Blocked after one order 1/5
I made a sale with prepaid card and everything was fine and then the next day they decided to ban me.. after a single completely legitimate order. Good thing I had already gotten my funds transferred out. Stick with PayPal and other reliable POS providers don't waste your time on this.
Terrible app and service 1/5
I set up an account for a small business I started. I started processing orders, international orders. Two of three went through without any problems. The third was out on hold. The the following week after submitting all of my business information, my account was deactivated! I tried to call to find out why and my because my account was deactivated I was only given the option for email customer service! Complete and awful service. Too make matters worse, they are holding MY money for 90 days before thy will allow me to transfer. If it were possible to give them negative stars I would. Don't use this app!
Goodbye Square! No customer service. 1/5
$132,000 in payments in 2016 with Square and I can't get help. I probably would have kept square, but I can't reach anyone for support. The automated system hangs up on me if I don't enter a customer number. My customer number is not on any reports, it is not in any of the emails, it does not correspond to the customer number on the IRS paperwork, it's not in the app. More than a little irritating.
My problem is a good one, we formed a corporation for our business and I need to associate the payments with our corporate EIN and not my personal social security number. I can't reach anyone for help! This caused me to look at the rates. We are being charged between 2.75 and 3.5%. We have added a credit card terminal and the rates from the bank 1.6% plus .10 cents. Good customer service might have caused me to overlook this. So by my quick calculation, we paid Square about $2300 more than what we would have paid the "evil" banks. No wonder they don't want you speaking with a human!

Three different times I had to provide A LOT of documentation and hoop jumping to get my money released. And on the 4th time, I complained to a representative that they've already put me thru this 3 times. He replies, "Well, we're doing it again."
Don't use Square. They just like to hold your money as long as possible.

Withholding funds, Shut down without notice 1/5
On two separate occasions, Square has brought my family business to a screeching halt by withholding our funds and shutting down our ability to conduct transactions without so much as a moment's notice. We service many soldiers overseas with our business and are keyed transactions raised several 'flags' for Square. I suppose asking a soldier to fly halfway around the world to conduct a $50 transaction in the middle of a war isn't ENTIRELY unreasonable Square? You're right, that is suspect. We have put a request into the Department of Defense that notified that a new article of war decree that we must provide all soldiers with a 7 day pass to fly home so they can load up on their protein. I'm done with Square as their monopoly over mobile payment has expired. We look forward to paying their competition to do a much better, American job.

You will be disappointed in the end with the quality of the app and customer service.
You have to have a code to get to customer service and if you have a problem accessing your account you can get the code.
While easy to use in some regards it is not intuitive in others.

I love the square!! It goes everywhere I go and does not require a phone line or charge me an arm and a leg to use their services!! Very speedy checkout and money's always in the bank when it's supposed to be!!

I've been with Square since 2011. For the first five years there was almost no outages.
As of 2017, there have been two in a matter of weeks.
Square doesn't care about the outages.
Time to find an alternative.

Chip reader has been rendered unusable by this update. Nearly every update in recent months has rendered the reader useless and takes days - sometimes a week to fix. Then next update repeats the problem.

With my iPad Pro and the Square chip card reader accepting credit cards is easier than a cash transaction. Working in a tourist area where no hard wired phone service is available using Square on my wireless iPad is a no brainer.

i've use square for the last five years with no problems. I even did one capital loan which I paid back quickly. For absolutely no reason on my account was deactivated permanently V of them yesterday with no notice other than an email telling me they did so and would hold my funds for 180 days. I read through every legal page they have and cannot find a single thing I did wrong. Once they deactivate your account you were no longer allowed to call them you can only email to which they haven't responded to me at all. So I had to spend my entire evening calling all my clients for the following day and telling them they had no choice but to bring cash or check to pay for services. Also I use them as an e-commerce on my website so I had to find someone else to do that and pay webmaster to change that around for me on no notice as I'm getting email that people can't sign up. Horrible way to treat someone who has high volume sales that you didn't kind profiting off.

I urge you to research Square before using their services.
Over and over you will see complaints that Square processes a payment, then almost immediately deactivates your account and then holds your funds.
Square approved my business account, processed one payment and deactivated my account without warning. It took 18 months for them to deposit over $800 into my back account...minus the processing fee.
I was lucky, Square is holding 10's of thousands of dollars from some business owners. I read one story about a business that went bankrupt because of this.
Again, I urge you to do your own research BEFORE using Square. The complaints are true.

