ProtonMail - Encrypted Email app reviews

  • Love the privacy 4/5

    By AceOfSpades2015
Great mailing app alternative to mainstream mail that misuses your data. A bit hard to explain to friend why they should also get an account for end to end encryption, but I guess that’s necessary.
  • Great service 4/5

    By Peasent 1/330000000
Although it lacks some basic features (like dark mode!), I respect their genuine work in the consumer & small business privacy sector. Perhaps try adding different pricing tiers like the VPN service (hard to convince people switching from free services to pay up $60/year for email).
  • Forced to switch to Tutanota 3/5

    By brian 2123
I’ve been a LONG time paid protonmail user and have been eagerly awaiting their calendar function. Unfortunately, the wait has just been too long and with no roll out date in sight, I can’t afford to not have a fully functioning calendar any longer. Super bummed, but I have started my switch to Tutanota. All other functionality is great. Except for the bridge. Definitely surprised they don’t have a full blown windows application. Their answer is the “Bridge”, but I was not a fan. I hope some of these features will be added in the future o that I can consider switching back.
  • ProtonMail action extension for iPhone when using safari 4/5

    By Alukakum
Love proton mail. For some reason after the last update, I’m no longer to add ProtonMail app as an action extension to safari on my iPhone. It works as an action extension for word docs or other docs. But the app is not showing as an option to be used as an extension on safari if I’m looking at a new article and want to send to myself using ProtonMail .
  • Best email client 5/5

    By doneill60
Open gmail to compare data linked to you. Free yourself from the adtech monopolies. New suite being built is very exciting and should rival well. Buy the product don’t be one!
  • Want my emails 1/5

    Can’t find my emails
  • Font Too Small 3/5

    By Jim from DC
I like ProtonMail but can't see the font. Please allow user to adjust font or use system font.
  • PLEASE add conversation threading!!! 3/5

    By Regexterminator
I love the service, and the fact that at least there is an app. But it's 2021. Seriously. You guys have threading in the web client. How hard can it be to add this in the app. Pleassseee please, it's crazy that it's not supported.
  • Service is great; app needs creature comforts 4/5

    By Swinebone091516
All in all, I love Protonmail. I appreciate their mission to promote encryption and secure services through email and how they value privacy over all else. I’ve been a user for a professional email account for over 2 years and it’s rare that I’ve had any problems with the iOS app or the web app. When I do have problems, it’s usually relatively easy to report them and get them fixed in an update. One thing that I would appreciate, however, is some more perks and creature comforts associated with the iOS app. For example, the ability to schedule emails would be great. Equally, I’d love it if notifications synced between devices. I understand that Protonmail’s main focus is security and privacy (which I wholeheartedly appreciate) but it’d be great if they could compete a bit more with services like Gmail or Outlook.
  • Love the service but wish iCal calendar invites could go to Apple iOS calendar app 5/5

    By reader fanatic Mark
I don’t consider my calendar invites to be sensitive and I share my calendar with my family. When running the beta ProtonMail web app, email calendar invites are easily sent to ProtonCalendar. I wish there was an option to also send them to Apple Calendar. I am a long time customer, not complaining, just asking for a new feature.
  • Highly Satisfied Customer and Dev Wish 5/5

    By colemaad1
As a premium ProtonMail subscriber for multiple years, I can say that this encrypted paid email service is one of the best decisions you can make for merely quarters a month. WHY BUY? -Easy choice if you take information security an confidentiality seriously. No one wants peeping Tom Tech (aka Google/Apple) to have free access into your life. -Added value of a brand new email inbox. The sad truth is that your email address of 15 years has been bought and sold to a factorial degree. -Ideal as a dedicated inbox for important emails (i.e., financials, insurance, premium services). DEV RECOMMENDATIONS - Search results desperately need swipe/sort and multi-select capabilities. Seems like a rather small ask? As a corporate Outlook user for over a decade, I can say that that said capability has aggregately saved me hours, days (maybe weeks) of my life in an organizational effort. Please add this!
  • Not so private 3/5

