Ugh. Almost makes me miss having Comcast 1/5
From starting with the beautiful and innovative old HBO Go app it feels like we are actually moving backwards.
App state and cast reconnection are the two most annoying issues. This loses its connection to chromecast and doesn't support Cast reconnection? Even that horrible Arnold war game remembers app state so you don't have to start from scratch every time you leave the app.

I don't understand why reviews for this app are bad. I got this streaming app last year to watch game of thrones and it was great and I canceled it for awhile until the show returns to watch the new season. This year I purchase the streaming service again because they have a vast selection of classics and they update on current movies that are out on redbox or the App Store.

App has issues - chromecast doesn't work 30% of the time (but is working on YouTube so not an issue w my setup), pausing in the middle of a program is impossible. Shockingly basic app that often has to be restarted.

This app is horrible. It doesn't work. Watch one episode and immediately shuts down. Start an episode and it kicks back to the main menu.
App Doesn't Support iPad Pro Features 3/5
App stopped supporting the iPad Pro's picture-in-picture feature. Very annoying.
This app is a literal steaming pile of garbage. The fact that it was even allowed on the App Store is incredible.
Though I see a ton of negative reviews, I've never had a problem with this app. I use the web interface for the TV and the app when I want to use my phone. Perfect every time and it works better than Amazon's app for me.
Thanks for pioneering and creating an app for those of us without TV's. Great work.
Needs serious update 1/5
This app is poorly designed. Trying to pick up an episode where you left off is a major pain. And switching between devices is even worse. App doesn't track where you left off so that you can resume from a different device. If it's the same account there's no reason for this. This needs to be fixed especially for a paid subscription to HBO. Unacceptable.
Might as well remove chrome cast support 1/5
It doesn't work at all. You can cast and then it will immediately disconnect on the iOS device but keep playing. Then you can't pause or skip ahead or anything on the iPhone. Netflix and Hulu don't have issues like this at all, so what's going on? Do you need a programmer because I'll fix this for you.
I love HBO and its original series but this app is so terrible it's almost not worth it. Most of the time it doesn't connect to chromecast for the first 2-5 times. When it does finally connect, you can't bring up the page to rewind or skip or turn closed captions on. After a period of about 5 minutes, you can't pause the show anymore either. So you have to reconnect and then hope it saved your place. There's no option for profiles either. I'm very disappointed to say the least.

Echoing others... we use chromecast and hbo now won't pull up your current place in the show to rewind/fast forward. Kind of annoying. Overall not as fluid, customized, or browsable as the Netflix app or YouTube apps. Other than that, I do love easy access to the content and that it plays with chromecast.
Works very poorly when trying to stream it to a media player like chromecast. Great content that you can't watch. I'm sure HBO could get an intern out of college to build a better app. Would give 0 stars if possible
Not worth the price 2/5
App is not worth the price. I experienced multiple issues with loading of home screen, as well as an annoying amount of buffering of movies and shows. Buffering would happen almost every time I used the app. I dislike how when the app can't load the video, it quits and tells you to retry after checking your internet connection. My interest connection may not be the best, but I think this app is the one with issues to be fixed. There were also times in which I couldn't load a movie and the app froze up at the error/retry message screen, and I had to restart my console. I don't have this many issues with other streaming apps that are less costly. Disappointed.
Doesn't work well with chromecast 1/5
I pay $15 a month to cast from my phone to the TV and this app randomly decides it just doesn't want to work. This is the only app that I have ever experienced with, and quite frankly I am very surprised. Why HBO hasn't figured this issue out yet is beyond me. If it keeps up over the next month, I'll be canceling my subscription.

Actually Chromecast works great with this App, you just need to know how to use it. When you find the show or movie you want to watch and start streaming it to your tv, you have to then click casting box on top right again to take you back to connect/ disconnect page. Once you set there your phone can click off or you can click out to look at other apps and when you either click your phone back on or click HBO app, the signal will still be connected. You can also press the small picture shown on that screen to pause/play anytime.

Not to mention that this app crashes often, the casting feature does NOT work half of the time. If you have to stop fit a moment, forget about getting it to work again. I'm paying too much for this subscription for this feature not to work properly.
Unable to set up account or watch any videos 1/5
This app is not user friendly. I have been trying set up an account since yesterday with no luck. Customer service is no help. This is very frustrating!!
HBO now service is so terrible and unusable I consider the application criminal in nature. Just what exactly is the problem HBOnow? How is it so difficult to create a valuable resource Netflix has been doing it for years successfully not only is your content not worth the dollar amount you charge the basic tools for usage are complete and utter garbage. I will never again use HBO now and I am sharing my experience with anyone who will listen.
Can't access iTunes subscription 1/5
Do not count on mobile access when deciding whether to buy HBO. I purchased a NOW subscription through iTunes. Works on my Apple TV but this app won't accept my credentials.

I love so many shows on HBO. But this app crashes constantly, audio is out of sync or stutters, and it's hard to find shows! Execution is just so sub-par compared to Hulu, Netflix, and every other tv app.

I appreciate all the thought put into HBOs content. However, the app is so horrendous I will not continue to pay for HBO. Netflix, Fandor, and Amazon video work with zero problems, but every time I try to use this app it wastes me hours of frustration.

Every time I close the app, it makes me reconnect my device to chrome cast . So, I cannot change the volume throughout ... Or, pause , or, whatever. They must know it's a trash app. Why won't they fix it ?

