envelopes. That is ridiculous. It also doesn’t link to my bank account, which would have made the insane $17.99 slightly more tempting, but in the end I’m deleting the app simply because it’s just too expensive. I’m bummed because this app is exactly what I need.
EXACTLY what I needed 5/5
This app is amazing. I used the paper-envelope method successfully for years, but then started to get lazy & too addicted to my smartphone for all the paper. My finances became a total mess. I was in desperate need of something that emulated a style of budgeting that made sense to me, that was easy & simple, & that didn’t force me to link an app to my checking account (which I absolutely refuse to do). This app is all of those things & has been exactly what I needed to get back on track with my budgeting! I will say: the interface is a little counterintuitive & takes a little getting used to, but once you’ve got it it’s incredibly simple. It’s definitely not enough to give only 4/5 stars, in my opinion (which seems to be the only reason many other reviewers do). I am so grateful for this app & can see myself using this for years to come.
10 mins into using this app and I got lots of questions and still haven’t start budgeting. I feel like it’s adding extra frustration on top of managing my finances just trying to use/understand this app. I don’t get why everyone is so crazy about this dumb app.
Paid for extended but... 2/5
Money disappears, it tries to anticipate where you want money to go (and fails) it also assumes you make the same amount of income all the time which makes things frustrating for people whose income changes every week.
I was spending more time keeping and going through receipts every week (not to mention having to split up purchases to ensure correct receipts) than I use to before this app.
So I deleted all my accounts and envelopes. I created one account and three envelopes. I hope when my subscription runs out in 1 1/2 months it won’t mess up my envelopes.
Also, for all the other envelopes I deleted? I went out and got a good old fashioned mini binder and have been doing the rest by hand. Has cut my budgeting time in half. (Which is what the app was supposed to do. SMH)
$60/year subscription.. 2/5
App/concept is nice (budget vs expense based), but $60/year for a registered account..?
(The registration is required for useful app features and multiple account tracking.)
Nope, moving along.
Waste of time 1/5
Overly complicated design and layout. After hours of tediously entering everything in, it just crashes. I can’t access half the app. It’s simpler to just use notepad.
Fantastic, but needs updating 4/5
I LOVE GoodBudget, I’ve been sending people to GoodBudget since it was still called EEBA and no one could figure out what that meant. I’ve been using it for over 4 years now and GoodBudget and Dave Ramsey are the primary reasons my car wasn’t repossessed. It’s simple and easy to use, but another reviewer mentioned some stuff about the app and I have to agree. I’m still on a 6s, so I don’t know how it integrates on the X or the 8, but there’s still a lot that this app could do and doesn’t. I would love a feature that would let me take pictures of receipts so I can have them at tax time. And a way to tag things as tax deductible without having to create entirely new envelopes for it. I would also like an app that is optimized for my iPad, rather than just using the webpage. The other reviewer mentioned referral bonuses and that would be amazing.
Still waiting for iPhone X update 4/5
So far, so good... there are some things I’d do differently.. this I like and don’t like but overall it’s nice to be able to categorize everything by envelopes. I’m still learning how it all works so I don’t want to be critical but I don’t want to get to into it if the app doesn’t update regularly. I should be able to log into the app via Face ID and it should be full screen on an iPhone X... at least. Hope/need to see this soon. Thank you.
Spend Time With It 4/5
It’s a pretty good app. You may have to spend some time with it to familiarize yourself with how to work it at first. I wish there was a bit of a tutorial to get started. Aside from that, I would like an option to add a picture of my receipt for a transaction/email receipt attachment. Solid choice for a budget app nonetheless.
Only allows 10 items before they charge you 1/5
Will only let you add in 10 items into your bills/expenses before you have to pay for more. Also, don't add your personal info.
Very useful app 4/5
Have been very happy with the app for a long time, but please update it to make use of the iPhone X screen.
Easy to use App. Simple and very useful.
Allows me to take my bi weekly income, and divide it into different “envelopes”, where I designate a budget to each envelope.
Great until it’s not 2/5
This app was just what I was looking for until I needed additional envelopes. If there was a set price, I would have paid but I have no interest in paying a monthly fee. The entire point of this is for the budget. You’ve now added an extra line item to every month.
Has saved me thousands; but it’s time to step up the technology! 4/5
I have used Goodbudget for 3 years now, and it has absolutely changed my life. Even as a single-person household working in human services, Goodbudget helped me save a down payment for a house, which I bought 18 months after I began using the program. Today, Goodbudget helps make paying all the monthly bills possible and still have money for 401k and for whatever fun goals I set, such as saving up for an overseas vacation or a new car.
My parents began using Goodbudget a year ago, and they have also saved thousands within the course of a year. I can’t recommend this program enough.
