Not User Friendly 1/5
I don’t think this app is what I was looking for or expected. I simply wanted an app to be able to have “money folders” rather than multiple savings accounts. I have big and small splurge items I like to save up for (vacations, shoes, tech, etc.) without have to set up multiple different savings accounts with my bank. I wanted multiple folders in ONE account, and I thought this app would give me this experience. It is not user friendly or self explanatory at ALL. I had no clue what I was doing and there is no “how to” or tutorial upon download. Very frustrating to use if you have no clue what you’re doing.
I love this app- I wonder if one more feature is possible 5/5
By A satisfied user1499
I’m giving this 5 starts because it is amazing and even though there’s something I wish it had (which I’ll get into) that isn’t to say this app is lacking. It’s simplistic and shared in real time. My partner and I have been using it for a couple months. Functions well on both our devices- apple for me, android for him. I handle all the household finances so being able to see all the spending being done is great- I don’t have to constantly ask the s/o “did you get gas” “how much were the groceries” trying to stay on top of it all. Its so easy to enter in spending, and to name envelopes. It is all extremely user friendly, designed in an intuitive and aesthetically pleasing way, I could go on for a long time about all the positive aspects of this app. Try for yourself and see how well it works. It makes budgeting a little fun and a lot less stressful when everything you need to calculate your finances is right in front of you.
The feature I wish this app had is something no app I’ve found so far has- a bi-weekly refill section.
Our grocery/gas budget is sorted by when our paychecks come in (I think this is the case for many people who live paycheck to paycheck) so when we hit the three-paycheck month, it threw off number calculations in the app making it appear as though we were in the red when in fact things were on track.
Just as there are separate monthly/yearly categories, to have envelopes that have a set amount and refill every two weeks on a decided day (for us it is fridays, but not everyone gets paid on the same day everywhere) that would not only improve our lives and use of the app, but it would give this app a major leg up on competition because NO ONE has this function that I can find. Not one other app.
Aside from that, really spectacular app. Will definitely keep using, and will recommend to anyone who ever asks for a “good budget”-ing app.
Excellent App 4/5
By Jon D.H.
This is probably the best budget app I’ve ever used. It’s very close to what I would make if I were to design a budgeting app myself. I recommended this app to several people within the first few hours of using it. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it limits you to one account on the free version. In summary, it’s an excellent app and I’d recommend it to anyone.
Cant unsubscribe, get YNAB 2/5
I’m sure this app is fine for some people, but after comparing four similar apps, YNAB or You Need A Budget is BY FAR the best app I’ve ever seen for this sort of thing. I am one month in, and it is literally saving me a huge amount of money. I can’t believe how awesome YNAB budgeting is. I didn’t care for Goodbudget, with its envelope system. I paid for it, regretted it, and then tried to unsubscribe from the emails. They can keep my money, but for some reason I can’t unsubscribe from the emails. I’ve tried several times, and the emails keep coming. I put them in my spam folder, and yet emails keep coming to my inbox. Goodbudget,Please fix your unsubscribe button.
Not user friendly 1/5
By Uncle Rico's steak
Not sure why they make it so complicated to just fill the envelopes. Interface just seems backwards. Deleted and onto the next one
Was my favorite budgeting app 1/5
This was my favorite budgeting app until the recent update. Now they have removed the option to “set to budget amount” when filing envelopes it has become a lot harder to use. Looking for a new app.
It forces monthly subscription and then doesn’t makes you type in your cc info. Then if you opt out it deletes everything
Dislike update 2/5
I’ve been using Goodbudget for many years. I’ve stuck with it because of its simple user experience. The new update is unnecessarily complicated when it comes to filling envelopes. I hope the developers make the experience more user friendly.
Dislike the new update 3/5
Normally I would give this app 100 stars but they just did an update and I really don’t like it. Adding money to the envelopes is complicated now and I can’t find some of the old options like just setting a single envelope to it’s budgeted amount. It doesn’t look like they changed anything else though.

I used Goodbudget for a little over 5 years. I stopped using it because I was spending too much time and energy manually entering every transaction. That said, it’s still a great, simple, and incredibly useful tool. It has been very good to me and has stayed true to source the entire time. Thank you Dayspring.
