Ecosia App

Ecosia is the tech company that puts the ability to do good into the hands of internet users. When you use Ecosia to browse the web, your searches are helping to plant trees and reverse the effects of climate change. *** How it works Like other search engines, Ecosia makes money from search ads. The big difference is, Ecosia uses its profits to plant trees, where nature and people need them most. The Ecosia community is planting millions of trees every month across the world’s most threatened biodiversity hotspots, simply by searching the web. The more people that use Ecosia, the more trees we can plant, it’s that easy! So what are you waiting for? ***Privacy, not just promises We're interested in trees, not your data: we don’t save your searches, we don’t track the websites you visit, we don’t sell your data to advertisers, and your searches are always SSL-encrypted. ***CO2 positive CO2 neutral is not enough. Thanks to our own solar plant powering our servers on 100% renewable energy, and the Ecosia forests around the world, each of your searches removes around 1 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere. ***Radical transparency Trust has to be earned. That’s why we publish our monthly financial reports and tree-planting receipts on our website. We also signed a legal contract that requires us to stay true to our not-for-profit cause, forever. Download the Ecosia app today. The world will be better for it. *** …or learn more: Find out more about our tree-planting projects, team, and mission on our website: ***Follow us on our journey to 1 billion trees: The Ecosia blog: Facebook: Instagram: YouTube: Twitter: *** What others are saying: “By making Ecosia your search engine you can actually help the environment one search at a time.” – The Guardian "A company, whose whole business model is built around planting trees. To fulfill its goal, the company’s customers don’t need to do anything more than leisurely browse the web at their convenience." – Forbes “If that's not incredible fundraising progress by a single company, we're not sure what is." – Treehugger

Ecosia app reviews

  • Poor Searches and Sharing 3/5

    By Kickingplants
I wanted to like this app but after having it for well over 6 months I find I don’t even use it anymore and just deleted it. Unfortunately the search is bad and results are usually pretty far off. For example before deleting I just tried to search for “286000 INR to USD” which in any other search will instantly convert, but full first page of Ecosia is completely irrelevant such as the top hit which is a site to convert INR to SOS. It’ll be easier for me to use Brave and then convert my monthly BAT earned from advertisers into donations for tree planting than use this whack search engine. And my more minor beef with the app is the poor sharing ability. If I ever try and send a quick link from app to somebody it just comes across as an ad for Ecosia basically. If I’m trying to send a url that all I want to send, I shouldn’t have to manually copy and paste myself from address bar. The send to messages should work same as every other app.
  • Great, but pleeease fix the new update 5/5

    By KuchiPatchii
This is my main browser I use so it’s pretty good, however the new update has a major bug that doesn’t let you go back to the previous page[s]. For now I have to use Safari since I use the feature a lot but pleeeease fix this bug and it’ll go back to being my main.
  • Browser needs some Improvement 4/5

    By Sam Atkings
I love the idea of this app! It’s mission is great and I loved supporting it for a year. However, it still needs improvement. It’s great for a basic browser, but it’s not the best.

  • Great App. 5/5

    By Khaenin
Not quite as good as Google, but better than most browsers. The cause is just too good to ignore. After using it for 1 month I’ve contributed 10 trees worth of searches. Amazing.
  • Works better then google 5/5

    By smileyface98765431
Love everything Ecosia does but I wish when I hit the share button it allowed me to share it to different social media platform like Instagram or twitter rather then Facebook

This is a company I can behind on. Good search results. Any chance we could get t a dark mode?
  • LOVE! 5/5

    By trumpsucks12342020
I love this app! My only complaint is that for some reason there is a little black line on the left side of the icon on my home screen. I am still rating 5 stars because I love the app and love the idea of planting trees, but I wanted to let someone know about the problem with the icon display.
  • Dark Mode ( Please? ) 5/5

    By Gaksuki
So I love the app and everything about it! Such a bright idea honestly. But all of my phone is in dark mode pretty much.. So if you guys made that a thing I would be sooooooo happy! If there was a higher star rating I would rate it higher! Thanks for being aWeSoMe!!!

