As a non-fiction writer the free version is the best transcriber I have used 5/5
For many years I have used dictation to create drafts as well as notes.
This service in the free version is wonderful!
1. Accurate! Much better than Apple notes, and as good for transcribing dictation as the expensive human transcribing service SpeechWrite.
2. Fast loading and as convenient as Apple Notes, much easier than Dragon
3. Keeps recording during my long pauses to think. Récords very long sessions without the constant restarting required in Notes.
4. Even though I am using the free version without a customized dictionary this service knows sophisticated words: for example “existential” is correctly recognized every time. Try that in Apple Notes for some very amusing and frustrating results!
5. Lots of time available free! I have not hit a limit using it for dictation,
6. I have not used it yet for two party conversations or meetings, so others will have to review its performance with multiple voices.
7. If I used it for meetings I would need the minutes of the Premium version.
8. I do not use it with a custom vocabulary so can’t report on how well it would do for example in medicine or biology or computer science. My sense is it would be quite good, but I do tip my hat to Dragon for their specialized versions.
9. That said I will probably upgrade this service to Premium and see how much I can customize it by adding my own special terms.
10. I am seriously grateful for this service and for the Developers!
I can’t say enough about this app 5/5
By Tinder Loser
1. Great customer support. Got a response on Memorial Day within minutes to an answer I could not find on FAQs.
2. Transcription is the best of any transcript service I’ve used. Even when importing with text Otter will do an independent transcription and it will be better than that of the service I used before.
3. Ability to add photos to text AFTER the recording is big for me.
4. You’re able to import, export, sync to and from various services.
5. YMMV but this app has never ceased to amaze me.
Absolutely amazing!! 5/5
I don’t know another better app of its kind. Strongly recommend after having used it for a while.
Update: Getting better 3/5
Bumping from 2 ➡️ 3 stars. It's getting better UX-wise. There still needs to be less clicks to just copy/pasta the whole transcript.
Functionality-wise, its great.... but the user experience is really bad, on the website and on the app. Like really really bad. How an AI company ships this is beyond my understanding.
Great. Thanks. 5/5
Works well. Great UI.
More features soon to come I bet. Thanks. Thanks.
Incredibly accurate! 5/5
I am completely impressed! Otter is extremely accurate and immediately transcribes quicker and more accurate than any human could with very minor mistakes— which mistakes are usually just made to the lack of clarity from the speaker.
This app is life transforming for me and my schooling and studies. It makes it super easy after it has transcribed for me to format it and fix the grammar and paragraphs.
I love how when you review the text it highlights the words you hear making it really quick to review the accuracy.
This app is completely 5 stars I am mind blown. Thank you otter!
Please make an apple watch app! 4/5
One thing that’s holding me back from going from Just Press Record to otter is the lack of an apple watch app. Having an apple watch app makes recording MUCH easier since you can just tap record on your watch and record the whole room. It also is good for things like recording lectures since some professors and teachers don’t like seeing phones out. Having an apple watch app would improve this app tenfold and would make me seriously consider it as my main recording app. Still a great app in all other aspects though!
Favorite new tool 5/5
This tool changes everything. The transcripts are uncannily accurate, and the team is incredibly responsive to feedback.
Works Decently but another Bait and Switch App 3/5
It appears they now want users to pay too much per month for what this app used to do for free—importing recordings for rough transcripts. If we have to pay $10 per month, shouldn’t they provide people to proof these transcripts? They’re helpful, but not completely accurate. it’s a lot of work to do the proofing. And with the new charges, it’s not really worth it.
Love this app 5/5
I really do love this app.
One thing missing 4/5
I love this app. The one thing missing is being able to speeded every slow down the recording so that it can be listened to at different speeds. up
All I can say is this is the most amazing app for someone who meets with many people and not having the time to write and organize notes or remembering all the details of a conversation. This does it for you.
Tremendous way to write first drafts 5/5
By Adam David Long
Love this program and use it for everything now — creating first drafts of thing I want to write, transcribing videos , dictating notes, recording meetings. Works really well and I use it every day
Otter delivers like nothing else 4/5
I use this app for classes. Much of the vocabulary is unique to the course of study and is often distorted by other speech to text options. Otter gets it right almost every time and it seems to have improved as I used it. I noticed that it corrects the text on the fly. I don’t know if someone is listening or if it is real ai contextualizing the speech to find the appropriate solution but, whatever it is, I love the service. I pay when I need to and drop the paid option when I no longer need it. I would not have paid for this app at all if they tried to force me into a one year plan at the current rate.
