Apple Books app reviews

  • Now trash 1/5

    By Dottore Guido Grisi
I read foreign language texts and books with lots of foot notes. I understand these are special use cases relative to most readers but in previous iterations of the app both my needs have met - multiple dictionaries a hold-down click away and foot notes hyperlinked. Now the translate tool has moved to be more difficult of access (hold to get context menu, swipe over to second set of options, select translate). And somehow footnotes require three seconds of loading between each jump from top to bottom and back. The former is a design choice. It’s a shoddy and pointless change but at least is a ‘feature’. The latter is unoptimized programming. This app is a glorified text reader. If it loads for any reason other than opening a file, you’ve failed at its core purpose. Do you find it convenient to scroll read as you go, keeping your eye towards the top of the page? Well Apple has now decided that’s not a use scenario worth accounting for. They’ve instead given you sleek distracting little icons at the top of the page so you can more easily close out the book or, if you felt like staring at a dead screen for ten seconds and risked a footnote, can afterwards always have a quick link back to that same page. As in forever for the rest of that reading session there will be a shortcut arrow and page number at the top of the text. Because when you said ‘yes, take me there once’, they know you mean yes for all time. No continual consent required by Apple. Please provide an option to roll back your trash upgrade to any version from the past decade.
  • Bring back old ui and make this app less laggy 1/5

    By Cool_Box1
Bring back old UI and this app is buggy and laggy incredibly disappointing apple
  • Updates are ruining this app 1/5

    By anzeeak
The user friendliness of this app has gone down considerably since they’ve been rolling new updates out. Before you could tap on the screen to make page numbers, progress bar, font settings, etc. disappear/appear, now there are two permanent floating gray buttons to adjust settings or exit the book. They obscure writing, they could’ve easily been put in the margins, it was a choice made to put them in the way. If you hover your finger for half a second it immediately bookmarks the page, and you have to go through the settings to unbookmark it. Overall, I’m very unimpressed with the newer, “sleek” design they're going for, it’s ruining my enjoyment for sure having to fight the app to read peacefully.

  • Give us the old UI! 2/5

    By Danne*15
I used to love the books app. So much so that I gave up my kindle in favor of an iPad for reading because I appreciated the interface more and the ease of switching to my phone. This most recent iOS 16 update has really ruined the great things about the books app. The inability to tap and have only the words from the book on the screen is really frustrating and distracting. And there wasn’t a good introduction to the changes making it hard to navigate how to use the different features. I love the old interface because everything was a tap away and you could find it all on the top menu, now I’m constantly worried I’ll tap the wrong spot and end up in the wrong chapter. I’ve loved the books app for years but these changes have made it hard to use. I hope you bring these options back so I can really relax and enjoy reading like I used to.
  • Apple ruined the interface 1/5

    By jmuralles23
I’ve been using books over kindle because the interface was always better until now. They axed the page turn animation and there’s a big persistent X on the book you’re reading. I used to love this app and now moving to Kindle. This is what happens when you have idiots redesigning a legendary app
  • Bring back the page turn!!!! 1/5

    By pageturns!!!!
I was extremely dismayed to open iBooks after updating to ios16 and find the page turning graphic had been removed. It also seems harder to turn the page when I’m reading a book with just one hand. I HOPE that they give us back some of those excellent features the old app had because I’ll just find something that works better. Ugh.
  • Lost all my pdfs 1/5

    By Ditched by Apple
Opened my iBooks yesterday and all my pdfs disappeared. I do not save my iBooks in the cloud. There are no resources from Apple to restore my lost pdfs. Would like Apple to reach out to me and rectify this problem. My rating is minus 1 star
  • Buggy, boring, and lost potential 2/5

    By theodoubleto
I’ve been using Apple Books for years now. A little reading here and there along with some comics. The syncing cross devices is inconsistent and apps performance while loading search results and open books is painfully slow. The suggestions I have been getting these last couple of years are boring so I’ve found myself reading less in the app. My biggest complaint is the PDF reader in books. With Adobe’s “Liquid” mode being tested on image-less PDFs I figured Apple would attempt to compete or make their own version similar to the Reading Mode in Safari.
  • What a letdown 2/5

    By Zawad360
Wow so ios 16 just keeps getting worse and worse. The only thing stopping me from buying physical books was the wonderful iBooks and it’s realistic animations. But they had to take away the page turning skeuomorphism away on this update. Way to go Apple. Wish I could revert the update.
  • After a sync, I lost a few months, almost three books full of notes 1/5

Now I know why the rating of apple books is so low
  • How did you ruin this app in every way 1/5

