Barcode reader was free for a decade. 1/5
All the sudden the barcode reader requires a RIDICULOUS $80 per year to be used.
NO (free plan) BARCODE SCAN: App Just Became Useless 1/5
I use FreeNoms now and I love it!! Definitely check it out homies.
I have used MFP on and off for the past ~8 years. It used to use my purposes fine, even with its errors every so often with having the wrong calorie or nutrition information than the label I just scanned. But now, removing the ‘scan barcode’ feature from the free plan, it’s a useless app to me and countless other users. This was their worst, money hungry, and selfish decision they’ve done. Not only is their paid membership incredibly overpriced in comparison to their competitions, it also has no value in comparison. Other apps, pretty much every other one, offer the scan barcode in the free plan because it’s such an essential part of calorie counting. Removing it for some quick cash, after for years having it available for the free plan, was an incredible let down. But the small annoyance at having to learn another calorie counter app’s way is in no comparison to the massive frustration this terrible update, one might even call THEFT, has caused. I look forward to the day people ask for my recommendation for a calorie counter, and I will gladly ward them away from this app who truly doesn’t care about the well being of all its users, but only its $$$$. TLDR: don’t use this app, there’s much better ones who offer more not just for its free users but also for its paid members at a much lower price.
AND! per email of app developers, I will not be changing my review. Not every food item is in the database, and again, the barcode thing should be free for all members.
Too expensive 2/5
By Julie Batista
Free features keep getting taken away, so they can charge more and more.
Requires Account Before trying 1/5
I wanted to see if it has the features I desire. Unfortunately in order to see any of the features you are required to enter your email to create an account.
I suppose I could have used a throwaway account but that is a pain.
Instead I deleted the app and will find one that doesn’t need to send me spam to access.
Not a fan any longer 1/5
I used this app many times in the past for weight loss. Unfortunately a few years passed that I gained weight back and decided I need this app for help again only to find out most of the best features I used before for free are now pay only. I hate when corporate greed gets in the way of a good thing. The bar code scan was the best feature for my tracking and can’t use it now unless I pay for it. Not a fan any longer…..
By Running artist
Used to be a great app. Unfortunately it is deteriorating, and previously available features are only available on premium service and now one gets stuck in endless commercial loops.
Update is trash 1/5
By SCAMMING WORKERS
Was a great app until they made scanning the barcode of food a premium feature. Before everyone started using the app, you could simply scan the barcode to get the calories & name of the food. Now you have to pay $20 FOR A MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION to get the feature. Ridiculous. If you haven’t updated your app, DO NOT. That way you can still keep that feature. It’s all about money now a days. Not even HBO Max is $20! Get a grip.
Why did you make it less intuitive? 1/5
By Lowes fan
I loved it, went Premium, then moved features around making it so complicated to log meals and look at macro breakdowns, I stopped paying for premium. I am now deleting the app. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
App has become needlessly busy 2/5
By Tech Guy Online
Now it’s busy and complex. Too many steps and clicks to add food. Even worse removing a wrong entry. Terrible UI. Database for food is strong. Hut app makers should be fired and replaced with someone that understands usability as the focus.
Waste of Money Most foods are not found in the scanner 1/5
First of all, I contributed to this database adding foods for over 10 years and then my contributions were locked behind a paywall and I now have to pay to scan foods that I entered into the database. Kinda shady!
I decided to go ahead and pay anyways but I’m greatly disappointed. The scanner does not work for most things. I scan something as simple as Kraft cheese and it can’t find it. I have to manually search for every single item despite paying for this app.
So disappointing. Please fix!
Used to be good 1/5
This app is now hidden behind a pay wall. Going to another app..very sad
It could be awesome 2/5
I wanted to use this seriously but you can’t get the Macros to save if you adjusted manually even with the premium service. I just paid $80. I have to adjust my macros every meal to see where I’m at to contact us doesn’t work. The support feature doesn’t work and there’s no FAQ when you click the link it’s dead. So disappointed.
Downhill Since Under Armour 2/5
Used to love this app for tracking food. Many of the beneficial features that used to be free are now locked behind a paywall, like scanning food items.
Just getting back to the app…pay for scan!?? 1/5
Really? Pay for scanning barcodes…nope.
This app was my favorite and now they’re charging for the barcode scanning feature? 1/5
Greedy and lame. There’s already an obnoxious amount of apps.
