Needs a lot of improvement 3/5
Great concept but alot of issues.
When adding an annual item it shows how much you need to save each month to meet that amount, but the minute you back out of it, you cannot see the amount you need to save each month.
Monthly budget amount and what you have left to budget only shows on the edit screen. Makes no sense.
The hunt for a budgeting app continues
Optimize for iPhone X ASAP!! 5/5
Amazing app so optimize for iPhone X please! I use this daily
Great but some glitches 4/5
I LOVE the App. But what would make it 5 stars, and what would make a SIGNIFICANT difference in my user experience is having a "status" column in the transactions. Right now I am having to date uncleared transactions as "12/31/17" just so I can keep track of my uncleared items. Then I have to scroll over and over again for each transaction to change the date to the date it posted just so I know which transactions have cleared, also to make sure I didn't forget to log any transactions. BIG PAIN IN THE BUTT!
PLEASE PUT A "STATUS" COLUMN ON THE MOBILE APP. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE !!!!
A little confusing 4/5
By ✨ Bree ✨
I just got it no more than five minutes ago and it somehow says I have 400 in my account but I know I typed 160? Maybe it’s calculating what I’ll mark by the end of the month?? I don’t know; I’m just confused.
I’ve tried everything! Finally! 5/5
Finally i found an app with a budget that can be adjusted the way I need it! I’ve searched high and low for a budget that can be set to start on a certain day of the month, because our income is not on the first, and this app has that feature!!
Also love the envelope system...we tried going all cash so we could budget with envelopes and it just doesn’t work for our lifestyle, but this app lets you budget with envelopes electronically which is awesome!
Very helpful tutorial videos help you get everything set up, and very pleased that the free version is everything I need!
Only suggestion or complaint (which is really lame...but hear me out) is the little smiling/frowning envelope faces on my budgets....sometimes I can’t help that my envelope has run out, and those little faces seem to be reprimanding me for no good reason. Wish I could edit them a little per envelope to be more neutral when I need them to be. Otherwise, love that they’re telling me when I’m “on track” or to “stop spending for a few days”
Overall, I definitely suggest trying this app.
Can’t use emojis in the envelope name 3/5
By Mike 1057
Can’t use emojis in the envelope name. Whenever I place an emoji in the envelope name and save it, the name either doesn’t save the emoji or, if the emoji is at the beginning, it deletes the entire name of the envelope.
Too much money 1/5
After you put so many things on your list it requires a subscription. I could understand a one time purchase but a subscription? The point is to save money not spend more a month on an app.
Crashes constantly 1/5
Any time I hit the tab to edit transactions, the app crashes. It’s unusable in its current state. I’ve emailed the support team several times; no response.
All good. 4/5
By Amit Lopes
The app does what it I wanted. I request just one feature. Can you add a functionality to save the receipt of the expense? That would be really helpful.
Great, but... 3/5
By Mr. Wright's Wife
This app is great, but one thing that drives me crazy is not having a way to distinguish transactions that have cleared my bank and those that have not. I love everything else, but that is a feature that would be extremely helpful.
Best budget app there is 5/5
I have tried them all, and this one is the best hands down. I am a Dave Ramsey nut so I tried his Every Dollar app first. This one has so much more to offer and is a lot easier to use.
Extremely difficult to make changes with your account. I tried starting over and deleting mine twice— the third time I gave up 😠
Good app. Refill lacks 2/5
The app has been great for my wife and I to keep in sync. However. Every month I have mess with getting the amounts correct in the envelopes. Part is my ignorance, but this app makes it non intuitive. Other apps are much easier, but you have to use iCloud to sync. Sharing Apple ID’s is a pain.
There is no way to speak with developers. Using the web interface is much better than the mobile. Interface. I’ve used this for 4 months or better. Only app that I continue to have issues with.
Best budgeting app of all time 5/5
Yeah ... it is . Even though it’s manual, it’s much easier to use than Mint.