A great App but needs a little improvement 4/5
Goodbudget is an amazing app that helps with budgeting. It does what it is supposed to and can help everyone to understand how to budget well and effectively. Goodbudget has graphs that are easy and simple to understand. One of them tells you where you spend your money the other tells you how much you spend and how much income you get. Goodbudget has easy-to-understand features and if you don’t understand they took time to create videos on how to learn to use the app well. The app also helps show you how much you spend and save to keep up with your finances well.
However, this app isn’t perfect just like everything. One negative about this app is that there is a paywall to get all the features and it can be tricking when first starting. The videos created are also a bit of a problem because they show that the app is very complex and can’t be fully used if not watched. Personally, one thing that bothered me was I needed to pay for an app about budgeting which I think is silly.
I understand that the app is free and a paywall is there for the creators to earn money from it, you can improve on helping a basic user to add a tutorial on what each feature does. This would be very simple to add and will help more people to want to download it for its simple explanation on how to use it. Other than this simple thing I love your app and how you guys were able to make it.
Very confusing 1/5
First it looked very user friendly but then once i got set up i hd absolutely no idea how to use it. Very confusing. Uninstalled right away
Not very modifiable 2/5
I don’t like that it carries over amounts and gives incorrect totals for overall category and month to month. The money not spent can’t be deleted and it’s not working for me to see how well I stay within an overall amount. I tried deleting all my envelopes and doing just one but the previous balance stayed with me and I could NOT get rid of it. Not suiting my needs cause it gets too confusing.
Best app 5/5
It is the best budget app I have had so far, and I have been used it for at least 3 years now. It helps me to control my spending and starting saving. One minor recommendation I would share is that it would be nice if they can develop an iPad version.
Keeps crashing 1/5
Just downloaded this app and within my first 2 entries it crashed. Each time I enter an envelope- it crashes.
Piece of crap 5/5
Thanks for this garbage that doesn’t have half of what it advertises unless you pay more great premise for an app I’m trying to save money with
The worst 1/5
Next to impossible to do simple tasks on this app.
Excellent App for budgeting 5/5
Have tried many apps and software for budgeting purposes and this one by far is the best. I have been doing budgeting on paper for years and never could find one that would suit my needs and feel comfortable enough to replace the paper budget ledgers but this one does it. All of my budgeting requirements are met in this one app. Even putting in my credit card rewards which makes my credit card balance go down and my daily fund go up or whatever fund I want to credit with the reward is accomplished with this app. Never have I found an app that does exactly what I was doing until this one. Definitely worth the cost of a subscription to keep it. Makes budgeting fun. Keeps me in check and actually helps me save. Love the reports feature as well which I couldn’t get on paper. Helps searching for transactions if I need to find a receipt like an issue that may arise with a product I purchase but need the receipt for the manufacture warranty or extended warranty. All this can be input into the app and/or on the web with my phone. It’s a money saver and support is great. Heard back from a Developer within the hour of asking the question. Got my daughter going with it now as well to get her finances in order. I have an envelope system with my receipts and can record and track with this app. Other budgeting programs could not do it all as this one can. So glad I found it and tried it. Was about to give up looking and stay with the paper. All good now and my search has ended.
Why not give a tutorial..........
Life Changing for the Ramsey Fan! 5/5
I waited a long time to write this review. I’ve been using Goodbudget for a couple of years now, and with any new thing it takes time to discover how best to apply it to your life.
I’m a huge fan of Dave Ramsey, and would love to live in an all cash world, but for me that’s unrealistic. I like to swipe the cards, and I love the rewards. Credit Cards are not evil, the lack of self control is. Remember that.
Anyway, with Goodbudget I can have my credit cards and still be financially free! With the accounting system this provides, my credit cards essentially take the role of debit cards in my wallet. I plug in what I’ve bought, everything subtracts, and I pay my bill at the end.
No more complicated spreadsheets. No more writing transactions down twice (out of the checkbook and out of the budget), no more spending hours and hours looking for .22 cents
No more, no more, no more.
The little Goodbudget bots do all that number running around for me!
