ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Magazine app reviews

  • This App is Useless 1/5

    By KMRAppleTunes
No New issues are available!!!!!! I had really enjoyed reading EW on my iPad but about a month ago it stopped making issues available even though I have renewed through iTunes AND renewed through EW subscriptions. Contacting Customer service is next to impossible — when I got through by phone they said they don’t handle the digital and the digital e-mail took over a week to respond. When the digital did respond they ignored the actual problem and gave me a list of things I had already done several times— Force Quit, Re-install App, Re-sign in. All my previous issues are there but it does NOT show the current issue which arrived via snail mail almost a week ago. I want to read this magazine on my iPad but have now paid TWICE for a digital subscription which does not show up at all.
  • Paper issue available for a week now 1/5

    By Terry McB
Where is the digital version of the winter preview special?
  • Swipe up for reader view 1/5

Hey! Did you know you can swipe up for reader view? No? Ok, I’ll alert you to this fact on every freakin page. This app is amateur hour. Shocking that a company that needs to get as many eyeballs on their magazine developed such a hostile app and never updates it to improve.
  • Swipe up for reader view, please back it go away! 1/5

    By Sg1dhd
The app itself is a bit janky, but the worst thing is the “swipe up for reader view” prompt that shows up EVERY TIME YOU SWIPE TO A NEW PAGE.
  • They Don’t Even Care!! 1/5

    By Imasuperstr
I don’t think they read any of these reviews because it’s been a long time since I’ve used the app and it was horrible then, and I came back to see if it’s changed and it’s just awful still. All the pictures are distorted and blurry and not in high res. Worst mag app!!
  • Crap Ap 1/5

    By podgirlfromtheblacklagoon
This app won’t even load my subscription. Just shows a blank screen with the spinning wheel. I will be requesting a refund.
  • Doesn’t remember where I am 1/5

    By mwyner
Aside from all the other issues people have mentioned, my biggest beef with this app is that if I’m reading an issue, then come back to it a few days later, the app has reset essentially, so I have not only pick the issue again that I was reading, but try to remember where I left off. Before they switched to this awfully written app, the old one had no problems like that, and would immediately open to where I was.
  • Used to be a good app, what happened? 1/5

    By brilliantbluejay
Digital service has been consistently unavailable so you can’t log in to verify account, can’t even contact customer service to find out what to do to fix issue. I don’t even know how long I’ve been a subscriber and being able to read digitally is a big sell. This is very disappointing and should be embarrassing to the company.
  • Used to be ok. Now it’s awful 1/5

    By Mojosayshi
This app used the be ok for reading the magazine. Now it’s way too slow and doesn’t hold your place in the magazine. Every time you come back you have to page through and find your place. This seems like a bare minimum functionality and it no longer exists in this app. Horrible
  • A complete joke 1/5

    By Embarassed for EW
This app is a total disaster. I have an account, get magazines mailed to me every week, but can never get my subscription to work online. I am not even sure an intern is staffing the AppStore department at EW. Another sign that the mainstream magazine world will soon cease to exist. The app is an utter embarrassment for EW.
  • Worst Magazine App Ever! Such A Waste 1/5

    By GameSlayer!!!
None of the functions in the Setting work. If you need to restore your subscription purchases through iTunes - forget it. Wasted so much time trying to get my subscription restored/recovered by iTunes and via the App restore function or via the “contact us” option which basically after several tries with no resolution or even a reply acknowledgement -I gave up. Guess the next step is to just cancel this e-Magazine altogether!
  • Why do I always need to re-login? 1/5

    By Acheung1983
I’m constantly needing to re-login to download new issues. This is super annoying. It also doesn’t remember my login credentials. Get with the times, EW!
  • Soooo sloooooooooow 1/5

    By crushedbydwarf
I think this app runs on dial up. Pretty much need to tap everything three times before you get to see the spinning wheel for a few solid minutes. Now it won't even let me log in anymore
  • Going back to paper 1/5

