I was a French major in college and used DuoLingo for a long time. This app is superior- more fun and intuitive.
Great design! It makes the learning fun. 5/5
Try it; It’s laid out very well to make learning a language easy.
Not for free members 2/5
The app is nice but I cannot go more than Level 2 unless I pay for Pro. It’s just ridiculous?
Its great 5/5
This app makes learning spanish so much fun I don’t want to stop learning.

GREAT APP FOR STUDYING
Worth my time 5/5
This app is worth it...despite some bugs (wrong audio with written word)...it is rare to find good lessons in Persian and this app had them. The methodology used in the formula for studying has greatly helped me memorize many new words! I know I’ll reach my goals sooner with Memrise!!
This app wow 5/5
This app is really helping me
Japanese 1 is okay but needs a lot of work 2/5
By Lector Scribe
I picked this over Human Japanese on the advice of a friend who speaks a lot of Japanese. He said this app was better. I’m at the end of
Japanese 1 and I’m very disappointed in it. This is my review of that lesson.
The positives are that it introduces some kanji and all the kana. That’s helpful. I like learning greetings and food words because those are also useful. The paces review is helpful and I like the audio clips.
That said, there are a lot of problems with the app.
First, the hiragana introduction can be helpful but i already know hiragana. So that’s frustrating to keep getting drilled on them.
Second, the multiple choice questions aren’t well thought out, and the answers seem entirely random. You’ll get questions where the audio cue will be something like “cheese” and multiple options will be words you haven’t even learned yet. Some will even be complete phrases like “Mr. Yamato, are you hungry?” which are easy to work out by process of elimination. It would be helpful if the answers could at least require me to try to recall what I learned. The
Third, the app has too many loan words that Japanese borrows from English. I don’t need to be drilled over and over again on spaghetti and restaurant.
Fourth, I wonder how much thought went into some of these questions. Many of them seem algorithmically created because they’re silly. One type is a recording of a speaker saying a Japanese syllable, like “ta,” and asking you to pick the correct Roman characters. What does that test? I know how to write that in English. It is useful to hear a syllable and have to pick the correct hiragana, or to see a Roman syllable and have to pick the correct hiragana. Those kinds of questions exist, but I wonder if an algorithm somewhere mixed and matched answers for the “hear an audio clip and pick the hiragana” question and “see a syllable in English and pick the right hiragana” questions.
Fifth, there needs to be a way to delete questions. Some of them are just silly. For example, “beef stew” is one I’m currently stuck on and can’t get past. I just can’t seem to memorize the right way to write that in katakana and I’m not going to spend the time on that because I don’t think it’s an important word to know. I get that word over and over again and not actually useful words like the words from the lesson on emotions.
Last, I just think the speed review is too fast. There isn’t time to read all the answers, let alone pick the right one.
Effective and stupid-easy 4/5
Great for learning new words and making them stick. The grammatical aspect isn't really coming together as well for me, but I suspect that may come best with real-world practice and I’m fine with that for now. My biggest issue after over a year of using this app is that I wish it would do a better job of recirculating words and phrases I’ve already learned. There are so many words and phrases I learned at the beginning, but I almost never see anymore and I worry about forgetting them. At least every once in a while I wish the classic review would pool randomly from my ENTIRE accumulated vocabulary rather than just what I’ve been learning most recently.

i’m learning korean and using the howtostudenykorean.com memrise and it’s so easy to memorize the words. i’ve always had a hard time sticking with duolingo and this app keeps me much more motivated!
Its actually better than I actually expected it to be! I’m learning really fast and faster than all of the other apps I’ve tried! I’m learning Chinese and now I can talk full sentences so all u can say to the creator of this app is thank you !
I love memrise 5/5
By grateful.rjs ❤️
This is a great app. I tried Duolingo and learned nothing since it just plasters all the words together and not even telling you the letters. I am now fluent in Korean thanks to Memrise

So far so good!! Hope to do better!

