Doesn’t update after adoptions 2/5
The app doesn’t update fast enough when dogs are adopted. There were many times that I saw a nice dog on the app and went to the website, only to find the word “adopted” under his picture or that his listing had already been removed altogether. Sometimes a dog isn’t removed until a few days later. Until this is fixed, I’ll be using the website directly and checking the local shelters’ Facebook pages.
NEED TO FIX OPTIONS TO SAVE MORE PET LIVES! 3/5
please fix options so you can select multiple ones for ex “medium and large dogs” and app does not offer selection ex “good with cats, dogs, small kids” etc. (website does offer)
Also adoption places often say email sent thru per-finder does not get to them. !!!!!!
We are talking about pet lives being rescued please do something to change the app to make it easier for people to do so!!!!
Location is all over the place 2/5
By my uhh
I know there are dogs near me on this because I found it through a local shelter, but it’s only showing dogs 2-5 hours away.
Has fewer filters than desktop site 3/5
As other people have said, this needs updates. If you favorite an animal, it’s stays in your likes even after being adopted. You can filter by cat/dog, breed, age, male/female, size—but you can’t sort by good with children/dogs/other, house-trained/declawed/specials needs, coat length, days on Petfinder, or color.
This is such an important mission being failed by this app. Search is super general and can’t be narrowed by child or other pet friendliness, and the area doesn’t seem to matter since the animals returned in the search are from all over the country. Blah!
Pretty useless 1/5
By wang dang
So much for searching in your area. All I get is results in other states
Improve your searching abilities! 2/5
This app is terrible! You can only search for one breed at a time, one size at a time, and one age at a time! Please make the app able to search multiple options. This seems like pretty basic functionality! Also make it so you can search within location boundaries. I put it my location and it brought up dogs thousands of miles away!
Website is better 2/5
This has significantly fewer filtering options than the PetFinder.com website. I recommend using the site over the app.
Not iPad-friendly 2/5
Needs serious updates. Not suited for an iPad, and could use some more features, but does the job.
Not helpful 2/5
Search algorithms are awful, picking up listings clear across the country. Cute pictures to browse through but a waste of time beyond that.
Please check Yelp before you use a rescue 5/5
By Cash option
I was shocked to see what I found when I checked yelp about a few "rescues" that advertise on this app. Please if this can save just 1 person from a broken heart and extensive vet bills my review was worth it. It's a neat app but should implement the ability to report these sham rescues out to just make money! 5 stars because it is easy to use. But please add the ability to let users give rescues a rating system. Until then do your homework check yelp!
App will not let me select a couple breeds 2/5
For some reason, when I try to filter by breed—specifically Yorkie Yorkshire Terriers OR Sheltie Shetland Sheepdog—I get NO results ( and these are two breeds I am interested in.) This used to work a few months ago but not recently. I have tried in combination with both male/female, all sizes, all age groups but nothing. I try other breeds or breed groups and I have no problems. I know there are dogs from those two breeds up for adoption because when I search by a breed specific organization (e.g. Save a Yorkie, Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue), there are many results. I would love it if the app developer can check out why this happens.
Just okay dawg 3/5
I will reiterate some other reviews I saw. It would be great if you could search multiple criteria at the same time (e.g. multiple breeds). Also, it would help if you could search a certain distance from your home location (e.g. within 25, 50, 100 or 250 miles).
Lots of updates needed. 2/5
By apple and nickname junk = 💩
Too many problems with the app:
1) Most importantly, I understand this is mostly the shelters, but when a pet is adopted Update immediately. It should be the most simplest thing for them, it should be four clicks away from when they turn on their phone. 1open the app, 2click your pets 3click status 4change status to adopted.
If that’s in place and it’s that simple then I’m really frustrated at how nearly every adoption center/people need to stop being lazy.
It’s very frustrating.
It’s been months and dogs I called about that got adopted over two months ago, still are available and have active profiles.
2) Why are we so limited on our search filters?
Why can’t I pick multiple breeds, why can’t I pick baby and young, Why can’t I pick medium and large dogs?
Agree on need for update 3/5
Need the ability to geographically limit search (only within 400 miles of a given zip code, for example).