Bar code scanning removed - see recent negative reviews 1/5
I’ve been using this app for at least 13 years, daily for the past 6 years. I’ve been encouraged to switch to other tracking programs from other groups I belong to (ie. Cronometer) but I never wanted to because of my history with MyFitnessPal and it was perfect the way it was (free version). But today when I went to scan a bar code, it sent me to a screen to buy premium for $19.99/month. I couldn’t believe it so I went to the app comments. Most definitely I’m not the only one disappointed with MyFitnessPal. To the developer that has been responding with the standard apologies…take a review of your most recent ratings. This does not look good for MyFitnessPal, especially when there are other options out there. I know for myself, I can no longer recommend MyFitnessPal to anyone looking for a good tracking app.
Blocking old features is just wrong 1/5
I’ve been using the app for years and I’m ok with devs making new features and walling them behind a paid subscription because this has been an otherwise amazing app. But making old features as the scan barcode suddenly a pay add on? Really? That is just worsening the app for all the people that has been using it for years…
Great for losing weight 4/5
I have used it before off and on and I lost weight stopped about 8 -12 months ago and now after two kids I’m seriously trying to lose all the weight. I started reusing it back in December 2022 .. .. it would have gotten 5 stars but they made the scan bar now a premium feature?? It used to be free I keep searching for items but they have the wrong calorie count and now I can’t get an accurate calorie count on some things unless I pay a premium feature WHEN IT USED TO BE FREE…
That’s so frustrating but I’m still going to use it because like I said before it has helped me lose the weight
Removed scanning option 1/5
By Galati 123
I loved using and recommending the app until you removed the scanning option from the free version. Very disappointed
Useless now that they removed the FREE FEATURE of scanning 1/5
Plenty of other FREE SCANNING apps to use:
Used to be great 1/5
Too too expensive. They took away basic features.
Delete it. 1/5
Free version is bad. Paid version is too expensive. Used to be a good app. Not anymore.
Used to be a quality app 1/5
Decision to move barcode scanner behind the paywall means I will no longer use the app. Real shame as it used to be great.
So helpful! 5/5
So thankful for this app! It’s helping me stay on track!
Promoting restriction even when not needed 2/5
I currently weigh 98 lbs at 5’5. I have to gain a lot of weight. The maximum calories it will automatically show is 1800 something. You have to manually enter more. To gain 2 lbs a week at that weight a person must consume between 3,000 to 5,000 calories. I know that, but others may not. This is dangerous advice that is being disseminated.
Additionally, you can only enter to gain 1 lb a week, but people on this app can try and lose 2 lbs a week.
Why is that? Are you fat phobic? What about bodybuilders?
Do you not even care if someone has a medical condition or an eating disorder?
Bring barcode back 1/5
What made this app popular and unique was their free barcode scanner which I have used for years. Now it’s hidden under a $20 it’s kinda like all the other apps in the App Store.
Don’t use this app 1/5
Predatory pop up ads and they put features that users help make functional like the barcode scanning locked behind a paywall. All downhill since a big corporation bought it. Garbage app and garbage company.
Use to be great 1/5
I loved my fitness pal, but don’t find it as intuitive with the changes and most of the useful options are now in the premium version requiring payment
App is ok but buggy 3/5
The paid app has plenty of features but it’s buggy. My “more” option always gives me a blank screen unless I shut off my iPad then restart. Then, if I leave the “more” page and go to log a meal, create a recipe, etc. the next time I go to “more” I get a blank screen again. Just now got a blank screen after going to use the Help function. Can ‘t even get back to my diary, profile, plans or anything. Just a blank screen that is locked. Yes, my app is up to date.
not sure why i need an account 1/5
By Steve Cher
i am not sure why i need an account for just tracking my calories on the phone
terrible greed 1/5
they removed barcode scanning from the free version, $20/month for a mobile app is ridiculous.
Money Hungry Developers 1/5
I never write reviews, but usually depend on them. This is one of the few I have written solely because how terrible it’s become. This app used to be insanely good and for free. Now everything you actually need is paid only. I mean$20/mo??? Seriously? My gym membership is $10/mo and they have seriously maintenance and overhead. I’m pretty much done with this company. Used to tell everyone about this app, but now looking for another one.
Too good for the commoners 2/5
I used and loved MFP for a decade and, with my entries, helped build the barcode scanner database that they put behind a paywall a few months ago. The exorbitant membership price during an economic slowdown shows that MFP is out of touch unless they intend to be an elite app for the privileged few. Being locked out of the database unless I use clunky circa 2010 tech is a no-go when there are many other apps who understand that barcode scanning is a basic must for functionality in a modern calorie counting app
Sadly not a good app anymore 1/5
Have had the app for a few years, the last updates have made it a pain to navigate. And now the most basic of features you have to pay for, was free. Very disappointed.
