I love this app but it keeps crashing 3/5
Im a graphic designer and i use affinity ipad products for 75% of my work. I love affinity designer on my ipad...but recently its been crashing like crazy and not saving any of my work. Because of this iv actually been forced to switch back to adobe illustrator get my vectoring done. Please fix!
Update: color picker randomly stops working and I have to close and reopen the app to restart it....but it stops working again
Type tool 5/5
Please add and support right to left languages (arabic, persian,...) in type tools.
I love this app. However... 3/5
I can’t, currently, give it more than one star.
Since I upgraded to version 1.7.2 for the iPad, I (or apparently anyone else) am unable to import new brushes (for more details, see the Affinity website user forum). Even more annoyingly, I did not realize this until I purchased two brush sets from the Affinity store. Brush sets which were allegedly designed specifically for the iPad version of Designer!
There’s been no communication from Serif regarding when this issue will be corrected, which means that, for the time being, I’ve wasted my money (I did just find out that I can be issued a refund if I’m not satisfied with my purchase, so there’s that at least).
Whenever the good folks at Serif get around to fixing this REALLY annoying bug, I will amend this review.
Update: Thanks for your prompt response. However, I already have the newest version of Designer for iPad (1.7.3). Unfortunately, there is no change in my ability to import brushes. It simply doesn’t work.
If I "Airdrop" the brushes to the iPad from my iMac, I can accept the file, but nothing happens after that (the app should tell me that the brush has been loaded). Alternatively, if I put the brush files in a folder, and save them to the "Files" app, they appear "greyed-out" when I attempt to import them from the brush menu (using "import brushes").
Update #2: So, I discovered a simple workaround for this problem. I want to be clear that this is not a final solution (the bug still exists, and the app still isn’t working as it should), but if you come across this review, and are experiencing the same issues as I was, this is what you can do:
Upload your brush files to a cloud storage service (such as Dropbox or Box), and then import them from that location. This works perfectly, and all the files load as expected. It’s a little time consuming, but worth it if you need to use your brushes immediately.
At this time I’ll change my rating to 3 stars. If they ever issue an updated version with this problem fixed, I’ll change it to 5 stars (I really do love this app, but am disappointed that they released such a "buggy" version to consumers).
I am a beginning digital artist, so I don’t know much, but I do know that this app is POWERFUL. It has so many features, and that’s a good thing. The only problem here is a rather large one. When you open a document, you are greeted with said many features. There is no in-app tutorial for these tools, so you have to spend more time watching videos on their website than you are actually drawing. You’ll get the hang on it...eventually...but in the meantime, maybe add a short in-app tutorial!
This Update 4/5
I thought my next review would be giving praises and raising thoughts on some downfalls and annoyances. After this update, I have no praises and I wouldn’t know where to begin with the annoyances and issues. It’s disappointing and I’m not going to list the issues as I can’t be the only person this update as effected. It’s probably been mentioned before.
Not the easiest 3/5
I have played with this app after paying the 20$ and found that it is not the easiest to use. Tools don’t act as they should and you have to fight to get them to do what you want. If I select the fill tool it should immediately fill areas that I select and I haven’t had it work once. I can’t find a trace tool or a free draw that that isn’t advanced with editing the stroke. I am sure my review will change over use and getting to know the program but so far, using sketchbook and Art set has been much easier and cheaper.
Fantastic app! But 4/5
By Tommy Shamrox
Please add an image trace to this app, that is really all it is missing. Full image trace with ignore white, noise and threshold adjustment.
Not too worth it 1/5
As someone whose had an ipad pro for 4 years now and experimenting a lot with digital art, I do not like app at all. And this was 20 dollars! It’s got a good selection and tools if you need it. But there’s a lot, half the time I’m trying to draw and for some reason I can cause I clicked something by accident or I simple can’t and I have no idea what I did!
If you’re gonna spend the time to learn the ins and out and need a lot of tools for specific things that great! You might have a better time. But for someone like me who wants to draw immediately and with a good workspace it’s not here.
I want to love it, I really do, but it is a buggy mess on iOS 13. 2/5
I’ve been using Affinity Designer for months now, and it has been great sometimes and other times brutally unusable. I’m hoping for an update soon to fix the crashing problems, artboards that don’t work properly, preference panes that are a pain because they don’t always save, and a host of other issues I cant remember right now. I love the app design, layout and some of it’s functionality, but it really needs some tune up. I’ll end there so I can finish the project I had to send to Illustrator because Designer couldn’t deliver. :(
Vector brush is broken 1/5
Artifacts are created randomly with vector brushes. Program is unusable as vector software. How does this program have an editors choice award?