Favorites need to update and remove dogs that already have homes or whose postings have expired.
A few changes needed 2/5
I can’t seem to refine my search. Instead I need to quit the app and start over completely. I’d also be interested in selecting more than one option when it comes to age of the pet. Right now I can only pick one and then have to quit to go back and search the other. Finally, I can enter my zipcode to find animals nearbye but I can’t limit the number of miles I would travel to adopt a pet.
I think the app has great potential. I found my border collie on Petfinder back in 2006! She’ll be 14 the end of March.
One main fix needed!!! 3/5
Love the app but there’s no send to using messages, which being a mobile app I’ve never run into this with other apps please fix it I’ll raise my rating if you do!!!
Needs updates 3/5
It’s a great app and I think it’ll work amazing if you adjusted a few things. First, make it so you can search for multiple things instead of one option. For example, instead of just large dogs, you can click large and medium sized dogs. And same with the age option. Second, if a dog is adopted, it should be updated immediately and the dog taken off the site. Having a dog up for adoption on a site when it already has a home can cause a problem. Also, put more in for a dogs personality. Like whether or not he’s housebroken, can handle other animals, can handle children, can handle both men and women, and is easily trained or something of the sort. It would make the app easier to use.
Useless & never works 1/5
This app is a waste of time. It worked for about an hour & every time since that I’ve tried, I can’t get any of the filters to work.
Zero Usability Unreliable Lousy UX Design 1/5
This is a useless app. I was using the PetFinder site on iOS Safari and figured the app would be less clunky than the crippled mobile web UX. Wrong. App is useless. Site working fine on iPhone Safari but Sorry An Error Has Occurred useless message on ANY search on the app. (Update: this seems fixed now but UX got even worse. See below).
On top of that the app UX designers apparently can’t handle the concept of someone mixing and matching preferences. eg maybe I want a baby and/or young dog option but not senior. The site lets you multiple-choose what options you want but the app programmers minds cannot compute that possibility. Zero stars not possible so giving one.
Update: Seriously? There’s no login option on the iOS app? So favorites in on one device don’t show up on other devices. Is -1 star possible?
I deleted the app 1/5
By Fart face 18
There is no option to set parameters to your search. I can’t choose “good with kids,” “good with dogs,” etc. and I can’t choose the distance from my home. You just put out in your zip code, say you want a cat or dog, and boom, you have thousands upon thousands of animals come up. There’s no way to filter out the ones you don’t want.
This app is useless without the filters that are available on the website. Why can’t I search adult and senior together? Why can’t I search for dogs that are cat friendly? I would give it zero stars if I could.
Did the developers actually use the app? 1/5
How can anyone think that limiting the filters to only selecting one option was a good idea? Clearly it was intentional since the website has this functionality. But the website has no way to save favorites. This app and the site are just a hot mess.
Mutilple parameter 3/5
Great app but would be better if you could select multiple parameters for each category not just one. Example being able to choose a large and a medium dog.
Good app, room for improvement 4/5
Very good to connect with not only dogs and cats but pretty much any animal. Glad there is information about the pet and also the shelter. However, I never know if the animal is still available or not. If there was an automatic function which showed when posts were last updated or posted, it would help.
Poor excuse for an app 1/5
I have filled out and submitted an application for a specific dog twice now, over the app, and the owner is still saying it’s not been received. I have emailed the company but considering there’s no phone number to call for help I doubt I’ll be getting any. Won’t be using this app again.
Not there yet 3/5
I love their website, but this app doesn’t have the ability to filter to the same levels as their full site. It’s good, but not great yet.
No support 1/5
Try searching for a Cane Corso and the app won’t find anything. If you look on their website it show a bunch. I emailed them and they say “use the website” umm then what’s the point if your app 🤔🙄. That’s coming from Brent Bilis Petfinder Technology Operations Specialist.
Please improve the search functions 2/5
It’s much more user friendly than the website in terms of navigation. However, the search parameters are very limited compared to the website.
Search Location Frustration 1/5
Need more search filters so I can actually search within the USA (where I live). I constantly receive listings in Canada which I cannot filter out. I manually pick a city in the center of the state but then I cannot see adoptions in my area. Kind of useless and frustrating search engine.
