Great app 5/5
For anyone who bought an overpriced Garmin gps, this app is a savior. First if all the battery consumption is great. Over 7 hours it only used 33% battery in my iphone 6s. The maps are easy to read and trails are well marked. Ap keeps track of elevation gain mph and distance hiked
Great app 5/5
Hats off to the developer. Multiple map layers, contour lines, hi-Rez maps, excellent direction and elevation tracker, easy waypoint system: what's not to love. Best part is that you can download maps from your device and use offline with gps even if your cell service is out of range. The pricing for the pro features are excellent because they respond well with the year long or just seasonal outdoorsmen.
Very nice to have even for one hike on vacation. Print maps.
Essential tool 5/5

A few minor bugs, but overall reliable and essential tool. Download maps in advance and locate your position anywhere your phone's gps works (almost everywhere, even remote places where there is no phone service.) I hike/backpack off trail frequently and have not been lost once in 2 years (several hundred miles) of using this tool. I still bring paper maps and a compass out of habit, but very rarely use them now.
Invaluable tool on our hikes! 5/5
Downloaded this app early this summer and it has gotten us out safely on a few close calls. We have barely touched the surface on its capabilities. Just upgraded for another year and look forward to learning all the little tips and tricks on one of our favorite apps. Just remember to plan and download before you get off line.
It really works!! 5/5
I recently did a 10 day off-road camping trip to the North Eastern Sierras where I took my jeep into the back country where I knew I would not have a signal of any kind. I preloaded the topographic maps into my cell phone and was amazed at how precise this mapping tool is. It was able to pinpoint my exact location at all times in areas where I would have otherwise needed to rely on a Garmin GPS with birds-eye imaging. Just make sure to download the maps prior to your trip. Amazing App!!
Great topo app 5/5
I have been using this for over a yr now. It is bear easy to use and extremely accurate. Earlier in the summer, I was looking to get on the PCT with a friend. We were going to start where the PCT crossed a dirt road. We weren't sure if it was going to be posted. As we approached the crossing, I opened the app and told my friend who was driving to stop when I saw the trail cross the road on the app. Looked out the window, and their was the trail. It is also quicker an more accurate than my Garmin GPS. GREAT FIND. M
Don't waste your money. 1/5
I have a iPad Air and it does not look good at all.
Never climb without it 5/5
By Lind In Idaho
We spend over 75 days a year climbing mostly In places without cell service- i never leave the house without my SPOT, my Sat Phone, and TopoMaps+ downloaded.....
By Tab and Scroll
I had questions about the app and developer responded quickly. Pretty impressive.
Free version has Offline Downloadable map chunks, decent resolution, and RELIABLE. GPS location compatible. I download the map chunks and use them with google earth when planning my 3-7 day hikes in "real" wilderness with only animal trails and forest service roads. I can use it for alternative routes (paths of least resistance) and emergency locations for rescue and water refill. ALWAYS share your path, and points of interest throughly with someone else, and be realistic. I can hike 4 MPH on clear roads and trails for 12 hours a day... But in the wild your paths are not straight, and the going is not that easy. For safety, I plan for 2 miles a day, and use the rest of the time for food, camp, and water. I don't want anyone fired from their job, hurt, lost, or freaking out wondering about the unknown if something were to happen to me. I'm a professional, and this a a simplified review. If you are confident, you are going to fail. Plan better. This tool helps.
Exactly as advertised! 5/5

