Months ago I loved using the memrise app on my phone but after an update I was unable to do anything other than review. If I used it on my laptop no problem, but the phone app is junk and no longer taking up space on my phone. Duolingo it is.
  • Use Duolingo or Quizlet and save your money 1/5

    By bpbatch
Memrise’s pricing scheme is an absolute joke considering there are free apps like Quizlet and Duolingo whose courses were also created but not stolen away for Memrise’s to reap profit from. The Memrise’s developers are shameful thieves and in no way should be supported, period. I beg you not to fund their practices.
  • Helpful 5/5

I am currently trying to learn Korean. It is difficult to learn. This app is extremely helpful. It is a step by step process to every word. This app is great at a beginner level.
  • What’s Up Doc 5/5

    By Grove Inn
I have loved this app since the beginning. A unique and engaging way to learn. And I need unique because this is more difficult than I thought it would be. That being said I study several other formats as well. What is up doc? These words and phrases that are being thrown at me I do t even use in English. Yes I know them, but the point is ... I do not use them. I am always behind in this app and I can’t for a moment grasp how someone using Memrise alone will learn Spanish. It’s fun yes. It’s interesting. Yes. But ... I have gone from basic skills to boardroom lingo and I will never use nor need these words. Please get back to REAL LIFE CONVERSATIONS.

  • crashes every time i try to watch a video 4/5

i love this app and i use it as much as i use duolingo, but the problem is it crashes every time i try to watch a video (the daily videos they have) and i’m not sure if it’s just my phone or an iphone problem, but otherwise it’s great!
  • Great language app! 5/5

    By Txredfelix
This is hands down the most enjoyable language learning app I’ve ever used. I really like the way the lessons are set up. For example, doesn’t make you learn all of the names of fruit in one lesson. It’s real world conversations centered around the location of the language you’re learning.

I thought this was an awesome learning app until I realized that when I’m studying my Korean I’m learning informal Korean instead of 존댓말 formal Korean

In my experience, changes made to user courses on the website do not sync to the iPad app unless you log out of the iPad app and then log back in.

In response to their reply... I have already done that (contacted you in settings... with no reply except an automated response telling me how to cancel my subscription) and it’s not a problem with a specific language. It’s all of them. The problem is the streak button. As usual. Update: So even after the update to “fix the bugs” yesterday the streak button is still broken. It shows your streak for the day being full and doesn’t go up even after you’ve met your goal for the day. It only changes as the day resets so you just have to hope you did enough to cover your goal for the day with no way of actually knowing if you did until it’s too late. The streak part has been messed up since the beginning of the year and it’s ridiculous that’s it’s not fixed yet. Duolingo isn’t having these problems. 🙄 Update: Decided to give them another chance. They screwed the pooch again. This time my streak for the day is filling when I haven’t even touched the app yet. Went from a 7 day streak yesterday to a full 9 day streak today doing nothing. When will they be able to make their OWN app work correctly? Seriously ridiculous. Duolingo is better for learning anyway. Started using that. Thought maybe I’ll use both and get a leg up but... Well, I won’t be using this app anymore. Don’t bother if you want to get a nice long streak going as there are problems with it resetting by itself and from the response I got it could be months, it seems, before they figure the problem out. Duolingo here I come! Oh, and by the way, you will learn plenty of words and small phrases with Memrise but they never teach you how to put it all together to actually speak the language. But hey, you’ll know how to say fur or dog in another language. You just won’t be able to say - The fur on that dog is really pretty. Would help if they actually teach you sentence structure and such but whatever.

I’m in the process of learning albanian (obscure, I know!), and this is the only app I’ve found that has albanian on it. On top of that, the algorithm for learning is incredibly interesting and stimulating. Highly recommend!
  • Great App! But There’s issues 4/5

    By JoJo's Jet
I really like Memrise but there is an issue. It’s not a bug or a system issue but a proceeding issue. I only got to the grammar stage of the Korean class but it blocked off everything else. It only unlocks 2 stages in each korean level. When i try to do the Korean ll stuff because everything is locked, i can’t do it. Why don’t they have the first Level free and some of the second level things only available if you pay if you want to make money. Also, the packages to continue are most certainly absurd. I can’t keep doing the same level over and over. Let me end this review off on a positive note. Memrise has helped me a lot with the korean class. There are many reviews that can help you master each level. If there is a solution to my problem, please let me know (somehow!)
  • Not helpful 1/5

    By mswachamp
In lesson 0 of Japanese, you’re taught grammar and asked to use formal versions of words you don’t know. They don’t teach you the words. Half the time I’m closing the app to look up the words then add the formal additions to the words. Not remotely helpful. Would be beneficial if the app taught me.