That being said, it’s high time that the IT department stepped up its game. The app hasn’t been optimized for iPhone X, envelopes cannot be fully customized on the app, etc. If I’m going to keep recommending the app to all my friends, I hope they will step up their game and make the app something to be really proud of. (I don’t like recommending a program and then apologizing to my friends because the app is lacking in areas). Also, pricing could be reduced to attract more newcomers, in combination with starting a referral program so we could be rewarded for bringing Goodbudget brand new long term paying customers.
Great at first, but not practical long term 2/5

I'm not sure if I'm missing something but it seems as though the envelopes don't reset each pay period. I've set my budget period as semi-monthly but it doesn't seem to have any impact. I had assumed my envelopes would reset at the dates I set but nothing happens (leading me to question why it asked me to set dates in the first place).
Neat concept 3/5
I wish this could work but not enough free envelopes for this to work for me. I might consider paying one fixed amount to unlock the app but not interested in this expensive subscription. People looking for a budgeting app are trying to stop spending, not looking for $5+ a month subscriptions to keep track of.
Nice idea, but not intuitive... 2/5
By SB Local
And when I visit the help center to clarify terminology and usage, I receive instructions such as “ before you do anything take a deep breath...”. “ it’s best to start… With the information you already know”. If that type of information is useful, there are many other similar platitudes shared. I want to figure out why my budget for each “envelope” doubled and how to change it? Will the same budgeted amounts repeat and or rollover next month? I suspect the information is somewhere, but it’s like reading the small print to locate it.
Wasn’t a fan 2/5
I’m in college and desperately needed to manage my money. Started using this a few months ago and it was doing the trick but it’s very confusing to add money and it says your in the negative even though there still is money in the ”envelope” Not user friendly
Very Convenient 5/5
Makes setting money aside very easy. Never worry about having enough money for infrequent expenses or random gifts; just make an envelope for it.
By Optical S4
You can only put 10 lines in this budget before they want you to buy more space. Save your time and find another budget app.
Wish it would compare to income 1/5
I only went through the setup which was pretty easy. It never had me enter my income. So what’s the point if it would let you know what’s left from overall income instead of what’s in the envelops. So I’ve deleted and will look for something complete.
Very confusing app 3/5
I can’t figure out how to do anything. I’ll stick to the pennies app.
Looks good 3/5
Under the hood is another story.
$30 / 6 months for more accounts and envelopes?!? Just wow!!!
It helps! 5/5
This Good budget app is awesome. When I got paid, I knew what bills had to be paid. If i had Extra money above my budget like overtime pay or extra work. I knew I could put that money towards debt or savings. Both your spouse and you can manage with the same app and budget. You both know how much to spend on groceries, date night, etc. You only get ten monthly envelopes and 10 yearly envelopes. It was manageable if you put gym membership and car insurance in yearly. Awesome!
Very good app! 4/5
Good Budget was kind of confusing to learn at first. Now that I’ve been at it for a couple weeks, I REALLY like it. I was looking for a very simple system that emulated an envelope system that is familiar to a lot of talk radio fans. I never wanted to carry physical envelopes. That seems archaic to me and very inconvenient at times. I also wanted something I could set up to automate my weekly budget allotment deposits into those envelopes. Also important was that it be as close to free as possible. This app did all of that for me. I didn’t want to over complicate the number of envelopes, so I only have four. That makes this completely free for me. Like I said, it wasn’t user friendly to learn and some of the controls of the envelopes aren’t very intuitive, but now that I’ve learned the system, I have automated it to do exactly what I want. I figured it out quickly, but it did take a bit of effort on my part. I’m glad i did. I really like the user interface, too.
Needs an update 3/5
I have used good budget on Android for two years and I loved it! I recently switched to iPhone and so far I have one major complaint. When I go into an envelope or account, why doesn't it list the running total next to the transaction total? I use that feature to keep track of my expenses and make sure I pay from the correct sources and this app is half as useful to me without the running total listed out. If they fix this one issue I would happily keep paying the premium price and give it five stars for sure!
Switched from YNAB 4/5
Was looking for a YNAB alternative because I wanted the ability to create a budget using my take home pay for the month. Goodbudget allows me to plan for what I know I will spend and plan for how I am going to use the money I have but also to plan for money I will get later in the month.
I like seeing the bar graph fill and the envelope’s expression showing if I am on target for that particular envelope or I am ahead of schedule.
Also the website app is clean and not cluttered
Could be awesome...... 3/5
This app has great potential! Want to love so bad but why are the calculations so off? And the negative money in the unallocated envelope? Still needs much work..... hope these odd bugs get fix and it continues to improve!
Confusing for new user (and I'm 25!) 1/5
Read all about these great reviews but after an hour of messing around I'm so confused on how it works and what it means to fill an envelope vs adding. I'm in my 20s and good with technology but this is waaayyyy too complicated. Guess that's why people like it, I'm sure once you know what's going on you can personalize it. But not worth my energy to figure out..