I just returned from a week paddling in Quetico Provincial Park, a wilderness canoe area in Ontario, adjacent to the Boundary Waters in MN.
In the past, I've relied solely on a compass and map to navigate in Quetico, but this time I wanted a GPS backup (without buying an expensive GPS unit), i.e. a smartphone app.
I'd read some positive reviews of Topo Maps +, and contacted them with some questions. I ended up corresponding with Stephen Johnson, founder of Glacier Peak Studios.
He patiently walked me through the (simple and intuitive) set up, and guided me on how to download the maps I needed for Quetico into my smartphone, and explained how I could count on the phone's GPS capability even when I had no cell service or wifi in the bush.
Bottom line: five or six times last week, I opened the app (in Quetico, in the "middle of nowhere" with absolutely no cell or wifi service of any kind). Within 30 seconds or so, my phone was showing me EXACTLY where I was in high res detail (again, pinpointing my precise location on a particular lake, island, portage, etc.). Worked like a charm every time with no exceptions!
Cannot speak highly enough of the app or the support. If there were a six star rating, they'd get it from me!
Best app for planning and hiking 5/5
I've used (or tried to use) a number of online and iOS apps for planning backpacking trips, and Topo Maps+ is the most intuitive and easiest to use. In the field, it is also super easy, and I especially like the elevation profile for assessing climbing/descending progress and remaining effort. The new Mac version is also a very useful addition for tracing planned routes, whether on existing trails or cross country. I have found that the 'snap to trail' feature works much better than in other similar more popular apps (that I have abandoned due to ongoing frustrations.). I generally plan my trips on the Mac and sync to the iPhone. Organizing large numbers of routes and waypoints is easy with the categories feature. (I wish it was possible to sort waypoints by name.) I have used the import/export functions extensively and they are well supported in both the iOS and Mac versions. I have a Garmin inReach Explorer+ for emergency communication and as a navigational backup, and export from Topo Maps+ to load the inReach.
It's easy to download maps to the iPhone from the app for offline use while in the wilderness. Using the app intermittently while in the field doesn't consume much battery life in my experience.
The developer has been extremely responsive in fixing obscure bugs I have reported, sometimes even on the same day! Whether you're new to this type of app one even a long-term user of other similar apps, you would be well served to give Topo Maps+ a serious try. I have the Pro subscription and highly recommend it if you're an avid hiker or backpacker.
App is awesome for land nav 5/5
I use this app in conjunction with a bad elf gps unit on my iPhone and iPad to setup land nav courses and for plotting operation areas and waypoints on maps and it is so much faster and more accurate than by hand in most cases. I highly recommend this for anyone who uses compasses and maps frequently in the backcountry where cell reception is spotty or nonexistent. The Pro version is worth the money.
Great app works without cell service never get lost again!!
Great app! 5/5
This app is just what I've been looking for. It's easy to use, very accurate and tracks useful data.
You are good
Great app. Wonderful developer response! 5/5
This app has awesome maps and route tracking. I was having some issues with the maps and data loading but I emailed developer and got a quick response to help me out.
As a firefighter I was using this application before the last update. Now It is 100 times more useful. I love the ability to text a common location to several recipients. I use this every time we go out-of-county . It's a great way to keep the whole strike team on the same page. Thank you for a great useful tool!
This app keeps getting better!!!! I use it off duty too. When hiking and fishing. It's easy to share great fishing holes.
Great ap 5/5
Worth every penny.

Been using this app for awhile and i love it !!!!
Update causes app to become unusable 2/5
I'm on a brand new 10.5" iPad Pro, and using this app for more than about 15 seconds causes it to stutter, freeze, and lock up the app. The problems are made much worse when trying to trace a route on the map. It's basically unusable at the moment. Hope we get a stability update pushed.
Topo Maps 5/5
Awesome app. Saved me when I went off trail in the jungle. It would have been a long night alone. Revolutionizes backcountry navigation.
They go out of their way to make it blurry and pixelated when you zoom in, so then they can get you to pay. Awful way of running an app- thank goodness for paper maps!
Great app 5/5
Works great, used it to record property lines on our farm. Highly recommended
When you need to do more you need Topo 5/5
When you have to move 1300 meters of a trail up 57 meters guessing won't get it . I would have loved to have had this in the Army LRRP it would have saved time and lives .
I use it - it's easy- accurate- loss prevention . 5/5
I was taught map reading in the Marine Corp in the 60's They thought it was important. I used the mapping skills while In Country (Vietnam) and in the Pine Barrens of NJ.
Now Doing 3 x's per week hikes of 4 - 6 miles in the barrens has been tracked with this App. It's outstanding. I will be using it in Maine.
Get this U won't be sorry. I was born in 1945.