Needs Improvement But Works 4/5
I found my little guy with this app but it is a little buggy sometimes.
Needs work 2/5
Filters could be opened up to include all to show more pets
The email function didn’t work
Surprised there isn’t the option to share pets via text message or simply copy a link
Location not working 2/5
Tried to update the location search and now I’m pulling dogs from Texas. I love in Ohio! Seems like this app needs some updates to make it a little more user friendly.
dumping ground 1/5
There is no vetting done for organizations that post on the app/site. It seems anyone can start an org and post pets. You search local and the pets you find are halfway across the country. If you find one you like people don’t answer or give excuses why it took a week to answer.
Filter by location doesn’t work 2/5
When searching for pets in my area, even with the gps on and putting in my zip code or my city and state, I’m still getting options coming up that are on the west coast when I’m on the east coast. Not helpful
search unavailable 1/5
By Hot fries bae
when i had my iphone 7, i could use this app with no problems. now i have the lasted iphone and i try to search for dogs and i get a pop up saying “sorry we could not match any pets matching your search” even when i search all dogs with nothing specific
Just use the website 1/5
The website is so much better. It offers far more features than the app.
Great but Needs a tweak 3/5
Love the app. Works great on iPhone. BUT it really needs to have travel range added. Because when you are searching for a breed specific animal it brings up every single one available in the USA. Many states don’t allow out of state adoption. You have to waste too much time opening every profile to find out if it is even one you could adopt due to logistics or state I would rate it 5 stars if you added travel range. Thanks
Terrible app 1/5
This is literally the worst app I have used. I was trying to find a French bulldog in my area to adopt. So I entered all of the information into the search criteria age puppy or young, breed French bulldog, area Saint Louis, MO. It then brings up my results which show absolutely ZERO French bulldogs, it even included a Great Dane/Jack Russel terrier mix with absolutely no age or area parameters. There were dogs in CA,FL, and NY. This app is trash.

BEST APP EVER
Search filters are useless 1/5
By Nella's Mom
Been trying to use this app for a few days but I can’t deal with it any longer. Searches near my hometown in Maine come up with any location but. And why is just one specific combination allowed? I can’t search for more than one breed of dog, one sex, and one age group? Stupid. Deleting. You developers have work to do.
Disappointed in Oregon 1/5
Disappointed by this app. You can only search one breed at a time and it doesn’t allow you narrow down your search to dogs that are good with kids, cats, and other dogs! What a waste of my time!
Disappointed in Oregon
Primary functionality doesn’t work 1/5
Just downloaded the app to search for a pup to adopt. In order to find the right dog, I tried to use the filters. I don’t care about gender - the app won’t let you select both. I don’t care about age - the app will only let you select one (puppy, young, etc). And finally, I’m open to a list of 10+ breeds/mixes, however the app will only let you select one. Immediately deleted the app, and will continue to manually check my local shelters.
Please Fix! 3/5
They really need to update this app. It is slow, laggy, and completely crashes. uninstalling and reinstalling does not matter.
App has not functioned properly for me 1/5
After using the website for years I was excited about them introducing an app. It’s never worked properly for me though. No matter how vague or specific my search parameters are, it claimed there are no pets available in the St. Louis area. After multiple attempts at trouble shooting, I’ve given up and gone back to the website.
Needs improvement. 2/5
I am giving the app two stars because I am a little disappointed in the functionality of the app. It does make the mobile viewing experience easier, however, some search filters aren’t provided. Most importantly, I had been collecting a number onto to my favorites list over the course of a day, and not only did it not allow to favorite anymore, I found my list to be empty. I also don’t see a part of the app where you sign in with your Petfinder account. Please work on these things to ensure a smooth experience for users of the application.
By Appy Thoughts
I love this app.
I wish it had the same filters as the website does, but it is still excellent.
I guess the effort counts 3/5
All the pets I tried to adopt are already adopted.
Missing basic functions 1/5
It seems searches cannot be cleared, updates are not automatic, and only one filter can be searched at time. This app should allow you to search more than one size, more than one age, and more than one breed at a time...
