Game Changer 5/5
We LOVE Homer! Our daughter struggled in school with letters, sounds, writing and overall confidence. Then was started using Homer. Her unique pathway grew her confidence and within a few weeks she was not only loving school again but also mastering writing skills and knew all the letter sounds! Homer was and is a game changer for our little one!
I’ve been trying to delete this app and it’s like they are holding me hostage just to keep getting my money and no one to reach out to stop this nonsense. Please if you have any contact information about this app please let me know. ASAP. Thank you. Nancy Belser
My daughter loves this app! 5/5
By iPhone Fan 500
My daughter asked me to write this review because she loves Homer so much. She has learned many reading concepts through this app. The graphics are good, she loves the stories and poetry, and she loves sounding out words.
Lot of bugs with this version. My son loves it but now it is difficult if not impossible to play it. Please help!
No good 1/5
Paid subscriber. The app loads and that's it, nothing else happens. Bummer.
Good luck canceling 1/5
To cancel long into your account. Oh, wait go to your iPad. I NEVER even opened the app via my iPad. But, I HAVE to login via my iPad to cancel. Ok...oh no. Now go back to my account via my Facebook. For the love of god let me cancel.
Even I deleted the app long time ago and unsubscribe from my Apple account, it keeps charging me, I have to reported 2 times already and still doing it ????
Fun when it works 3/5
My son loves playing the games and has really picked up some useful knowledge. It glitches sometimes and the only way to fix it is to delete the app and reinstall. I am really getting sick of that. When we open it, it won’t let you click on anything. Please help Homer developers.
Since update keeps freezing 5/5
Since the latest update every time we go to play the app freezes and crash haven’t been able to play since my renewal subscription please fix 😭😭😭
My kids play every day. 4/5
By Michele Stef
Two of my children, aged four and seven, ask to play this every day. I am very choosy about spending actual money in the App Store, but they liked the free trial and learned so much that I subscribed when it expired.
The four-year-old is regularly announcing facts like “Did you know that reptiles live on every continent?”
Personalizing the game with their interests makes them look forward to learning even more.
I only gave four stars because the app has been glitchy since the latest update. Sometimes it won’t progress past the load screen. Sometimes it freezes. Sometimes it closes unexpectedly. Sometimes my daughters pathway doesn’t show up. If the glitches can’t be fixed then regrettably I will have to cancel.
Won’t start 1/5
Constant issues on startup. Will crash and not load over and over.
Can't use it 1/5
I signed up for the free trial and now I can't access the app. Giving if 3 days and then cancelling.
Doesn’t work. 1/5
The app worked great during the trial period. I believe it had an update about three weeks in and then it would never work right after. It really was a good learning tool. Now it won’t go past the main menu without freezing.
Love it! 5/5
Great learning tool for my three year old. I can't believe how much she is learning. What a thoughtful app that personalizes a wonderful experience that motivates her to keep going. She loves learning. We love Homer!
I want a refund! 1/5
By Mommie & Mee
I have deleted this app from all our devices yet I was just charged again for it. We do not use the app. I deleted the app last month. It is not in my active subscriptions on my phone so I don’t know why I am still getting charged!
Excellent cumulative reading program 5/5
This is an excellent app that actually builds reading and spelling skills. It builds upon itself instead of just random words, it takes the child through each letter sound and blend. Then the child gets a large assortment of first readers (stories) with the new words they are learning and they can record their own voice reading the story. My daughter learned very quickly and enjoyed the app- she asked to use it on a regular basis. I love that I am able to keep the recordings of her reading and that she has actually learned to read. This is an excellent curriculum and app- my child and I both recommend!
Beware! In dispute now 1/5
Tried this for my daughter in first grade. She liked it but stopped using during trial period so I canceled the subscription and uninstalled app. A week later I was charged. My daughter wanted to try again so I reinstalled the app, but can’t create an account for my preschooler. Sent a support email. Nothing for a month. My daughter made progress then got locked out of her next learning path. Emailed support three days ago. Crickets. No phone number anywhere.
The app itself is pretty fun, obviously not super engaging or my kid wouldn’t have abandoned it for long stints. The reading level seems to max out a bit above k-1st reading level.
I downloaded and started the free trial. My child clicked on the pathway and completed the first question then nothing happened. We exited out and tried again. Same thing. Then we went to a different activity. He completed the first question, then it froze again. So I just canceled the trail and deleted the app. I didn’t want to give you a 1 start because I own a business and I know those stink but I wanted to let you know the issue I faced.
Can not cancel 1/5
Hard to use. Can not cancel autopayment :(
Freezes on opening 1/5
Freezes almost immediately on opening. This is really frustrating!