Great app for small business. However I wished the app would allow for sub categories and also would allow you to set up tickets for take out/dine in/call in orders etc. I appreciate the fees being reasonable for the service. I gave a 4 because I bought the additional Emv swiper And it was a waste of money. The Emv chip reader worked once and then stopped working. I would like the 30 bucks back for that, but there is not a customer service team to help me with that, Thank you!

I started my Computer Repair business and tried a knock-off "Charge-it" which costed me 3% per swipe. Eventually they dropped me because I "couldn't make enough money". That's a bad service. Square helped with that! With very small fees per swipe I get to lower my rates and grab faster business! Who doesn't love square? I might invest in the chip reader next!

I started my business and was with square for almost 3 years. Received notice one day that my account was on hold due to policy violations? Apparently if you decide to purchase anything from your business you are cash advancing. I was never asked for any documentation, account just put on hold. Had to wait several days for resolution. Emailed customer service and was irritated, I asked for resolution or how to close my account. George from CS sent me procedures on how to close my account and told me if I called they'd be happy to close it for me. Nothing else. He was just like, who cares... Pricks! There are a number of competitors! I went with a way better rate!

They don't protect you, they approve transactions and then open a bunch of disputes that you always loose!
They take back money from yours bank account without asking before, they put you in hold for 30/40 minutes when you call them.
They let me loose more than 4 thousand dollars in 10 months!

Every time I go to a festival or concert that has merchants who use this they always say their square app is down. I REALLY think it has trouble keeping signal with all the Bluetooth going on at festivals. I waited in line sooo long because square was loading trying to take my money. Ended up not even being able to purchase things. Look into it!
Holds Your Money 1/5
We'd been using square for about 1.5-2yrs and LOVED it... However often they started holding our entire deposit if a customer was cancelling an order... Like holding Thousands of dollars for a $47.00 cancellation - that is the latest. Now all of the sudden I got an email saying they de-activated our account, we don't have phone support, and they say they are holding our funds for at least 90 days.... $10K... Terrible Terrible Customer Support when there is actually an issue.
Can't beat same day deposit.

We have been using SquareUp since 2011. As our catering/food truck business has grown so has Square. We love using this system because we are a mobile business and our entire system is also. The new options are wonderful thank you SquareUp. For being so user friendly and economical for small business owners.

I love using square for my business! It is so easy to use! The only downside is if you have a personal and business account you can't flip between the two. You have to log out completely. But other than that no complaints! Easy to use and easy to send invoices!

If you plug in your headphones and the Square app was the last thing running then get ready to wipe the blood from your ears. I feel like this would be an easy fix. This continues to be an issue....
This is a wonderful app that makes it easy to accept funds for my small business on the go. Funds are always in my bank account the next business day and I have never experienced any of the issues other users have reported in their ratings. I have been using this app for over a year and have never had a problem with it delivering exactly as promised. Completely satisfied!

Saturday being the biggest shopping day of the week you would think Square would have customers service. It's not like they don't have the money. So again on a Saturday when I needed to talk to a live person their closed. Within last 2 years my customers have called me after hours saying Square was sending them receipt notices on their phones or emails that they purchased items at others shops (after making purchases at my shop) with all their information including their Credit Cards.
Paper receipts with Apple Pay, please 1/5
Missing some very basic functionality for those using paper receipts:
---> Print paper receipts when people pay with Apple Pay so that our employees can get tips.
We are a restaurant and all of our tips go on the paper receipts so improving this functionality is important.
Also, Square should figure out how to make partial refunds show up in item reports and sales tax reports!

This is a great app with a good number of robust features to run a business. But this still has a lot of key features lacking. I switched from android to IOS and android version supports barcode scanners for a while now while this IOS version still doesn't.
This needs to have such a feature to stay competitive and make it a wholesome and viable solution for small businesses and startups.
I use square for trade shows where I display a lot of my merchandise and it gets had to keep tracking the item number of each item the customer wants to know the price of. It would be great if I had a barcode and a barcode scanner connected. I could scan the item and tell them price from the app quickly.
Please add barcode scanner support. Also very important, pls add a barcode generator for the items so it can be easier to keep inventory with square.
