It needs a lot of work 2/5
Update, when I had HBONOW, I could stream easily. Now that I have HBOGO, I can't stream shows that HBO showed live a few hours ago. Very disappointing, since I thought I would have the same services when I had cable with HBO.
They try to cheat you 1/5
They do the snarkiest thing in the books by offering you a 1 month "free" trial but require you to enter your credit card info before you can access it. They do that hoping that you will forget to cancel and then can charge you the next month rather than letting you experience it and then see if you want to buy it after. Therefore the trial is not actually free. I hate when companies try to take advantage of customers like this and therefore will not be trying their product. Amazon prime let's you try their product 100% FREE before buying.
Can you make an app that works? I'm tired of paying $15 a month for junk.
Chromecast Extension Broken 1/5
Despite a bug fix to "significantly improve chromecast experience," HBO NOW is painfully useless when casting to the device.
App stalls constantly, Xbox version is not any better. Very frustrating. Love the content but the apps need serious work.
No livestream 1/5
Why no livestream?? Showtime does.
Much better experience now running with my chrome cast. Let's hope it only improves from this point.
Good movie selection, but geez every movie/ show cuts off at any moment making a 2 hour movie into 4. $15 a month for this? Totally not worth it, but I'm gonna keep it anyway hoping for change. Either fix the problem or cut the prices c'mon HBO you're better than this
Can't even sign in using the correct login.
I don't know what happened, but after the update, this app crashes constantly. I can't finish a single episode of a show without the app crashing at least twice. It's very annoying.
Great Chrome Cast update! 5/5
To the people behind the HBO Now app- awesome job on the Chrome Cast update. Thanks so much for listening to the users who wrote reviews!!
Bug fixes 5/5
They completely revamped the chromecast side of HBO now. I haven't seen any glitches. No force closes. No more having to go back in 8 different times to try to pause or rewind your episode. It's all fixed. This is what I was waiting for.
Works perfectly on iPhone 6 for me... 5/5
No idea what all the terrible reviews and ratings are about. No crashes, not a hint of lag even on LTE. Seems perfect to me.
Buff, worthless Watchlist 1/5
I love me some HBO but goddamn the Watchlist is feature infuriating AF. There is no way to add shows, just episodes. Every time I want to watch an old episode of Sex and the City I have to search for it buried with all the other series. Also there is no easy way to get rid of shows in the "Continue Watching" section. If you stop a show it will stay in your Watchlist forever even if you don't want to finish it. I really wish HBO would show its devoted customers some respect and redesign this app.
Worst app ever!!!!! 1/5
By The shmuck
Does not work. Whoever created should get fired
Downloaded the free trail on my tv, crashes all the time. Now i download the app to my phone and it doesn't work.
This app may work fine on its own, but is terrible casting to my Chromecast. I stuck with it to watch all of Westworld, then cancelled my subscription. Example: if I try to pause and resume playback, I have to close the app and reboot my Chromecast to get back to watching. Hulu, Netflix, YouTube apps all work flawlessly with Chromecast. Boo HBO.
Garbage app 1/5
Can't sign in, watch anything, or enjoy my life knowing this is out there. Worst app ever. Sad!
HA! My IPad became a TV! 4/5
By 16 HORSES
I'm sort of surprised to see the late night stuff in the HBO app but i'm also not complaining about that either. Katie Morgan in Manhattan was crazy cause being naked in public is usually My Nightmare! So the HBO app is not perfect but it worked for me.
Finally works! 5/5
I had a 1-star review because this app was so buggy when it came to Chromecast, I had to kill the app each time I locked my phone. It was a terrible experience. Now, the app company listened to HBO's users and updated the app and the Chromecasting support COULD NOT BE BETTER. Thank you guys. All frustration and resentment are forgiven when you actually listen to your audience!
Why no desktop support? 1/5
I am in a hotel, all I have is a laptop.
Why can't I watch hbo now on my laptop!?
Just pathetic 1/5
Other than utterly failing to perform the most basic function for which the app is intended -- you know, watching shows -- it's great! I'm writing this looking at a frozen screen shot of John Oliver. Come on HBO, it's 2017. Fire all the losers who are even remotely involved with producing this app. I'm sure some slightly above-average high school students could do better. Shame!!! Shame!!!
