Doesn't load shows 1/5
This app is terrible. Won't load the shows sometimes. Even after reinstalling it, still won't load the show, yet it will load the other shows in the series. Can't believe such a big company puts out such a crappy product.

On AppleTV, HBONow has improved somewhat from the dreadful user interface it had previously, though it's still much more clunky than Netflix. After being on AppleTV for several months, I recently tried to use the IOS App or website, and it refused to recognize me, even when I followed links embedded in their promotional emails. After going through FAQs, it seems that a separate "profile" is needed to use the app. It kept telling me it was sending me a password reset link, but it wasn't. If you don't have your original signup email, you have to email support to get a link to finish setting up your profile so you can use the app. Obviously, they're cable-oriented and don't understand the apps world.

This is hands down the worst streaming app available today...i cant believe a company as big as hbo cant put together a descent app. This app needs to be completely rebuilt.

The stream isn't consistent like Netflix. It freezes a lot. I have not had a problem like this with Netflix. The would be great if they fixed this. Looks like after my 30 day trail I won't be subscribing.
App crashes each time I try to stream a particular show. Customer service was a joke and problem persists. Wish the quality of this app lived up to the quality of HBO programming. HBO has great programming, is charging more than other streaming services and they can't develop a streaming service that doesn't sh%t the bed?

I love HBO content but this app is the worst. Crashes constantly on all 4 of my up to date iPad minis. Like 5 seconds into any show. Download if you enjoy paying $15/mo to be frustrated. Four thumbs way down. Should be free until they get it right.

Too much negativity on here because people trying to use with old phones. This is been the best app and it worked perfectly every time even if I am in the car. This is not designed for old PalmPilots or BlackBerries, this is a big boy app for smart phones. Thanks for a great app!
Your app is crap. Your website is crap. Your netcode is bad and you should feel bad.
This app is horrible. Feels like somebody at hbo is dedicated to make it as hard as possible to watch more than one episode a day of any show.
UX is bad, discovery is awkward at best, resuming a series the next day is incredibly complicated, and the app is full of bugs (headphones clicker has an undefined behavior, some shows jump back to being half seen, some shows claim new episodes that can't be found). The shows' images load incredibly slowly, turning the app into a mostly black screen half the time.
I find it harder and harder to justify 15 bucks a month for this app. The content is great, but what good is that if I can't watch it easily?

Billing Issues 1/5
I cancelled HBO now in March. Yet in May I got billed for ongoing service. I am glad I kept my receipt and will need to resole through Apple. I am glad I saved my cancellation.Also, HBO is great for the first two weeks but the content only updaes for series or television shows. It seems the movies never update and when they do, they are of less quality then what you can find elseware. I will keep my Nextflix, I am very happy with that.

Thing crashes at the drop of a hat. You can not watch certain programs. If it were free or cheaper it might be tolerable but charging such high monthly fees for such a terrible product is ridiculous. I will hang in for last season of GOT, then I'm out, unless they can show me they're serious about this app.

I signed up to HBO Now via my Apple TV, then tried to sign in on the iPhone app. The sign in is annoyingly confusing. First, what account do I use? I didn't have to create a password when signing in the Apple TV to begin. Which do I use now? The "reset password" accepted my email address, but I never got the email. Then the link to provider is unclear. Is it asking for my iTunes password or what? The UI is frustrating.

I haven't had *too* many technical issues with the app (aside from the fact that I've added Westworld to my watchlist a dozen times and it doesn't want to stay there but whatever). The bigger issue for me is the fact that this is by far the worst designed of all the video streaming apps I've used. It's inconsistent, oddly organized and totally counterintuitive. Even something as simple as starting the next episode is bizarrely not straightforward. I often have to navigate back to the show's page from the series list (because again, it won't stay in my watchlist), scroll down, and select the next episode. The "continue watching" tab is useless as far as I can tell. They really need to take a queue from Netflix and make it easier to resume watching your favorite shows. The service itself is fine, but the app was not thoughtfully designed. To say nothing of the bugs and crashes others are reporting.

How do you propose that we watch all of your great content if your streaming service is of such poor quality? We use multiple other steaming services (cord cutter) with hardly any issues; certainly not two to three times an episode seeing an Unable to Stream error. The quality of service is so terrible that I've canceled our monthly subscription. Smooth moves, HBO.