Here’s what I would like to see:
Integration with Evernote and other note options. I don’t like having to have my notes held hostage in this app. I paid for the service when I needed it but cannot now export those notes. I don’t need to keep my current notes but this will impact my long term thinking.
The most amazing transcription tool ever 5/5
By a ShiShi
I don’t think for my work I’ve used any transcription tool as powerful as this. Definitely recommended!
Lifesaving app 5/5
I wish I had known this app before spending too much time on transcription! Hands down by far the most accurate, user friendly, and economical transcription tool I have ever used. I’ve tried Dragon, Nvivo, Wreally etc. Otter.ai blow them out of waters. 10/10 stars
Been using Otter for 3 Years 5/5
And it’s been invaluable in so many ways.
By Zac Jason Lucas
This is very good, very good. Many congratulations to the team that worked to develop this excellent solution.
A must for the hearing impaired 5/5
By must-keep-reading 20
This app is so easy to use and fantastically accurate. Have only used thus far with one person talking so using zoom will be the big test. But WOW!
For your deaf friends 4/5
This is great! Very accurate and a great tool !! Only complaint is the text is too small for the older folks
New changes limit the functionality of the free plan 5/5
By Robert Sterbal
The free plan is much less useful with the new restrictions.
At least you will be able to test transcription quality but not rely on the service.
Keeping track of everything 5/5
It helps you keep track of everything that goes on throughout the lectures. Also it makes it easier to go back and listen, so you can take your time with understanding the Materials on your own terms.
No warning—uploading of files removed 1/5
When you offer a product for people to build their workflow around and then fundamentally change the terms overnight with no warning and require immediate payment for what you once offered free—especially during a time of crisis for us all, esp. journalists and educators—that amounts to an extortionate practice and profiteering. Uploading files is no longer allowed without a premium membership and was changed without warning.
The starting price to recover these features is $10 a month when my income has plummeted to less than half what it was. And I can’t get an educators’ discount without an edu address or sending them a photo of a registration (HINT: teachers don’t register and not all educators belong to a monumental organization).
I imagine this move is linked to the recent investment by NTT Docomo. All responses from the company I’ve seen have been deliberately obtuse corporate copy pasta.
Good job alienating a former evangelist and would-be paying customer. Only my paltry money is not good enough for you so you charge poor teachers corporate rents. Can you at least allow a kind of metered usage with a prepay option? Your expenses can be nowhere near Netflix’s but yet you feel I should pay you more than a basic plan there every month?
Do NOT respond to this with your corporate drone “developer’s response “.
I have used this to transcribe videos where the speaker is talking at brisk pace (with a Texan accent) and the machine got every word right. Very impressive service that puts Apple’s dictation button to shame.
Uploads now limited 1/5
I wax extremely disappointed to discover that Otter has low limited audio imports to just three without the premium plan. As a broadcast journalist who also writes stories for the web, this puts a huge monkey wrench into my workflow. I know what you told another user about Otter not being a pure transcription service; and yes, while it’s not 100% accurate (no transcription services ever will be), it is a huge time-saver. While I’m appreciative of the one-month premium trial offer, that stops short of what’s necessary, and that is a lifting of the new upload limit, which was a horrible decision on your company’s part.
Best at transcribing accurately. Awesome customer service. 5/5
Otter is really built for recording and transcribing meetings in real time, but I also use it to transcribe interviews I’ve recorded. To do that, you’ll need a premium account. Those monthly fees are actually very low compared to every other option I’ve seen, and if you’re writing professionally it’s a reasonable cost of business. It’s a LOT less costly than human transcription, which I could never afford; it’s not as perfect as human transcription but so much faster. The transcription accuracy is much better than any other machine transcription I’ve used.