I couldn’t even get past the sign in screen. Kept saying I needed to be connected to the internet and I was
It’s clear to see this is educational 5/5
By Gavin’s Mom
My some kindergarten teacher just started using Homer too
Can’t open the app 1/5
Says I need internet connections and won’t go pass the intro page
Just let me into the app!! 1/5
I have an active membership and have been paying for my two kids to use the app for months. Just recently, my daughter's Version on her iPad will not start without asking me to create a whole new account. I have tried quitting and reinstalling the app, but it never recognizes my login. I have contacted customer support, and still have not heard anything from anyone in three days. It kills me that I am paying by the month to access this app, and I'm not being allowed to use it. IT'S A RIPOFF!
Would recommend but freezes a lot 3/5
I originally loved this app. My son enjoyed it and I liked that it was t repetitive. But recently he can barely play it since it freezes or won’t load at all. So now I am going to cancel my subscription but love the app when it works.
Dislike Pathways SO Much 1/5
Long time Homer user (almost 3 years, 2 kids). The new pathways are terrible. The Learn-To-Read was much better. Not worth the $75 a year. Still crashes a lot too.
Cons of Pathways:
- no autonomy on lessons
- profiles aren’t phonetic/letter identification focused (ex: my youngest only gets stories read to him and gives him color choosing games - no letter combo mastery to start reading)
- not goal oriented - no “mastered” letters or vowels (or mastered letter combos such as “pat”)
-no clear learn to read area means my kids may have to search through the games to find letter tracing or letter identification
- app becomes overall less reading-oriented due to above
Before with Learn-To-Read:
- easy consonant/vowel learning combos (ex: P, T, A, becomes early reading of tap/pat)
- can go back to completed sections for review if needed
- clear “end” after 26 lesson trees
- had distinct areas for letter learning vs education games (such as color identification, etc)
Just very disappointed. Loved and used to recommend this app to many parents. Now want my money back. Do not recommend unless they change the app back to previous structure which actually used to help my kids learn to read.
Great App 4/5
Pros: my son is highly motivated to learn to read and this app is awesome to help get him over the hurdle. It has several skills and he loves using it! I MUCH prefer his screen time spent this way to watching YouTube or cartoons!
Cons: I had a few issues with getting the app to work. Tech support was extremely responsive even over the Christmas/New Year’s holiday and stuck it out with me until we got it going!
Pretty good would recommend 3/5
I’ve only used the free trial so far.
It is great supplement for teaching your child along with other learning lessons you teach them do not use this solely alone. It does teach a lot in one app and seems it lives up to its advertisement. My son really enjoys it. I like the engagement of getting to respond to what you’ve learned as well as questions at the end of the lessons. Love the idea of a “pathway” that is personalized for each child to what their likes are although I couldn't pick all of the likes in the beginning had only a certain amount but overall it is a very smart app and my son seems to really like it, he asks to play it and is learning some from it so I think I will buy maybe a month to month and see how it goes from there.
Not so good:
It does freeze up sometimes and when my son went back to record his voice of what he wanted to say again about the lesson it wouldn’t allow him to so you have to only do it when you compete it and are still on that page, doesn’t seem you can go back and record. I don’t like that the stories don’t exactly match or complaint the lesson taught and overall just wish there was more to it. Also, it seems to specialize in reading but for the price I would like it to also be all basic subjects.
Pretty good, is simple learning. Has engaging, fun characters that seem to make the pathway exciting but wish there was more to it (subjects).
More accessibility PLS! 4/5
I love the app for my 1 yr old and 3 yr old but they have Amazon Fire's and I couldn't get it on there. It would also make it amazing if we could send the books and stuff to our Chromecast to cast it on the TV.
It would make it closer to it's worth per month. I'm still in the trial and going to make a decision whether I keep it but I wouldn't have to if those things were available.
Great program! 5/5
I’ve been using Homer with my 4 year old for about 3 months now, and I can really see her improvement! We do at least 3 lessons on her path a day, then I let her explore all the other categories. I especially like that it’s quality screen time, and not just something to keep her preoccupied.
Hooray Homer! 5/5
By Besting own
My daughter is already enjoying the Winter Reading Challenge! I love knowing she will continue learning, enjoying stories, and discovering during school vacation! Homer makes us both happy!
I’ve seen progress in my son’s reading from using Homer.
They sold my email address to a political campaign. 1/5
By Johnny Storm
I registered with a special email that allowed me to track where it would end up. Well it ended up in the hands of a political campaign. Please beware.