    By rahtiray
ProtonMail stores the phone number or email that you use to sign up. That means you are identifiable.
  • so far so good I guess.. 4/5

    By Munchskiin
great app so far! Just one thing missing as far as I can tell... I don’t see a way to select all emails to mark them as read, just the option to make an action on multiple emails at once.
  • No Bitcoin payment automation 3/5

    By a–p
Paid bill via Bitcoin 2 days ago. Got locked out today due to “unpaid” invoice. Suspect that’s because a human manually checks when an invoice is settled in BTC. Great company otherwise.
  • Great service, great support, iOS app is a WIP 4/5

    By mcbobke
The iOS app would benefit from a conversational view of messages rather than splitting them all out. Also, Dark Mode is a must.
  • Great but some flaws 4/5

    By presidentzen1
First, who pays for email? You have to pay if you want to have email groups (like when I would send emails to my class of 12). Not a big deal, but worth mentioning. Also, you pay for storage. Very annoying every few months you have to mass delete emails or else the storage is full. Finally, sometimes you click on the app and just get a black screen. Other than that it’s a halfway decent alternative to Gmail. Unfortunately, I went back to Gmail for the features, but I love what they are trying to do.
  • No full text search?? No threaded message view please! 3/5

    By dtoyd
Thanks for the privacy. Now please add features! Specifically... Full text search!!! I’m stunned that only headers are apparently searched Threaded inbox view Snooze messages for later
  • Useless spam filter & clunky interface 2/5

    By mikyxid
Need options to: turn off spam filter(why do you keep sending emails from Amazon, government and other important emails to spam??), and still the hassle of no email navigation message to message instead of having to go back to inbox. will never upgrade until they make these improvements, but not holding my breath, been waiting years.
  • Needs Active App Development 3/5

    By Miraculous conceptuon
Great private & secure service but far lacking competitors in the quality of its app UI. It hasn't been updated in 2 months, and doesn't even offer a dark mode in 2021. It looks like it was designed in 2015.
  • Great app 4/5

    By FishyMcSwish
It would be 5 stars if it had dark mode. I do a lot of my email reading at night in low light.
  • Forget it...i wish it worked! 1/5

    By EW Follower
Not working, at least not the free account. I don’t receive any mail besides my tests from gmail and proton emails. Tried to switch a few of my accounts and wasn’t receiving verifications, conformations email, nothing. The forwarding option didn’t work as well. The verification email from gmail never arrived, i tried probably 10 times. Disappointed.
  • Great for privacy, but VERY difficult to learn 3/5

    By Dulcinea73
I’d give 5 stars for having the ability to encrypt my emails, and for the discounted price if one pays for an upgraded email account AND the no-log Swiss based VPN, which I have. (The monthly price for 5 email addresses and the VPN is less than the cost of some VPN’s alone.) But the learning curve for learning how to use all the email features is STEEP, and trying to use the “Knowledge Base” is somewhere between a bad joke and a major nightmare. That - plus the fact that there are many standard email features not even available yet - I give 1 star for. So I average the two ratings for 3 stars. The Support folks are very helpful. But I shouldn’t have to email Support and wait 1-2 days for an answer to the simplest of questions - questions that should be answered in any decent Knowledge Base or tutorial. It’s a real shame that there isn’t any easily usable Knowledge Base or adequate tutorial on how to use this needlessly complicated “system”, which isn’t the LEAST bit intuitive. I’ve even considered closing my accounts here, and going back to more mainstream email providers. But I’m sticking with ProtonMail for a while longer, because I’m so adamantly against the data mining practices and general lack of privacy policies of services like Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and the others. I do recommend ProtonMail and their VPN for those who want a higher degree of privacy in their online lives, and who are either very tech savvy - or at least not faint-of-heart - when it comes to mastering the unusually complicated ecosystem that is ProtonMail. But the average user shouldn’t expect a feature-rich email service, or being able to transition to ProtonMail’s platform easily. If one is willing to invest the time and energy to learn from scratch how to do some basic emailing functions, and to spend a lot of time emailing back and forth with Support to get basic questions answered, then this is the email provider for you.
  • One Star Until 1/5