  • Useful app 5/5

    By omidoo87
    Very functional and valuable
  • I hate the new design!!! 1/5

    By mihgcyf
I used to love this app, my favorite part was the design. The rocket ship aspect with all the planets and the awesome animation made it super interesting and fun. But now they have changed everything, making it look super boring, and now even the cool flowers just look like stupid blobs instead of neat flowers that pop up when you learn something. Before, if you had asked, I would have loved to recommend this app, but not any more, it’s become just like all the other language apps, boring and uninteresting, especially for children.
  • Every update has a new glitch 2/5

    By fruitypoundcake
February 11, 2020: I still use this app every day & I still find it helpful. However, as someone else has already mentioned, the latest glitch in the app is that the daily streak total is updating itself even though I may not have done the day’s exercise yet. This was fine in previous versions & this glitched appeared with the latest update. August 2018: In addition to one course still not downloading (that is still not fixed), I’m frustrated with another course. I completed this course a LONG time ago but I still like to review the flashcards every day and maintain my streak. Since the previous update, every time I try to review this course (which has 1,000 words), I keep getting the same set of words to review. It’s stuck in some kind of repetitive loop and I can’t review different cards. The subscription to this app is NOT cheap and with the amount the developers charge, they should be able to fix all these glitches! July 2018: I recently updated the app and had to re-download all of the courses I’ve been doing. Unfortunately for one of the courses, every time I try to re-download it, the app crashes. The other courses had no issue downloading. Previous update: I’m doing an audio exercise. The English clue is “owner”... all three audio choices say “dueno” in Spanish. Any of them are correct. I chose one and get penalized! This has happened since I last updated the app. Please fix!!! Previous edit: Dear app developers: In previous versions, I was able to browse through what looked like dozens, if not hundreds, of courses. Now the only ones I can see are the official Memrise courses. What happened to all of the other courses? Please fix. Previous edit: I have a paid subscription. Twice now, I’ve lost a huge streak because the app did not update to let me know I needed to do my daily learning. I rely on the orange rocket at the top right corner to tell me if I need to do the day’s lesson or not (I’m doing multiple lessons at once). I lost a 170-day streak, and I just lost another 31-day streak, because the orange rocket did not update at the start of the day, after several minutes of loading & refreshing. PLEASE FIX! This is very demoralizing & makes me not want to use this app or renew my subscription if this basic function won’t work! Previous review: Edit to add: The listening exercises are buggy--all of the choices are the same (the correct answer). The latest update did not fix this. I've been using this app mostly to improve my Spanish vocabulary & it's great. 1. The app offers a ton of different courses for a wide variety of subject. Navigating all of these different courses can be a bit tedious, but the selection is impressive. 2. Even if you don't pay for the additional features in the pro version, the features in the free version are still sufficient for everyday studying. 3. The app providing its own keyboard for typing answers is helpful in answering in Spanish, without the need to switch your keyboard's language, when you have to use a vowel with an accent or a tilda over the letter N. (Duolingo doesn't provide this & that app is always scolding me for such typos.) One request for the developers: Please make the Daily Goal section more easily accessible & clarify what satisfies the minimum for the Daily Goal. For example, REVIEWING words won't satisfy the Daily Goal, only LEARNING words. Sometimes I can't remember if I studied for that day or not (despite the reminders) & not being able to check the Daily Goal whenever I want makes it harder to figure that out.
  • Badge 1/5

    By Neel3
I know that the badge icon tells the number of words to review. But I do not know how I can review all the words.
  • The app used to be much better 2/5

    By Wishing for the past
I used this app years ago. It was my favorite app. I had to stop my language learning for a few years because of personal reasons. I wanted to start again with you guys. But what happened. It used to have so many lessons, so many features I could restart a course if I wanted to and now I can’t. I could make my own if I wanted to and now I can’t. It’s still great for learning, but it seems like greed has become the model instead of helping people learn. I will maybe continue with the free options, but the fees are too much especially now living in South Africa. They are more than my food bill for a two weeks.
  • Why I love memorize 5/5

    By Ella Heinrichs
I love memorize because it doesn’t make you always pay for stuff to get stuff and it lets you make a mistake without it saying “oof you made a mistake now you need to start over”
  • Lots of Fun 5/5

    By broevan
Native speakers, short video clips, very engaging! 5 Stars!
  • Need to be able to turn off pronunciation 3/5

    By rlr524
The app is good except for pronunciation (Japanese version). Clearly not ready and wasn’t tested. I thought I was having trouble with my pronunciation but tried the app with a Japanese native speaking friend and she was unable to get it to pass a single word. Every try was “not quite”. Now I just skip every word...it’s pointless.