Literally, I’d take an entire day managing out what is basically Goodbudget on paper. AN ENTIRE DAY.
Now that same work takes 10 minutes. No sh*t. TEN MINUTES.
I even print out reports weekly and have a sit down with my hubs so we can talk about where we are doing great and where we can improve.
I’ve been able to get myself from living DAY to DAY to living MONTH to MONTH and now YEAR to YEAR.
That’s right people... from Valentines Day to Christmas...all paid for, waiting in their happy little envelopes.
I will scream it from every rooftop around, the person who laid in bed and said at 2am “there should be an app for this” ...you’ve changed my life. I love you to the moon and back.
Great app but WAY too expensive 2/5
I really like the simplicity of the app but costing users 7 bucks a month after they exceed 10 envelopes is crazy.
Not for iPad in Landscape 4/5
I wanted this to work! I use iPad like laptop, generally landscape mode with keyboard. Loaded the app and it is small like phone and even though it has option to expand, it still only works in portrait mode. Uninstalled :(
Only allows 10 free “envelopes” then you have to pay, look elsewhere if you really want to deep-dive into your funds
App instantly crashes 12/3/20 1/5
Love the app. Premium member for years. What's up with the app over the last week? Not working at all: app or web.
I can’t reconcile! 1/5
There is some data limit in the reconciliation where I’m getting an error trying to reconcile my checking account.
I’ve been back and forth with their tech support without a resolution that works.
I’m very close to going back to my excel based approach. 😢
Lately I have had endless problems with this app. It crashes constantly, transactions won’t load at all, it won’t sync data despite being connected to the internet. If I log in to the website, no issues. I don’t know what has changed. Please fix this!
You’re app has been crashing so much these days. It’s really getting in the way of me balancing daily
Missing something? 4/5
Love the concept, website, and the app except you can’t group in the app. Am I missing something? Otherwise would give 5 starts easily.
Hard to Use 2/5
We found this hard to use. Not intuitive. It also does unexpected things that aren’t understandable. Finally, I emailed them with a question and went over a week with no answer. We find Homebudget easier to use; but it does have less features than Goodbudget.
Weekly purchase 1/5
I couldn’t plug in my weekly purchases
The best 5/5
I tried a lot of other budgeting apps before finally finding and falling in love with Goodbudget. For those who want complete control and awareness of their spending habits, THIS IS THE APP FOR YOU. For those looking for a hands off budgeting approach, I suggest you look elsewhere. The app is fairly simple to figure out and they have SO many tools and tips on their website in case you are having any issues. Unlike many of the other popular budgeting apps, Goodbudget does NOT connect to your bank account, therefore it does not automatically file transactions for you. I personally prefer this as it makes you more aware of the money you are spending when you have to physically put in the transaction. The envelope feature is great to help you keep ahead of bills and daily expenses, and if you go to their website on a desktop you are able to make envelopes for weekly, monthly, yearly, etc. I do wish this functionality would make its way to the app as anything other than my “every two week” envelopes are under the header of “other” instead of it saying monthly, or yearly. The $50 yearly fee is honestly nothing compared to the amount of money I’ve saved by using this app. The credit card and debt feature has helped me only make purchases I know I can pay off right away and helps me manage my student loan payments. This is a very well rounded app and they continue to make updates and listen to their users about what features they want. I highly recommend.
Just Perfect! 5/5
This app/website is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I wanted a simple way to track my spending digitally. I also wanted to be able to create a two-week budget instead of a monthly budget, based on my paychecks. I tried Mint, YNAB, EveryDollar, tracking in Excel, and tracking on paper, but nothing suiting my needs as well as this. Thank you, Goodbudget, for creating this simple and effective tool! So glad I didn’t give up my search.
Bug Needs Fixing 1/5
There is a bug in the most recent version (9/25 for iOS 14) that rearranges my envelopes after I edit them into the order I’d like. Please fix this!
Only good if you pay 2/5
Took my money 1/5
By took my money this app
The app took my money and erased my account
I tried figuring this app out and its dated look and functionality make it difficult to understand and use. I'm sure it's a great app, but I'm going to stick to Pennies and DailyBudget as my go-to budget apps.
