Onavo Protect - VPN Security App

Onavo Protect helps keep you and your data safe when you browse and share information on the web. This powerful app helps keep you safe by understanding when you visit potentially malicious or harmful websites and giving you a warning. It also helps keep your details secure when you login to websites or enter personal information such as bank accounts and credit card numbers. Onavo Protect works to: • Warn you when you visit potentially malicious or harmful sites • Help secure your personal information when you're on public Wi-Fi • Add an extra layer of protection to all of your mobile data traffic by using our VPN How it works To provide this layer of protection, Onavo uses a VPN to establish a secure connection to direct all of your network communications through Onavo’s servers. As part of this process, Onavo collects your mobile data traffic. This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data. Because we're part of Facebook, we also use this info to improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and services people value, and build better experiences.

  • Good but could use improvement 2/5

    By BurntToast60
Can’t turn the vpn off under settings. You can swipe it off but it just turns back on automatically. You have to open the app itself and turn off the vpn. It’s not a huge deal but it’s just kinda of annoying and inconvenient.

Facebook is quite afraid of losing dominance in the publishing, data mining, and advertising business. They bought Onavo for one purpose: to identify popular app and web trends early to give Facebook a chance to buy popular companies or steal their popular features. As a user of this app, ALL of your web and app traffic will be analyzed by Facebook for this purpose. Is the trade off worth it to use a free VPN? The only ‘protection’ this app offers is to obscure your unencrypted internet traffic from your ISP and other users on shared WiFi. Very few websites transmit logins, tokens, or keys unencrypted these days and the next WiFi standard will prevent users of the same access point from seeing each other’s traffic. iOS already offers fraudulent website warnings which makes the last feature of this app an unnecessary duplication. Apple should change their developer agreement to ban the sort of data collection this app pursues.

Supposedly Pandora radio doesn’t work in this country if you have this protection app on. Try turning it off in settings and it just pops right back on. I listen to my Pandora all the time, but if it won’t work because of this app... forget it I don’t want it!

I did not download this on my phone, it just showed up. When I have tried to turn it off it automatically turns back on. I did not add this to my phone but it is at the top of my phone next to the reception strength. It’s been there about a week. I want it off, sounds like FB bought it and they are tracking. I am very upset with FB already because of all the annoying advertising they have added and if you try to delete a site they want to know why. I’m tired of it.

I bought a surveillance camera that apparently came from China, the box that it came in was beat up. The camera is actually panoramic camera V380. So I was supposed to download this application, which never really finished downloading could just froze. I’m going to remove the application and send the camera back.

Be wary of free VPNs. This one is owned by Facebook to collect on its users, so it is literally the opposite of what a VPN is supposed to do. You can read more articles about it from Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch, and Wired.

Usually I skim over the terms of service, but early on in the fine print is a lot of information I found alarming. From what I can tell, this app wants to collect information about my iPhone, my location, apps I have installed and how I use them, websites I visit, etc. Then I see it’s a Facebook company. A quick internet search brings up an article about their “controversial” VPN service. No thanks! I’ll go with a trusted VPN like TunnelBear instead.

    By everylittlebeat
Based off of other reviews regarding this app I'm starting to question are people simply uninformed because they choose to or is paranoia really taking over their common senses. This application does exactly what it says and what it's meant for. VPNs are used to keep your data private from websites, protect yourself when using open public Wi-Fi hotspots and change your IP location if needed. If you know what they're used for they definitely enhance your browsing experience. It's not a malware anti-virus application, guys.
  • Next!!! 1/5

Don’t download this VPN. Check the Privacy Policy . They collects your data (information about your mobile applications and data usage, including the applications installed on your device, the websites you visit and the amount of data you use. Also they track all of your activity.

    By Bfgame
ONLY DOWNOAD THIS APP TO RATE IT BADLY!!! This app is literal spywate, and will send your data to Facebook. Do not use under any circumstances. Use a trustworthy VPN that is rated over 4.5 stars.
  • Fraudulent per news report! Not a virus tool! 1/5

    By DB799703
This app freely shares your personal information with Facebook free of charge. This does not remove viruses and does not perform like a true VPN. Do your research and you'll be shocked at the misdirection used to get you to use this app.