Grid glitch and unintuitive Interface 1/5
This interface needs some serious work. When I pull out the menu by tapping on a tool to select it, you’d think that it would return me to the working space when I tap onto the art board but it doesn’t. I have to slide the toolbar in and out manually.
Another problem and this must be a glitch from the latest update but the canvas freezes up when I turn on the grid and select “show grid.” When the grid is on, it doesn’t allow me to select any of the objects on the canvas.
$19.99 + tax is what I paid for this app.
Wonderful program except won’t work 1/5
This program is so good. User friendly. I was going to get rid of adobe. And then it crashed. And crashes every time I open it. All of my work gone.
$21.54 instead of $19.99 1/5
I have no idea how come this app took $1.55 more?
My transaction showed $21.54 instead of $19.99 when I pay this app. Will you return my $1.55 back to my wellsfargo bank account? I am sure it marked $19.99 before I paid it.
Yo man I like this app but... 4/5
there’s a glitch with some of the pens where it shows the texture of that brush randomly when you didn’t even use your pencil.
It’d be great if you guys could fix that glitch.
It’d also be great if you could add a feature where you could flip the entire canvas (and not just the selected area) horizontally or vertically.
Not intuitive at all and missing basic features 1/5
Be warned that this company offers no technical support and their documentation is filled with misinformation. There isn’t even an erase tool for pixels. Photoshop is way superior.
Wonderful App 5/5
Adobe has just made their products not affordable for everyone. For the price, this is a stellar app and photoshop replacement for me. I needed something that I could use to make and edit labels. My favorite IPad app EVER!
When you guys add rtl ???? 4/5
Please I need rtl so bad
This app is great but needs rtl
How to Bent text? 4/5
How to Bent text like a Netflix logo?
Could not set an architectural scale 3/5
I did not find any easy method to set the drawing to a scale. Drawing architectural designs requires large measurements in terms of feet, to be drawn to scale and then printed in terms of inches. It doesn’t usually work to draw at full scale and attempt to manually resize everything all at once to go to print. Maybe there is an option I could not find that does this. But I could not find it.
Another software intuitively uses the scale for this purpose. The other software also calculates square footage, and offers automatic dimension labeling, among other options. I cannot yet use Affinity for scale drawings that require professionally printed plans, such as: architectural plans, interior design, landscape design, industrial design, engineering... etc.
Really great app 3/5
I really want to give it 5 stars, it is so incredibly intuitive, and its photoshop and illustrator's love child as far as features. The purchasable brushpacks are also something I have loved. I have an Ipad pro, and I know that the app is updated, but the reason it only gets 3 stars is because it freezes on me constantly, and doesn't save my work even when I tell it to. I thought it was to do with the number of layers but then watching the more advanced tutorials, they have way more layers than me. Often, if I exit out of my current project, when I'm back on the home screen my project will get stuck on a spinning disk and I have to restart the program, which results in losing all of the progress I made, regardless if I saved it while I was working on it or not. This has been very frustrating, because sometimes I'm losing 7 or 8 hours of work.
I love it. I hate it. Now Consumes 100% of free storage on iPad (for no reason) 2/5
Hi - I love Affinity Designer. I own it for both the iPad and the desktop. But it’s got a horribly flaw. The base app is small, but it seems to have a memory leakage problem; over time it will grow until it consumes 100% of the free space on the iPad, even with very little use. When I had 100GB free on the device, it grew to be 100GB. I uninstalled and reinstalled, and it returned the storage. But that deletes all the brush pre-sets, and is a huge pain. Then it filled up again. This has been happening for a year. I see people discussing it all over your forums since early 2018; with work arounds about logging into your iPad from your PC to delete the cache file. You’re responsive in the threads (thank you) but it’s super weird to me that this has been going on more than a year and no fix? No “clear cache” option in the app?
At the moment, I use it until it fills up the iPad, and then I try to figure out how delete it and go through a day of trying to get brushes and settings the way I like. I can’t keep using an app that makes the rest of the iPad unusable over time.
Is there any plans to fix this issue? It’s such an amazing program otherwise.
UPDATE: I tried saving and closing all the files I had open. Good news, it cleared up all but 1.9 GB. Bad news. The file that was saved was corrupted. It now says that file that I just saved moments ago is zero k, and an unsupported file time. 1 week worth of work is now gone. :(
Hard to learn, but worthwhile 5/5
This program is not easy to learn. It has frustrated me often. However, working at it, I keep finding depth to it. Unfortunately, many tutorials are for the desktop version, but searching through the iPad app, I eventually find the same functions available, though somewhat hidden in the attempt to compact the user interface for the iPad screen.
