The app was great the previous summer that I used it. But I just started trying to use it again and everytime I open it, it shows the HBO NOW screen and then sends me to a black screen that won’t go away. Tried deleting it and re-downloading it and same result. Read the other reviews and seems like the app has been awful for a while now. I wouldn’t recommend it. App Developers don’t seem like they care to fix it.

The app took $14.99 that I had in my account which was fine until it says i don't have a subscription even though i payed for one. Absolutely horrible, lost my money & didn’t even get what I “paid” for.

I signed up for the one month free trial because most of the shows I watch are on HBO. The content has always been what made HBO stand out. The service is awful when used through the HBO NOW app.
Using this app is like being transported back to the 90s with screeching dial-up modems and waiting forever for an image to load. Except in this case it’s the app, which only allows you to watch content in 5 second bursts. Watch 5 seconds, buffer for 5 seconds, rinse and repeat.
I won’t be renewing HBO NOW if it continues to be unwatchable.

USER BEWARE: This app will keep charging you for subscriptions YOU DO NOT HAVE I downloaded this and signed up for the free trial. I was charge 14.99 though and yet was not able to watch anything. Every time I try to watch, it says you don't have an active subscription, please purchase one. so I click on Buy, it charges me and then again says you don't have an active subscription. I tried on a different IPad with a different email and SAME THING. I guess HBO is really doing poorly in life if this is their new way to generate revenue.

I’ve been using this app for well over a year, holding out for an update that will fix its issues. I’ve used it on iPad, iPhone (6S, 8+, and X), and Apple TV. I am completely confident in stating this is the worst streaming app I’ve ever used. This is my only streaming service that can’t make it through an episode of a show without stopping to buffer. Sometimes it’ll let me get through half the episode, then it’ll stop about every 30 seconds for the second half. It consistently takes over 2 hours to watch a 1-hour episode. I can’t take it anymore. My 2 favorite shows, Game of Thrones and Westworld, aren’t even worth it. I will be ending my HBO subscription because I can’t even watch one episode of a show. It’s so disgusting that HBO is the most expensive streaming service and can’t even have a functional app.

Every time I load this app it freezing iPad. I close all other apps running and this will still malfunction and freeze it. I know it’s not my tablet as everything else is fine and the tablet is a newer model. I hate having to restart my iPad every time I’ve tried using this app.

I’m a computer engineer. I spent 30 min trying to figure out how to tie my existing Amazon subscription to my old HBO Now account. Their app gives little help, and the UX make little sense. Why would I want to create a new account to hook my Amazon subscription to if I’m already logged in...? I ended up giving up on integrating my accounts.

To begin, HBO is largely responsible for the golden age of TV and it has always shown with their top-tier content. But what is HBONow without those 5-7 shows you always come back to and the random New Release movie you *might* stumble upon once a month? Not much, tbh. I want to respectfully ask that you evolve and shake things up a little. All your competitors have snappy responsive apps that don’t feel 10 years old. Something about this one just Clunks, plods, and hiccups far more than it should.
First - why is it called “Now”? Other than GOT, what shows have I watched air live? I can’t remember... any. Not only is consistently failing to view Live programs a puzzling experience for an app called “Now”, but I have coworkers who stream illegally and see episodes of HBO shows 1-2 days before my legal and fully paid version of their official app has it uploaded. What the..? I.e. Bill Maher airs on Friday nights and I can’t find it til Saturday afternoon or evening, sometimes Sunday...
Secondly, it’s like they slow down the loading time for loyal customers - increasingly the longer you’re subscribed. Do you pinch bandwidth and offer it up to new/trial customers? I remember it used to blaze, now it always always takes a full 8-10 seconds or more to get past a pitch-black loading screen. And many titles don’t load their posters. Each section of the site seems to never be cached..
Having said that, I feel like HBO Now drops/pauses streaming a good deal less than the other guys. 👍
Finally, the movie selection. Pretty much on par with basic cable, and that’s really sad. The competitors seem like there’s always going to be some movie to watch if you just have patience. But Dipping into the movie section of HBO Now is just depressing. Totally forgettable 80s-90s action/drama movie after the other. Just endless scrolling - “Nope, nope, never, never, never ever, wow that actor hasn’t appeared anywhere but here in 30 years and he’s in 10 of them.... ...nope, nope, ...”
I only got it for GOT S7, so the stretch from now til 2019 seems like a waste. Hoping for some major update or a Eureka moment and if not, probably shutting down shop till S8 (7.5??). Which is too bad, cause I like HBO programming and what they did for entertainment. I just wish they’d... uh.. get some app design inspiration, or some better deals with movie studios...Some TLC essentially.
Now having ranted, I’m going to watch tonight’s S2 Westworld premiere (if it’s uploaded!) - so thanks for that - I hope...

