The app freezes while watching and doesn't buffer well. Netflix continues to work so it's not my internet. If developers can fix this problem, I'd provide a higher rating!

1. Clicking a movie automatically plays, doesn't give a description, would be nice to discover things....nope unless you know what it is you're out of luck
Edit: This has been fixed by allowing access to description by clicking the title
2. Chromecast...can't scrub after you've started the video, close the menu, reopen (which is literally anytime you would want to scrub, e.g. Rewind)

3. Chromecast again...when you do get the ability to scrub, 80% of the time it hangs and disconnects you...I think due to this bug is why they've purposefully enacted the horrible user interaction of #2

4. There's no chainplay...are you kidding me? What year is this? If you're watching an older show you literally have to go search again for the show and manually hunt down the next episode after each one.
5. Watchlist is useless...who wants to put individual episodes in a watchlist one by one? And new one's don't get added automatically.

I mostly use this app with my Apple TV and rarely do I have any issues. When I do it's usually related to my isp.
As to the design of the app, it's a lot better than amazon prime for searching for movies. It's integrated with apples watch now app so that works as well. I normally end up searching for movies through my phone and setting them up in my watchlist because it is faster. All in all it's a great way to watch what I want without a mega super bundle costing $$$$ where I don't watch 10% of the content.

Constant Error Messages and Buffering 1/5
I signed up for HBO Now through my Amazon Fire Stick. So I am supposed to use my Amazon log in info. I am also supposed to have a free 30 day trial. I've been using it 2 days... and it constantly asks me to renew my subscription. I then have to delete the app and re download it. I thought it may have just been the Fire stick, so I downloaded the app on my iPhone and I get an error message every time I try to sign in.
Now I can watch a 3 hour movie on the Netflix app of my Amazon Fire stick without issue, but as soon as I turn on HBO Now... buffering, can't find account, error, renew subscription.
HBO has some good shows that I wanted to watch. That apparently won't be happening.

HBO is great. This app is not. Extremely slow when it's not crashing and it crashes frequently). Wouldn't recommend except that having access to HBO wherever I am and without a cable subscription is great. So here we are.
Everything is working great except the Genre button. You click it and it doesn't go anywhere. Now I have to scroll all the way down to the very end of the movie list. And that takes forever..

There is a 10 second back button and a 10 second forward button. The watchlist works great and there is a full selection of HBO titles--all of them and all seasons.
I would give five stars, but this update broke the genre search. It just doesn't work. Now I have to browse all to find a good action flick.

Ok, So i did the free trial of HBO NOW, and it was excellen! Their app is beautifully designed and easy to navigate (as opposed to hulu's new app 🙄) It's excellent. I have no clue why so many people seem to have an issue with it.
The only reason i didn't give it 5 stars, is because its just a liiiiitttle too expensive. When you compare it to Hulu and Netflix, It's a few more dollars per month, and on top of that, the amount of content is no where near as much. There are some stellar shows for sure, but chances are you can binge your way through all of them within your free trial month.
But yea. It's excellent. Try it out for a month at least.
When it works it works great, but a lot of times I can't even watch it because it either freezes, goes to audio-only, or shows an errors when I try to play something. Seriously!? I have 4G LTE service so it's not my phone, FIX THIS APP

Error message every time I try to add to my watch list, and now when trying to browse I can't even search by genre as when a genre is selected nothing happens. Fix it or I'll unsubscribe.

I am obsessed with so many HBO shows and I attempt to watch them on my smart TV, Roku, and Apple TV on my own high-speed internet and every time I start a show it stops about 10 minutes in and freezes and does not allow me to go back to the main menu for several minutes. It is so utterly irritating needing to stop several times for no apparent reason. I am going to cancel my subscription to HBO very soon if this does not get fixed.

Learn from Netflix app:
Have a play next episode feature, why should anyone have to backtrack to navigate to next episode?
If the app needs to restart, which it does ALL THE TIME, I have to fast forward and try to find the spot where I left off. WHY?! Save where the playback is.
I'm confused, this app has been illogical since the beginning, you think an update would come along eventually.

I love HBO shows and all but their app needs a lot of help. Plays correctly on phone but when you connect to Google Chrome Cast the loading time is horrible, buffering atrocious, and your patience wears very thin. The time bar also shows up randomly while the show plays or stays up and you can't do anything except close the app and try again. Needs work

Literally the worst app I've ever had. 90% of the movies on there that I have interests in will not load and freeze my console. Definitely not worth $15. I wouldn't pay $0.50 for the service.

My very first experience with an HBO subscription was through this app and it is absolutely terrible. More than half of the time when I choose to add something to my watchlist, I click the "Add to Watchlist" button and I either get a generic error message telling me to try again later, or it will appear as though the show has been added to the watchlist but will not actually appear in my watchlist section.
Sometimes I'll even get this error over 10 times in a row before I just give up.
Seems as though there is a lot of great content as far as movies and tv shows go, but all of that is worthless to me and a worthless investment by HBO if their app'a user experience is as terrible as it is now.
I just signed up for an HBO NOW account for $15/mo and if this is how they treat their customers, I will be unsubscribing soon.
I expect to see updates or receive some kind of customer support contact or HBO will have not only lost a subscriber, but will have developed an advocate for others to unsubscribe as well.

