Google Family Link for parents App

Whether your children are younger or in their teens, the Family Link app lets you set digital ground rules to help guide them as they learn, play, and explore online. For children under 13 (or the applicable age of consent in your country), Family Link also lets you create a Google Account for your child that's like your account, with access to most Google services. You can: Guide them to good content • View their activity - Not all screen time is the same. Help your child make healthy decisions about what they do on their Android device, with activity reports showing how much time they’re spending on their favorite apps. • Manage their apps - Handy notifications let you approve or block apps your child wants to download from the Google Play Store. You can also manage in-app purchases, and hide specific apps on their device. • Feed their curiosity - It can be hard to figure out what apps are right for your child, so Family Link shows you teacher-recommended apps on Android that you can add directly to their device. Keep an eye on screen time • Set limits - It’s up to you to decide the right amount of screen time for your child. Family Link lets you set time limits and a bedtime for their supervised devices, so you can help them find a good balance. • Lock their device - Whether it’s time to go play outside, have dinner, or just spend time together, you can remotely lock a supervised device whenever it’s time to take a break. See where they are • It’s helpful to be able to find your child when they’re on the go. You can use Family Link to help locate them as long as they’re carrying their Android devices. Important Information • Family Link’s tools vary depending on your child’s device. See a list of compatible devices at • While Family Link helps you manage your child's purchases and downloads from Google Play, they will not need approval to install app updates (including updates that expand permissions), apps you have previously approved, or apps that have been shared in Family Library. Parents should regularly review their child’s installed apps and app permissions in Family Link. • You should carefully review the apps on your child’s supervised device and disable those you don’t want them to use. Note that you may not be able to disable some pre-installed apps. • To see the location of your child or teen’s device, it must be powered on, recently active, and connected to the internet. • Teacher-recommended apps are only available on Android devices in the US to parents of children of certain ages.

Set up my child and agreed to family link. Now I can set up his email on my phone.
  • Bad app, nonexistent support, limited family management 1/5

    By TempTag
There is no way to manage a preexisting account without an Android device - but that device cannot be a 2 in 1 chromebook - huh? I thought Apple’s family management was poor but it’s far better than this useless app. I tried to contact support, but phone support does not call back, and chat support is laughably bad. The app does not fill an iPad screen so typing was slow and it still felt like a one-sided chat waiting minutes for simple chat responses. I assumed I was dealing with bad automated chat support until the misspellings gave away that I was dealing with a human. I tried to escalate but the “support” rep disconnected the chat. End result no Google play on my kids chromebook - at least the iPads all continue to work as expected!
  • Not good app 1/5

    Hate it way to complicated
  • My kid can’t even access his Apple ID thanks a lot 1/5

This app isn’t really integrated how I imagined great concept needs easier access and a simplistic theme
  • Unwieldy and Very Limited 1/5

I tried to create an account to allow my child to have their own YouTube subscriptions as a way of managing content they watch. This is partly necessary because YouTube kids is NOT available on Apple TV or Laptops. Once I created an account, since the account age was under 13 years old I couldn’t use that account to sign into YouTube. I tried to update the birthdate to make it over 13 but it errors out telling me that it is required for a managed account to be under 13. I tried logging into YouTube kids on my phone but it just had me log in with my parent account. So it seems that creating a managed child account is of no benefit for YouTube consumption. I did not find an ‘Unmanage’ action. I only found a ‘Completely Delete’ action, which I didn’t want to do. I even tried whitelisting but I was still unable to access YouTube with the child’s account. I have now updated the birthdate to have the account turn 13 tomorrow hoping for the email that will allow the account to manage itself.
  • So disappointed! 1/5

This application stinks; slows things down. Doesn’t connect properly. The kids are frustrated; I’m frustrated and if you uninstall it there’s a promise of more problems 😩. I wish I had NEVER installed this garbage!
  • Crap 1/5

    By ManiacalMatt
Garbage, it doesn’t work. My kids are 8 & 9 and I own the email account being managed. So it doesn’t block anything because it uses my age. Don’t waste your time with this product.