The only feature I am wanting right now is the ability to see all transactions of a specific type during a certain period. Right now it just shows all transactions so while it’s good to see the pie charts of where your money went, you can’t really see exactly what you spent it on for that period of time.
Other than that, amazing app, has actually helped me and wife stick to a budget for once. Nothing else worked
Not user friendly/too complicated 1/5
By frustrated for the last hour
I really like the whole idea of this but it’s overly complicated with no instructions.
Frustrating to work with 2/5
By The real SheRa
At first I really loved Goodbudget. I love the digital envelope system, how easy it is to input expenses, the recurring payments/income feature, etc. More recently I’ve found some of the processes more cumbersome than helpful. When I set a recurring income, including specifying which envelope the money goes into, it resets the envelope at the base amount set rather than adding to what’s already in there. It takes the excess and sweeps it into “Unallocated” rather than keeping it where I very deliberately put it. Then I have to go through the process of figuring out how much was in each envelope before my income hit, and transfer from unallocated into the various envelopes (each transfer happening separately).
All in all, this program is pretty good, but only if you’re budgeting and living paycheck to paycheck, especially since it’s free. If you are saving up for something or want to have extra money in a few of your envelopes, this program becomes more of a headache than it’s worth.
Great app, but no iPhone X support 3/5
Goodbudget is an extremely useful app, but it hasn’t been updated for four months, and still lacks iPhone X support (literally the only app I have that doesn’t yet support it). Such a slow update cycle doesn’t bode well for this app, and I’ve begun to look for alternatives.
Best budget App 5/5
Hands down the best, most uncomplicated budget app there is! Only been using this app for a few months and already it’s saved me from having overdrafted my Checking acct multiple times. I’ve used spending tracker apps but the budgeting never worked for me. I actually like that they only give me 10 free envelopes, it forces me to keep my categories few and simple, and a lot easier to manage! 👍🏽👍🏽
This app ruined my life 5/5
Ever since I started using Goodbudget, my shopping has plummeted down to essentials and a small splurge once in a big while, I pretty much eat out only when dining with friends, and now I have all this money left over to build my savings and even make a donation, all because of this stupid app. I don’t even know who I am anymore.
The set-up takes some time, but once you get past that, the app makes it easy to manage your budget. I manually enter every purchase or bill, but the benefit of this is that I’m more consciously aware of every time I spend money. Get this app, and ruin your life. Or change it for the better. It all depends on which way you look at it.
Financial Must 5/5
By Emankcin Dose
My wife and i have paid off all our debt and are staying dept free with the help of this app. It truly is amazing. It's as simple or complicated as you like. I don't link my bank accounts and use the free version. My wife is android and I'm iOS.
I recommend this app to everyone, everyone i have a conversation about finances. Quite literally.
This is not the year 2020 1/5
and yet the app sets the year to 2020 and cannot be changed. This means every month you have to manually re-enter your budget - because the app won’t auto refill until 2020. Mind boggling.
Hey GoodBudget Team, for the money that is being spent on this app by thousands you need to step up your game and optimize the app for the X, add frequently requested features, and actually respond to your ratings. I could optimize this app in less than a day, so please, pay for a developer and get this train moving again.
I wanted to love this app but it makes no sense!!
Loved it 5/5
We loved this app and would love to use it again but it needs to be updated. Please...please...please.
I'm sure this app will be great when I figure out how to use it. It's not very intuitive and the video tutorials are only for the. Computer based version. Not mobile. I think i did something wrong because no matter what I do I get a red bar. I'm guessing I have to wait until the next month for it to reset. If I takes me more than 2 days I'm bailing and trying a different app.
Love it 5/5
This app has helped me and my wife track our spending so much better! The overspending problem due to lack of planning and tracking is gone. The graphics are fun too.
We do not use the bank features, we only use the envelope budget feature and we manually enter in everything.