Sure, download this app so Facebook can see exactly what websites you visit and everything else you do online. For "your" protection.

If you install this then everything you do can and WILL get tracked by FACEBOOK even when not using the Facebook app.
  • Shady reviews here 1/5

    By EminIsrafil
It’s hard to believe all these reviews claiming this app somehow saved them from a virus. It would be interesting for Apple to do a review of where these reviews are coming from and if they are authentic.

  • Corporate Spyware 1/5

    By nlamb80
Do NOT install this. It routes ALL of your phone data through a VPN run by Facebook, who then turns around and sells everything you do on your phone to the highest bidder. Marketing this as “Privacy” in the FB app? You should be ashamed, Zuckerberg. Can’t wait for the laws to catch up with this predatory garbage. There are other VPN apps out there which are legit, please do not use this cesspool of an app.

Unlike a typical VPN, Onavo Protect (from a company Facebook purchased in 2013) explicitly gives itself permission to mine your data. “As part of this process, Onavo collects your mobile data traffic. This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data. Because we’re part of Facebook, we also use this info to improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and services people value, and build better experiences.”
  • Had started using it before Facebook bought it 1/5

    By MGunduzz
But obviously I wasn't notified when Facebook bought this VPN company. I used this for years, and didn't have the slightest clue that Facebook owned it. Thankfully I had deleted it over a year ago, but what they collected will stay. I will not be using a shill company's app that sells all their data and is owned by Facebook.
  • Owned by Facebook 1/5

Just so you know, if you use this you give Facebook access to all you traffic. And any review that talks about an iPhone virus is a fake review, iOS is already a sandboxes system.

  • This is Facebook SPYWARE!!! 1/5

    By M3mph1sKyle
This may do what it advertises, but it does so while defeating the entire purpose by giving Facebook all your browsing data!!
  • Facebook uses this to track everything you do 1/5

    By QuintB5
How do you get past a sandboxed system? Make a VPN, it seems. Facebook uses the data gathered by this to track every single thing you do- not just in safari, but every single network connection you make. If you can’t do it in airplane mode, they can see what you’re doing. It’s a good VPN functionality wise. It’s abhorrent privacy wise. Highly recommend PIA or something of that nature.
  • This is a facebook owned data collection app 1/5

Facebook has added a Protect item to a screen in its iOS app that lists Facebook services. Tapping Protect takes you to an App Store page for a VPN called Onavo Protect that admits that it is owned by Facebook and “collects your mobile data traffic.” Worse, 12.5 million iOS users may already be using Onavo Protect. Read the article on TidBits.

Folks - if you’re looking for a VPN, do NOT use this one. Facebook owns them and will track everything you do online and use it for their own advantage. Use an app like Nord VPN, Encrypt.me, TunnelBear or any other trusted VPN that has your true privacy in mind.
  • Facebook owns Onavo. Used to mine data 1/5

    By hamsandwich!
This app is owned by Facebook. It’s an attempt to gather data about your phone usage (and perhaps why Facebook users are leaving in droves). This is not a security app. Think about this— why is it free when every other VPN service is not?
  • Owned by Facebook, will monitor you! 1/5

    By blarhggglle
This is owned an operated by Facebook, whose only purpose for existing is to mine and monitor your activity. THIS IS NOT A SECURITY APP.

Please take a second to read the next sentence. IF YOU ARENT PAYING FOR THE PRODUCT, YOU ARE THE PAYMENT. Handing over your web traffic to any free vpn service ensures that they are selling personal information or whatever they can mine from your device to third parties. Purchased by Facebook in 2013, here is a passage from their terms and service, to save you some trouble: “As part of this process, Onavo collects your mobile data traffic. This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data. Because we’re part of Facebook, we also use this info to improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and services people value, and build better experiences.” Be wary.