    Easy and helpful
  • Best language learning app BUT... 4/5

    By J.Landers
I’ve tried learning apps before, most of them are okay but this one takes the cake! It’s so easy to use and I actually feel like I’m learning the language rather then just memorizing words. The only problem, a suggestion really, is that there isn’t a way to pick more courses on the app other than the top recommended list. I had to go to the website and sign up for the other courses I wanted in order to have them show on the app. While it’s not a deal breaker, it is rather inconvenient.
  • Great asset to learn a new language 5/5

    By akxviii
    Fun and enjoyable
  • So expensive and you don’t even get far for free! 1/5

    By MeadowOfDragons
This app seems very good! However, it’s so stupid that you can only do the first lesson without having to pay! You can’t even move on to the next lesson without paying a LOT of money!! This is very very expensive! And for Arabic, which is what I’m learning, it’s not helpful to only be able to do the first lesson free. Because it only teaches you about 10-15 letters of the alphabet. And that’s it. I already know the alphabet so it was even less helpful! I was hoping to be able to learn some actual words, rather than just part of the alphabet. The cost for this app is way too expensive for the content advertised by the first lesson. The Arabic first lesson is very shallow in depth and to have that be the only thing you get for free is a bit absurd. I am not paying that much.

  • Fun way to learn a language 5/5

    By LennyMIII
Memrise has made learning languages great fun. I love the “Learning with Locals” video clips and the variety of ways to learn. There were some technical issues, but I was pleasantly surprised on how attentive the team was in fixing them.
  • Best Bang for your Buck! 5/5

    By UnAngelLily
I have seen Duolingo, and paid for two subscriptions with Rosetta Stone, but I love this app waaaay more. It’s more interactive, with the lifetime option you get multiple languages, and overall less expensive than Rosetta Stone. As a bonus it has Icelandic, which is a difficult language to find for learning purposes. It has different platforms for learning so that when you hear the language in real life you have a little bit more of a comparable experience since you don’t hear languages in a perfect vacuum of sound. They even explain a little bit of the slang. I’m honestly thinking of buying the lifetime subscription for a friend so I have someone to practice with.
  • Hope to add minor detail 3/5

    By Jbhpajc
Really love this app, had it for over 2 years. Specifically for Chinese, I wonder if it’s possible to add a non character version like you had before. Like the Japanese version you have, it’s an option to learn English written only or with characters. Right now, because they added characters to my Chinese course, I haven’t really dedicated much time and planning on deleting now because the main function was to learn some speaking Chinese.

I wanna learn a new language and I try to go on to the next course OH WAIT I CAN’T why? because the people who made this app decided to let us learn a couple ( specifically 10) words then make us pay a ridiculous amount of money to learn other words, it’s so stupid and i will no longer be using this crappy app. Thanks for nothing.

  • Great for memorizing obviously 5/5

This app in one day has helped me not only learn, but memorize more words and phrases than Duolingo has taught me in a little over a week.
  • Excellent 5/5

    By F.F95
It is a fantastic app to learn languages with. I started learning norweigian with it and I’m getting really good at it! But I’m living in Iran and I should subscribe to be able to use all functions available on the app. I go through a lot of troubles to get that every time my app stops working and I have to update it. It gets frustrating sometimes. Anyway, thank you a lot and good luck!

  • I recommend 5/5

    By Lola the honest
I use to have this app around six years ago. It’s changed since then, but for the better. I’m currently learning German and I love the app! It’s very helpful and I’m learning well, and quickly. I highly recommend to everyone. It’s also great because if you’re a beginner it can teach you the entirety of the language, or if you already know a lot of the language and just need to brush up on your skills, it helps with that too. So overall, 10/10 recommending it to everyone.
  • I can’t get enough 5/5

    By Kimography
I use Memrise as my “immersion” app in conjunction to Duolingo, et c’est parfait! I’ve gone though a lot of apps and methods of learning and Memrise definitely jives with how I take in information. Intonation is important to me when learning a language and I feel that I experience it the best through Memrise. Thank you so much for this!