Pay for premium to use scanner? ✌️
No more barcode scanning = dump MyFitnessPal 1/5
Everyone in my family was using this app but then MFP moved barcode scanning to the WAY-too-expensive subscription.
We swapped to FatSecret app. Easier to log AND they include barcode scanning.
I’m very disappointed that MFP took the basic capability of scanning barcodes and shoved that into the bloated subscription.
For the cost of the subscription I can pay for a full health club membership.
What happened? 1/5
I used to love this app and admittedly, stopped using it for a while. When I came back the platform is not at all user friendly for non subscribers anymore and features that used to be free (scanning barcodes for example) are now only an option for paying customers. You lost me there. Hope it gets sorted eventually.. if not.. I guess I’ll be finding another app.
Disappointing changes 1/5
I used the app for years and loved it. I wanted to start tracking again and now I find that they’ve changed features to require a premium subscription. You want $20 a month to use a barcode scanner? Absurd. Sad to see that a good app went the way of a totally unreasonable money grab.
$80-240 per year to use the barcode scanner?! 2/5
I’ve used this app daily for the last 7.5 years, but now that they force you to pay $20/month (or $80 for a year) to use the barcode scanner, I’m pretty much over it. I’ll log in to keep my streak (over 2700 days) for now, but the fact that they took a feature of the app that WAS FREE for over a decade and turned it into a “pro” feature is ridiculous. It took much longer than anticipated, but I gave one extra star for adding dark mode.
Issues with my Premium Trial 1/5
I’m currently in my 1st week of a 30-day Premium trial. I’m frustrated in that I can’t access my account from a 2nd device. I started the trial on my iPhone, but I’d like the convenience of accessing my account on my iPad. They do not synch and on the iPad I’m only getting the free version even though I used the same credentials. At least the iPhone version is correctly synching with Apple Health. In addition, it doesn’t seem to be a robust enough app to warrant the high price tag. Finally, why not offer a shorter membership in addition to the annual? For some of us, a 3 month option and a 6 month option would be better. As it stands now, I won’t be going premium when the 30-day trial is complete.
Bring back barcode scanning 1/5
New update took away barcode scanning and made it a premium option. Definitely not worth $19 a month are you crazy?
By Recipe change
App needs an update. Half the time the recipes are not loading and arent able to be accessed. I used this app last year and the recipes are basically the same with little differences.
Great functionality; steps not syncing 4/5
The app is easy to use and has great functionality, but the only annoying issue I’ve encountered is that my steps haven’t been syncing with Apple Health for the past several days.
Removing features, paywalls, glitches 1/5
By Hunter T7
I used to love my fitness pal until they added their “premium” paid subscription which introduced ads to non-subscribers and locked previously accessible content behind a paywall. Actions that should be usable by anyone in a “food” app like scanning QR codes are only available now if you pay monthly. This normally wouldn’t be an issue for an app that started out as a paid service and then has a “free” mode. But myfitnesspal has actively taken away from their users by adding this subscription model well after their initial release. Additionally there have been numerous glitches that were never addressed or fixed. For example there’s generally a 1/3 chance my app will immediately crash upon loading my first meal of the day or whenever I add a pre-set meal plan. The consistency of these glitches is astonishing for an app like this. I will not recommend this app to anyone interested in food logging systems.
Honestly used to be a great app but they are money hungry 1/5
Put a useful feature behind a paywall honestly not worth paying for at all prices are too steep it’s better to try and find another app
The original superior 1/5
By Gordo Godito
Sadly the app has been cluttered with ads and functionality greatly reduced….
A 10/15 second ad that pops up when the app opened and then disappears would make for a far cleaner page and user experience
Plenty of apps that do this for less 1/5
Idk who you think you are making people pay for such a simple service.
Really Helps With Geting Strong And Healthy
So far… 1/5
So far it hasn’t been able to connect to my Garmin, even though it says it connected. Hard to navigate and change and I got the premium because it says it has an accurate calculator but I can’t even find the calculator. I’ve done other macros calculators and my fitness pal is under. Idk I’m going to give it a shot. It is nice to scan instead of reading for 5 minutes just to find the correct meal. About the only good thing the premiums good for. So far. I’ll update at my one month mark.
