Fantastic for star photography 5/5
By Ed Hendel
This app is so much better than the default Camera app for night photos. I love taking pictures of the stars out in the desert. Thank you so much for this app!
It’s all I use 5/5
By Wes Inman
Absolutely great, worth 100x it’s modest cost. I use NightCap for astrophotography with my Iphone5s and no other app will allow me to take great photos at night OR day. If you want an app that works in low light, this is the best!
I have tried 8 others, both paid and free; this app should be $20 easy 5/5
By Chris Cook NCPA
... i dont write reviews-ever- but if you want a true nightvision camera app, you literally wont find better- ive tried so many.
What this app does with low light i honestly thought couldnt be done on a phone (i have android too).
100% man- worth every penny and then some- you ahould totally charge more...
Great job - I hope this is your FT job bc if this is your work and its just a hobby, I’d think about a career change!
Awesome Control 5/5
I'm a professional photographer and I love the control I have over these pictures. I don't carry my Nikon everywhere, but I do carry my iPhone and this app does an amazing job!
#1 App on my iPhone 5/5
I have to honestly say, this is by far the best app I have ever downloaded for my iPhone. It has completely changed my life. I cannot express how thankful I am for this app for helping me follow my dream of being an aspiring Astrophotographer. With this app I didn’t have to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars for camera equipment to photograph the stars. Now I can do it with my iPhone 5s and NightCapPro. Best 2$ I spent my whole life. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Pretty impressive 5/5
By No Spring Chicken 66
This app impressed me. There are some good camera apps out there, but this one specializes in low-light pix and does it very well. It allows for very long exposures and high ISOs, and seems to use pixel averaging to minimize graininess. I can actually capture things in photos that are too faint to see with the naked eye, which is a little freaky (I could see Orion's shield in the photo but not when I looked at Orion directly). It does help to go over the manual—in particular, it helps to use it in bright light for a bit so that its AI can "learn," but that didn't take long. An app that found its niche and owns it.
Really cool app 5/5

