Open Files Doesn't Work 2/5
Opening files doesn't work. This is all I wanted the app for
System Not Compatible 2/5
Looks like it could be a good app, but I tried to load Xffinity Stream and it gave me an error message saying "Your System isn't compatible with Xfinity Stream"
The message says supported browers are Chrome 75 , Firefox 68 Edge 17 and Safari 11 . I can only assume Helium doesn't emulate any of those,
I FREAKING LOVE THIS! 5/5
I love Apple. I really do. But sometimes they think they know SO much better than you what you want and need. Apple has specifically removed "Always on Top" as a system feature, and it has disappeared from browsers like Chrome that used to support it. They did so in order to avoid "unexpected behaviors". I get that they don't like that, buy I'M THE END USER! So let ME decide which unexpected behaviors I'm willing to tolerate when I need functionality like this. Give us a pop-up warning us that turning on "Always on Top" could cause these behaviors and let me get back to work!
This app works GREAT! It does exactly what I need. Could there be more bells and whistles? Sure. But it's free, so I'm perfectly content with this. THANK YOU for this! I'm an aspiring iOS app developer, and I need tutorials while I'm learning. I'm also an online college student, so I need browser windows showing me information while I'm watching a lecture or writing a paper. To CONSTANTLY be switching between windows when I could just have Helium at 60% transparency letting me see what I need, how I need it... just, thank you!
The best app exactly what I'm looking for 5/5
Love this app 5/5
Great for watching youtube. It would be amazing if there was an option to have the title bar and any borders or shadows on the window disappear completely
ALMOST Perfect 4/5
I love this app. It does exactly what it advertises and is so much more helpful than I expected. As a distractable college student, Helium is a lifesaver.
The only thing that would make this app better is if there was a way to pin it/minimize it to the menu bar. That would a. make it much more convienant to use and find, and b. would keep out of the way of other open apps on the dock. It just makes more sense to me to keep it on the menu bar.
If that was an option that was added, then this app would be perfect.
Not Work!!! 1/5
Does not work on Hulu 4/5
beside that it's all good
Great at what it does, want it to do more. 4/5
First of all, if you're looking for this app, you'll probably end up loving it. Adjusting translucency is easy, and there are shortcuts for everything
Things that could make me love the app more:
1) When using cmd L to enter a URL, it would be nice if the typing cursor was automatically placed in the url bar.
2) I cannot seem to get this app to open a jpg, and i imagine there are some other common files it cannot open. If helium could do this, it would nearly be a full browser. Would be awesome for holding up a screenshot of notes translucent over another program
Supper Dupper App 5/5
Thanks a lot very help full app :)
I wish it worked with plex! Its an awesome utility but i cant watch all my stuff with it!
Great Utility 3/5
By Anthony Honciano
It's awesome, and does the job. Just a couple weird things about it:
1. Getting used to the app focus is weird. If I click on the window, the menus doesn't change at the top. It stays on the current app you have focus on. No biggie, just weird.
2. When you do command L for location, the text field is not reacuable by keyboard tab. I have to mouse over to enter the URL.
3. I read somewhere you can watch Hulu and Netflix with this. That doesn't work for me, mostly just YouTube free videos. However I can't watch any paid videos either.
Other than that, great free app!
Doesn't work 1/5
Tried to load smail videos on my local hard drive. It stopped at loading 10.0%.
Works as expected 5/5
By Artur Ohanesian
No lags or bags, works smoothly. Support different file types and web-sites
Doesn't work with Google Meet/Hangouts 2/5
Google servers dont recognize this app as a supported browser and so it wont let you use video hangouts in this app. I am in video chats throughout my work day and really wanted something that would let me keep the video window on top of all others
Really love it but there are a couple things I would love to be changed 5/5
Once again, does exactly what it says it does so if you are looking to have a PiP like experiance for twitch or netflix, look no further. I would however like to see the location text field activate when I hit (CMD L) right now, when I do that I have to mouse over to the text field, click in it and then past my link. Second, it would be awesome to see the title bar at the top of the window go away. Once again, awesome app and thank you!