    By jinx135
As many have pointed out, the new app is horrible. I used to love your app and even used it as an example of what a magazine app should be like. Now, it's unusable. No way to bookmark or return to where you left off. No more hyperlinks to view videos, trailers, purchase books etc. To delete an issue it's now multiple steps. Hate the distracting swipe up for reader view on every page. And I now often receive my paper copy before the digital is even available. I find myself reading the paper copy more and more often. Why did you ruin such a great app???
  • Horrible app 1/5

    By Holly Mc B
The app has you relog in, asks you to purchase, download, swipe up for reader mode, is fidgety, flakey, infuriating, and by the time I get the app to work, the mail carrier can pretty much deliver a paper copy through a foot of snow to my door. So, it’s a waste of time, makes me crazy, and makes me consider dropping my subscription and forsaking entertainment and moving to a cabin in the woods. With or without zombie redneck torture family.*****Additionally, I used to be able to access the online version on Fridays. Now the online version is not available until noon Saturday. The preview content is available. If I wanted to pay for full access I could, but as a subscriber, I have to wait. Horrible.
  • Why update it only to make it worse? 1/5

    By CarolinaCoaster
It’s a good thing there isn’t an option for zero or negative stars because that’s what the updated EW app deserves. I typically don’t write reviews but felt compelled to due to my frustration with the app. Gaining access to my paid product has become an ordeal. Instead of being able open the app and download the latest issues I have to constantly log in/subscribe and on one occasion was charged for a magazine even though I bought a two year subscription this past spring. I enjoy the EW Magazine very much and have been a long time subscriber but unless they fix this app I will not renew my subscription.
  • Swipe up for reader view 2/5

    By peppersprouts
Yeah I get it... I can swipe up for reader view. I don't need a pop up every time I swipe to a new page. Please make it stop! I just want to read it like a magazine
  • Tad disappointed 3/5

    By PookyG84
Just downloaded the app for my new device. So far I like it. But disappointed it doesn’t restore all my past issues. It doesn’t go further back then February 2014.
  • From bad worse 1/5

    By disgrub
This is possibly the worst app I’ve ever installed. It used to be a mediocre app—now it loses your subscription, and very poor navigation through the magazine.
  • No way to easily access individually purchased issues 1/5

    By goddessbj
The app will restore purchases, but there is no way to access just your purchased content without wading through week after week after week of non-purchased issues to try and find your content.
  • This App Is useless 1/5

    By rarely a critic
I renewed my EW membership thinking that I can use the digital version, but this app is a zero starts, it doesn’t work, very disappointed
  • If it ain't broke... 1/5

    By suprememouser
Worse app EVER. Won't load anymore. Loved the previous one. Might not renew after this.
  • Options 2/5

    By Dee8100
There are other issues I may like, than others, so you should give us the option to buy one issue at a time. Please give us that option.
  • Some Suggestions 3/5

    By Neil EW Reader
For iPad users, please remove the ‘Swipe up for Reader View’ reminder for all text heavy content or at least have it an option to turn off in ‘Settings’. EW needs to provide better high quality photos as you can clearly see that the ones currently used are grainy and pixelated, especially when zoomed in.
  • The New App is Bad 1/5

    By majortree
Like many other reviewers have pointed out, the upgraded app is terrible. I was a long time print subscriber and moved on to the digital version years ago. It was one of the few magazines I read regularly. Then, they create this new app that is atrocious. I didn’t even wait until my subscription ran out before I deleted the app. You’d think they would scrap the new version and return to the old app to retain current readers and draw us ex-readers back but, evidently, that’s not in the cards. Sad, I miss reading EW...
  • Don’t buy a digital subscription 1/5

    By HappyDadV2
I purchased a digital subscription that offered more magazine issues for a cheaper price. The only way to view digital subscriptions is the EW app and unfortunately not the website. I sign in to the app and it doesn’t allow me to view the current or past issues. Tried contacting EW to resolve the issue with no luck.
  • Latest version took several steps backwards 1/5

    By CBegley
Not sure why you would drop so many features with this new version. You can’t remove old issues that you have finished reading, so there is no way to free up the space on your iPad. You also can’t save your place in an issue when you are reading it and you have to jump out of the app midway through the issue. The next time you go into the app, it takes you back to the page or issues. You have to remember which issue you were reading, and then scroll back through it to find where you were. Please, oh please, make some updates soon. The app is almost unusable.
  • I’m Done 1/5

