map store search is awful 2/5
By new bummed user
This app is good to use IF YOU CAN FIND the maps you want in their map store. Searched for Tonto National Forest Map and what came up a disorganized list of maps that were impossible to view in any real detail using preview. Finally just used a map developers name, MONTANAGPS, and the map I was looking for came up. Nowhere in the search instructions is this option spelled out. You need to really do a lot of improving of the map store search function and come up with a way to preview the maps in greater detail so we can see what we are buying.
Going to try GAIA. Read that it was way better.
More trails than I can hike 5/5
Great resource for getting out and away from it all. Love the ease of use and it makes finding your way super easy even when you don’t have cell signal. Perfect outdoor resource.
Great for me 5/5
Allows offline gps topos for my trail riding. Just have to know the area you’re going to to know which map quads need to be downloaded ahead of time.
Best maps ever 5/5
By Al m..
These maps are some of the best hunting tools I have ever used. Easy to use, even in a pinch. I normally use my vehicle GPS to get into a location, then transfer to my handheld while on the trail.
Cheap ripoff 1/5
The app is free. But maps available for download are copies paper maps. Some how they have them tied to GPS. But for an area you have to download several maps. In my example. The Rampart area is the same map with different resolutions. But only contains about half the area. The Rampart range goes way south of what is in the included maps. $11.95 of useless map. Maps range 80+mb X3. Not ready for primetime if you ask me.
Great app 5/5
I have been using this app for several years for UTV riding in colorado and Utah. Excellent product, especially if you use a tablet. Obviously the app is dependent on a quality map, but there are lots. Very happy that you can now load National Geographic maps. Excellent quality.
Maps not truly accessible on multiple devices 2/5
By walking joyce
My husband purchased a map of the Sierra National Forest on our iPad. It supposedly could be accessed on multiple devices. He logs in to his Avenza account on his iPhone and there’s no map in his download history. He says to restore previous purchases and nothing happens. I try the same route. No previous downloads. Then the kicker: restore previous purchases requires me to be in his iTunes account. So even if there was a previous purchase to restore (which there wasn’t in his iTunes account on his iPhone), I wouldn’t be able to access it. The app doesn’t work as advertised.
Terrible .. don’t waste your time 1/5
Tried to find the Beaverhead north visitor map as given to me on a flyer from a forest service kiosk. Cant find ...why don't you guys get your acts together?? Incompetence.
Great maps! 5/5
By Jim & Nelda
These maps work so well with a GPS or cell service if in range. I use mine with an external GPS with BT connection. Couldn’t live without!
I’m new to hiking, so having trail maps on my phone that track where I’m at live was so helpful!! We took the wrong turn once, but was able to quickly see our location and correct our mistake.
Hated setting it up but once there it was very helpful
Used to be a great free app 1/5

Now charging to use more than 3 maps!! Don't upgrade!!!!!!!! Like most good apps the developers get greedy and strip away content and take your $$ to give it back.
Latest version of Avenza deleted hundreds of maps already imported. 1/5
I’m currently hiking the Continental Divide Trail and had downloaded 423 individual geo codes PDFs from the CDTC into Avenza and they were all working fine. I also had installed all of Jonathan Ley’s map sets for the CDT into Avenza.
Yesterday I updated the app to the latest version. Now, over 300 of the imported maps are completely missing when I look for them in My Maps - a feature Avenza is claiming they just improved!
Additionally, the Jonathan Ley map sets do not appear anywhere in my maps. However, if I go to Avenza store to reinstall them the app claims they are already installed. If that is the case, they are not accessible to me in My Maps.
Now, I’m on the trail at a motel with bad wifi and spending hours reimporting maps and not getting critical rest that I need for my they hike. You can imagine how upsetting this is. To say the least.
Previously I have recommended the Avenza app to several hikers.
I do not recommend upgrading an app while on the trail EVER! If it works - do no change anything.
As far as the Avenza developer goes... releasing a version without testing the stability of its features - and critically speaking, its ability to retain purchases and imported maps - this is flabbergasting. It’s unacceptable. I should have known better than to update to a new version and I take partial blame for my current situation. Avenza has wasted my my money - and more importantly, valuable time and rest while actively on the trail.
Log cutter 5/5
It really helps when u can find all the draws and creeks and units to be able cut pretty awesome
Great App 4/5
The accuracy of the map is awesome as I am walking down trails with no cell service!
Good app 4/5
I like this app.
It's fantastic! 5/5
For free! Amazing! Thank you!
Love the app but it could be improved by making it easier to organize the maps into folders
Can’t use my maps!!!! 1/5
Bye Avenza. Can’t use the maps I already had and was using in the app. Suddenly stop working and was giving constant errors. I don’t mind paying for new maps, but not for ones I already had. From what I’m reading it’s something you’ve done intentionally. Time to move on to another app that doesn’t play games.
Something to improve 4/5

