Found a mushroom, flower, or bug, and not sure what it is? Open up the Seek Camera to see if it knows! Drawing from millions of wildlife observations on iNaturalist, Seek shows you lists of commonly recorded insects, birds, plants, amphibians, and more in your area. Scan the environment with the Seek Camera to identify organisms using the tree of life. Add different species to your observations and learn all about them in the process! The more observations you make, the more badges you’ll earn! This is a great app for families who want to spend more time exploring nature together, and for anyone who wants to learn more about the life all around them. KID-SAFE Seek does not require registration and does not collect any user data by default. Some user data will be collected if you choose to sign in with an iNaturalist account, but you must be over 13 or have your parents permission to do so. Seek will ask permission to turn on location services, but your location is obscured to respect your privacy while still allowing species suggestions from your general area. Your precise location is never stored in the app or sent to iNaturalist unless you sign in to your iNaturalist account and submit your observations. Our image recognition technology is based on observations submitted to and partner sites, and identified by the iNaturalist community. Seek is created by the iNaturalist team. iNaturalist is a joint initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. Seek was originally created with support from HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and enhanced with support from Our Planet on Netflix and WWF.

  • Neatest app ever 5/5

    By shineintexad
I love this app. I had no idea of the biodiversity on my land. I find myself trying to identify and gather information on all plants. I have even transplanted several to my garden area.
  • Easy to use 5/5

    By graykitten55
This app is very easy to use and has allowed me to identify many native plants I really enjoy it
  • Really cool 5/5

    By vi0liiin girl
So I love the idea of this app because I like collecting things and taking photos, but I don’t use it much. That’s my own fault for not ever going outside 😅 If you like being outside and taking walks this would be a great app to have. It usually recognised the photos quite well, as long as it is a clear picture!
  • Unable to get camera to work 1/5

    By User47: JL Johnson
I agreed to share camera, it still won’t work. What a letdown
  • I was really excited 3/5

    By ChelseaPfluger
My daughter is a nature enthusiast and we go on a lot of nature walks. I was so excited when I heard about this app because I can answer all of her questions with the snap of my camera but when I click on the camera button of the app nothing happens. I know it’s not my phone because it’s brand new. I really hope they fix this bug I’d love to use it.

So I was recommended this app and thought it sounded really cool so I just got it and the camera button doesn’t even take me to take a picture and just acts like I didn’t even press it.
  • Poor 1/5

    By grumpyew
Works fine on my android phone but will not advance beyond initial screen on ipad. Click camera control & it freezes.
  • Camera not working? 1/5

    By marybethrobbins
Could be a bug with the iOS 14 update. I click on the camera button, and my phone gives me the green dot at the top that the camera has been turned on, but the camera does not open in the app. I just see the Home Screen. I hope this gets fixed soon because I’m excited to use this app!
  • Camera worn open 1/5

    By PaddyWack7928
I just got this app because my friends loved it and when I try using it the camera will never open. I’ve given it access to the camera and location while using the app, but still... never opens. I can’t seem to find a way to contact support to help trouble shoot this issue and I’m over trying to remedy the problem so I’m just going to delete this app. What’s the use of the app if I can’t even take pics? 😑
  • Camera 4/5

    By MomTryingToUseApp
Camera won’t open up to take the photos. I agreed to use camera and my settings show camera is on. Please reach out or update the app. Thank you!

    It does not work
  • Like Shazam for nature 5/5

    By Bugloaf
I really love the Seek app. What’s that bug? What’s this wildflower. It’s like Shazam for nature. I’m always amazed at how quickly it finds things.
  • The best identification app ever! 5/5

    By Michelle&boys
It might not have as many functions as the other identification apps, but it can scan any living organism. Other apps can only identify one kingdom of animals, things like; birds bug and plants. But this app can scan all of them! I honestly think this app is underrated.
  • Very addicting 3/5

    By Poochifer1
I’m not gonna give this app five stars, because it definitely has some flaws. I pointed my camera at an apple for 6 minutes and in all that time the circles never filled up, which was very frustrating. However it’s a very addicting app. I would like to see more improvements in the future. I’m lowering this by a star, because I took 32 pictures of a dolphin and it continually said We believe this is a member of the oceanic dolphin family!! 32 pictures!
  • This could really help improve the app! 5/5

    By ahehdyjend
This app is great and super fun, but would it be possible to give trees there own category for better organizing? And if not that, at least a way so you can move around your finds to better organize them. Thank you and keep up the good work! 😊
  • Disappointed 2/5

    By SlitherandVine
I so badly wanted this app to work. I absolutely love the idea of it! Unfortunately it didn’t identify a single plant correctly. I tested it out on some of my house plants. It identified both my monstera adonsonii and my peperomia serpans as a ‘golden pothos’. It couldn’t come up with a result for my creeping fig, or my duckfoot ivy.
  • Change your life. Hikes will never be the same 5/5

    By firebird
This is honestly the coolest app I’ve ever downloaded. I took it on my hike yesterday and it made the experience unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It blew my mind.
  • Needs scientific names 4/5

    By Yet another Jules
Good app so far as ID goes, but my pet peeve is that it only shows the common name of the object. Since common names vary from place to place, adding the scientific name would be more than helpful. Also possibly add an option to link to additional information on the species.
  • Amazing 5/5

    By Mister Microphone
My new favorite app. Like another reviewer said, it’s like Pokémon go for nature
  • Love this app! 4/5

