Google Family Link for parents App

Whether your children are younger or in their teens, the Family Link app lets you set digital ground rules to help guide them as they learn, play, and explore online. For children under 13 (or the applicable age of consent in your country), Family Link also lets you create a Google Account for your child that's like your account, with access to most Google services. You can: Guide them to good content • View their activity - Not all screen time is the same. Help your child make healthy decisions about what they do on their Android device, with activity reports showing how much time they’re spending on their favorite apps. • Manage their apps - Handy notifications let you approve or block apps your child wants to download from the Google Play Store. You can also manage in-app purchases, and hide specific apps on their device. • Feed their curiosity - It can be hard to figure out what apps are right for your child, so Family Link shows you teacher-recommended apps on Android that you can add directly to their device. Keep an eye on screen time • Set limits - It’s up to you to decide the right amount of screen time for your child. Family Link lets you set time limits and a bedtime for their supervised devices, so you can help them find a good balance. • Lock their device - Whether it’s time to go play outside, have dinner, or just spend time together, you can remotely lock a supervised device whenever it’s time to take a break. See where they are • It’s helpful to be able to find your child when they’re on the go. You can use Family Link to help locate them as long as they’re carrying their Android devices. Important Information • Family Link’s tools vary depending on your child’s device. See a list of compatible devices at • While Family Link helps you manage your child's purchases and downloads from Google Play, they will not need approval to install app updates (including updates that expand permissions), apps you have previously approved, or apps that have been shared in Family Library. Parents should regularly review their child’s installed apps and app permissions in Family Link. • You should carefully review the apps on your child’s supervised device and disable those you don’t want them to use. Note that you may not be able to disable some pre-installed apps. • To see the location of your child or teen’s device, it must be powered on, recently active, and connected to the internet. • Teacher-recommended apps are only available on Android devices in the US to parents of children of certain ages.

I need someone to contact me ASAP. Your app locked my kid’s phone up. I have tried everything and nothing I do is working!!! You need to update your app with a warning pop up to “not delete your kid’s account until you sign them out of google account on their phone” for us new people to your app!!!!
  • No more screen time fights 5/5

    By Kim Says
This is exactly what we needed. Son is doing his homework again and his chores, once done I can open up his device. Some apps can always be on, which has improved his studying. Bedtime is not a hassle anymore because the device turns off, and he knows that now. Works fine for us and looking forward to your improvements.
  • Before downloading you need to know 1/5

    By isabella183773929
Before downloading you need to know that the actually individual google accounts of family members will be DELETED once you need to remove each member from this monitoring app. So one should ONLY ADD email accounts that they DO NOT plan on keeping in the future for their children.
  • This thing is awful! 1/5

    By Geekkitty
I'm a tech savvy person, and this thing was complicated for me to set up. Once it was set up I discovered that it won't manage screen time on my kid's Chromebook. So frustrating. Now I'm back to square one looking for the best way to limit time on her device.
  • Love it!!! 5/5

  • Only for Android 1/5

    By Rokyla83
As a parent I can download the app. On the child’s phone you have to have android, there is no app for children on IPhone, why only create half the capability???
  • Complicated 1/5

Very complicated. I’m still working on trying to figure it out
  • Extremely disappointing 1/5

Can’t believe that Google is not able to produce a parental control app that actually works?!? Poor design and overall poor implementation. So my kid is considered an adult at age 13 is somehow exempt from parental controls once they turn 13 !?!

My son signed in on one of his phone and it asked for . Access code and they kept saying wrong code. Support gave me numerous calls and none of them work and my option only option was to reset my sons phone which means he would lose everything. Ridiculous

  • Have had this app for 2 years now 3/5

I’ve used Family Link for 2 years now and there are some obvious points that need immediate rectification. The features that are useful are absolutely worth it. Let me start with when we first got these phones for our blended family, our two 8 year olds were given Moto E4’s. The first gripe with this is that you can only add 2 administrators to the account. I think it’s extremely archaic to assume that children don’t have step-parents that also need access to controls. Because of this rule, my husband and his ex monitor my step daughter’s account (which I pay for). I solely monitor my daughter’s account. My husband cannot also be on my daughter’s account because he is an administrator on my step-daughter’s account. Confusing right? How do I approve things or change settings on my step daughter’s phone when my husband is gone and she is in my care? I can’t unless my husband leaves his phone with me. Dumb, right? How does he manage my daughter’s account? He can’t. Stupid stupid stupid. It’s not 1950 Google!!! People have complicated family ties that operate on different dynamics. Why is that so hard to accommodate? Also, if my children didn’t have different households to go back and forth to, they wouldn’t need phones and therefore there wouldn’t be a need for this software. I’m not entirely sure Google understands their demographic here. I would like to see Family Link allow as many parents are required AND be able to only allow parental settings for certain children. My second issue is the age. Age 13 means complete unbridled phone freedom? Hahahaha! Are there any parents on the team that developed this? Issue #3: I can track my child’s real-time location, but why doesn’t it show me their daily and weekly location log? I can track where I’ve been on google maps, but family link doesn’t offer the same to parents of their children? Believe it or not, I do want to see and know where my child was when they weren’t with me. Issue but not such a big issue #4: I wish there were a feature that blocked any numbers not saved as a contact from calling and texting. Who exactly needs to call my child that doesn’t have my number? No one! I want to approve or deny everyone that contacts my children. One more thing I’d like to see: an additional time where you can block children’s phone use other than just bedtime. What I do like: •daily limits and the limit layout is terrific. •I can shut their phone down whenever I want regardless of limits •I can change limits at anytime •The kids cannot do anything outside of the controls •No scary things popping up on their phone. I’ve had some scary things happen to my kids’ tablets even though they had other parental software installed. •They can’t download ANYTHING without parental consent •All website require authorization (which can also be retracted).
  • Don’t do it! 1/5

    By Her doc
If I could give this zero stars I would. I set this up so that my teen could not use his chrome book at school to goof around during class. Instead he now can’t get into his laptop at home to do research online. I never said I wanted to control all his devices, just the computer he uses at school. And when I told customer support this, they said “it’s in the terms and conditions that it will affect anything they use this google account on”. Right - as if any human could read all that. I thought google had smart programmers, but I don’t think so any more.