    By shaunlyon
Longtime subscriber (check my history, EW) who won’t be renewing this summer when my sub is due... because you ruined the experience of reading your magazine. The app is abysmal. Just awful. No thanks. I’m done.
  • Horrible "update" makes it virtually useless. 1/5

    By All4bway
I originally got this app years ago when working in Europe so I could keep up with my favorite magazine. In fact, it was a major factor in me finally buying an iPad at all. So it's infuriating that the new update has complete DESTROYED its usability. The new app is painfully slow and crashes constantly. It spends so much time trying to get online and be its own web browser that it completely fails as a digital magazine. The navigation is no longer intuitive or straightforward and. As impel thing like deleting an issue is a chore. That's if I get the issue to download and stay downloaded, as often once I'm offline the issues vanish. It's bad enough that If it is t fixed soon I'll probably cancel my subscription and go back to print. Or just a new entertainment magazine. All this to connect it to the website, which if I wanted to do. I'd use a browser. Be a magazine app for gods sake. So aggravating.
  • Thanks for nothing 1/5

    By Lokemper
I just wanted to thank you for this latest upgrade, which has made reading EW unnecessarily burdensome. Well done! In fact, I hate what this app has become I needed to come back and add to this review. I admit that years ago I did not like the e-version of EW, but I grew to really enjoy it. I enjoyed the interaction with the page the app provided. That is all gone now and all the app provides is a knock-off pdf version of the magazine. I so enjoyed the previous electronic version of EW that honestly kept renewing my subscription so I could read THAT version. The paper version just goes to waste. Unless something happens and we get the more fun, more enjoyable app version back, when renewal time comes around I’m out. There is nothing inherent to EW that I can’t get on the internet for free and more timely. 3/27 A new problem: The app won’t let me download any issues. Just a wonderful app.
  • Can’t access 1/5

    By phunlee
The new app won’t let me see my subscription. I’ve confirmed my username with support and they told me today to use the NEWSTAND APP to access EW. What?!? The Newstand app is no longer used by iOS. What’s going on??
  • Used to be great, not any more 1/5

    By Dr MD PhD
Agree with all the recent 1-star reviews. Can I leave zero stars? This used to be a great app which has steadily lost features, culminating in this update which has basically turned me from a dedicated 10+ year reader, who made time every week to read this cover to cover, to a user yet to read a new issue in 2018 because I’m still trying to get through the last 2017 issue! Among the many faults—doesn’t remember the last issue and page I was reading!! Terrible resolution on zoom. Annoying splash page with links to the website content that I could care less about! If I wanted to read the website, I wouldn’t buy the magazine. Which seems likely anyway—unless this improves, my subscription will lapse.
  • More bug fixes please!!!!!! 1/5

    By CLTmom
Every time I turn on my iPad, I have to RE download the magazines. Why can’t this be fixed? Ruins the app. It used to remember and store them until you erased them. Kills this for me.
  • Swipe up for reader view 1/5

    By BrodySF
This is obnoxious as hell and every time you touch the screen you block the picture or words. Too frustrating to try and see an entire page of content. I would understand for magazines like Vanity Fair that have long articles, but EW is a picture magazine. No one wants a reader view anyone, let alone a reminder on every.single.page. I’ll just go back to print if I have to. Beyond frustrating.
  • Needs a little work 3/5

    By Rufus Williams
If I see the pop up “swipe up for reader view” every time I turn the page I’ll go out of my mind. At least put in an option to disable these prompts, it interrupts my reading experience.
  • Horribly slow 1/5

    By Ogg1701
The latest version is even slower than the previous one.....horribly slow. Also is very clunky and not easy to navigate through.
  • The worst update EVER 1/5

    By Jroblesgil
I have been a subscriber for at least 6 years and now the last update always logs me out and it is an ABSOLUTE pain to try to download any issues. It doesn’t log you in most of the time, so you have to try so many times. No customer service on the app. Awful, plain awful and has been this bad for a while now.
  • What were they thinking? 1/5