    By 11BravoHotel
Dark Mode goes live, it’s ridiculous that it’s taking this long for it to be available. Do any of you use ProtonMail in low light conditions. Jesus H Christ get it done already. Especially for the Desktop version, I expect better! Finally can be set as default Mail client. Not let’s see if notifications get synced now, because that’s just annoying having notifications not synced in 2020. 4 Stars until further notice. Also a Dark Theme would be easier on the eyes, at night. Just a suggestion
  • Unusable? 1/5

    By rootbeerdan
I wonder if this is just an issue with the iPhone 12 Pro Max but this app is essentially unusable. Refreshing does nothing, new emails don’t show up (except as notifications), and loading anything just runs the circle and nothing comes in. The only way to actually see new emails is to force close the app and reopen it, and sometimes new emails populate. Same on 5G and WiFi (fiber).
  • Best email app 5/5

Replaced all my other email services. Looking forward to proton calendar for iOS. My business is MY business and this app fulfills that.

  • Title 2/5

    By JamesonLVD
Seems okay but could not even get the app to approve my new account after multiple careful attempts.
  • Average 3/5

    By user65
Odd that my initial review was removed. I rated it 1 star due to some issues I had after initial setup. I will note that those issues were resolved by removing and re-adding my email accounts. I still have issues with searching emails. It’s a bit aggravating that I have to login to my old gmail and type the same search string to find a message I imported and have in my new ProtonMail account.
  • Where is threaded email?!? 1/5

    By solo99999
Threaded email has been “coming soon” for 3+ years. Can you at least finish 1 product before embarking on a new journey such as Calendar and Drive? Come on!
  • I love this service. 5/5

    By mgs1025
I can’t wait until ProtonDrive and ProtonCalendar become available on iOS.
  • Dark Mode Needed! 1/5

    By blackstreet23
There is no Dark Mode and your light mode makes my eyes hurt! We want Dark Mode!
  • Trash security 1/5

    By Idot123
I went to log in after 5 months of not using the app and it showed my entire screen full of emails before it asked me to sign in. It wasn’t even a split second either. I could clearly read the emails. These emails are very private to me and if anyone had my phone they would have seen them.

    By fingersteam
When opening the app (my app and phone is updated and current) the first email opens to display the text in the email as though I tapped to read it. This bug has been active for months. I did report it through the app widget bug tab and received a generic response with no follow-up. My app is set up to be on all mail, not sure if that is important to mention. Thanks
  • dark mode & korean - how much longer? 1/5

    By mangoo3
please add: -dark mode (to match OS) -korean language for app /desktop site -larger text options for the app interface (it’s too small at times)
  • keyword search is broken 2/5

    Not worth $5/month
  • May be good on privacy, but needs to be more user-friendly 3/5

    By DailyDrudger
You cannot select all emails in a given folder for quick, mass deletion. You have to go through them at 50 at a time maximum. Also, the mobile app, when you pull down to refresh the inbox, the progress wheel just spins and spins and spins. The only think that would fix it was to reinstall the app.
  • Amazing App but...missing one feature: 4/5

    By dinault
...I could really realy use a “filter”/map or menu option/search for ‘unread’ emails.
  • Wont interface with other email servers 2/5

    By captainjh92
It won’t Interface with other email servers especially Gmail this app used to work long ago I made an account several years ago and it worked great with any email now it is very limited and I think I’m gonna delete it... proton mail you need to make your interface more user friendly to other servers and companies👎 ....
  • slow bad servers 1/5

    By Soluslobo
what is going on now?? i can’t log in the app or the website
  • Review Deleted!? 2/5