Still, you can do things in here that can’t be done in other vector programs, whether desktop or iPad. So, five stars.
No support for Arabic 1/5
No support for Arabic language, and RTL
Super impressed 5/5
I’m a long time AI user, since version 1-something. I’ve used adobe’s version of iOS illustrator apps, and they were ok at best. I used AI on a surface pro, and it sucked. Then I sold the surface and bought an iPad Pro and a pencil, I’ve purchased two apps for it and affinity designer is the 2nd one. It is amazing is far,the interface and the tutorials and the attention to detail, all for $20! I’m still learning its ways, and I’ve yet to use it fir a real job, but this is fantastic.
Perfect, but you still need to fix one glitch. 5/5
There is a serious problem in the text edit menu under paragraph
This app is great but need to fix Bleed bug 3/5
So I found an issue when exporting a PDF and clicking include bleed the bleed is not included. I perform the same steps on my Mac and the bleed is included. I hope this will be resolved soon as this causes issues with how I do my work.
Love the app but it crashes 3/5
It’s crashing when I’m trying to export and save a file
Doesn't actually work on ipad mini 4. I'm out $20. 1/5
The app store listing says it works on this ipad. I was allowed to purchase the app and install it on my iPad mini 4. When I ran it, I got a message saying that actually, my device is not supported, and I should ask apple store my money back. Did that immediately, including both my receipt and my screen shots of the app store and the in app message. According to Apple, my purchase is not eligible for a refund. Don't fall for it!
TAKE MY MONEY! 5/5
I'm must sitting here, eating 🍿, viewing the tutorials on your website about this beautifully crafted masterpiece, while salivating over all of its incredible features...
Thank you for all your hard work, dedication, and innovation!
NOW TAKE MY MONEY!! 😁🙌 💵💵💵💵💵
I bought this thinking like all drawing apps I’d be able to draw a mandala and I can’t even create a straight line. I regret buying this.
Text problem 4/5
Its text has problem in right to left languages such as Arabic or Persian. In these languages the graphemes in the words are clinging together, but here, the graphemes are separated and they can’t create a word.
Great app, period. 5/5
6/7/19 update: well done!! Amazing. Thank you for your work...it makes mine much more enjoyable!!
Sometime before 6/7: I am an Affinity fan. I have designer and photo on my desktop and will get publisher when it releases. But both iPad apps REALLY need updating. Designer has gotten increasingly buggy over time; it crashes frequently and is incredibly slow on my new iPad pro. I want this to work because I KNOW how powerful it can be...but I just can't rationalize giving more than one star to an app that fails to save or export. I dislike leaving a negative review for a company I otherwise really appreciate, but I hate losing hours of work.
Love it 5/5
By The earth and the moon
I absolutely love this app, it’s completely changed the way I work in vector. The pencil tool and it’s infinite adjustments is absolutely incredible. I’ve used it to ink a few different projects now and it seriously blows Illustrator out of the water in this regard.
The one really annoying thing is that locked layers come unlocked all the time! It’s super tough to select something without it unlocking the layer underneath. Additionally, it’s incredibly difficult to select a specific line when you have other lines near it. Often times i have to lock a single line so I can select a different line that’s near it, pretty frustrating.
The desktop version leaves some things to be desired too but you can’t beat the price. I’ve also run into the same unlocking issue here, which makes workflow really difficult.
All in all it’s a solid app and I will continue to use it all the time. I don’t even use Procreate anymore and i only use my desktop Illustrator on occasion now. I know that down the road some issues like this will be addressed, the team is constantly working to improve it.
This app is great but... 3/5
There are some key things missing that would make this app an undeniable tool. Please in your very near future bring some sort of image trace feature! As it is crucial to my workflow. As well as being able to warp text would be great. Please update those small things and this would be the best app on iPad!
I really wanted to love this app. But I am very disappointed. It has some slick features but is overall clunky and crashes regularly.
To make it worse the online documentation/tutorials make it very confusing. They inconsistently mix up the mac version, iOS version and version 1.7. If you are learning this program for the first time, forget it.
Lastly the problem of putting a complicated app on the iPad was not solved. Doing even the simplest action requires many clicks. Often having to open and close the same action pallet multiple times.
I definitely would not recommend the app at this time.
Tour de force 5/5
By Norris Lurker
I'm still in awe at the ambition of bringing Affinity Designer to the iPad with all the features of the desktop version. There's nothing like it--except maybe Affinity Photo. It still takes me a while to find things, and some I'd never find without the help file. But once you've seen them they're logical enough; there just isn't a lot of room to spare in the UI. The more I use it the more I like it.