    By KC94558
A couple of years ago this on line magazine was so user friendly, had links to music samples, movie clips, as well as most pages being alive by means of scrolling only a small part of the page, while you still had full view of the photos. Then last year they started cutting back on features. Now these last months of the new improved EW is garbage. Whose idea was it to make these changes. It's no longer fun to view this anymore. You need to fix this mess. Stop these crashes, remember where we left off, stop taking away the features. Bring it back to the quality and fun you made it 3 years ago!
  • Completely useless, Couldn't give it a zero 1/5

    By Poppa From Md
This app worked perfectly before the last update, now doesn't let me download any of the new issues, can't associate my account with my email, and requests to the developers for help went unanswered. Enough to make me just cancel my subscription.
  • Bad changes 1/5

    By Fairmont1955
Not sure what happened, but the app changes aren’t good. I have to log out every time there’s a new issue, otherwise it wants me to purchase the issue, plus the new issues don’t show until a day or two after release (?). I don’t quite get where they are going with things, but the app updates don’t seem to create a better user experience.
  • Worst updated app ever 1/5

    By Musclecar6
Latest update with one week old version I can no longer get magazines to download. Continues tells me to subscribe but I have been for two years. Go back to the old app. This is the least customer focused app update ever experienced. If not fixed soon, and I do not need to enumerate the problems everyone else has, I will go back to print. Listen to your customers!
  • Was better at one time. 2/5

    By garokaz
Small things like a drop down hint window about “reader version” which happens on every page you view. Got it the first time it happened. Great way to view the magazine but getting there could be smoother.
  • EW EWWWWW 1/5

    By Rudyspa
Utterly disappointed in the new app. Have been a subscriber on print and digital for 10+ years. I am constantly confused as to why the ‘new’ app was even created - none of the enhancements are anything I would have asked for...and the execution is less than satisfactory. Many of the photos that must cost the magazine a fortune to shoot render slowly and are blurry when they finally come up. The ‘extras’ are miserable to navigate, take away from the magazine - both in web view-ability and interest in the topics. Please toss this version and start over or go back to prior set up...
  • Drove me to cancel 1/5

    By Annoyed Email User
What a wonderful app this used to be but the new version doesn't make the investment worth it. Googling content on safari is more enjoyable than this slow to load, incredibly difficult to read, and poor layout experience. What a shame. You had one of the best digital magazine apps around and I subscribed for years. Sometimes new isn't always better.
  • Horrible, Horrible, Horrible App 1/5

    By cardinalsnut
How How How can a major magazine allow such a horrible digital production. The resolution is TERRIBLE. Whole thing is blurry, not crisp like everything else on IPad. The annoying “swipe up for reader view” comes on the screen EVERYTIME you swipe a page. The original app was fantastic and so easy to use and great to look at. Such a waste in this age to produce a worthless app.
  • Skip it 1/5

    By lchboc
The app version of this publication used to have me looking forward to its weekly release. Interactive, fun, timely. This new version is nothing more than a PDF scanned version of the hard copy. Hard to read. Terrible. Soulless. Freezes, doesn’t recognize my subscription most weeks and the ‘live’ feed is nothing short of annoying. Fix it if you want to keep this long time Customer.
  • Update the app already! 1/5

    By Hyphendash
The latest version of the app is slow and the resolution on some of the pages are low quality. Really disappointing.
  • On newsstands before available for download 1/5

    By Taynikki
Why am I a digital subscriber when I can purchase the magazine on the newsstand before it's available for download? The new app is beyond frustrating. Whenever a new issue is finally available, subscribers are prompted to purchase the issue. The only way around this is to log out of the app and then log back in to download the issue. If this, and lag time issues are not fixed soon, I am done with this magazine.
  • Terrible in every way 1/5

    By justrick1701
Have been an EW subscriber since the beginning. This app is a disaster; slow and poorly designed. Meanwhile, non-stop double issues have made this more like Entertainment Bi-Weekly. So disappointing.