Learning AutoCAD, THANK YOU!!! 5/5
By Eric accept my nickname
Trying to learn AutoCAD with YouTube tutorials. Now I can follow along without having to jump windows all the time. Thank you! I wish I knew about this when I was trying to learn Photoshop, Logic, FinalCut, etc.
una exelente aplicacion para mac 5/5
me encanto esta aplicacion la recomiendo
Exactly What I. needed 5/5
Thanks for this
How to use it?? 1/5
Opens with: "Navigate to a webpage using the Location menu in the menubar." What's that supposed to mean? No instructions, no home page, nothing!
A little buggy 3/5
Would like an option to allow mouse clicks and scrolling with translucency enabled.
PLEASE CREATE AN UPDATE 3/5
I CAN’T WATCH HULU ON IT BECAUSE THIS APP IS TOO OUTDATED AND IT DOESN’T SUPPORT IT. HELIUM WAS PERFECT UNTIL THIS STARTED HAPPENING
Best decision ever. Has changed the way I worked and I didn’t know it.
Does as it says.
What is great about it is that It’s helped me monitor chat rooms on livestreams better without the inconvenience of either the broadcasted video and the chat pane getting in the way one another.
But without a working “open file” feature right now, it brings the app to a hit-and-miss.
Also, for a suggestion, as an alternative method for certain Mac users, bring the menubar features down to the dock icon’s context menu. Alt-clicking and seeing the options there would be just as nice and quick to access especially if you’re running multiple tasks on different desktop screens and are not familiar with keyboard shortcuts (just yet).
Needs an update.... Your browser isn't supported :( 4/5
This is great! I haven't found anything as useful as this app, thank you! But I'm starting to get errors from some sites like Youtube Gaming. ("Your browser isn't supported :( YouTube Gaming requires a browser which supports modern web standards.").
Can we get an update to the app to keep it up to par with modern browsers please?
Youtube videos now have error message when opened in Helium 2/5
I keep having the message, “This video contains content from SME. It is restricted from playback on certain sites or applications,” show up when I play any videos from Youtube. The videos were playing yesterday with no trouble on Helium...
Netflix doesn’t work 2/5
Always gives an error. All I’d use this for is watching Netflix while I work. Going to find an alternative.

App is broken. Can’t open local files, URLs never load. I come out of my 8 years of app store silence to say: DON’T INSTALL!
This is so much better than safari PIP. Thank you!
Amazing idea, no longer works 3/5
This app is amazing as an artist to keep references floating above my work station in Photoshop.
However, I just now tried to use it again and both files and web URLs are not working. The app remains a blank white space. There’s no error messages or any other indication that things are loading or not working or whatever. I have Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6, and I’m not prompted for any updates.
Hopefully this will work again soon because as an artist it’s been an invaluable tool for having references on hand. Thanks.
Good but quality low 4/5
This applicaiton is really well made and working so well. My only gripe is that the stream quality while using this on Watch ESPN is kinda low. Haven’t tried it with other sites yet but for ESPN its a bit pixelated.
Very good app, but.. 4/5
Very good app, but the file feature isn’t working. If the file feature worked, undoubtedly, it’d be one of the best apps and a must-have app for Macs.
Doesn’t seem to work in macOS Sierra 2/5
A window opens, but there seems to be no way to start a video, or no settings.
Doesn’t handle popups 3/5
I needed to use this for a page I could only get to through clicking a link on another page, and couldn’t type in the address to get to directly. Instead of allowing a second window to pop up, or replacing the main window with the new popup, it just did nothing. I’ll keep it installed in case I need a window to stay on top, but for what I needed it for now, it didn’t help me. Otherwise seems to work fine.