Thx for fixing chromecast. 5/5
By Phunk Maester Presh
Better now that chrome cast issue was fixed.
Rip off 1/5
By Mrs banks
Purchased this app because I had HBO now in the states. I've relocated to Japan and purchased it again and found that it doesn't play here! So I can buy it, log in, but can't watch anything?! So basically, you stole my money! Such a rip off! If you're overseas military in Japan, you can't watch anything. Sad that HBO doesn't support military members overseas.
Finally figured it out. 5/5
This app was hands down the worst interface with my chromecasts. Flat out did not work. Ever.
Recent update is a great change for the better. So good it prompted me to write this review. Here's to hoping they don't change it.
Super glitchy 2/5
By Sappy pappy
I'm really surprised a big company like HBO (or whoever owns it), can't make an app without all the glitches. Once you get the show going it's fine, but don't pause for any more than a minute or it will come up with an error message and make you close and reopen the app.
The forward/rewind functionality is also just horrible. It's really hard to pinpoint if its going fast or slow, so I find have to go back and forth several times before I can get it to where I wanted. And even then chances of an error message are fairly good and I have to close and reopen.
I'm using the Xbox One app. So maybe it's issues with that particular platform. Though based on the average review rating here it looks like I'm not the only one that has issues.
some progress for chromecast 2/5
adding a star now that there is basic functionality like pause and rewind.
still wish it knew where i left off on shows so i don't have to hunt and guess which episode i am on.
how hard can it be to develop basic features like knowing where i left off in a series, pausing, rewinding, app not crashing? not worth the money!!
i've cancelled my subscription.
Hulu and Netflix are such better user experiences, for much less money.
mysterious errors, bad streaming, video stopping in the middle of a show.
"continue watching" feature is completely broken. it tells me I'm only partway through shows that I have completed weeks ago. unnecessarily clutters the screen. I tried to turn off the continue watching feature but it still displays.
also HBO Now does not keep track of where I am in a series. I can't pick up where I leave off. please try Netflix user experience for series. it is far more seamless. with HBO it is frustrating when I don't remember exactly which episode I saw, and I need to waste time watching again to find out where I left off.
What a disappointment 1/5
I had the subscription 6 or so days, and it kept pausing, followed by audio-only playback. After calling HBO the representatives kept insisting I try tech support so I did, with results proving that 1) I do, in fact, have fast internet and 2) no, restarting my iPad and reinstalling the app did not change a thing. I've asked HBO Now for at least a partial refund of my money, only to find out they have a no-refund policy past a certain time; Apple never got back to me about this.
Waste of my money.
I downloaded this app for the free month with this intention of paying for it going forward. I will NOT be continuing a paid subscription that doesn't work. Maybe you should have ensured that your app didn't crash every 5 minutes before offering a free trial month as I would never pay for such a spotty subscription.
Love stand alone HBO 3/5
I was an early HBO Now adopter. It is great to be able to see GOTs, WestWorld, etc. in real time or on demand. Occasionally, the app quits and it could have a few more features like auto play but overall I am happy.
Great content terrible app 1/5
HBO offers amazing content that you can't watch anywhere else but the app for it is just straight out trash. They need to model there app more like Netflix because the Netflix app works so smoothly. They also need to work on the watchlist because it should put the whole series not the individual episode. The thing I hate the most is sometimes it will stop showing the picture and only play the audio. Fix these problems HBO so you can strive.

Crash happy app 1/5
App keeps crashing when starting a show. Also randomly pauses and gives a blurry screen.
By I am annoyed2
I will literally NEVER watch HBO on my iPhone. Why do I need to download an app just to watch HBO on my PC or TV? Also, why is it so difficult to leave a review of an app? This review was canceled and deleted 3 times.
Latest update is Awesome 5/5
By Michael Walton
HBO has improved since I first signed up. I'm happy to see all the work ,I'm happy to watch now !!!! So much easier to navigate!
This app should be pulled! 1/5
It is 2017. How is it apple allows a nonfunctioning app to be in the App Store?! This app requires a monthly fee, it will take me a month to be able to watch one show! Maybe that is the tactic of HBO , watch one show over the course of a month because every three minutes the app freezes and it takes that long to watch one show. Great marketing hBO! Does HBO even read reviews? Must not because they would have fixed this app by now if they read any of them! The app does not work on Apple TV at all, won't even open!