It's a good app, works fine for me most of the time, but for it being an app we have to pay to use we should be able to watch what hbo is streaming on its channel live.
Better than Expected 3/5
Works better than I expected based on the reviews. I haven't had streaming issues until the last week or so. I watch a couple episodes of a show & then the next episode just won't play. Hopefully reinstalling the app helps because I like having HBO but not being about to watch what I want is really annoying.

It says it works with Chromecast. It has a Chromecast button. Something shows up on the Chromecast when I hit it. It doesn't work with Chromecast...😡

This app works like crap. It makes you "renew subscription" constantly and has yet to work with my Chromecast. And they have the nerve to charge you $15/month. Failures. I'll keep my money.
PLEASE FIX CHROMECAST STREAMING 1/5
I originally bought a Chromecast to stream my HBO app. It's always had trouble streaming, but it's gotten worse instead of better. Now it won't connect AT ALL, no matter how I try to troubleshoot. If there isn't a change soon, I will be cancelling my subscription. Please fix and update!
Chrome Cast Fail 2/5
I mean, TECHNICALLY, it casts to my smart TV via Chromecast. But all controls, besides play/stop, are unavailable. I pay you $15 a month. Try harder.
Too many ads 2/5
Disappointing that it makes you watch an ad (for other hbo shows) every time you start a title. That is especially frustrating since it crashes so often and you have to rewatch the same ad over again when restarting the show.
Only saving grace of this app is the access to exclusive content.
"This is an audio only stream..." 1/5
Frequently, while watching something, the picture will switch to a black screen that states "This is an audio only stream..." because my connection has slowed. Getting video streaming again is not easy. No matter how fast my internet connection is, content is slow to load.
I frequently use Netflix, Showtime, and Amazon Prime video and they all have always worked better than this one.

Have tried to use it on AppleTv, Firestick, iPad, and iPhone. Usually crashes but sometimes freezes even though my wifi is 16mbps!!!

HBO has been a standard for high quality programming, but unfortunately this app is adequate at best and awful most of the time.
Forget about the clunky UI, that continue watching does not allow the next episode but only if you watch a portion of an episode, or only movies can be added to watchlist and tv shows can't unless you dig through several sections. The worst part is how often the app crashes. Real Time with Bill Maher being the worst; new episodes, old episodes, and clips will keep crashing the app.
$15 a month for a poorly optimized app.
Does not work at all with Google Cast. Keeps crashing. The timeline never goes away. They should learn a thing or two from Netflix.

Awful app. Really thoughtless to not allow reduction of bit rate to preserve video stream. Unless you're the only user on a 100Gbps WiFi network users can expect to get Audio-only. Please hire smarter people who allow users to adjust bit rate and download in advance if you want it to work like Amazon's which never fails. Netflix is not as good but way better than HBO and at least you can adjust bit rate. Upgrade your encoders and optimization at the network side HBO!
Unreliable, works 30% at best 1/5
This service and app are horrendous. Crashes. Errors. Unreliable. Prepare to waste 1 hour per week trying to get a service you are paying for to work. The app on the AppleTV is entirely wretched. HDCP errors. Reboot. Won't play anything, crashes as soon as you select a show. Completely frustrating, almost enough to go back to cable.
No PIP? Inexcusable 5/5
Picture in picture has been a feature on iPad for over a year now. It's inexcusable to not support PIP if your app is solely video content. That alone is enough for a one star rating in my book.

I emailed customer service about the app while casting and it's tremendous love for disconnecting randomly, freezing, staying stuck on closed captioning, disappearing when you open that app, etc. I was told to redownload. Been there, done that. After reading other reviews, I'm not alone. As much as I love the content on the app, it's non-functional when you try to pair it with your TV. Come on, HBO. Put a little money into fixing this app.
terrible chromcast 2/5
The Menu selection and organization looks good and is easy to navigate, but the chrome cast app disconnects and doesn't allow you to pause the video. We mainly use the chromecast for HBO now, so this maybe less of a problem for others.
Casting is horrendous 1/5
When you return to the app after backgrounding it (or after your device goes to sleep), the ability to control a current cast (through Chromecast) is completely lost. Come on HBO, you're a huge company under the auspices of an ever huger company and you can't find a single software engineer to fix this simple problem? Awful.

HBO has good solid contents, but it's a pain trying to search through their library or even to simply pick up where you left off in a series. It you use multiple devices it will not sync. If you start watching on Apple TV good luck finding where you were when using an iPhone or iPad. Netflix costs half as much with a much superior interface.
Works fine except for Chromecast 2/5
The app itself works perfectly fine on my iPhone. However, if I want to stream it to my TV, if I'm not using an Apple TV it is like I am being penalized. The chromecast experience is absolute garbage and constantly crashes the app, or, at the very least, makes it impossible for me to control the stream within the app because it offers no Chromecast controls. Fix it please, HBO. I am paying for a service that I expect to work well with all of my devices and it currently does not.

I've had this app for over a year now. For 14.99 a month I feel like it should be more user friendly. If I'm watching a series shouldn't the next episode queue up after an episode ends?

For a service that we pay for monthly, this app is terrible. We use our Xbox one to watch movies and shows. It buffers and you get sound but a frozen picture, over and over again. Fix the app for Xbox one, firestick and mobile. It's terrible!
Like the app, but Chromecast... 3/5
Chromecast functionality is spotty. Frequently can't resume where you left off, or get video to play, or have controls once play starts, and occasionally the tv displays play bar throughout entire program. Still, it works most of the time and it's a fine app when it does.