Just what I’m looking for 4/5
No compulsory sign in or bloated features. I like it
It’s great, but could be so much better 3/5
I love the newest update where we can now make debt payments in the app and add new debt accounts as well! This is convenient to see my husband and I’s complete financial picture. I have been a fan of Goodbudget for years, although I just started getting my spouse into budgeting so couldn’t spring for premium until recently. I love that i get an extra tier of support and unlimited accounts and envelopes.
What I don’t love is that it can be difficult to set up everything (I had a fun time and had to erase and start over several times). the video tutorials on YouTube often left me with more questions but I stuck with GB because it is less expensive than Dave Ramsey’s EveryDollar Plus.
I also don’t love how savings goal customization got reduced a while back ago from a lot of different goal periods down to two (monthly and yearly) for Apple products. Bring that back and you’ll get 5 stars from me.
Difficult to use getting paid biweekly 1/5
If you get paid monthly maybe this works. I wanted to transfer my spreadsheet into a budgeting app. First pay period I pay some things, second I pay others. This system isn’t set up for that.
Shouldn’t be such a pain to use. 1/5
Very dissatisfied with this app. After trying it years ago after recommendation I tried again. Bought year subscription. For my budget I use a lot of ‘envelopes’ to track and control spending. Monthly fill doesn’t automate unless you go in manually the first time and specify each one. I paid for automation and got junk. No value for my subscription.
Poor Customer Service 2/5
I have made several attempts to contact this company with no response. It is a waste of money.
What would I do without it?! 5/5
This is simply a fantastic app! It truly does allow me to stay on track of my finances and keep money allocated into different envelopes so that I can be prepared for when known expenses come up!
The only feedback is I wish they would let you have at least 15 free annual envelopes instead of only 10.
No tech support 1/5
I have used Goodbudget for several years now and thought it was a great, simple, budgeting tool. I’ve recommended it to several family and friends. However, this past week as I was inserting info into my app the whole thing shut down and when I opened it back up all of my envelopes were screwed up. They wouldn’t show any deposits for the past 5 months. Needless to say I was pretty upset. It threw all of my envelopes off. I learned the hard way that the ONLY way to contact this company is through email. It’s been almost a week now and I still have not hear from anyone... so I switched to Dave Ramsey’s app - Every dollar. So far I like it a lot better. And they actually have a chat support. If I’m gng to pay for an app at least I have support. You failed Goodbudget. And I will tell all of my family and friends to switch too.
App is buggy 1/5
Monthly envelopes won’t fill and just states sync error.
No adaptive view for iPad? 3/5
This version is optimized for iPhone. I hope the developer considers an iPad version.
Costs monthly 1/5
The wait until you enter all of your budget info to tell you they want a monthly subscription fee.
More Stars Worthy But... 2/5
The app is telling me every time now that it can’t sync. Tried clearing it out, resetting my phone, everything. Disappointed with that but otherwise this app has been a lifesaver.
Best app I’ve used 5/5
Been using this app for years. My only addition would be to have envelopes to track credit card balances, showing what the credit limit is and how much is available, but not having that accounted for in the all envelopes total.
Tell your money what to do before it leaves you 5/5
I’ve been using this app for at least 8 years (Remember when she was called EEBA?) This app motivated me to take charge of my $, pay off debt and live an intentional, enjoyable life of financial stewardship. I’m a disciple of Jesus Christ and a student of Dave Ramsey. This app is FAR more robust than Every Dollar. Discipline yourself and your spending and you’ll be sweetly surprised as your financial goals are achieved: debt free living, achieve savings goals to purchase cars for cash and to pay off a mortgage early. Budgeting would be a horrible chore if it weren’t for this app. The sales / tech support team are top notch. You will not regret making Goodbudget a part of your personal finance tool chest. I use it WITHOUT linking to external accounts to force me to balance and track my accounts. Try the free version and commit yourself to track all your spending (ALL YOUR SPENDING) for 2 months. This will help you develop a budget. If you’re using the free version with consistent discipline for 2 months, upgrade to the full version. You won’t regret it.
