I love it although 4/5
Can you add more tools like smudge, clip masks, blendmodes and have more colors for pallets
Simple and Easy to use 5/5
Title says it all. It does what an animator would need <3
Great App, but the Export can be rough. 4/5
By Property Of Brendon Urie
I love this app with all my heart, it’s fairly straight forward and easy to use. My only issue is that I export as gifs due to my animations being so short in length, and when I use more than two or three colors, the whole gif is desaturated so orange looks green, etc. I sent a gif with the right coloration to a friend, and when I went to export it a second time after adding my watermark, the colors desaturated and even when I removed the watermark and tried again the colors wouldn’t go back to normal.
I cannot import audio 5/5
I don’t know what’s the issue. I deleted the app and installed it again before writing this and still when I’m at 0 frames I import my audio and it still doesn’t increase the frames or play when I have plenty of them before importing. But when I open my tap try to add it again it says remove audio like it already exists. But since this isn’t a common problem I’ll still rate a 5. Please help.
Nevermind I literally tried everything and as soon as I go back in the app it just works like magic. Your app is perfect and very inspiring👍 Thank you for working to make this app
I love it but 4/5
I love this app but i have a few nitpicks but I’ll get to the one that is the worst and affects me the most. Rendering I was trying to render a video but it keeps crashing, please fix this.
Awesome app... A few problems 4/5
By jeh sh
This app is AMAZING 😍 I absolutely love it. Although there are a few problems.
1: The UI is not that great, I could sit down with adobe XD for 10 minutes and have a better UI
2: Exporting is horrible, when you export a project and save it and you go and look at it, its frame rate from the editor is cut in half (pls fix)
3: When you are making a new frame it’s kinda a waste of time to select copy make new frame paste and move, if they had a feature where you could turn on continuous framing (When you move to a new frame and everything is automatically copied to the next frame) would be so appreciated.
Overall though, this is the best animating app I have used so far.
Hope this was helpful!
Simply amazing! 4/5
By Ratul Khan
What this app offers for free is just amazing! Would love to have some more drawing tools though.
Makes animation accessible and fun! 5/5
RoughAnimator is delightful to work with, even for beginners. Anyone with modest drawing skill can make a quick GIF in minutes, or 10 seconds of full-motion video in a few hours. Powerful features like layers and draw over/under help keep your images neat, while onion-skinning helps animation newbies like me to gauge motion. You need instant tool access when drawing frame-by-frame animation, so thankfully none are buried in menus. All this with four-platform support and a very reasonable price. My only complaint is that I wish the help were more comprehensive with examples and such.
A WASTE 1/5

I wasted my money on this app... I so complicated and hard to use
I like it, I just wish I could use it 5/5
By Jaywood, C.M.K.
I am not sure if it’s my device or the application itself but the zooming is so laggy, and I have to constantly pinch about five times to get it to zoom in and out of my canvas. It’s aggravating to me because when I am drawing like a lot of people I zoom in and out constantly, (not to mention rotate the canvas every which way) which also requires a lot of time to actually work.
Like I said, I am not sure if it’s just my device, I use a IPad mini 4.
And an Adonit Pixel.
Other then that the application seems pretty straightforward, I would use it a lot, especially since the interface seems pretty easy to use. But this is coming from someone that hasn’t had much screen time with it considering the “problems” I’ve been having. I have read some good reviews and bought this app, eh..
Some regrets? A little.
I’d prefer to buy a nine dollar animation app then brake a 400 something dollar iPad out of aggravation with this app. LOL! )(didn’t ever actually brake it though Thank goodness) That’s just my opinion though. And it could just be my devise, I didn’t see anyone else having this problem so. Other then my problems it seems like a good application. I just wish I knew the issues I would have with it before I bought it.
Thanks for hearing me out, and if this issue of mine is resolved I may eventually download it again, until then I will find another app that is easer for me to work with. I was just trying out apps anyway. So I am still giving a five star review to the developers just in case it is just my devise and not the application. (:
Nice work 5/5
To the developer.