Ecosia as a search engine.. INCREDIBLE!! Ecosia as an app is absolute garbage.. Saving and managing favorites has been a nightmare, as you can’t change anything once you’ve added it. Don’t like the position, wanna change the name? TOUGH! This update WHIPED all of my favorites and saved tabs.. I can see history, metadata, open pages, etc.. but the favorites?! That wasn’t an update, you scrubbed my phone of the last version and made me download it again.. (essentially) The update looks okay so far, the colours ended up being a nice little touch.. y’all better keep planting those trees! Y’all have blown up in the last year and that overhead cost and corporate culture better stay looowwwww!! Keep it up (but maybe hire some better software developers!)
  • deleted all my tabs 1/5

    By Funnybunny68393763
DONT RELY ON THIS!! im a person that likes to have multiple tabs open so i could go back to it later. i just updated it and now all the tabs ive saved are gone. the ones ive put in my favorites were deleted as well. this server is nice and ill use it just to save the earth a little at a time, but remove the option where it deletes everything. im not going to be saving anything on this server anymore and will use safari or chrome to save anything i think i would need in the future.

    really amazing and useful❤️👌🏻
  • Nice, but has some bugs 3/5

    By Lemon taffy
They need to fix the bugs people are reporting in their reviews. Also a “find” feature that scans the page for words would be great. Thank you!
  • So far so good! And help plant trees! 5/5

    By Redznowhite
I’ve been using this app to do my online research, and I really like it, I find what I need with no problem. It’s not as smooth as safari or maybe I’m just used to it, but it does what I need while protecting my privacy and not tracking me unlike others we’ve been conditioned to use. I also like that using the app supports planting trees!
  • Loved it 5/5

    By camzzz42
I loved Ecoisa because all of us search a lot of things right. Why not help our Earth while we’re at it!!!😁🌳
  • Not an Eco friendly 1/5

    By BabyMogulApple
No. It’s actually quite worse from what independent research suggests. For one, it uses Bing as it’s back end, which means they are wasting significant resources with each search. Microsoft still doesn’t use 100% renewable energy, they’re at 40% and lower in some places around the world. Google, however, is entirely run on renewables. And remember, they don’t get paid when you search, they get paid when they get you distracted with what you didn’t realize was an advertisement, so plenty of the people who use the engine but are smart enough to figure out the ads burn energy without planting anything. And if you aren’t, it is designed to take you to sites you didn’t want to go to. It’s the only way they make money. But beyond that: This is a company openly misleading people about their goals and intentions. For example, they advertise that they planted enough trees to swallow up one point five million tons of CO2, which sounds big until you realize that considering that is less that half of a tenth of a percent of the human OVERAGE in terms of where we need to be to save the planet, and considering this is them after a decade of trying … this isn’t actually helping anything. The fact that they use BING instead of Google, which means they are using non-renewable sources to power their searches and super inefficient power usage in general, is something they could change easily if they were willing to but comes down to a “small” company being unable to put profit aside over the planet. Which is … fine I guess, but when you build a company on THIS IS THE ECO ANSWER it reads as a giant scam when you openly ignore the environmental impact of what you offer to make more money. Especially when they have talked in the past about simply paying their way to undo carbon damage they’ve done, which isn’t how anything works. Eco is a great buzzword because our planet is essentially a match head and if we don’t want it to strike we need to immediately get the water out. We’re about to suffer permanent, tragic consequences and everyone wants to feel like they can make a few small changes to stop that. Anyone selling you a search engine that saves the planet by planting a small fraction of trees based on how many people click the ads they inject into searches (they don’t get paid per search, only when they lead you astray during their searching, think about that as well) probably has a bridge in brooklyn they’d like to sell you too. Starbucks wants to distract from the fact that they are a massive producer of the world’s waste by paying PR firms to tell you it’s your fault for using straws. Car manufacturers sell hybrids making at most 40 a gallon as “hyper efficient” because the old ways of making 60 MPG didn’t net enough of a return for them in the long run. And I’m sure tech companies like Microsoft want to be able to tell you their ridiculous power consumption levels would go down if only you’d use this one specific search engine instead of the thing they told you to do yesterday, despite it being the same thing, because they know how well the branding will trick us into thinking we’re at fault. Do you want to help the environment? Don’t think about the search engine. Use google to find places near you to do ecological volunteer work. Reduce community power usage in general by fighting for renewable sources of energy for everything that you have access to, from your local government to the federal level. Donate directly to WWF or to the EDF or to someone who can use resources to fight. Don’t buy that more consumption done slightly differently will fix our problems of over consumption. You cannot consume your way out of over consumption.
  • Love it 5/5