Why on Earth does one have to hit the back button and navigate to the next episode in a series? How clunky...take a lesson from the Netflix app and allow users to go immediately to the next episode in a series. Totally OK to ask if the user is still watching after, say, three episodes, but this business of goofy backtracking to get to the next episode is just dumb...
Misleading Verbiage for Trial 1/5
I was planning to subscribe to HBO NOW in a few weeks or so when I had a bit more money and thought I had not utilized the free trial yet (it was not in my expired subscriptions list) so I thought I would try that out and by the time I was charged in a month I'd have some extra money. The verbiage in the trial subscription is very misleading and I believe it is intentionally so. The pop up for me to confirm aligned with the previous indications of the free trial being offered, indicating I would be charged on July 13 (one month from the sign up date) but I found instead that I was charged immediately. I only noticed this because I was already in my settings checking my previous subscriptions, and otherwise might not have noticed for days (apple purchases usually come out of my account several days after they've been made) which would not have allowed me to expediently resolve this and receive a refund from Apple. I think this verbiage is purposefully misleading and should be changed, and it should be clear when there's a transition between reinstating a previous subscription or starting a free trial.

Stops working midstream constantly. I stream Netflix and Amazon and this is the only app that doesn't work. I have chromecast and a Xbox One and neither works.

I was so glad when this app became available. I don't really watch much tv therefore don't see the need for cable but another app and this one are by far my favorites! HBO always has quality movies and tv shows available. I can watch the new season of Game of Thrones without paying for a lot of other channels that I would never watch. I really appreciate them doing this. People will find anything to complain about don't listen to the negativity if you like the shows on HBO you'll love this app!

Why bother? Sling TV offers HBO as an add-on and includes live streaming. So do other services. I'm glad this was a free trial, as I'll be cancelling it.

So many more easier ways to stream content. Even though I had just signed up, it kept saying I had already signed up. I then logged on with the new account I had just registered, and it said renew your subscription. Pass.

I use chrome cast to beam the show. Sometimes it is fickle and will keep the progress bar at the bottom the whole show which is annoying to see. It also won't let me rewind or fast forward lately. Good shows but I would think they would have fixed these simple issues that Netflix hasn't had for years.

I have issues with quality like other users but let's be real, that's a connection issue not app issue. My chief complaint would be its just poorly designed. Poorly laid out, difficult to find things, no uniformity on various platforms (roku/iPad) does watchlist is for individual show episodes, can't build one for series, which makes no sense. Have to search for series to find it in a timely manner, at least it will remember recent searches sometimes. Had the update problem as well. The fact that there's no auto play is annoying, you'd think that'd be a given. At least the option for it.

To be upfront, I'm reviewing the Apple TV app. Since there's evidently no way to actually review Apple TV apps and I don't make a practice of leaving one star reviews without an explanation, here's my review.
Let's start with the good. This app provides access to all of HBO's content for a monthly fee. The fee isn't terribly competitive with the likes of Netflix, but you do get a few key television shows and a much better movie library. If that's worth $15 per month to you, then this is how you can get it without a cable subscription.
Now, the bad. The app is functional, but for the high subscription price it's extremely limited. Basic features are missing such as, apparently, the ability to add things to your list to watch later. Though to be fair, the entire implementation of the list is a bit… odd. You can add individual movies or TV episodes, but not entire series, which is probably what you want to do most of the time.
Next up, while the app does _mostly_ remember what you've watched (aside from a few odd instances), apparently it only does so for about a month. Again, HBO, for $15 per month, you can bother to actually remember which episodes I've watched when I come back to a series after a two month brake (or, for that matter, if the series itself goes on a brake). Even more annoying, frequently when a series has new episodes, the app won't even load them until I manually force close it via the tast switcher!
Finally, the streaming quality is pretty atrocious. Just look at the artifacts on the HBO intro near the start of every stream. (The one with television static, admittedly an unfortunate choice from a compression standpoint.)
Oh, and I hope you like ads. Because for $15 per month, you still get to watch (or waste time trying to skip through) a minute-long ad for _another_ HBO series every time you try to watch something.
All in all, I want to watch HBO's content and I want to pay them money to do so, but — unfortunately — less than legitimate sources still provide by far the best user experience. HBO, that’s a depressingly low bar to reach. If I’m paying a subscription to access you content and I’m _still_ tempted to pirate it, something is very wrong. Just look at Netflix if you need an example of how to do things (mostly) right.
Update: And a year later, literally none of these glaring flaws have been addressed in any way. Sorry, HBO. I'll pay for your TV when you decide it's worth your time to make an app that isn't broken and a complete pain to use in so many ways.