This is a great program and perfect in its current state. I look forward to more features being added. Blending options between layers. Better brushes. Etc. I think it has the potential to be as good as TVpaint. Keep up the good work and I look forward to new releases
Amazing app! 5/5
This app alone has helped me so much with my animation projects in my motion graphics class. A+++! So much fun and easy to use.
Is it just me? 3/5
This app is incredible! It’s easy and very fun to use. I use this app on a lot of my school projects, but I do have a problem that is VERY frustrating. I don’t know if it is because there is a frame limit, but at a certain point I can no longer play my animation inside the app. It’s is not that big of deal, but still annoying and not the only problem. I am currently doing an animation project for school. Of course I was not able to watch my animation in the app, but I could still work on it. That was until earlier today when I went back. I clicked on my animation project and... my screen blacked out and I was kicked out of the app. I have figured out a way to pice the animation together with an editing app, but this is still VERY inconvenient. I’m new to animation. Is this normal?
Stay away from this buggy app 1/5
Lost drawings when using the cycles feature due to some bug, and undo does not recover drawings. Functional programming could have prevented this! You had one job!
Best animation app 5/5
By Jake Lauster
From the beginning of my iPad wielding experience Rough Animator has always had my back. A fluid and quick way to move through frames and customize colors, brushes, and not to mention audio and video imports. Many more great things will come from this app and my creative journey!
Terrible App 1/5
By Student 421793
- No ability to draw straight lines
- No ability to draw shapes
- Very Cumbersome to use
- Very low quality writing response
How do I get a refund??
New line stabilizer feature. 2/5
So, I went in to RoughAnimator to make a wolf walking animation, and there was a new feature. Draw a circle like a sketch, boom, it’s smaller. I can’t turn it off. This app is hard to use anyways.
Best animation program I’ve ever used but... 4/5
When I try to add audio, in my files are my options are clear/see through. Can you help me?
I love it but it needs work 3/5
This is the only animation app on the App Store that has a timeline, You can rotoscope, you can add audio and images and that’s amazing, but for whatever reason where this app falls short is the brush selection. I don’t not see any option or anywhere online to download brushes or have any real knowledge to make brushes myself. This is a big problem because I noticed that my line art in this app looks kind of ugly. The standard brush looks like a bunch of tiny dots it should be a straight line, like a vector line even. And there is a severe lack brushes on this app and it needs to be fixed. I could easily give this five stars if there were brushes that make the art look sharper , it’s such a fantastic app for animators on a budget , Please fix this, I would even buy brushes if it were offered in this app. There needs to be more choices for brushes, I cannot stress that enough.
The only animation software for iPad 5/5
This tool is the perfect tool for making clips of animations for a finalized product. Note that this program alone will likely not be enough to finish an entire project in, but the one thing it is very good at is making animations. This is a raster animator, which means there is no key framing and motion tweens, so be aware of that, but if you are looking for a cel animation program, look no further than rough animator! The timeline is simple, but well displayed, makes sense and is easy to use. The brushes that come default feel similar to most Japanese animation and drawing tools (paint tool sai and CSP are my my reference points) and respond greatly to he Apple Pencil. The settings are quite deep as well so you can customize the app to work however you want. Out of every animation app I've tried to use, this is the only one that really does the job and the only one that is worth the cost.
Just be aware that this program is light and fast. You should be using this to get basic animation drafts out or even lines and base colors for professional products. The audio control is lacking, and there is no easy way to make a "camera shift" like in flash. But if you're a seasoned animator, you should know that scenes should get compiled into SV or Premier and finalized there.
If you are interested in a professional grade animation software, you can't find anything better than this. If you're looking to get a start in cel animation, this is a great place to start with its streamlined GUI. And my note to the developer: keep up the good work. This is the most fun program to animate in on any device. I just pick up the iPad and start drawing. It's so fast, easy, and fun to use! Great job!!!
Importing audio?! 3/5
This is a pretty good app in my opinion, but the audio is making me rage.
I am on an IPad Pro and I want to import audio, but I am unable to which is deeply upsetting. I’d rather use Flipaclip than Rough Animator.