Best design app ever 5/5
I just replaced Adobe Illustrator and I’m not missing it. Thanks, this app is so good it’s in my iPad Pro’s dock!
Powerful and amazing app 5/5
Lots of features and great experience, great app.
Still severely broken 1/5
The side menu is still rounding everything to one decimal place after the period. This prevents accurate scaling of shapes, especially useful for use of the SVGs in CNC. Because of this rounding issue I cannot scale anything correctly and this my use case is completely destroyed. None of the SVGs are usable.
Multiple Artboard PDF Book? 5/5
I noticed that when I updated the iPad app to 1.7 version that I could no longer export artboards in a multiple page format. Now when I want to export my boards it clumps all my boards onto one page. This is not good as I really need that feature.
NEEDS A FIX URGENTLY 1/5
By Greggory Addison
Love this app I use it on a 64 gb iPad Pro works smooth and can create just about anything! THE ONLY PROBLEM IS FILE MANAGEMENT!!! I have no projects open and all my backups are saved to the cloud! Somehow this app is managing to eat up a whole gb of storage space and I have only 170mb worth of brushes installed! The only current fix to clear out that space is to delete and re download the app!? Meaning I have to reinstall all my brushes and settings again!? That needs to be fixed ASAP I pay for cloud storage so i can have an iPad that’s not chugging! Idk if it’s logging the history or what but the more you do with a file the more the “Documents & Data” section in the iPad storage goes up! What happens when I’m doing a bunch of work for clients or my own personal projects? I have to pick and choose the perfect time to back everything up so I can delete the app then reinstall ?! I guess it’s a small price to pay with no monthly subscription but who says I want to sacrifice anything at all!?
FIX THIS AND THIS IS A 5 STAR APP EASY! ITS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR 2 YEARS NOW AND IT NEEDS TO BE NIPPED IN THE BUTT!
Arrow not changing 4/5
Seem to change the tips of the arrow. It only points both directions. Attempting to change one end to none (or anything other) results in it reverting back to arrow.
Needed Features. (1) Add iOS interface so I can export a PDF directly from Safari 3/5
(2) Help, it converted my entire PDF file with four different pages to a single page PDF file on export. Please add more features so that each page of the PDF file will be converted to its own 8.5 x 11 artboard.
Fix the pages-by-page feature of the app and I will gladly give you five stars. I bought this for precision editing of my court briefs and it does not handle PDF documents in a page-by-page manner.
Why oh Why. 2/5
By Andy from TN
So I suppose I should have known better than to update to a point zero release. App is broken for me, apple pencil comes and goes, sometimes requiring several taps, can’t select multiple nodes on different paths with one finger as per usual. Was this even tested to draw vectors with?
Not for precision work 3/5
I may be asking too much of an iPad app. Although Designer feels like a great vector art / drawing program, for designing with precision dimensions it falls sort. I need to generate precise drawings that can be printed for pattern making.
There doesn’t appear to be any way to draw a vertical or horizontal line without multiple steps.
No vector pattern brushes, or the ability to distribute items on a path are also key features that are missing.
All of this works pretty well in Adobe Illustrator.
Great Unusable App - Still Broken 1/5
Update: I'm lowering my rating from two to one star because they released 1.7 and they didn't fix the pen artifacts. Designer is still unusable for professional work.
Wow, Designer is an Adobe killer on iPad- but it's unusable in its current state!! Painting with the Apple pencil is so buggy that you literally have to go back and manually edit EVERY SINGLE STROKE in order to remove unsightly artefacts. The tool is just broken, and according to the forums, has been for quite some time. This seriously calls in to question the developers ability to support the app, which in turn makes me nervous about committing to it as a professional tool at this point in time. Here's hoping this gets fixed ASAP.
No love for ipadpro 4/5
New: Following recent update, I’ve upped my rating to 4 star. Many improvements make precision work much faster, however there is still some clumsiness with the zoom/node mode line selection. It will be interesting 2c if next ipad os will finally get rid off annoying loupe popping up on screen with single finger pressure. Old: The biggest frustration I have, realizing the desktop version gets updates far more often than ipad pro version, desktop v. even gets frequent beta releases, where many significant bugs are discussed and squashed; but nothing for ipad, which appears to get the Cinderella treatment before the ball, receiving no love/updates in 6 months, so please Serif invite us to the desktop ball so we too can dance without all the bugs. Cheers

MY PRAYERS ANSWERED!!! 5/5
I’ve been waiting for a good vector app to come to the iPad and for me this one is it. It really supports all my basic needs, don’t expect adobe illustrator but it’s worth the money. You can always finish a project on your desktop. This is perfect to draft up ideas and even finish them. I’m in love.