    By heartisanite
This app was never perfect, but the new iOS 16 update absolutely wrecked it. It’s made it so that it’s nearly unusable. Why is there an x in the top right that never goes away and covers the words? Why can we no longer easily see the progress bar? Why is it so easily to accidentally bookmark a page? Also, the app randomly freezes and returns to the beginning of the book for whatever godforsaken reason now. This app is so bad that it actually hinders my ability to read books. Please fix it!!!! At the very least, put it back to how it was before!!!
  • Toolbar and “X” won’t go away 1/5

    By VikieCrusher
For the love of God and all things holy let me get rid of the “X” and toolbar menu. It’s so distracting while I’m trying to read.
  • Update 1/5

    By NatashaSmith516
This last update made the app so much worse. Put it back. The font type and size and page color changes from one page to the next. Constantly. There is so many unnecessary steps to change the page settings.
  • Awful 1/5

    By Playerplayerskankbitch
The fact I don’t have the option to change the font size makes me want my money back for the book I just bought.. it’s infuriating. I’ll buy my books on the kindle for now on.
  • new ios update messed this up 3/5

    By hopekooks
would really love if apple brought back the option to tap on the screen to bring the menu back instead of always keeping it there. the x and the menu toolbar ALWAYS being on the screen is really distracting. I really hope they fix this because I enjoy the books app the most and would hate having to find an alternative :(
  • After seeing iOS 16 changes I will not upgrade. 2/5

    By Gene flow
I love Apple Books. Love everything added to it, especially the reading goals. I can see the whole timeline of the books read! It’s awesome! But the new ui change, while reading, should be optional. PLEASE LET US USE THE OLD UI. I repeat. Please let us use the old ui, even if it needs to be turned on in the settings. I feel like the old ui was just user friendly/reader friendly. No X button in the top right corner. All of your options were at the top. You could see the book progress bar and scroll through more easily. And above all you could press the screen and make it just the words on the page. I am therefore going to stay on iOS 15. I’m sure apple will not listen to me or any others concerns about the app.
  • Page Animation 2/5

Please bring back the option for the page turn animation. Thanks in advance.

MAKE THE ‘DOUBLE TAP TO SET A BOOKMARK’ A TOGGLE! I keep accidentally double tapping when scrolling down and it’s irritating.

Please put at least 4 rows for the shelves view.
  • Used to be the best now it’s as bad as the rest 1/5

    By Toastix
This went from my favorite reading app to frustrating to use. The way pages turn now slows down my reading speed significantly. The new color options are great but the page turning is an unnatural and uncomfortable design decision.
  • Broken app waste of money buying books 1/5

    By alllllmightttttttt
App refuses to play my audio books that I purchased straight from it. Now I have no audio books and have wasted money buying them. I’m very upset as their is no way that if found to get my money back.
  • An ad on the last page ruins the book. 2/5

    By Lisandro75
I was enthralled, absolutely enthralled. Suddenly an ad popped up:” You’ve finished! Find out what other readers of [this book] bought.” I didn’t realize it was the end. Also it wasn’t the end; I hadn’t finished yet. I was snapped out of the suspension of disbelief, the ending of the book ruined by a stupid ad: one of the things I turn to books to avoid. This little ‘feature,’ no doubt designed to drive sales, has the opposite effect for me; it makes me want to run as far away from Apple’s book reader as possible, if they’re going to ruin the final page of every book like this. Makes me want to go buy a physical book. From Amazon maybe.
  • Cannot export highlights? 😭 2/5

    By jingai
How can I learn if I can’t export my highlights? Why was this removed? This is literally bad for the world. Still, side margins are too wide; test on an iPhone mini. Page numbers are meaningless… percentage complete yes. Much improved over the last version, but exporting highlights here and on Mac MUST come back! PLEASE!
  • Not easy to use 1/5

    By thebookwurm
Super glitchy. They added this annoying thing where if you touch the top, it goes back to the first page. SO annoying. I’d just flip the page and accidentally touch the top and boom, I lost my page. And, sometimes, it just randomly starts flipping through my pages…
  • Toolbar and x icon don’t disappear while reading 1/5

    By boomlust
That’s really a major issue for me. Very distracting. Please change this asap.
  • Refund for all books that i have in my inventory RIGHT NOW DR APPLE SAUCE 1/5

I want a refund to get my money back! And if not I’ll be really mad at y’all for not giving my money back!!!!!!
  • iOS 16 completely trashed this app 1/5

    By Disapp-ointing
After discovering it has only infinite scrolling, and the menus and interface are awkward and foreign, I went to the App Store and downloaded a half dozen readers so begin my search for a more acceptable app. Fortunately, my iPad still has iOS 15.7, so I can use it as my primary reading device until I find something for the iPhone and iOS 16. Apple so fumbled this one!
  • innovate please 2/5