Really fun app! Props to the developrers! Thank you!
Good For night photos 4/5
I haven’t spent a lot of time playing with this app, but I have noticed that it greatly helps me get better nighttime photos 🙂
Night stars app. 1/5
I spent time and money, and traveled to Goblin Valley to take star pictures. I bought a tripod and the iPhone 8 plus. What a disappointment! Nothing but dark pictures, no stars. I even tried longer exposures than the programmed app, that also failed. What a waste if time and money!
Awesome App 5/5
Definitely love this app. Clarity is pretty neat and the ability to do a lot with the features.
It's now an amazing app that lives up to its promise! 5/5
Updating my critical 3-star review of a previous version of this app. I believe it is important for users who have left pointed or somewhat negative reviews to update them when an app improves! The developer has worked magic on this. It's now a definite 5-star app.
The Nightcap Camera app is truly amazing. It's clear that the developer is an amateur astronomer -- or, at least, knows what is needed to capture well constellations, the ISS, star trails, meteor showers. etc.
While I still get several shots that are far too dark (not sure what is going on with that), I have also gotten incredible shots of constellations, the ISS and other satellites, and even mini-star trails (haven't gone for the gold, yet, on that score, with long exposures!).
INTERFACE AND SUGGESTIONS
The interface is intuitive and markedly improved. The app responds fluidly.
The app automatically saves to the built-in camera roll. I do not know if there's a way of directly moving from the app to the roll; if possible, it should be included.
The online tutorials are also great. Do wish, though, that the developer would incorporate more of the extended tutorials into a built-in help system -- that way, one wouldn't have to go online to read them. (The PDFs for the tutorials, which can be downloaded into iBooks, and read offline, end up with too small text to be readable on the iPhone!)
Suggestion: one tutorial makes too bold a statement that flashing lights are airplanes and not satellites! However, certain Iridium satellites and different rocket boosters are tumbling and show intermittent flashes or on-off patterns. So, that statement should be modified.
To the developer's credit, there are short explanations *within* the app when you tap on a mode. However, it would be helpful if the developer would provide an option to turn OFF those explanations because they overlay the screen and block the view of the Sky! They must be sent away each time. Once a user is familiar with the app, he or she doesn't need to see those any more. (Don't misunderstand this. They should still be available within the app or left on, if the user wishes.)
I still recommend that the tutorials and the app's website include more explicit caveats -- they still give the impression that all one has to do is open up the app, tap, and you will automatically get amazing night sky shots. While that is absolutely now much closer to being a reality, you will still need to take several photographs, change the position of the camera (use one of the mini tripods that come with a smartphone holder), and experiment. Still, the magic often comes easily.
You do not need dark skies to get good results!
In mag 4-4.5 skies, using Nightcap, I can photograph stars a magnitude fainter and capture constellations, the ISS, etc. While that's not nearly as deep as a digital camera with manual controls can go under those same skies, it beats the straight out-of-the-box iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, which CANNOT photograph the night sky at all! Nightcap makes night sky, beginning astrophotography, possible.
Note: The results you achieve will still depend upon sky conditions, which vary greatly from night to night, and even from hour to hour, or minute to minute, on a single night. Many nights have much greater *transparency* during which you can see -- and photograph -- many more stars!
Note: If you want to use a regular digital camera, be sure it's one that permits high ISOs (400+) with long exposures; many, irritatingly, limit ISO to 80 or 100 whenever the exposures are set for over 1 second, and end up doing a poor job capturing the stars. In fact, Nightcap Camera outperforms such digicams as it can go to ISO 3200 and it handles noise especially well. OTOH, with a digicam that can go to, say, ISO 800 with a 15-second exposures, you can readily capture mag 8 stars with colors and even show the brightest clusters and nebulae -- without a telescope!
NIGHT SKY STAR MODES
Nevertheless, Nightcap provides clear advantages over most digital cameras because they do not typically even have night sky photography modes. There are a few Canon cameras that have a Star Mode and can do star trails, but Nightcap provides more modes (ISS, Stars, Meteor, Star Trails, etc.) and they are readily accessible with a single tap.
What is also amazing about the app is that it renders the night sky well on the iPhone's screen itself -- a form of live view! Many digital cameras cannot do that and, those that can, do not show more than one or two of the brightest stars. With Nightcap, especially in ISS mode, one can literally see the night sky and stars appear on the display.
If you have any interest at all in capturing the night sky, with stars, using your iPhone or iPad, this is the app to get. It is well worth its low cost! Buying it also supports its continued development and rewards the developer for a job well done.
Indeed, Apple should buy this app and incorporate its features into its own camera app! It's that well designed!
Wouldn't save photos 1/5
Wouldn't save to my photos even though settings were correct. 😞

Amazing app with DSLR controls! 5/5
By Ace Combat Legend
For the longest time, I have been unable to pursue one of my favorite hobbies, due in large part to the cost of DSLR cameras. I'm of course talking about astrophotography.
However, with this app, I have finally been able to take amazing images through my Meade ETX-125 with unparalleled detail. M45 looks absolutely stunning, the nebulosity in the Orion Nebula is amazing, and I have even caught the dark area of the Black Eye Galaxy!
The controls on the app are a breeze to use, and anyone from the newest photographer to the professional can use this in minutes. And with the help of the built in AI, those new to photography need only tap a few things and they'll achieve amazing photographs.
There are so many things that I could say about the app and how I could praise it. But I will just say that this is worth every cent!
Great app 5/5
I totally love this app because I have found this one by reading an article on the best photo apps rated. It does what it stated and plus at a professional grade.
Good overall 4/5
I really like this app and tried photographing using a few different settings. I'm looking forward to trying to capture pictures of the stars at night. My only complaint is that it dropped my battery about 20% in 10 minutes. Any way this can be improved?

Fake Reviews? 1/5
I downloaded this app, the tutorial on line. No matter what settings I tried nothing worked. It was so grainy and just poor quality over all. Buyer beware.
Great app!! 5/5

I used this app to capture the Aurora here in Alaska, it's worked great! Definitely use a tripod for best results though. I love this app!! I can't wait to text it out some more!!! 🤗
This App is amazing. Very useful tool for IPhone

Excellent app. Great photos. 5/5
This is a great app. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. I initially gave four stars because of a perceived flaw, but the developers cared enough to reply to my initial review and really helped me out. Thanks.
Amazing, highly recommend 5/5