If I’m subscribing with my Apple ID for my Apple devices, I don’t see the need to have to create yet another account and password for HBO so that they can track me and my devices. That defeats the point of Apple creating subscriber IDs which protects my privacy. I wanted to pay HBO but they got greedy about collecting my information. I’ll get my streams elsewhere.

Should be called HBO LATER since I have to log in and re-log in and then search for the episode I JUST paused and then watch previews...holy smokes...this is the worst app I’ve ever had the misfortune to encounter!! HBO: PLEASE give me a way to find the episode I left off on without having to search for it!! For the money you spend on this app, it is extremely aggravating. I think I am about done if improvements aren’t made soon. And why do I have to constantly log in?!

Very disappointed.. was looking forward to watching several favorite shows on here, we spent 30 minutes trying to watch 8 Min of a show because it stopped to buffer so many times. Some days it just wouldn’t work all together. Some days it would only play audio. I hung in there for two months, continuing to pay $15 a month, and we’ve only made it through 4 episodes. Now, I’m done. Unbelievably frustrating.

Had a problem when I signed up with my HULU account. Customer service fixed my account, they said my email address ended in .con instead of .com, which is strange since initially signed up /sign in through HULU. Which automatically imported my login info. But anyway seems to be working now! Just in time for Westworld season 2?

It cast great to my tv and streams really well. But way to many previews, even between episodes of a series. It drives me nuts. Also the app isn’t nearly as user friendly as Netflix. The “resume watching” feature doesn’t work well and doesn’t always remember what episode I last watched. Hopefully they continue to improve it.

I’ve had this app for two months. I play a movie and into the movie it stops to load and that’s every time with any movie that I watch. I chrome cast the app to my tv it does the same thing. I watch the hBO app from my PlayStation 4 and the same thing happens. This problem need to be fixed or I’m canceling my subscription with HBO

The app works well enough, however the grey letterboxing and pillarboxing ruin it. It’s jarring to have a really dark scene surrounded by grey bars. It would look much better being black.

HBO edits the aspect ratio of the films it streams to fullscreen. They charge premium rates but omit 20% of the film.

No me gusto para nada la aplicación ya que no puedes seleccionar el idioma en el que quieres ver tu programa favorito, no es posible que pagues una subscripción en otro lado y si te vas la posibilidad de poner tus programas en español, y esta que es la aplicación oficial de HBO no puedas hacerlo... es bastante decepcionante... ahh y sin mencionar que por ejemplo pones el programa en tu smartTV y ni siquiera lo puedes ver en alta definición como en Netflix por ejemplo que te da 4K en algunos programas...

Updated 2018-04-10: HBO app and streaming quality is much better now. It is still not a Netflix, but much better than it was few month ago. Hopefully they will add 4k/7.1 option as it is still HD/stereo.
Content is great but streaming quality is bad. There is no 4k or surround sound (standard HD with stereo). Stream is unstable and often stops even on 100 MB connection. I tried reinstalling, restarting but nothing helps. Both Netflix and youtube work flawlessly on the same device/connection. The quality is not consistent across different platforms (e.g. iPhone app is somewhat usable, while ps4 is not).
Content is organized in random order. I only care about few shows and watch them regularly, but i still have to search to find them every single time i open the app.
Please show series that I watched before, newly added content and older content which might be interesting based on my streaming history (in that order!).

I was highly disappointed with this app. I have an iPhone X and I could not get passed the “new subscription” page no matter what. Tried someone else’s email same problem. I wasn’t sure what it could be so I finally bought a whole new subscription - thinking it was a problem on my end. Nope! Still doesn’t work. I have not been able to see GOT. For a name as big as HBO to put out such a product that doesn’t work, I’m baffled.