    By Kimcardashin
I love this search engine and what it does. This is my go to for 95% of my searches for mobile, with only a few things go to Safari instead. It’s great, it’s quick, it allows me to help the planet and the communities where the trees are planted.
  • I really wanted to like this 2/5

    By Grim_Aristea
The concept of Ecosia is extraordinary: helping plant trees without even changing my lifestyle. Every search contributes. However, it was not without its problems. First, the easiest problem to overcome is that the results aren’t all the same as if I used safari or google chrome. I noticed that ecosia orders search results differently. Which isn’t a problem, but when doing research (I’m a grad student so 90% of my time on the Internet is research) I have to look even harder than usual to find what I’m looking for. And then there’s the error message. “The trees are silent.” 1/3 clicks will give you this message. It is SO frustrating to click a link and the entire thing crashes. You need to either refresh a lot or relaunch the app, because turning back just leads to the same result. And lastly, the most annoying thing: don’t bother searching for pictures. EVERY TIME you click a picture on the images tool, it WILL NOT load. The result is a black image. You need to either reload the page 10 times or actually open the image on a separate page. And that won’t even work 50% of the time. Overall I’m so disappointed and dissatisfied with this search engine, and end up using safari 80% of the time anyways. The ONLY reason I’m giving it 2/5 instead of a (much deserved) lower score is because of its good intentions in saving the environment. TL;DR: the frustration and lack of proper function in this search engine makes it too annoying to use
  • Needs a dark mode 4/5

    By mightyteegar
Love the app so far. Fast, clean and simple to use. However, can’t give 5 stars without either a built-in dark mode or a way to honor the iOS dark mode setting. Dark mode is much easier on my eyes and nearly all my other apps feature it.
  • I really wish I could like it more 3/5

    By Fhefhyuchvv
I use ecosia on my laptop and it works well, not as well as google but they’re a multinational corporation with a lot more money for development so I’ll excuse it. This app though... is bad. Functioning most the time, but bad. About 1/4 the articles I click on don’t load fully and I have to switch to safari to use them (and since safari works I know it’s not my connection that’s the problem). If I try to use the “image” tab, about 1/3 the time it won’t scroll and the app will freeze if I click on an image. I really do appreciate the work that ecosia is doing in conservation, but i’m gonna delete the app, or maybe only use it to click on ads periodically so that i can help plant trees
  • Bing 2/5

Really bing is the only issue. It is super inaccurate. I know there aren’t any easy options out there, but that is why I am not going to use this full time.

This is exciting and I’m wondering if there’s a way to make it my default search engine on safari rather than bing, yahoo, google, or duck duck go
  • Needs SEARCH built in to app 👀 🔍 4/5

Good app but it absolutely needs a SEARCH function of the website page built into the app. Please add!
  • Great 5/5

    By willaG_2,1
This search engine works great and I’m glad it’s helping the earth too!
  • One of the BEST search engines!!! NOT A VIRUS!!!!! 5/5

    By Yellow_Penguin
I have been using Ecosia for a while now, and—well NOTHING’S WRONG WITH MY iPAD! There are quite a lot of reviews that say “Ecosia is a virus!!!” but it’s not. Nothing is happening to me, and I love to plant trees with this interesting search engine! Ecosia is definitely the best search engine that I am using! Although there are a few glitches, none of them really bother me a lot. This is a very clean app, and you are able to see how many searches you have made. I don’t think you are able to log in on the app yet, but the Ecosia team is probably working on it. Overall, 5/5 stars! If you are wondering if you want to get it or not, do yourself a favor and get it. Hooray for Ecosia!! 🥳

  • Great Concept, Bad Execution 3/5

I love the concept of the app, I love supporting my plant but after a couple days the search is just not what I want it feels glitchy and unrefined
  • amazing!! 5/5

i loveeeee this app! its just like any other searching app like safari or firefox but helps plant trees!
  • Review 4/5