    By yyy888
For some reason, my review keeps getting DELETED. Reloading again. App works as described except for a few issues: 1) We need to be able to adjust the font size and color. The tiny gray on white fonts used may be easily read if you are in your 20s but, as you get older, these fonts are more difficult to read. It would be nice to be able to increase the font size and have better contrasting font color on white. Surprised the devs haven't figured this out yet. 2) App badge shows there's one unread message but all messages have been read! There doesn't appear to be a way to reset the badge counter to zero so no badge is displayed.
  • Great Application 4/5

    By guymanstuff
Can we please have dark mode added to the application?
  • Awesome 5/5

    By Carlcal9
I truly love this service, and the hard work these people put into security and privacy. I switched from gmail years ago, and never looked back. I ended up switching to their visionary plan as well, and routing all of my email for my website through it too. I hope their values never change! As long as they remain the same, theyll have me as a life long customer
  • Needs work 2/5

    By Wasted hundreds of $
I have been a paid user of ProtonMail and the VPN client for 4 years now. My account has been hacked many times now, and despite having the old passwords, the date of when I opened the account first, the cc info for how I paid for it over the years - ProtonMail’s support won’t decrypt my old emails such that I can view them once again. Furthermore, when adding an alias, i mistyped it without realizing until after I had submitted it. This resulted in me not being able to use it ... ever. I have written into the support team several times about all of the issues I have experienced to no avail. The email support is so poor for someone who has spent hundreds of dollars on ProtonMail and it’s VPN, I am considering migrating everything into a Microsoft Enterprise for Business with domain capability and Azure to manage aliases. ProtonMail doesn’t have a bridge available to iOS users such that we can use other email clients for email / calendar / contact integration. It gives ONE allowance for Plus subscribers. It doesn’t have the automatic option to separate incoming email vía alias. It also has such limited storage, with no way to store documents like a Google or One Drive. I have never used the calendar since there isn’t integration or functionality with Siri or really anything else. ProtonMail is definitely lagging behind in so many ways that I can’t see how it can remain competitive when other apps are beginning the use of AI as personal assistants with voice dictation and control, addition to calendar and contacts with ease, and clean interfaces where the web browser isn’t required to make changes and / or view security logs. Over 4 years, nothing has changed besides the addition of the VPN client - which slows down my computer tremendously despite choosing the fastest server with a secure core. To say I’m disappointed and have wasted a lot of money is the least - Microsoft “Exchange” or Outlook 365 even has the option to encrypt, and I can’t see G Suite lagging behind much on PKIs - Microsoft and GoDaddy domains also offer the option to back up emails - a stark difference from the decryption for safety that ends up badly damaging those of us who are hacked despite 2FA. ProtonMail won’t even consider a physical security key for 2FA! So I will be migrating out and moving on as my voice simply isn’t heard anywhere - not by customer support, not in the forums, and probably not even here! Thanks but no thanks!
  • New User 5/5

I recently switched my business email to ProtonMail. I’m getting used to the app. I wanted to know if you will have a couple of settings coming in the future. Email conversation grouping ? Flagged Emails

    By Donteattheants
Worth the money for the service. Please make Dark Mode an option.
  • Log in issues 3/5

    By Jojoba Hills
I have the paid plan but am concerned with the log in issues. It had been working fine on my IOS devices and suddenly I tried to log in and it’s telling me that my log in credentials are incorrect. Now the same issue on my MacBook Pro. Major issue for me.
  • Very good at its core features 5/5

    By smurfdeth
ProtonMail itself is a great service; I should’ve migrated out of Gmail long ago. The complaints with app functionality are valid, but really, I love using it as-is. Especially like the ease of reading due to the fast, sensitive vertical scroll. Once you get used to it, scrolling an email is less effort, without the frequent thumb scrolls you’re used to in, well, everything else. I hope they keep this in the redesign coming up.
  • emails stopped by google?signed out? 4/5

    By no one star chaser
This app is doing a lot better but why is it logging me out as I don't have the app? This has happened four times! Plus it won't let me email certain companies! I think google is to blame! Seems like everything is going through their servers.