Great app 4/5
I would give 5 stars but the sound is a little off. The voices are soft and sometimes hard to hear but the sounds are super loud
Otherwise, excellent app
This is fun! 5/5
And I hope I am giving my brain a workout.
There isn’t enough writing 4/5
I’ve only been using it for the past few minutes and I haven’t actually had to write any characters, only how to say phrases. They add real life examples of people saying certain phrases which is amazing! If they made it so I have to draw the mandarin character on the screen a few times, that would be great! I do get to see what the character looks like so I would give this app a 4.6 rating
Awesome Language Learning App! 5/5
I’ve been learning Spanish in school and fluent in Punjabi and thought that the idea of learning a new language was so cool! Being able to speak in a language not everyone knows seems so amazing and this app is so much fun! I’ve tried apps like duo lingo and it does have the same goal and format but Memrise is truly the best fitting language app for me! You can see actual people from all over speaking the language you want to learn (I’m currently learning french!) I haven’t even gotten far enough in the app to say “this is amazing” in French but it’s absolutely awesome, it’s not constantly bugging you to download their premium version which basically upgrades to features like seeing real life lessons from people speaking the language you’re learning! Not only does it help you to speak the language but it also helps to write and memorize in the language your learning which is something I don’t see very much in other apps, I’d definitely download this app if you’re someone who wants in depth lessons on learning your preferred languages! 10/10! Au Revoir :)
Really good 5/5
Has most of the elements needed. Just have to do it. Great for using in spare time also.
This is great!!! 5/5

I so badly needed help pronouncing my French. Being able to visually see people speaking helps so much. Allows for better mouth and tongue movement. I am very pleased with how well the App works, will continue to use this one in my free time.
This app is truly amazing I’m learning Spanish so quickly and it’s helping me study before tests 5 out of 5 stars
Fix the bug pls! 1/5
Crashes when I tryna download the course
Learning Japanese 5/5
I should have listened to my Mom growing up and learning Japanese. This app brings back memories. It helps you remember. Thank you.
Getting better and better 5/5
I’ve been using Memrise for years.. I started way back when anyone could make a learning deck and almost left when they took that feature away and made it exclusively their own learning decks. And while I do wish they would in some way reincorporate that feature I am glad that I stayed (and became a pro member) because everything else they’ve done with the app keeps getting better and better. I love the new grammar learning sections so you’re actually learning grammar rules and not just memorizing vocabulary, and I really hope they expand that and add audio to it. I also really love the learning with locals sections, and I really hope they expand those as well. That’s probably the most effective thing around for hearing how a native speaker would actually say what you’re learning.
All in all, this is one of the best language learning tools out there. I would (and do) choose it over duolingo anytime (especially seeing duolingos new model). Combining memrise with something like Michel Thomas audio, some native books and movies, and an app that connects you to native speakers, and you can learn a language from scratch to fluent in 6-12 months.
Fun way to learn 4/5
I’m really enjoying this app so far. My only complaint is that I wish disabling audio didn’t automatically disable sound effects; I downloaded this to work on my Latin vocabulary, so the majority of my words have 2-4 forms to memorize, and hearing the audio every time really slows me down. But the sound effects are fun! They’re one of the things that makes this feel like a game!
Other than that I like the app. I appreciate the graphics and the way it cycles through vocabulary based on familiarity.
I used to use the app when it was free, I mean completely free and I was able to choose whatever course I want. I used to adore the app actually, and try learning everything with it, but now, all I see is that only languages are available and all the other awesome courses are gone for subscription...
This is really disappointing
I really love the program and interface 5/5
By Pastry Wizards Apprentice
I use 4 apps to learn French. DuoLingo was my first because it was free. But I was having issues with the pronunciation of words because the audio sounded muddled. So I went over to Babbel because it was also free for a streamlined language app. It wasn’t everything I wanted so I stumbled upon Memrise while looking up Rosetta Stone.
Memrise offers a yearly subscription for $29.99 which is a bargain for what you get. The pronunciation of the words are crystal clear and the interface is phenomenal! My favorite parts are the videos of native speakers saying something in French but with different context in each video. So you hear a version of “Je ne comprends pas” or “Ça Va?” And you understand it has multiple meanings and uses in the real world in regards to conversational context.
I still use Rosetta Stone, DuoLingo, and Babbel but Memrise is by far my favorite
Wish they had a one time buy option 3/5
No way to track hours tracked in a day.
ISSUE DOWNLOADING OFFLINE DECK 3/5
how come i can’t dl my decks for offline use? it keeps crashing... i’ve deleted and redownloaded the app 3 times already and it still work work... pretty frustrating!!