I was very impressed with this app! I typically use a Garmin eTrex 20 when I go in the backcountry. I brought this app with me as well as the Garmin on my recent trip and it worked very well! In fact I preferred using this app because it is easier to see and you can see more with the larger screen. I just use the low res maps and that seems to be good enough, sometime I may pay for the hi res maps so I can see more detail. Being able to download maps makes this useful anywhere.
Awesome Backcountry Mapping App 5/5
I use Topo Maps+ on my iPhone for my backpacking trips into remote regions. The ablility to add tracks from Google Earth (KML) is awesome for adding routes that don't already exist in the OpenStreetMap trails layer. Also, the battery usage is much lighter than many of the alternatives, which is critical when you are in the backcountry.
Nice consideration, excellent timing 5/5

I had not been able to use my last years' subscription due to unexpected health issues that knocked the wind out of my sails for the entire year. I wrote the author, owner and founder of Topo Trails to renew my subscription and he automatically renewed me for FREE! and wrote a personal note to encourage me to get out and get back at it!
I like being able to save the maps to my phone and use them when out in the back country, preview my hikes and save the routes I take. Also, the multiplicity of map formats available and bicycling route overlays make route finding a breeze! Thanks, Steven, for the hard work and great ap, a timely response to my questions and compassionate encouragement. It's nice to support such an passionate outdoors person and caring entrepreneur! Not That Good 1/5
A subscription for maps is ridiculous. The app is too slow on an iPhone 4S to be useful. You have to spend weeks of time downloading maps square by square instead of just downloading your whole state or region all at one time. There’s no POIs and roads blend into the contours so badly the map is useless when zoomed out. I’ll stick with a dedicated, waterproof GPS.
Very impressive..... 5/5
Deleted my other app once I started using this one. It's nice to be able to add way points, add notes, change the color of tracks, etc. (5 star). I very rarely give this rating to anything. This free app deserves it.
Great app! 5/5
I recently upgraded first to the Map Pass then to the Pro. I'm glad I upgraded to the Pro. You can choose from about 17 maps, though some are outside of the U.S. Most of the maps are high resolution quality. The maps have great detail. Many trails you see on this app you don't see on others. You can plan your hiking trip either by using "map trace" or pressing on one of the trails which then are highlighted and by using the crosshairs you can expand the trail and connect to other trails by just using the crosshairs. You have to practice with it but I'm getting the hang of it. It's like my first ever iPhone you just have to practice and play around with it. You can download your photos and use them as waypoints as well. Customer service is great. I got from help from Stephen who was the developer of this app. He said would either email me or would call me if I needed help. So I took him up on his offer and he called me up. How many people would do that. Great service! Happy I got this app.

Great feature set, easy to overlay open community routes and your own tracks and routes. Elevation recordings are pretty darn close to Garmin altimeter readings. You can also make favorite categories for routes and choose to only display those. The GPS + route of your choice + your favorite map provider and downloaded segments ensures you'll never get lost for your custom designed mountain biking or hiking off the beaten path adventures. Has truly saved me from taking wrong turns! Super easy to import GPX and KML exports from other services. The owner/developer is very receptive to feedback so email them with your features wish list.
Seems to do it all! 5/5

I just use this app with downloaded topos on a five-day backpack trip where there was no access to Internet at all. The app does everything that I can imagine being useful. My recommendation would be to spend the extra money for the high resolution maps – while the low resolution were readable, it would have been better to have had the high resolution. (A battery saving technique is to put your device in airplane mode.)
I love this app 5/5
By Just me thank you
This app is great..it would be awesome if you made this for android devices as well.i would certainly buy it again for my android phone and my friends and family would too because they're all on androids not apple iPads/IPhones so you would get a lot of buyers there as well.
Been using for 3 years and love this app 5/5
I used this app as a free service when it first came out years ago. Three years ago I paid for the plus version to get better resolution. This is an excellent value for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend!

Been using it for years and it just keeps getting better as it should, but beyond expectations.
Couldn't ask for better customer help either.
Great app for hiking with no cell service 5/5
Works great, one thing I wish they included was your altitude, but for free I can't complain.

it would b a great app,if you complete it....

Lost our way after red peak summit. Relied on this app to get us back on track.
Great UI, Maps Download is Impossible 2/5
Great app and user interface with some really cool features, but cannot download map segments for off-network use even when given hours on an 85 MBps wifi connection. Downloads about 1MB per hour and then eventually stalls.
Very disappointed I signed up for premium features since the app is relatively useless if you intend to use in remote areas without cell service.
Great nav app! 5/5
Easy to use and accurate all over the world.
Awesome app 5/5
Out of all the apps I've been researching through this one seems like the best option considering the features that come with the free version. The ability to make a printable map within the app and download maps within the app beats all navigation apps.
Great app 5/5
I'll be honest, I've used this app to get me out of a jam on a off trail in the woods more times than once, great work
I use it Often! 5/5
Great app. Works flawlessly.
I love this app!