This app is a game changer. I got this app to take pictures of the night sky and I got amazing results. Once you get the hang of it you can take pictures like never before! Get this app!
Great app! 5/5
Very Cool 5/5
It takes a bit to get the hang of, but once you've got the basics down this little app is amazingly powerful and takes unique photos. I set it on light trails mode tonight and got some unbelievable shots of the fireflies in my back yard!
Excellent Night Photography App 5/5
Thank you, Chris, for your kind and patient explanation regarding my misunderstanding. I have now rated the app back up where it rightfully belongs. I was unsure how to get a response, but now I see I simply needed to ask, not mess with the rating. Thank you again. 💖👍🏻
Great app 5/5
A really good app for iPhones. Great if you want to get similar quality pictures of that of a regular camera. With customizable settings for ISO, aperture, etc. it is a great all around product. And app developer is really good in engaging with his audience, as he has helped me a lot and helped to get me noticed. 😀

Don't believe it? Search for #nightcappro or #nightcapproapp on Instagram or Twitter to see the results. Also check @NightCapApp and see the postings people have made. Many udpates, super customer support. Have tried several other low light apps and aways come back to this one. Best iPhone night sky app period. Key is phone needs to be still and use your headphones as a shutter switch. Works great in dim light too not just for the sky.
ATTENTION: The May 24th 2017 update is unbelievable! Can't say enough about the app. Like I posted above Please look on the developers web site for photos, check twitter / Instagram really it's pushing the iPhone camera to the limit. Photos are awesome!
This is the BEST 5/5
By Richard Ma yq
This app demonstrates what good developers are. You don't need to worry this app will stop update and kinda disappear after you purchase it like some other apps.
(iPhone 5s heats up really really fast while using this app, like 10sec, but my iPod touch doesn't, so it's probably a bug)
This app is amazing! 5/5
This is the best imaging application I have seen. It is easy to use and works! What more can I say? It works! Star trails, long exposure star field images, amazing time lapse videos of the night sky, fine control of ISO, exposure, focus and zoom. I just wish a $3000 DSLR had these type of features and was as easy to use. Thanks for creating this jewel!
Used ISS mode and got a great shot 1st try.
Please check focus for iPhone 7+ 4/5
This is one of my favorite camera apps! It makes night cityscapes 10x better. Thanks for updating to have support for the 7+!!! I still use it off my 5s and the focus and sharpness is perfect. Please update focus for the 7 plus! Focus is still a bit off on the 7+ wide angle at 100 focus. Tele lens seems to work perfectly.
Best iPhone Astrophotography app out there! 5/5
Great for low light environments and astrophotography!
Just incredible 5/5
I can take very good starscape photos with this app, far beyond what the iPhone should be capable of capturing
Northern lights! 5/5
Great app- I was able to catch some amazing pictures of the northern lights in Iceland that I couldn't have done with just my iPhone camera alone. I'm looking forward to using it on other trips this summer :) definitely worth the couple of dollars to get night pictures that you can actually see!!
Best night camera for iPhone 5/5
I love love loveee this app! It is defiantly worth buying! I also have a Nikon camera and honestly this app is better for taking pictures of stars! Highly recommend!!
Wonderful smartphone app !!! 5/5
For the last few weeks I have been testing NightCap Pro and a few other apps using my iPhone SE as a camera for my telescope. There was a clear winner, and it was NightCap Pro.
This app reduces noise by taking a series of short exposures, and then stacking them to produce the finished image. The results are incredible, and looks great without any further processing.
When using ISO 8000, I can use my smartphone as a real time finder instead of swithching back and forth with a visual eyepiece. This saves me a tremendous amount of time and effort in the observatory.
Keep up the good work,