For one, my daughter is 14 and I still feel it necessary to filter and restrict however, google thinks after 12 it should be a free for all for kids. Create a gmail with a younger age for kids in this case. Also, there’s no way for me to log on and off the app. It’s logged in at all times. My child figured out that she could approve her own requests and unlock her own phone once it locks out by going on the app. There should be a way to put a password in, if we want, to confirm changes.
  • Useless 1/5

If your child has a chrome book and a telephone this is the most useless piece of crap app on the market

  • No way to approve apps 1/5

    By Phil 08976
I’ve been horribly unsuccessful at being able to actually approve my child’s use of any apps on their iPad. Every time we try it just says account can’t be added. This app give no real management control over any of these permissions
  • Confusing 1/5

    By five10er
This app doesn’t seem to do much. I don’t see how to control time on the phone. It only seems to control what content he can go to once he signed into google. Very confusing.

My children are growing up so fast so I use this app to protect them! It also helps me be aware of the amount of screen time they have! Must have! Definitely helps ease my mind!

    Good app to manage kids
  • Ridiculous! 1/5

    By JimiMat
I don’t know what I’m missing but I can’t set this up. The app prompts to open child’s device install the children and teens app and enter a code when when prompted. But I’m not ever prompted for a code. Instead, the children and teens app asks which account I want to supervise. I’m logged in as the kid. I don’t want to supervise anything I just want to link it to this ridiculous app.
  • App locked both my kids phones 1/5

    By WifyandMommyof2
My kids got new phones for Christmas. This app looked promising to keep an eye on both of them and keep them out of trouble. Love the idea of limiting screen time and location tracking. Well for a day the phones seems to be working with the app flawlessly but then my daughters phone said it was locked. Well I didn’t lock the device and when I went to use the app from my tablet it would not allow me to access the parent code. Tried a few times then let me in, but the code would not unlock her phone. I tried everything going through settings on the phone but it would not allow me to access anything. We tried to rest the device but it said the permissions were blocked. I had to do a external reset on her phone to clear the device. An hour later my sons phone did the exact same thing. I have never dealt with a app this bad that I had to reboot two phones. Why is there no way to unlock the device using the phone instead you have to use the app on another device. This app needs more work.
  • Defeats its own purpose 2/5

    By R. McGoofus
Set up chrome book. It has you enter child’s email, but requires you to enter parent’s family link password. Once it’s set up, it continues to require the parent’s password to log into chrome book. The result is that you either have to be there to log your child onto their chrome book, or you have to give them your password. If you give them your password, they now have admin privileges which defeats the whole purpose. The whole point is to let them operate their device while you are able to monitor everything remotely.

  • Incredibly difficult 1/5

    By rivnocar
This app was incredibly difficult to set up. I kept having to start over to get beyond the step I completed. When I seek the “help” options, it keeps telling me to push icons I don’t have. I can’t see my child’s browser history as promised. I can’t limit or control as promised. This was a giant waste of time. I can’t even submit the review in a timely fashion because my nickname is taken. Ugh.

Set up three kids the same way. My second kid has the same settings but can still access anything. The other two have the parent controls like they should. Not excited I have to put in more time figuring this out and researching it. It shouldnt be this hard. But okay.
  • I hate this 1/5

My daughter got a chrome book today. This app does nothing. Things she should be able to access, she can’t. This is ridiculous.
  • Garbage 1/5

    By Eagles25Fly43
Set up one account which seemed simple. New chrome books and when adding the second account, ran into so much trouble. Asked me to download “family link for children & teens” on child’s device. This app does not even exist. Wanted me to put in codes where an option was not even present. Complete pain in the buttocks!

    By Scott e28
Although the idea is nice. Please let me set up a chromebook for my son. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. I should have gone apple. It is like 1985, 1999 and 2008 when apple made things easy and google just complicates things.

  • Unintuitive 3/5

    By Techy Pops
Bought a Chromebook for my son for Christmas. Created a child account for him - that’s a good idea. Logged in as him eventually, had to install Google Link app - seems like a good idea. Can’t open YouTube while signed in as him. There is no way to unlock it, that I can find anyways. Very frustrating. Seems like something that was designed for Android, but was just pushed to Chrome OS.
  • Excelente 5/5

I just downloaded this app for my daughter and I, and not even finished setting it up before it’s giving me an error message that keeps saying “currently offline” it’s definitely not my internet!!