    By BillPowerless
apple, audible is blowing you out of the water. instead of copying them when you finally get around to making this app work, please innovate—that’s what Apple does best and we need it.
  • Please stop “improving” 2/5

    By taco tyrent
Oh my gosh every update is like “let’s see what’s messed up this time.” Usually it’s minor things. With iOS15 the text to speech was messed up so that it only read one page. Now with iOS16 it’s now stuttering terribly and the feature to “scroll” pages at the bottom of the screen is gone. WHY? My gosh every time it’s such a headache. It’s the most used app on my device and I’d love it if it would work consistently. Please restore the feature for scrolling and, again, PLEASE fix the audio for text to speech. Blind people have a hard enough time using these devices as is why make it harder.
  • I hate the new update iOS 16 1/5

    By Haidi bkr
It was so much better I had no complains but now with the update it became unbearable I couldn’t read a single book since the update I used iBook mainly because of the paper animation but now I’ll have to use different apps I’m so disappointed
  • Update 1/5

    By penniless kpopper
the latest update to the app is dreadful- it book marks everything so easily. I cant even scroll while reading without it book marking something. I preferred the old format A-LOT better

What are you thinking about Apple! Bring back page curl
  • iOS 16 update 3/5

    By The Beach House
Why did you change iBooks? The main reason I preferred iBooks to Kindle was because it showed how many pages were left in a chapter. Now that feature is gone. Also, now have to open a menu to bookmark a page. Why make it more difficult? Please put those things back the way they were.
  • No longer working 1/5

    By M?lj
I have used Apple Books to purchase almost all of my eBooks for many years. I don’t know what the latest updates have done but I am now no longer able to open any book or PDF that I have in the app. It sounds from other reviews that the reading experience now is also worse, though not being able to open or add any new items to the app I myself haven’t experienced that. Please fix and change the app back to the wonderful e-reading experience it used to be.
  • Why is this App still broken 1/5

    By Robert Ranlett
Every time I try to use this app it crashes. An app I really liked since my first iPad is now unusable. Read the reviews, this App has been broken for a long time. Why isn't it fixed? Can I get a refund for all the books I purchased but now can not read? I don’t buy any books now from the Apple bookstore.
  • No way to determine audiobook length/time 1/5

    By cjhazard
Why is there no way to find out how long my audiobook is?! I can’t be the only one that needs this information… I’m addition, clicking “app support” takes you to a missing page on Apple’s website. This is pathetic, especially for a large software developer.

  • ios 16 :( 1/5

    By 001319
the new update that comes with ios 16 has had me distraught. it feels like almost everything has been downgraded, with the exception of the new feature that lets you adjust line spacing, etc. i 100% prefer the old page turning animation and i miss the slider at the bottom. 😞 but what irks me the most is that the X button and the settings at the bottom of the screen don’t go away at all. it completely breaks any immersion and is so distracting for me that i don’t think i can use this app anymore. it’s such a shame because i enjoyed reading on here the most out of any other app.

Started to crash when I was pressing on the screen during reading!
  • Delighter but made the experience better 3/5

    By Frlyock
With the most recent update the move away from the page turn animation that looked like turning a page in a book to sliding the page is sadly a poor experience. I realize this is a delighter but it really helps alleviate SOME of the feeling that I’m not reading a physical book.
  • My First Review 4/5

    By Amy Mary Ho
    Awesome!
  • No longer a good app 1/5

    By DebDAG
I used to love this app. Reading a book was pleasureable. It is no longer so since the last update. It is now hard to navigate through your book. Finding new books is also harder. Useless.
  • Astoundingly bad redesign: not focused on reading! 2/5

    By jthile
The iOS 16 redesign has introduced multiple UI elements which cannot be hidden and which cover the book you are reading. This is a fundamental mistake, all the more frustrating because it is so elementary. Your reading app covers the words, Apple! Additionally, the scrolling has been changed and now frequently results in accidental bookmarks.
  • Miss the old books app 1/5

    By HBXxxxxxxxx
I have no idea why to change the original books app to the worst!! Have you done testing with people who actually use the app??!!! Or some UX person (who never reads books ) decided to make these changes!! iBooks 3.2 was clean and easy and simple to use you could have added to it rather than what you have done. Shame…you need to do proper testing on real users of all age groups who are actual users…clearly you didn’t.
  • Whoever designed this is not a reader. 1/5

    By SimplyJamieLynn
New iOS 16 update has made this app completely unbearable.