Good...but could be better 4/5
This is a great program for a virtual envelope budgeting system. Nothing else out there really compares to this format, and I’ve looked. However, I keep looking for one specific reason. There’s no option to automatically download financial transactions. They will tell you it’s so you pay attention to your finances more by having to manually enter, but in my experience the time it takes to manually input means I often get behind, then my envelopes aren’t balanced and I still don’t know how much I have to spend. Honestly, it just seems like laziness at this point on behalf of the developers. Would be nice to just open the app and quickly categorize my transactions that are already downloaded and waiting for me. All in all though, this is still the best setup for budgeting.
Difficult to use 1/5
This app isn’t intuitive. It is hard to figure out how to add money, how to increase your envelope amount, etc. I tried Goodbudget after leaving a great budget app that was completely intuitive to use, but charges after 2 months worth of budgets...I guess it’s time for me to put my money where my mouth is!
Too expensive 3/5
This app is exactly what I need but it would ironically be the most expensive reoccurring software payment in my budget. I love it because the categories (envelopes) are fully customizable, but they make you pay $17.99 every 3 months for more envelopes. That is ridiculous. It also doesn’t link to my bank account, which would have made the insane $17.99 slightly more tempting, but in the end I’m deleting the app simply because it’s just too expensive. I’m bummed because this app is exactly what I need.
EXACTLY what I needed 5/5
This app is amazing. I used the paper-envelope method successfully for years, but then started to get lazy & too addicted to my smartphone for all the paper. My finances became a total mess. I was in desperate need of something that emulated a style of budgeting that made sense to me, that was easy & simple, & that didn’t force me to link an app to my checking account (which I absolutely refuse to do). This app is all of those things & has been exactly what I needed to get back on track with my budgeting! I will say: the interface is a little counterintuitive & takes a little getting used to, but once you’ve got it it’s incredibly simple. It’s definitely not enough to give only 4/5 stars, in my opinion (which seems to be the only reason many other reviewers do). I am so grateful for this app & can see myself using this for years to come.
10 mins into using this app and I got lots of questions and still haven’t start budgeting. I feel like it’s adding extra frustration on top of managing my finances just trying to use/understand this app. I don’t get why everyone is so crazy about this dumb app.
Paid for extended but... 2/5
Money disappears, it tries to anticipate where you want money to go (and fails) it also assumes you make the same amount of income all the time which makes things frustrating for people whose income changes every week.
I was spending more time keeping and going through receipts every week (not to mention having to split up purchases to ensure correct receipts) than I use to before this app.
So I deleted all my accounts and envelopes. I created one account and three envelopes. I hope when my subscription runs out in 1 1/2 months it won’t mess up my envelopes.
Also, for all the other envelopes I deleted? I went out and got a good old fashioned mini binder and have been doing the rest by hand. Has cut my budgeting time in half. (Which is what the app was supposed to do. SMH)
$60/year subscription.. 2/5
App/concept is nice (budget vs expense based), but $60/year for a registered account..?
(The registration is required for useful app features and multiple account tracking.)
Nope, moving along.
Waste of time 1/5
Overly complicated design and layout. After hours of tediously entering everything in, it just crashes. I can’t access half the app. It’s simpler to just use notepad.
Fantastic, but needs updating 4/5
I LOVE GoodBudget, I’ve been sending people to GoodBudget since it was still called EEBA and no one could figure out what that meant. I’ve been using it for over 4 years now and GoodBudget and Dave Ramsey are the primary reasons my car wasn’t repossessed. It’s simple and easy to use, but another reviewer mentioned some stuff about the app and I have to agree. I’m still on a 6s, so I don’t know how it integrates on the X or the 8, but there’s still a lot that this app could do and doesn’t. I would love a feature that would let me take pictures of receipts so I can have them at tax time. And a way to tag things as tax deductible without having to create entirely new envelopes for it. I would also like an app that is optimized for my iPad, rather than just using the webpage. The other reviewer mentioned referral bonuses and that would be amazing.