Such a waste of money for me. I had hopes up for this app and hoped to rate it 5 stars, now I don’t have any choice but to listen by another device while trying my best not to put it off sync.
Problem, please fix 4/5
So I've been using rough animator for a few weeks, and I highly recommend it, but there is a problem where I would try to add some audio into the app and it crashes. I've been trying to fix this for so long. Nothing is working. Please find a fix for this before I move on to another app. Please NOTICE THIS!!!
I love it 5/5
It is a good app for iPads
Can’t able to write 1/5
Can anyone help me. I can’t write on rough animator
I’ve been wanting to really get into animation for a while and get a nice animation app. This seemed like a good option and I can’t say I was wrong. The interface is nice and I like being able to actually adjust frame rate properly. I do have a couple gripes though.
First of all I keep having issues with lag. I haven't had any problem with this in any other app, so I do know it’s the app itself. (I do have a pro iPad by the way) Basically when I have a file size larger than like a hundred or so pixels it just.. lags.. really bad. My lines drag really far behind my Apple Pencil and it’s really unfortunate considering I do really like this app. My other issue is with brushes. I do wish that there was more methods of editing them. Maybe that’s a bit too needy though considering this is just an animation app.
Anyways, for just general animation I may have to stick with something more barebones that lags less, but this is a solid app!
A few issues , but other than that the best animation program on the App Store 4/5
Has everything you need to start learning animation. Proper timeline, onion skins, importing assets, its all there. However it is a touch sluggish and while it says you can import multiple images at once, you cant. You cant save pallets and theres only about 10 colors you can save at a time. No idea how you can import different brushes. If there’s solutions to these problems, it’d be an easy 5 star. But its dragged down a little by the issues i brought up here
Great animation app however... 3/5
This app is great for animation and I am very happy with it, however there are some very frustrating bugs that need to be fixed. Whenever I try to animate something and close the project and exit the app it will be erased. This is very infuriating because many of the projects I have worked hard on have been erased. Also, when I import audio it will not even show up and there is nothing even though it say ‘Remove audio’. I hope these bugs are fixed and until they are, I am sad to say that I will have to find a substitute.
best animation software on ios 5/5
really good animation software!
Good but just one thing 5/5
I would like to be able to add voiceovers to my animations.
Please help meh 3/5

Hello, I think this app is a great animation app, and I LOVE using! But.... I can’t use it anymore! None of the tools work! For example, the drawing tool: it doesn’t work! When I try and draw, nothing comes up! It’s the same with the rest of the tools. Idk if I’m doing something wrong, but it’s not working for me
Pretty great animation app. It’s the best you can get on iPad honestly, however I’d add something that can let you navigate the timeline and audio better, and let you cut it! To those on iPads that may have issues with wanting audio, but not wanting to pay for Apple Music, get google drive and upload your downloaded MP4’s from there. All in All it fulfills my personal needs.
i love everything about this app, i just wish it wouldnt lag after making a short video, like it lags alot after 3 minutes of video
I have an Apple Pencil, but I can only animate with it 5/5
When I use rough animator I have fun but there’s one problem. IF YOU HAVE AN APPLE PENCIL YOU CAN ONLY USE THE APPLE PENCIL!!!!
I Forgot how to animate with anything else
A well spent Five Bucks 4/5
Great animation app. All the basics you need to make lovely animations. Although I would like it if I were able to have a wider selection of brushes the ones it has get the job done. I also would enjoy it more if the brush ran smoother. In all a very great app that doesn’t bombard you with ads *cough cough* FLIPACLIP. Much better than FlipaClip...
Easy to animate 5/5
In my opinion, the app is good And worth the price. It’s really easy to start animating In only a few minutes of testing it. The format is simple but easy to use:D
I can’t draw on this app 1/5
I’m sorry to say this but I can’t draw???? I can use the fill in tool but that is it. No matter what I do I can’t seem to draw any lines or erase anything. This disappoints me severely because I paid for this app and when I pay for an app I expect its basic and crucial functions to at least work. This is disappointing, but I hope there is a fix or something for this problem. I had high hopes
Please add Logitech crayon support 4/5
The best animating app on the AppStore but please and support for the Logitech crayon so I can animate with it. Thank you
Rotate don’t work 3/5
Its a good simplified animation app. I use it sometimes for animatics. It would be nice if rotate canvas works.