Excellent for webpage, BUT... 4/5
2.0 works great for viewing web video (e.g. DirecTV biz programs). It would be nice to have a history of recently viewed links from which to select. The most glaring issue is that the Open File does not appear to work. I hope this can be addressed in the next release which, BTW, when might that be?
2.0 broke this app. 1/5
Since 2.0 many standard video formats are not loading what-so-ever in Helium.
Until whomever released this cares enough to revert or fix this I will have to find an alternative.
So Close to Perfect… CMD+L… 4/5
So close to a perfect app! Apple teased us with PIP in macOS that never came to fruition… and here Helium fills the void (and does it well! The only (and I mean ONLY) thing I would add is that when you press CMD+L to enter in a URL, that the cursor already be in that spot so you can just paste in the website that you probably already have copied to your clipboard. Thanks for a great app!
Not much use if the stated purpose for the App does not even function! Download did not allow any playback of any type! Nadda on the help file. Last software update over a year ago
Wow, it doesnt work 1/5
I downloaded the 2.0 version and unfortunately, it does not work. I tried using several different video configurations, and there was no luck. Even the weblink access did not work. Too bad, seemed like a great app.
Very helpful. Wish it had an ad blocker. 5/5
I used to use Afloat, but having to get SIMBL and Afloat working again after every OS upgrade when they are no longer really supported became a headache. I love Helium's minimalist interface, how it does just what it's supposed to, and how it installs and updates from the App Store.
Only have a couple suggestions based on my use:
- Clicking on the app window does not bring up the app's menu in the menu bar. You have to switch to it using Command + Tab.
- When choosing "Open Web URL..." in the menu, the app does not put the cursor focus in the text input that appears. You have to click in the input to focus on it.
- Wish there was a way to integrate an ad blocker somehow.
why isnt this product useful 1/5
By Master Briar
This product does not work on a 27 inch iMac… The window is smaller than my iPhone, now ay to expand it, no way to get to the login info section of the displayed page… what a waste of time ...
Yep, the “Open File” feature is broken in 2.0. I use this exclusively for watching tutorials launched from on my computer (not from the web), so Helium drops from “excellent” to “useless” with that single glitch. I loved the program for its ability to go back a few seconds in the movie (for review) with a single click, a feature that (the much smoother working) Fluid Browser doesn’t have. YET. But Fluid Browser’s my choice now, with lamentations for Helium’s broken functionality.
This is so simple and so brilliant 5/5
By Sergiu Dogaru
Thanks! It’s unbelievable how hard it is to find an app that does anything so well! Works with Netflix, and I plan on trying it with Amazon Video as well.
GREAT APP!!! But… I kinda would like to see a couple other features. 4/5
This app saves me. I love being able to keep up with a news livestream, or sports livestream while dealing with emails or working on homework. It’s really a nifty app. THough I’d love to have app specific volume control (rather than just muting my whole computer) and I’d love to be able to have more than one video playing.
File feature doesn’t work 3/5
The app itself is great, but the ability to open files does not work. I click the open file button, choose my video, and nothing loads (the web feature still works). There’s a lot of times when I need to look at videos I have downloaded, so fixing this bug would be nice.
Great app if you do not have a 27 inch Mac. 5/5
The thought of this application is great. I just find it useless because I am on the iMac 5K 27inch (Late 2015). It just seems pointless since I have so much space on my screen for other applciations like Netflix.
I would say this app is great to use if you have a 13 or 15 inch MacBook.
This app still deserves the 5 stars.
Amazing, a couple of things 3/5
I want to start by saying I LOVE this app. I never knew I needed something like this so thank you for making it. It would be easier if when I clicked on the window to select the app to, for example, then use the spacebar to puase what’s playing, that it would select it. As it stands now I usually have to click on the icon on the Dock to get it to select the window. Additionally, many times when using Netflix I get an error on Netflix to reload the page and try again. This may not be the fault of the app, but something with Netflix that dooesn’t like the app.
Thank you again for this amazing app!