Non-stop password request 1/5
I used to use this app a lot several months ago. I never seemed to have streaming problems like other people are reporting. In general, the app worked fine. In the past few months I've been watching other things on Hulu and Netflix. However, I recently came back to this app to find that the latest version has completely broken the password retaining feature. Every time I open the app it requires me to reenter the password. This was never the case before. Even worse, the small white modal password box fails even when given the correct password. To work around this, I have to go into settings and logout and then log back in before I can use the app. This is getting really annoying, especially for something that I'm paying for every month.

I am apprehensive about using this service due to the many negative complaints.
Therefore I have two thoughts on this:
ONE, when you advertise your app. as being free do not require holding our charge cards hostage during the free period, and having the burden of cancellation put on the consumer.
FREE means FREE, without obligations or conditions. Else wise remove the word FREE.
That would be UP FRONT AND HONEST.
TWO, as you all know a cellphone use to be just that, a portable phone ☎️ period.
Not so now days, they are actually micro computers. Making a phone call is now the least of a cellphone’s ability.
Technology progresses by leaps and bounds some times every 5 years. So looking at the many problems at times with applications, I wonder if most of us are keeping our phones up to date.
Or, are some of us holding on to that old phone expecting it to perform to today’s standard applications. Their is a reason why some phones are cheap and a reason why some phones are more expensive and it is not just about making as much money as possible; sometimes this cost directly reflects how effective a phone is in operation and processing.
And, may be I am wrong. But architecture, hardware, design, processing, software, and certainly customer support are a big part of these little miracles we hold in our hands. Quite a lot of things to go wrong.

This isn't a 5 star app by any means. Its basic features with amazing content.
I was able to sign up and get the free trial instantly and immediately was able to log in on my Nvidia shield. 0 problems. I could even use both devices at once, watching on my iPhone and shield.
Some improvements needed is a subscribe function! I see it suggested constantly on this and hbo go. I want to subscribe to my shows I watch and have them all out into a list automatically. Then I have a central place to view all the newly aired, unmatched episodes.
We need a Playlist function too or favorites.
My 4 stars is heavily weighed on the great content and that the apps plays Mt videos. The loss of a star is because watchlist is unusable and because I haven't seen a new feature in years.

- CC settings are not saved for the next video I watch like it is on Netflix. There's nothing in settings where I can make it default to leave CC on/off.
- While scrolling, if you accidentally touched a show it just starts the new show. On Netflix, you have to touch the play icon which is really good to have rather than accidentally start a different show
- There's no way to skip the credits and move on to next episode
- The seek bar is difficult as it's not judging where my finger is moving.. I have to move my finger a bit higher than the seek bar
- seek time is bad. Takes forever to load from a particular point. Netflix is much faster.
- Only good thing is that it syncs much better than Netflix with chromecast.

This is the only video streaming app that I have ever seen that does not have a recently viewed playlist. When you begin a movie or tv show and exit the app, it does not save the time on the video so you have to manually fast forward to the point where you were. It also does not save what movie or show you are currently in the middle of so you have to manually find the movie or show every time you open the app. At first it wasn’t too bothersome, but after watching a full season (not even on to season 2 yet) on the app, it is really annoying. If they do not change the app so it is more user friendly, I will be cancelling the subscription because $15 a month is ridiculous when you have to deal with so many inconvenient problems. I hope they do something soon but I doubt it considering how low the app is rated so they clearly do not care about customer service.
Service marred by social engineering 2/5
It’s hard to enjoy the story and creativeness of HBO shows when there’s a social statement being made in every scene and by the specific actors and their roles. Seriously, I enjoy the stories and depth of the shows I’ve watched, but it’s distracting when I’m aware that my perceptions are trying to be influenced outside the purpose for the narrative’s message. This is what separates the good from the great. Stories laden with ideological subtleties meant to tweak the perceptions of viewers will never be great. Otherwise I’d love to stick around, keep my subscription.
Remember favorite shows and no back button 1/5
I am using the app mainly to watch vice news and it never is suggested as one of the shows to watch. Why? I always have to search for it.
And now I don’t even have a back button to go back to all of vice news while watching one episode. It used to be on the top left.

Can’t even pause and replay when you need to visit the fridge for two minutes.. Freezes often, periodic static over HDMI adapter.. keeps prompting asking for my Apple ID..
This app is complete garbage. The fact that someone at HBO signed off on this offends me as a consumer. I even tried to register for a subscription and the app turned me away multiple times.