Thank you Chris for this fantastic app! An amazing & indispensable tool that takes some of the finest quality shots amongst any of the "low lighters". Opens up whole new capabilities in daylight too so don't let the name fool you. Amazed all the things this crazy diamond does. User friendly, excellent docs and tutorials. If you don't have this in your camera bag of apps you are seriously missing out. I keep alongside ProCamera w/full, FiLMiC Pro, and Mavis. Nightcap Pro is a fraction of their prices but every bit as good and does things none of these other apps can do. Strong buy and a keeper for sure. Keep up the awesome work!
WOW ! This is so cool. 10 Stars ********** 5/5
I am so happy to finally see an App for the iPhone 6 plus that really works taking Video and Photos.
I see one review before mine and they gave it a bad review.
Maybe there is a problem on their phone can't say.
Let me tell you that there is a little getting use to the settings but when you spend just a little time practicing and learn the best setting you will be amazed how this app works.
I'd like to personally thank the Developers for the work you all have put into making this for what I feel is a professional application and should listed thereof.
I am going to check back in a while to see if anybody has commented on this app.
Would like to hear more of people and how it works.
Wish there was some way of me showing these beautiful pics/videos.
Great app + wifi function request 5/5
By Tangram Joe
Request: Is there any way to trigger/monitor this app from an iPad? Love this app, I've gotten some great photos of the Orion Nebula and even Andromeda.
My favorite photo app 5/5
I rate Nightcap Pro a notch above Adobe's Lightroom mobile. Both are very flexible photography apps. But, Nightcap Pro allows for easy long exposures. The results are very good with less apparent noise in images.
Do not waste your money 1/5
Tried the app after reading online how one person swears by this app for great night time pictures. I took it to the top of a mountain to get pictures of the super moon and stars.
I read the article and did everything they said to do and the pictures came out like crap and just as bad as a iPhone.
I want my money back.
Hard to use 1/5
Can't make heads or tails out of this app. Have not taken one good shot of the night sky with it. Tried to take a picture of the Super Moon tonight. No matter what I tried, I kept getting overexposed pictures. Finally I just gave up. Definitely not for me. The program is way too complicated. You have to be a professional photographer to use this app. Missed my shot of the Super Moon because of it. Wasted my money on this one. Live and learn.
Star trails are great! 5/5
I set my phone up on a tripod in my backyard the other night, pointed it at the North Star, and took a 3 hour long photo of the sky. You can see how the stars appear to move across the sky, circling the North Star. It even picked up 4 airplanes that flew past. I posted the picture on the Hubble telescope photos Facebook page. Check it out. Really happy with app!
I want to rate 5 stars 3/5
Oh, NightCap pro, you are so close. There have been multiple, heartbreaking occurrences where the perfect, hour(s)+ long light trail image is an amateur Nat Geo cover worthy photo, and..... No.. The app closed by itself???? The Apple watch application won't open???
Those times, I wish I could rate you with that one star.
But... It wouldn't be right. You save yourself with awesome smartphone images. Images that make Instagrammers from all around look at their lame photos in disgust and self doubt.
THE BIGGEST problem that (I think) would make much of this go away is really focusing on the Apple watch to iPhone control problems. When you need to adjust your camera angle, (especially without a tripod) and you are unable to see your own phone screen, Apple Watch is the PERFECT tool.
But then, the Apple watch disconnects from NightCap app, and you have no choice to use the side volume buttons to stop the picture, hands shaking, and it's ruined.
This could have been avoided if the watch app would just, stay strong, pull through, survive until the camera lense clicks. Then, watch application, you may take your rest. No one has a steady enough hand to click those stubborn side buttons, AND save the light trails picture from a scribbled mess.
Great app. Sweet photos. So close to being not frustrating. I'm no developer, but if I were, I would look into finding some way to add a security feature option for those lengthy or sensitive photos.. every so often, it will save a copy of the image, in case of crashing or an unfortunate movement at the last second of the image??
By Roger A. Stephenson
Absolutely love this app! Bought it just before Perseids started snd have captured somewhere north of 100 meteors since. A real bargain. Building a barn door tracker to use with star trails mode.
AWESOME but.... 5/5
By Bob G unc
Truly awesome. Really does an amazing job with low light. One wish: I just wish it had the option to save intervalometer imaged to video instead of dozens, hundreds, or thousands of individual photos.
Freeze bug 1/5
You can only record one video each time you open the app. After you stop recording hitting the record button again will do nothing. If you want to record another video you must exit the app. Shut down completely and then start over.
It Actually Works! 5/5
By Astronomy devotee
As a professional astronomer, I can say, in all honesty, that this app really does work.
Carefully read the instructions, find a dark location, make sure the iPhone is firmly attached to a tripod, and you're ready to go. One of the best astronomy/imaging apps that exists in the known universe!
Great for astrophotography 5/5
I use this app to capture planets, galaxies, and nebula with my iPhone 6s and 5" GOTO telescope. It takes a little while to figure out how the right settings but once you do it's amazing. I wish they'd release a second app that could do stacking on the phone, right now I have to use bootcamp and RegiStax to finish processing.