Still waiting for iPhone X update 4/5
So far, so good... there are some things I’d do differently.. this I like and don’t like but overall it’s nice to be able to categorize everything by envelopes. I’m still learning how it all works so I don’t want to be critical but I don’t want to get to into it if the app doesn’t update regularly. I should be able to log into the app via Face ID and it should be full screen on an iPhone X... at least. Hope/need to see this soon. Thank you.
Spend Time With It 4/5
It’s a pretty good app. You may have to spend some time with it to familiarize yourself with how to work it at first. I wish there was a bit of a tutorial to get started. Aside from that, I would like an option to add a picture of my receipt for a transaction/email receipt attachment. Solid choice for a budget app nonetheless.
Only allows 10 items before they charge you 1/5
Will only let you add in 10 items into your bills/expenses before you have to pay for more. Also, don't add your personal info.
Very useful app 4/5
Have been very happy with the app for a long time, but please update it to make use of the iPhone X screen.
Easy to use App. Simple and very useful.
Allows me to take my bi weekly income, and divide it into different “envelopes”, where I designate a budget to each envelope.
Great until it’s not 2/5
This app was just what I was looking for until I needed additional envelopes. If there was a set price, I would have paid but I have no interest in paying a monthly fee. The entire point of this is for the budget. You’ve now added an extra line item to every month.
Has saved me thousands; but it’s time to step up the technology! 4/5
I have used Goodbudget for 3 years now, and it has absolutely changed my life. Even as a single-person household working in human services, Goodbudget helped me save a down payment for a house, which I bought 18 months after I began using the program. Today, Goodbudget helps make paying all the monthly bills possible and still have money for 401k and for whatever fun goals I set, such as saving up for an overseas vacation or a new car.
My parents began using Goodbudget a year ago, and they have also saved thousands within the course of a year. I can’t recommend this program enough.
That being said, it’s high time that the IT department stepped up its game. The app hasn’t been optimized for iPhone X, envelopes cannot be fully customized on the app, etc. If I’m going to keep recommending the app to all my friends, I hope they will step up their game and make the app something to be really proud of. (I don’t like recommending a program and then apologizing to my friends because the app is lacking in areas). Also, pricing could be reduced to attract more newcomers, in combination with starting a referral program so we could be rewarded for bringing Goodbudget brand new long term paying customers.
Great at first, but not practical long term 2/5
By Stasey Elizabeth
I'm not sure if I'm missing something but it seems as though the envelopes don't reset each pay period. I've set my budget period as semi-monthly but it doesn't seem to have any impact. I had assumed my envelopes would reset at the dates I set but nothing happens (leading me to question why it asked me to set dates in the first place).
Neat concept 3/5
I wish this could work but not enough free envelopes for this to work for me. I might consider paying one fixed amount to unlock the app but not interested in this expensive subscription. People looking for a budgeting app are trying to stop spending, not looking for $5+ a month subscriptions to keep track of.
Nice idea, but not intuitive... 2/5
By SB Local
And when I visit the help center to clarify terminology and usage, I receive instructions such as “ before you do anything take a deep breath...”. “ it’s best to start… With the information you already know”. If that type of information is useful, there are many other similar platitudes shared. I want to figure out why my budget for each “envelope” doubled and how to change it? Will the same budgeted amounts repeat and or rollover next month? I suspect the information is somewhere, but it’s like reading the small print to locate it.
Wasn’t a fan 2/5
I’m in college and desperately needed to manage my money. Started using this a few months ago and it was doing the trick but it’s very confusing to add money and it says your in the negative even though there still is money in the ”envelope” Not user friendly
Very Convenient 5/5
Makes setting money aside very easy. Never worry about having enough money for infrequent expenses or random gifts; just make an envelope for it.
By Optical S4
You can only put 10 lines in this budget before they want you to buy more space. Save your time and find another budget app.
Wish it would compare to income 1/5
I only went through the setup which was pretty easy. It never had me enter my income. So what’s the point if it would let you know what’s left from overall income instead of what’s in the envelops. So I’ve deleted and will look for something complete.
Very confusing app 3/5
I can’t figure out how to do anything. I’ll stick to the pennies app.