Why can’t I block all downloads on my children’s phone ? To have them request before downloading? I have an iPhone they have androids
  • Does what I need it too. 5/5

Ok so I’ve used this app for right over a year now. My child is 10 now, but her dad is in another state and it was a huge piece of mind knowing where she is at all times. I love that I can ground her from apps and data, but still call her and she call me. The lock on demand is really helpful when the tween attitude is in full force. Setting a different time for lock and unlock every day is a great option, as well as different time limits for each day of the week. If you’re reading this and considering using this app, here are my most important suggestions. Lie about your child’s age. NO 13 Year old needs a full blown phone. (I set my child so hers would unlock at 16, but I may change it again). Set it to where they have to ask for EVERY SINGLE WEBSITE. In my opinion, kids don’t need to use the internet browser on their phone. They have plenty of apps right??? Take control of your child’s device and use this app. It will be worth it in the end. ❤️❤️

This is crap. It shouldn’t be this hard.
  • Worked for awhile 2/5

    By Bubblesmama
I liked this app, until it some of the features stopped working. I tried everything their tech support said and nothing worked. I am disappointed because I used this to keep an eye on my kids phone use and location. It did help me find my child when they got in a car wreck and didn't know where they were but now it isn't connecting to my kids phones.
  • Stopped Working 1/5

Worked fine for a long time, now it keeps crashing on my child’s phone. I can’t give him his phone back until I find something that works. I’ve wasted so much time trying to fix it. So disappointing.

I love this app! I know what apps my daughter is using too much, where she is if she’s with friends. But, I wish I could put a timer on the apps she uses too much of.

For the life of me I can’t figure out how to get this to work with Google Home. Google as usual has horrible instructions.
  • Great, but needs options when phone locked!! 2/5

    By MStimmel
I would give this app 5 stars. I changed my kids birth year, to accommodate my older kids. I still want to be able to see what my 14 year-old is doing. That’s my right and to keep them safe. That aside, everything works awesome! Love that when they should be studying I can take the distraction away. However, if they’ve gone over their screen time allowance and the phone is locked it’s now just a glorified paper weight. There is no option for them to contact me or family in case of an emergency or other reasons?!?! The app locks the phone but won’t allow contact to anyone I designate. Needs updated!!!
  • Best internet and device limiting/monitoring app 5/5

    By us3suprheros
The best internet and device limiting app/monitoring for the price. I live that I can turn off access from my phone. See what the kids spend their time on and block specific apps.
  • App deleted my pic why? 4/5

I had a picture on here and somehow it’s gone tried adding another but the app won’t let me, other then that the app does what it’s supposed to do
  • Parent 5/5

Very good for kids and supervising your child websites apps everything monitors the use and Where the phone is located
  • Completely useless 1/5

    By gthornock
My kids all have gsuite accounts on a family domain. Apparently that means their accounts can't be managed with this tool... All I'm looking for is a "simple" parental controls app like the one on my Mac, for my Chromebook. Is that so much to ask? (Apparently it is...)
  • Keeps Crashing 1/5

    By Jobe27
This worked great since this christmas but it keeps saying I need to add both of my kid’s accounts again. It took me 2 hours to get it set up again and then a day later they were erased again. Now I can’t even sign them in. It just sits there on the “Checking Info” page. Now we can’t even get into the google store. Totally useless and now it looks like I will have to reset both devices.

Can’t upload a picture for some reason it deleted and now I can’t put another up. Even after numerous restarts to the phone and removing the app. Frustrating. Her dad is an authorized manager his phone shows a picture of her but my iPhone does not. Plz fix.

No se puede usar en iPhone páralos niños solo parents
  • Horrible 1/5

    By Gambfam
This app is horrible. It doesn’t allow me to change settings as the parent who set up account. I can’t add apps that I approve for my child to be able to use. Which I thought I was able to do this. Try to get help and have to keep backing out of the chat and going back I. To see new messages. App is a huge waste of time and makes it frustrating that you can’t control the things your child does. Now I will delete it and have to reset their phones as the app will lock the phone from being used just because the app is no longer there. Useless........

I would give it 4 Stars if it had the option to Add Time. Sometimes I use it as a form of reward. If my son cleans his room he can get an extra 30 min etc.

Horrible app, basically made my child’s phone unusable and worthless, how can an app take complete control of a phone without any way of unlocking it without jumping through hoops and sloppy programming/setup
  • Can’t get in it 1/5

Set up my child and agreed to family link. Now I can set up his email on my phone.
  • Bad app, nonexistent support, limited family management 1/5

    By TempTag
There is no way to manage a preexisting account without an Android device - but that device cannot be a 2 in 1 chromebook - huh? I thought Apple’s family management was poor but it’s far better than this useless app. I tried to contact support, but phone support does not call back, and chat support is laughably bad. The app does not fill an iPad screen so typing was slow and it still felt like a one-sided chat waiting minutes for simple chat responses. I assumed I was dealing with bad automated chat support until the misspellings gave away that I was dealing with a human. I tried to escalate but the “support” rep disconnected the chat. End result no Google play on my kids chromebook - at least the iPads all continue to work as expected!