    By Chores - FAN
Ecosia it is a great search engine and almost the exact same as any other search engine. But one problem I did come across was they don’t have the shopping option to click on like Google and DuckDuckGo and many other search engines do. Overall Ecosia is a great search engine.
  • Awesome cause 5/5

    By RamaRajuV
This app is an amazing cause to the works but it could be a little better I wish there weren’t so many links to find an answer about something. It would be great to just have direct answers then follow up with links
  • Great concept! Not great execution 3/5

I love the idea of this app! Its just hard to use
  • Great 5/5

    By jordan_629
I only wish that it could be set as my default browser on my phone but other than that it’s great
  • Awful App 2/5

    By AllenDiego
I love the premise, and I have been willing to tolerate the search engine’s web browsing functions in an effort to support their cause. After a week websites crashing on a daily basis, links unable to load, the back arrow not working, and many other glitches, I’m moving this browser to the back of my phone . I’ll try it periodically, when I see updates released. I really do hope they can make a fully operable and stable search engine as browser. Please create a dark theme for the app version!
  • Such a great search engine 5/5

    By Taoleftexo
I love using this knowing I’m supporting a company that actually cares about the environment. My only thing I’d add is maybe a dark mode or incognito mode. I just like my search engine to be a little darker.
  • We want dark mode 4/5

    By Strawberryyy98
    Please a dark mode
  • Good search engine, but keeps opening new tabs 5/5

    By cheezbog
I like Ecosia, but one issue I have with it is that it keeps pushing new tabs on me. When I go to delete tabs, it gives me a new one. When I open the app, it’s automatically on new tab. This came from the recent updates. It used to have this problem and then it didn’t for a while, which I liked, but it’s back again. I get that it’s convenient sometimes but I want to open tabs on my terms. I’d suggest a toggle for auto-opening new tabs so people can choose what they prefer.
  • Best. App. Ever. 5/5

    By ErinArielJulia
Escocia is probably my favorite app ever. it works perfectly, saves everything, looks super cool, and is everything you’re looking for in a search engine. I prefer it over Safari and Google. The set up is flawless and I love this app. Highly recommend it. (Not to mention it literally plants trees)
  • Really great 5/5

    By PandaGamerz
I love this app! No need for Google anymore!
  • Love this 5/5

    By Liv stout
This took me a little bit to get used to it with the different format, but I get the same results as I would using any other search engine and haven’t had any issues as of now. I also love knowing that my browsing the internet is actually helping the earth!
  • I love Ecosia! 5/5

    By hazel glasssong
I’m really happy this is available and encouraged to see companies taking a creative approach to climate change solutions. As someone fed up with Google and interested in finding local businesses to support, I’m really happy my searches on Ecosia are leading me to to sources I am actually looking for versus drudging me through a bunch of Amazon and eBay sources first.
  • Does not show directory path in the address bar. 4/5

    By Aubrey3333333333333
I was researching for a research paper and copied almost 15 links using Ecosia and pasted them into a document. I later saw the directory paths in the copied URLS were not present, therefore not bringing me to the exact page I copied, but the general website. That cannot be.
  • an app for everyone 5/5

    By f*ck u bitchass bitmoji
the best way to combat global warming by not really doing that much
  • Love the concept 2/5

    By Eco Alien
I love the concept but there’s still so many bugs. I have to have safari still in order to do a lot of stuff.
  • Missing two important features 3/5

    By Bioman222
The app does the job fine for the most part, but there are two things I find important: 1. Let me copy the URL from the address bar, or at the very least give me a share sheet button in UI. I don’t want to have to poke around in the menu to find the button, hit that, then share it. Just let me copy or grab it straight from the address bar. 2. Dark mode. This was optional in 2018, recommended in 2019, and effectively mandatory in 2020. It seems like every app that isn’t snap chat has gotten with the program, so if you could follow suit that would make your app usable at night. Overall, alright app that does the job.
  • Amazing App 5/5

    By Rishaan Reader #2
I’ve only used Ecosia for 3 days but already it’s amazing. You can search anything and even go to google but still contribute to planting trees. The one minor issue is that it keeps saying you need 45 searches to plant a tree and I have searched 46 times but it doesn’t say something like “You’ve planted a tree!” Or tell me some message that I have planted a tree. That is a very minor issue so developers great app!, few minor problems but overall 5 out of 5. Everyone should use this app!