Doesn’t Work 1/5
I love the idea of this, but the app isn’t working. I signed up for the free trial subscription and my son’s first path is matching - there are only 3 cards showing up and there aren’t matches available but it keeps telling him to flip another card to find the match. Very frustrating. Will need to cancel the trial until it’s fixed.
Not Enough to Do! My 5 year old finished in one week :( 3/5
I love this app, but my daughter played for a week and finished it. It said she needed a new level and there were none. This is very disappointing. They say it’s for 4-8 but clearly that isn’t true. I wanted this to take her to the next level and would have subscribed but it does not have that capacity.
Can’t get out of annual renewal 1/5
I used this app with a student I tutored and paid a yearly subscription. I was charged for the next year, didn’t notice it, and never used it. I was charged for the following year and disputed it. It took several emails over several weeks of time but I think I finally got a refund. I told them I was not going to be using it again. This year, I was charged for a yearly subscription again. NOT a happy customer.
Great content with some big flaws 3/5
We had been subscribers to Homer for a few years. In the beginning we really loved it. Our kids were about 4 and 2 years old. Our daughter used Homer all the time and I do think it helped her reading skills. Both my kids were upset with the big update to the Wickles when they lost the carousel at the intro screen - I tend to agree. The carousel was lovely and easy. The Wickles are slow and the screen is crowded.
We continued on. Our son started using it often too and we were so very excited with the postcards. We were supposed to be able to log in in our own account and even have family members send postcards to our children. We could do it (sometimes) but our family members couldn’t and it had so many bugs. My son still made hundreds of postcards that just got sent to “Homer”.
Our biggest issue however, and the reason we stopped subscribing, was the user account issue. We had an account for our daughter and one for our son, and we should be able to create them- NOT the children. They were able to create extra accounts and use their sibling’s account and therefore tracking their progress and data was becoming very problematic. We contacted support several times but this issue was never resolved.
I was very sad because I REALLY think the content is amazing. The folk songs and illustrations are really gorgeous. The stories and history lessons amazing. The games are creative and the reading programs are well-done. And my kids loved getting their Saturday Surprise.
Because we stopped paying we lost ALL of our children’s data (all those amazing postcards, drawings and voice recordings) from their four years of use. Pretty disappointing :-(
Kindergarteners expected to read 5/5
Tried it because kindergarteners are expected to read. BEST PURCHASE EVER! Games and stories are short and keep interest. Content changes as my daughter continues along her pathway. She's already starting to recognize letters, even trying to name them. She saw a capital F and called it an E, but that's an amazing start! She loves making silly letter creatures and fairy stories with stickers. She can record her voice at the end of some of the stories, and the really great thing about that is that I can access all of her sticker pictures, voice recordings and such. Speaking of stories, there is a wide variety, including informational text, fantasy, science fiction, etc. and she gets to choose between three different stories each time. For as cheap as it is every month and how much my daughter is learning, this is the best purchase I've ever made!
This is a very child friendly, creative and informative app. My daughter loves it. And customer service has been especially helpful. Thank you, Homer🤩
Great app to improve reading 5/5
It is my daughter go-to app, she loves the stories and the songs and her reading skills keep improving. Thumbs up for Homer!
My son’s favorite!! 5/5
I recently downloaded homer and i can see how much my son loves it every time he opens up the app. Not only are the videos fun but then there’s some awesome lessons that really go in depth in teaching him to read and pronounce letters properly. I recommend it for any parent!
My 4 year old loves these stories! 5/5
And I love that he is engaged and learning, thanks Homer!!!
Great reading app! 5/5
My Daughter, 4, loves Homer! She has so much fun with each lesson
My daughter loves Homer! 5/5
My daughter can't get enough - she loves using "the pathway" and dressing up the wickles. The app does a great job of bing educational but still fun and engaging.
Not even worth a free trial 1/5
Takes forever to load and it was hard to understand and I have a masters in teaching...
It says iris free and has app purchases. However there is a monthly fee.
My kids love Homer! 5/5
I love this phonics program for all 3 of my children. They are ages 7,5, and 3 and there is something for each of them and they enjoy learning!
Love the pathways! 5/5
By Gina makes cake pops
We started Homer a few months ago and my son started learning his letters on his pathway. He absolutely loves Homer. There were some buggies but we reached out to their support team and their entire team was helpful in helping us troubleshoot. We're thrilled that they've fixed all the bugs that we saw in the latest version of the app!
So glad to be a grandma 5/5
This tool is a great supplement to school and is especially helpful as I watch the kids. It's something they actually want to do and I see them loving to read. The “Family” power word is our favorite—and we are loving the new Gratitude story. We have incorporated it into our nap time routine. We spend 15 min on Homer together, read two books, and then bed. Great variety of content for the grandkids-- even I learn something.