What am I doing? 1/5
I added a bunch of envelopes, and put in my salary information, but now I'm stuck. How do I record an expenditure? Why is there no help file or FAQ in the app?
Love it! 5/5
I’ve been looking for this for 10 years!!! 5/5
By Jonny Chops
This app is remarkable to say the least. By far the best budgeting app I’ve ever used. Zero complaints all I have is 100% praise. You cannot beat the return on investment you get from this app.
This app is a confusing mess. 3/5
I keep trying to use this app but it’s a confusing mess. I would have an easier time budgeting my money on excel spreadsheet. It’s not as intuitive as it could be and I can’t recommend it.
This works for me! 5/5
I have struggled with spending a lot. This app makes it very easy to see what you’re spending on. Easy to set budgets and to see your spending habits.
I am using the $5 subscription because it gives more accounts and envelopes.
Love love love!
Good app. Refill lacks 4/5
The app has been great for my wife and I to keep in sync. However. Every month I have mess with getting the amounts correct in the envelopes. Part is my ignorance, but this app makes it non intuitive. Other apps are much easier, but you have to use iCloud to sync. Sharing Apple ID’s is a pain.
Love it! 5/5
This app has totally changed our life for the better! Helps my family Keep track of finances & stay on budget! Love it!
Best Budgeting App! 5/5
We’ve been using GoodBudget for over 5 years! Best digital envelope budgeting app out there!
Love Goodbudget! 5/5
By L c 317
Goodbudget is awesome. It's my "on the go" budget app. I love being able to "tell the future" of my account with the pending transactions. No one can go wrong with this app!
Extremely confusing 1/5
Don’t download unless you really want to struggle figuring out what you need to do, why you’re doing it, or what an envelope means in this app.
Difficult to use 2/5
One of the devices we were using this budgeting app on was set to reset at a different date. When it did the envelopes were refilled and I was unable to retrieve the previous budget.
I also do not like how it carries over the budget from the previous month and automatically adds in unspent money. I'd rather start fresh each month but cannot figure out how with this app.
Simple, awesome and powerful. Exactly what I needed
Math is off 1/5
By Llama paluza
When I add my weekly earnings the app comes up with a monthly total that’s off.
Example: $800 weekly and the app says I have a total of $3467 for the month! The app doesn’t give precise numbers and for that reason I will not be using it.
Awesome tracking tool! 5/5
By super scavenger
I love this budget tool. It's super helpful to help you keep track of day-to-day spending so you can stay with budget for things like gas, Groceries, pocket money, etc.
Great functionality cumbersome handling 3/5
App allows to split up money into different envelopes and book expenses against different envelopes. This is easy enough although I would wish to have a more graphical interface where I could swish virtual money around than typing in numbers. What makes handling extremely cumbersome is that moving money requires to choose from different functionality: Non-allocated to envelope and back, envelope to envelope etc. Much too complicated! Make it simple.
Negative money??? What? 4/5
So uhhhh yeah... the title speaks for its self.. when I put in an amount it shows up negative, any one else having this problem?
Awesome tool 5/5
By Kentucky cats girl
This app is great! It is helpful for our family to manage both our monthly and annual budgets.
Easy to use 5/5
I searched and searched for a simple app that would allow my husband and I to track spending together on a weekly budget. This one fits the bill perfectly and is easy to use. It's really helped us keep track of our budget!
Great and useful app 4/5
Have used this app for several years. Easy to use. Great way to track spending. The only addition I would make is to allow the movement of money to/from several different categories in one transaction. This can be done when recording receipts, but not when reallocating money within categories.
Monthly charge for more envelopes 3/5
If you want more than 10 envelopes they make you pay a monthly fee. I would be much more likely to pay $1 for each extra envelope. Just sayin.
This app has already saved me 1000s of dollars 5/5
I just started my third year using the goodbudget app. I used the free version for a year, by when I have realized that budgeting was saving me upwards of a hundred dollars each month. Simple keeping track of how much money I was spending each month in what categories helped me plan my budget and save money.
After a year, I was willing to pay $45 for a year of premium services (measly compared to how much the app helped me save already). The premium service is useful to compare how much I was paying for various categories across the years. Also, keeps me track balances on the ten credit cards I've racked up as well as my checking and savings accounts.
Goodbudget is a fantastic way to get financial literacy. Other apps (like Mint) which automatically sync with your accounts don't really work since there are many expenses which I've paid for friends and they pay back later.
It is a bit of work, entering each expense manually. But I have at most a handful of expenses each day and it takes just 30 seconds for each expense. Using those 30 seconds to enter an expense is more beneficial than spending those same 30 seconds looking at a cat video on instagram.