I subscribed only for GOT. The app on my phone constantly freezes, closes, and drains my phone battery, even when being casted to google chrome. Even the channel on my Roku is crappy. It won't allow me to watch another episode once one is finished and freezes my whole Roku. I will not pay for this once my free subscription is up.

One of the worst apps I have ever used. It's extremely slow. Even going between screens takes almost a min, even backing up to the previous screen. Roughly 99% of the time I end up having to reboot because it's a major resource leak. I'm surprised Apple even let it in the store. That along with "unable to load. Intent" errors or the app just exiting right in the middle of watching something. And pausing, well don't do that because it will take a long time to start it playing again and you may end up rebooting. If I could give it zero stars I would.
You would also think they could get movies that a rated higher than a couple stars that are newer than the decade old or older ones they have.

HBO was once the crown jewel in a cable tv lineup.
Not so much now in the post-cable, steaming era.
For one, it's way to expensive. There's just not enough original content to justify this high price. Netflix has far more and far better original content choices for a lot less money.
Next, and possibly the worst sin, HBO modifies a movies format. For example, Harry Potter is a widescreen film with a 2.33:1 aspect ratio. Instead of broadcasting the film in letterbox format, HBO crops the move to 16:9. FAIL! This makes most of their movie selection less than ideal to watch. Netflix shows all movies in their original format. Amazon Prime Video also preserves a films original format. A move should be shown in the format the filmmakers originally intended!
Also, there's no 4K support. For $11 a month, Netflix offers a good deal of 4K content, some of which supports Dolby Vision. Amazon Prime Video also offers 4K + HDR for movies and Tv shows.
In the world of steaming, HBO is no longer the cream of the crop...that spot goes to Netflix. Rather, you're 3rd best. It's time you started charging like you're 3rd best. $7 bucks a month sans 4K. $10 with 4K and STOP MODIFYING MOVIES TO FIT THE FORMAT OF TV SCREENS!!!!! Then, you'd have a subscriber. Until then, you can keep your content...I'll just keep watching Netflix.

The only reason I keep this app is because of the content. The shows are great. The app is TERRIBLE! I have to reset my wireless router to get it to connect to chrome cast every single time I want to start an episode. Netflix and Hulu work perfectly fine every time. Buttons just don't show up randomly. It keeps prompting me to finish a GoT episode from last year.
one of the first movie channels i can ever remember. you should talk to Netflix and ask them how to stream movies without interruptions, the HBO shows i would like to enjoy are constantly interrupted because of your lack of streaming tech.
fix this and i will continue my subscription past the free trial.
Authorization hold is BS 1/5
What they don't tell you on signing up for a free trial is that they'll perform an authorization hold on your account for a week. They charge you with no explanation and release the hold after 7-10 days. Also having trouble with a screen asking me to renew my subscription right after ordering. The BS that comes with this app isn't worth the shows/movies on the app and it's definitely not worth $15/mo. I'd rather watch GoT illegally.

This app used to be seriously buggy, but it looks like they fixed all of that in the latest update. Now it works seamlessly, and connects to my ChromeCast in a snap.
I'd give it five stars if it auto-played the next episode. Now, it plays the episode you select, and that episode only.... when it finishes it doesn't go to the next episode. That's the only thing I find lacking. Everything else is pretty much perfect.
Why do I need the app to sign up? 1/5
I just wanted to create and account and sign up. But they forced me to get the app. Then half way through registering the screen switches saying I'm logged in already and I need to renew. I never fully created an account. I could not log in or start the registration process over. Stuck in limbo. Tried sending password resets to my email but nothing showed up ever. So I guess no HBO Now for me.

This app should win an award for being the worst, slowest and laggiest thing in this universe. We updated iOS, HBO Now app, rebooted iPads. App still crashes, or switches to wifi audio only etc. When is this going to be fixed? Thanks

Consistently crashes when connecting to Chromecast Ultra 1/5
Every time I pair the app with my Chromecast Ultra, it immediately crashes the whole app. I then have to open up the app again to cast any shows. This behavior is very consistent, it happens every single time I cast to any of my Chromecast devices. I feel like this should have been addressed before releasing a new version of the app.

I used to be able to cast it to chromecast and then after an update the button to do it is gone. Then a new update brings the button back but it only pauses the video when I click it nothing else happens. Other than that it works pretty well

The layout is too segmented, and unintuitive (you can see movies or shows but can't select them until you pick a genre).
Most importantly, its so slow! It takes forever to load. The only app I have like that - everything loads quickly.