MUCH better 5/5
Bravo. Most of the issues with casting have been resolved. The latest version of the app is leagues better than the previous one.
Content is great, app is trash 1/5
1. Clicking a movie automatically plays, doesn't give a description, would be nice to discover things....nope unless you know what it is you're out of luck
2. Chromecast...can't scrub after you've started the video, close the menu, reopen (which is literally anytime you would want to scrub, e.g. Rewind)
3. Chromecast again...when you do get the ability to scrub, 80% of the time it hangs and disconnects you...I think due to this bug is why they've purposefully enacted the horrible user interaction of #2
4. There's no chainplay...are you kidding me? What year is this? If you're watching an older show you literally have to go search again for the show and manually hunt down the next episode after each one.
5. Watchlist is useless...who wants to put individual episodes in a watchlist one by one? And new one's don't get added automatically.
2.2.0 ver. Update
"Greatly improves Chromecast experience"
Still no chainplay, still no scrubbing after you dismiss the initial screen...what's greatly improved? Looks just like a new screen for same crappy old behavior. Maybe they've resolved the issue where 80% of the time it would crash on that initial scrub...haven't had to use yet.
Thrones, Curb, Last Week Tonight, plus movies and great docs? Sold.
Exceptional programming and app 5/5
The latest update of the HBO app, an update self described as greatly improving the Chromecast experience, has done exactly what it promised. I enjoyed the programming to the point where I was willing to jump through the hoops previously required for the Chromecast option, but the latest update improved the app to the point it had me compelled to actually write a review. Thank you again HBO!
Great content but still not a great app 2/5
5/5 for content. Hands down, good stuff. However, app still struggles bigly. Sad. In previous version, chromecast function was super buggy. It is a bit better but now you are missing volume control for the chromecast. Minimizing the app then reopening resets chromecasting. It is also difficult to find a movie to watch, even though you have a decent size library. There are no user profiles to distinguish between family members. App displays movies to watch when you already watched them. I really hope to see improvements in the app. Hbo now is a great idea, needs better execution.
I've spent more on 25¢ gum balls over the course of my life than HBO spent on creating, maintaining, and debugging this app. Crashes constantly. There are several recurring bugs including the app closes itself mid-show and you cannot resume, rewind, or fast forward from your watching point, once you've started a show there's no visible time bar or pause button so don't go pee or miss one second of your show because you can't pause rewind or fast forward, the search results are a complete waste of time showing literally 10% of the content that is supposed to be available for HBO NOW customers. And, boy, their featured content suggestions are really rammed down your cake hole. No! I don't want to freaking watch Little freaking Big Lies!!! Am I rambling? Good. Now you have some idea of how slow the app behaves and responds. Love you HBO. Hate this app.
Just not a good app 3/5
Since most recent update, haven't had any problems! Well done HBO, well over due though.
Chromecast functionality is useless 2/5
I would give this app one star, but if you're using the mobile app it might be fine. It's Chromecast support is a joke.
The worst 1/5
This app is by far the worst of all the streaming apps. Constant freezing, delays. Can never just launch & go. Even on an iPad pro.
I don't see why everyone says it's so bad. I've been watching it on my iPhone and I haven't had a single problem out of the app.
Great improvement! 5/5
I was previously unhappy with chromecast support, but the new updates are fantastic! The app is a joy to use now--thanks for paying attention to the reviews
Not free! 1/5
It's not free. It's $15 a month. Not worth it!
Can't watch this 1/5
This sorry app that I'm paying for won't let me watch the one HBO show I want to watch. The show Real Time with Bill Maher causes the app to shut down every time I try to watch it. Now even trying to go to the shows page to pick the episode makes it glitch off. It's infuriating to constantly try and make the app work. They need to patch this quickly.
Great content but... 2/5
Great content, but a service like this (including monthly subscription) should at least have an average app. This app is terribly sub par: 1) major connectivity issues with chromecast (yes some of us don't want to splurge on an apple tv) 2) can't follow shows, just episodes 3) app quits unexpectedly. If FB is doing it with Snap, why not look at YouTube, NETFLIX, Hulu for "guidance"? Simple fixes would make this app great. A live stream would also be a great plus! Perhaps for a few key shows?