Need more referenced maps for dirt bikes
Legit AG 5/5
These maps are amazing.
Superior off-line mapping to all other apps 5/5
Planning a 4 day dirt road adventure in the Sierra Mountains National Forest. I first made routes, to be used off line, with apps like REVER and RIDEwithGPS, which all use Google based maps. I thought I’d done a great job, until I cross referenced my routes on Avenza, which uses a jpeg of the particular map you download, in my case a Nat. Forest map. I realized my route went through many closed trail gates!, so it was worthless. I created a a new route on Avenza avoiding closed gates. This app is essential for back country exploration.
What a map app should be 5/5
This app has it all. All the trails, forests, and off-road info I need for a successful trip. Some maps are a bit expensive but they’re worth the investment. Do yourself a favor and stop looking for the perfect map app because you’ve found it.
Subscription too expensive 3/5
Too expensive for the yearly subscription to add maps not purchased at Avenza store.
A useful map utility 5/5

Best I've found so far displaying USGS maps.
Really amazing product 5/5
This is great for many applications, from ground truthing to SAR
5 stars 5/5
Easy to use easy to share data
Solid App Support 4/5
I may have some issues with how Avenza handled the custom maps transition with limiting how many you could have without a pricy subscription. That is a marketing decision, and there are other factors that can be important to consider.
Based on my experiences in interacting with their support team, I have found that Avenza has a solid support team and development team behind them.
Case in point, iOS 11.3 came out and I discovered shortly after updating, that I could not create placemarks on a map. The app crashed when creating a placemark. This was a real issue for me, as I do this often when planning hikes for parking and such.
I reached out to Avenza via their support site and was quickly informed that the the company was aware of the issue and working on a fix. And, they were. Within a day the update was available and the issue that I experienced has been corrected.
To me this speaks a lot for a company in how they interact with their customers.
Extremely useful, very responsive 5/5
I spend a lot of time on National Forest lands, so this app is extremely useful with the PDFs provided as well as georeferenced maps imported via ArcGIS. I was also very impressed with how quickly the developer responded to crash issues brought about by the newest IOS update (11.3): they basically had it debugged in a day.
Keep up the great work!
Great Capabilities but hard to find maps 4/5
I have to search for maps through the website because it is near to impossible to find what I want through the app. However, I love the capabilities of this little thing. Being able to place mark and open up points within google map (or vice versa). Also I LOVE the fact that it operates like a GPS when in the map area. You can follow your little blue dot while traveling through the forest. And it’s scary accurate. Loving this so far! Can’t wait to place mark all the beautiful spots in AZ that I explore.
I love hiking and this app makes it so much easier!!! Love the app, keep up the good work, and thank you for creating it!
Never lost again. 5/5
It is so amazing that I can pinpoint myself pin pictures on the trail for future use. Never want to be without my Avenza!
Best on the Trail 5/5
Been using the app for years all over the world. Used on the Paiute Trail in Utah to do the entire 300 mile loop on our ATVs.
OHV Maps Made Easy 5/5
So easy to download and save maps for offline use.
My favorite mobile GIS app 5/5
Don’t leave home without it.

I like the concept and how well and easy the system is to use, but the topo maps that I purchased are lacking in clarity. It hard to see the details I want.
Avenza is Exceptional! 5/5
I have been so pleased with the capability of importing a georeferenced pdf into Avenza! I am now able to customize a map and follow myself out in the “real world!” ~Brian (Lebanon, OR)
Store needs work 4/5
A good way to organize your specialized GPS maps, I wish the store was easier to navigate
Great app for remote locations 5/5
Sure you can use Google maps when you have cell service. This app uses your GPS chip set that is available anywhere. Many maps available.
Good product 5/5
By SpeeDz MoDz
We started using this system in the fire service to navigate on maps without GPS
I have since used it for hunting and marking items while on hikes
They could improve the method for finding maps as it can be difficult to navigate
Over all a fabulous tool
Love it 5/5
Got this to import my custom GEOrefrenced PDFs.....works great!
Great resource 4/5
We use this for planning group backpack trips. If you download map you can follow progress on the map as you go along. Who will download the map onto an iPad in the boys can all take a look at where we are in relation to where we’re going. It’s a big morale booster. And much easier to see then a GPS screen
Good App 5/5
Meets my needs for mvums
Forest Service OHV Trail Maps for the 21st century 4/5
Great way to explore the forest and know if the trails you are on are legal. Needs to have a better way to locate the current MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map) for a given area but is way better than the paper map. Would also like the option to layer MVUM over a topo or have them tiled as a single layer.
Do not update! 1/5
By Blue Zork
Features have been removed from the free version: only three of your own maps can be loaded without paying for a subscription -- not a one time purchase, a SUBSCRIPTION to use your OWN maps! Avoid!
Not perfect but getting better - especially with addition of shapefiles.
Great outdoor tool. 4/5
One the whole, I really like this app. We ride SxS’s whenever we get a chance. The interactive map is a big help.
Only thing is that when searching for maps to download, sometimes you need to know the exact name of the map to find it in the store.
Do your research on particular maps before searching and you’ll be fine.
Cool app 4/5
Only complaint is that there aren’t enough proper maps out there to use with. I’ll keep working it though!
Love this App! 5/5
By Susanna Girolamo
Love using the downloadable topographic maps for my backcountry adventures. I use the extra settings to pin my way in and out and it has helped a lot finding my way out again. Great maps also usable on airplane mode and it doesn’t drain your battery.
Thanks so much for having these tools available!