Love this app 4/5
I use this app to make fully colored and lined map parts!! It’s honestly a really great app to animate on but maybe not so beginner friendly.... there are quite a few aspects of the app I still don’t understand and I’ve been animating for several years. I’m leaving this review so the app makers may consider opening a Q&A/tutorial page. I think it would be very helpful for those starting out on the app. -Lily
Edit: unfortunately the onion skin on my app has stopped working altogether. My resolution is set to full and the onion skin opacity is up high enough to wear I can see it in not sure what to do.
Very good. 4/5
I’ve started using this app in my animation class and it’s the best I’ve found so far. For me the biggest thing it’s missing is the ability to share/transfer RoughAnimator files so students can change devices or send them home.
Great app 5/5
Little squares 1/5

This is perfect for hand drawn animation. Super easy to use. Untethered me from my desk. Allows me to block out my ideas and refine the movement and timing and then export them to Harmony or use as reference in Blender. I can do skill drills like walk cycles and the flour sack in this friendly environment. I am not looking for a puppet rigging tool on my iPad...that should be left to Harmony or MOHO or Adobe. But for the creative work of getting the acting flushed out, arcs, anticipation, etc...that is best done in a tool like this.
The best in animation program available for IOS 4/5
Amazingly there are more than one option for animation apps here, HOWEVER this is the only one that has a friendly UI, not going to burn a hole in your wallet, it’s fast, all substance, no BS, and great for roughing something out absolutely ANYWHERE (Heck I’ve been animating in bed and it’s hella comfy) and if you feel up for it, you can make a fully fleshed out animation in this program, colors, clean lines, everything! Granted, this kind of a basic traditional 2D animation program, no peg system or anything stupidly fancy so don’t expect the ability to make parallax backgrounds, 2D rigs or importing brushes from other programs like Procreate or Clip Studio Paint but that’s not the point of this, because it’s in the name “Rough” and I absolutely love it for that. It’s very easy to pick up, saves instantaneously right as you close out of the project, and I can’t recommend this enough.👌👌👌
I do have a suggestion to give it 5 stars from me, and that’s a dark mode. I personally don’t like melting my eyes out, that’s just me, a bit of an odd opinion I know, but it’d make working so much better and possibly more visually pleasing. Just throwing it out there, but it’d be nice as an option in a future update, thanks! 😘
Two things: 3/5
1) It loads upside down.
The bottom of an app should be the left of the device. The iPhone is held this way due to speaker placement. The iPad sits this way when using a Smart Cover.
2) The UI displays behind the notch on the iPhone.
It’s great! But- 4/5
By Wolf Link Lover
So I just purchased the app, I finished my animation and wanted to export it as a gif, however when I render gif and save it to my photos the colors look off. I tried again and export it to a gif and the colors get even worse. What is happening?
Amazing, but could fix a few things 3/5
I think Rough Animator is the best animating app on iPads. It’s easy, smooth, and it doesn’t crash. Some thing I wish were easier is placing an image in. I wish this was easier because when I’m adding in backgrounds, I draw from the same dimensions as the animation. Unfortunately rough animator doesn’t have a “center” option, so you always have to do it yourself. I’ll end up with bits of my background cut off of the color of the orginial background showing because I didn’t stretch it down enough. Another thing I find troublesome is adding audio. I’ve found a way to add audio,
but it’s much harder than the way I’m about to explain. Adding in music from your iTunes is super frustrating because it doesn’t work. I click on the option to add music from my library, and the app crashes. Please fix this. One last thing is TRANSPARENCY. PLEASE... fix this. I’m having trouble editing my animations because I cannot export an animation with transparency. It’s SUPER frustrating because it’s such an easy thing to fix. PLEASE fix the transparency exports before anything else.