Fun, quick, and effective!
My new favorite 5/5
I’m almost through all the French lessons in Duolingo, but a few days of French 2 on here and I feel like I already have a better handle on pronunciation. The playback so you can hear yourself properly, and the optional repetition to get it perfect are key. And it’s just less stressful to learn!
Excellent App for learning a new language 5/5
LOOOOOVE THIS APP!
Good with memories and gives you a image to make the memorization process better
Japanese Locked After Second Level 1/5
All content after section 2 is locked, and will not let you advance unless you pay to do so. Don’t understand why this is happening, very frustrating.
Difficult Words 4/5
By satan's roommate
I’ve had this complaint for a while, and it’s concerning the difficult words. Because I get a word wrong once, does not necessarily mean I’m having a hard time getting it. For it to be considered a difficult word, I should have gotten it wrong at least two times.
Good but 5/5
By sarah i want to
They charge me to play or I cants learn anymore but it’s great
Had to do for class 5/5
Teacher made us get this and person with most points after one week gets out of a quiz. Knowing that made it hard to put down because gettin our of a quiz in college is great. Now it’s become addictive to play wanting to learn
Choose this one 5/5
I have downloaded and tried all the Spanish apps and this one is by far the best. There are several things I like about it: 1) It has lots of repetition and review of previous lessons, which is really what you need to learn a language. I have taken a Spanish class and used apps and they want to move you along so fast that you forget what you learned before. 2) The quality of the videos with local people is better and holds your attention more than any of the other apps, and gives you multiple different dialects to hear and the body language that goes along with it. This is probably the most natural way to learn other than actually being with people speaking Spanish. 3) They give you the basic meaning translation and the literal translation which I really appreciate. Even Spanish textbooks will not do this which I find frustrating. They want you to memorize the meaning without actually understanding the words you are saying. I feel if you want to understand a language you need to know exactly what you are saying. Thank you! Nobody elae does this. 4) The subscription fee is reasonable, and they don’t constantly harass you. They give you a good sample before they ask you to subscribe. There are lots of other apps that charge more and are way less quality. I am really happy I found this one.

Way better than Duolingo. I still can't believe most of the studying tools are free. I've been using this app for the past 2 years to learn Italian and my boyfriend has been using it for Spanish. He can hold conversations with my family now and I can understand almost anything in Italian.
PLEASE FIX DEAL-BREAKING BUGS 2/5
Memrise is typically great. I am a pro subscriber, so I pay $60 a year for it. But occasionally they have silly bugs that they release with updates that impact learning. For the last month, there has been an error where words are being “completed” 2-3x faster than they should, so I’m not actually getting the repetition I need to learn anything new. I’ve submitted an error request weeks ago but nothing has changed.
PLEASE FIX THIS OR REIMBURSE ME!!!!
Love it! 5/5
I love Memrise! It’s easy and fun!
Can't add user-created decks from the app 1/5
So if I want to install a user-created deck (decks created by the community are much higher quality than the official Memrise decks), I have to go to the website, on a desktop browser, and add them from there. I can't add community-made decks from the app itself. Useless.
Thank you 5/5
Love the app, actually helps you learn!!:):)
Terrible after an fantastic beginning 1/5
Many trainings have no phonetic to Chinese characters. I, to this day, do not know how to pronounce "Woman" in Chinese. I constantly get pulled back by the app to learn that word again, and it NEVER says the word in Chinese ever. This happens in a lot of sections of the app for mandarin language. If a sections works, it works 100% all the time, if it fits not work, it never works the whole section through. Not one word gets ever pronounced, thus you never know how to actually day it. It only makes the ding, bling, ring sounds when you click something, but never days a Chinese word so you know how to pronounce it!
This is highly frustrating...

in the first language learning app i used, it didn’t seem to be very effective. one of my friends recommended me memrise and learning a language seems so easy. this app has been very effective and i haven’t been using it very long. i definitely recommend this to people trying to learn new languages.
Great application 5/5
This application is really great for learners the application only has a few selected languages but you can simply add languages if you add your username and password into the website version of Memrise and you can add languages from the website into the application I have a few of Esperanto and Toki Pona And I will add more in the future
Great app , please fix grammarbot 5/5
Hell guys its a great app, but could you please fix grammarbot, its always appear in the “next up” suggestion, and I mean always nothing but grammarbot,
As well in the last update you promised to teach holiday season words, but where can I find them is it some special menu, or was not for all languages?
Thanks, its great app and you are doing great work never regret money I spent!
Thanks for getting rid of ziggy. Could you please bring back the old ranking system? I was almost a meminance, and one day wanted to be an overlord :) “level 14” just isn’t as cool/motivational.