Didn’t record an important meeting 1/5
Pressed record and i constant had to restart recording because it would just stop. End up with blank recordings!!! Bought premium too
Meeting Must Have 5/5
By Laura Miller
Even if I am summarizing a meeting, I count on Otter to re-listen to details I may have missed. An absolute must-have in my toolbox! Otter has never let me down!
Bait-and-switch on audio imports 2/5
I’m very disappointed that Otter just put major limitations on the number of audio imports for basic users. It’s now just three imports. As far as I know, Otter gave its users no advance notice or even a warning in the app update release notes that It was downgrading this feature :-( Please make things right and change it back, Otter!

Hello, I hope this message finds you well and in the best of health and hope today.
This app is superlative!
Thankful for all your time and all your efforts regarding our shared interest in a Pro active jet streamed approach to a fictional tool for a life of sanity. This is absolutely The perfect tool!
Time saver 5/5
By OG Capitalist
Works great and so easy to use between devices!
By Akbar Q
Can’t enlarge fonts 1/5
This has the potential to be a great tool for people with low vision. Unfortunately the text size is limited. Shame on this company for not caring about people with disabilities.
Clear audio! Very sensitive! Good interpretation.
Fantastic app for a researcher 5/5
I am working on my PhD and this application was a life saver! This not only saved me a great deal of time but also saved me a lot of money.
As a Deaf person who lip reads, signs, and voices for herself, this has been a lifesaver especially in social gatherings! It isn’t perfect but OMG for the first time in my life I did not have to lip read so much and am finally able to process what’s being said and make connections with people! Thank you!!!!!! How much does the premium cost?
Great app 5/5
Incredibly satisfied USC MBA student 5/5
By Soarin above the Clouds
This program has been a life saver for me. Trying to transcribe lectures is not only time consuming but cumbersome as well. It takes speech and converts it to text as best as any program I’ve ever worked with. I am forever grateful to my daughter who introduced me to Otter. The program is hardly affected by accents, speed, or intonation. If you’re in business or a student, this program is a must!
Works seamlessly 5/5
Works seamlessly and integrates with lots of different platforms.
Me, my friends, my team 5/5
Not sure how I found you. But so glad I did. Otter has become a verb. “Kristen, are you Ottering right now?” “Don’t worry, I’ll otter the meeting via speakerphone.” Never have notes been easier. My newest complaint to others at work: “you have my exact words right there, I’m not talking to hear myself talk, I’m literally speaking out every action item!” I’m the worst. But Otter is the BEST.
Waste of time 3/5
I can use voice to speech on my iPhone and iPad with whatever I take notes, so there’s no point in this app. Though it works fine.
By Minshew Q
I literally turned my voice memo notes into very detailed accurate notes!! I love this app
The best app ever 5/5
By Il lupo
Exceed all my expectations. I can’t believe I discovered this app only recently. It saves me ton of time, not only for transcribing meetings but the way notes are organized. And you can covert text to word docs as well.
Amazing if you have ADHD... 5/5
Wish this would have been around when I was in college. I have ADHD and I am terrible with note taking and I always felt that I missed something important. With this you can export the transcripts and edit in to notes. I also always get stuck taking notes in work training classes. That is hard when I also need to be in training. This allows me to stay focused on learning and not be distracted with trying to also take notes.
Loved though imperfect 5/5
By Retrofit Reviews
This is one of my all-time favorite apps because of how much writing I get done by taking dictation. Otter has helped a busy person fall back in love with his favorite hobby. It sometimes gets some words wrong. Sometimes ridiculously so. But it is a minor issue when the rest of what the app does is so awesome.
Surprising great 5/5
Have been using the app for notes during business meetings, supplementing notes and sharing the tone of our brand messaging.
Transcripts are quick and accurate enough. Can easily edit if needed.
I started use this on Saturday 4/5
I think it’s great but sometimes it doesn’t pick up words. It showed blank. My daughter’s cheer coach was talking and I got nothing. I had to stop recoding then start again. I am hoping this will be improving by pick up words. I am profoundly deaf myself and my daughter also is. I need to depend on this so I would be in same page as coach and cheer moms.
Question, can I text to voice? I tried and seems not have that.
Good job 4/5

I moved over from AVA. Otter is better and works without interruption. Better accuracy.
It would be nice to be able to adjust font size during live transcription.