    By Dank327
I’ve been using the app for a couple of weeks now and I’ve had lots of fun. I’ve found over 200 organisms and I’m just getting started. I do have some suggestions for the developers. The app is horrible at identifying trees and mushrooms. It hasn’t been able to identify any of the oaks or pines in my neighborhood no matter what angle I use. It also won’t identify a lot of the mushrooms I’ve found. I’m also not sure what the “other” category is for. I wish that there was a way to sort organisms besides the order you found them in. I’ve started a spreadsheet on my own for the 175+ plants I’ve found. Lastly, the species that pop up on the home screen for my area aren’t super accurate. I know for a fact the one of the species lives north of me and I have never found one In my area. I definitely recommend this app for anyone interested in nature.
  • Not bad but..... 4/5

    By JamingJinouga
Aside from the glitches I just feel like it should have more information like how to tell a male from a female and where it fits in the food chain maybe mating times even an extra section or something that tells you what kind of threat it could pose to you I guess I COULD google it but it would be a lot nicer if I could just see the info and go “ok so that can kill me I’ll just go over here now”
  • Great! 4/5

    By Wolfie22$
This app is great, I only have problems with moss, mushrooms, and some trees. It is usually accurate and enjoy it. “I’m not taking pictures of grass! Why would I do that? :)”
  • Seek is Top Three 5/5

    By SafeLibraries
Seek is outstanding. It has opened a whole new universe to me. Almost instantly identifies plants and animals. It’s like being on a StarTrek mission and your the medical officer and your tricorder records all the new species of plants and animals. No exaggeration, one of the top three apps I have. Absolutely get this, and yes, I’m just a user like you, not an employee of the providers. If you have kids, this app is a must for you to get them outdoors. So fascinating. As an adult, I use this everywhere I travel. Love this so much.
  • Great app!!! Few suggestions. 5/5

    By Music man Franklin
I love this app me and brother have made it into a small competition on who can scan the coolest animals and plants. -bookmark plants animals to quickly find what I’m looking for so I don’t have to scroll so much. -Let me check all the species of plants and animals in my area on one page. -If an plant or animal is wrongly ID let me take it off my observation list when I come back to it. -Friends list so I can compare my challenges and achievements with my friends. Overall love this app and will be using probably for the rest of my life. Keep up the good work. :)
  • Right 75% of the Time 3/5

    By MurphMom10
When I first discovered this app, while we were visiting Oklahoma, I was extremely impressed. However the people that showed me had the newest iPhones with excellent cameras. I have not had as much success, now that it’s on my slightly older iPhone, or bc I’m now in Iowa. But to be honest, it’s now very frustrating and disappointing. Many times it will say it is almost at a species, but after trying for 5 to 10 minutes on a few plants, not kidding, it still has not detected a species!! After that long I gave up on identifying a willow, an African violet and a couple other plants. Other times, it gets to a species, only to be wrong. Probably the most frustrating thing about this, is that once it determines a species, even if it’s incorrect, it saves it to my observations and I have no idea how to delete those. So now I have multiple saved “observations” that are literally wrong. And if I choose to take a picture and try to save an observation before it has reached species, it may briefly tell me the family or genus, which I find helpful, but apparently it does not save this information! So I cannot go back and review this helpful information since it did not reach species status! Overall I enjoy this app, but wish there was a way to delete observations, and a way to save “incomplete” observations, even if it hasn’t reached species.
  • One step closer to a Star Trek Tricorder 4/5

    By Zearin Galaurum
It’s pretty awesome being able to ID organisms by just holding them in the frame of a camera! Moving critters are tricky to get. But it’s still rewarding to “collect” as many images from all the branches of the tree of life as you can. I have only 2 complaints: 1. The relationship between this app and iNaturalist needs more explanation. Yes, I know Seek “gets its data” from iNaturalist. But although I logged into my iNaturalist account in Seek, it’s not at all obvious if, how, or when my observations are shared with the greater iNaturalist online community. 2. Photos taken in Seek do not have any camera metadata attached to them! Seek makes it optional whether to include observations in the Photos app. I like to. But there is no way for me to filter observations taken on my older iPhone vs. my new iPhone, because there is no metadata on the phone/camera model on Seek photos. (If any devs are reading this, please add this feature! BONUS POINTS: Allow me to designate an album in Photos for my Seek observations.) Despite these things, this is a pretty phenomenal app. If you have any interest in the natural world, this is a fantastic example of how technology can support curiosity and exploration, and allow personally-driven learning.

This is a great app to have for people who are nature lovers. Especially with young kids.
  • This is a great app 5/5

    By ramen UwU
Very good, accurate and literally if you look at picture insect or some other very good ones, your like yessss this one, then you have to pay for a subscription. THIS IS free and provides you that you can identify BUGS, ANIMALS, PLANTS and more! And it’s free!!!! Mostly like picture insect only identifys insects! And you have to pay? This is the greatest app ever. Also you just need to be patient with the camera to get the right answer.
  • Great app that makes identifying species fun! 5/5

    By Chaselikethebank9987654
Awesome app for identifying species. Works great most of the time, some species are difficult to get an exact read on, but it’s amazing to be able to just pull out my camera and get the exact name of a plant or animal in seconds. The challenges and badges make it fun as well. The only suggestion I have is to put a button for the flashlight to be on for nighttime observations because otherwise you need to bring a separate flashlight to get a good read on anything.
  • App needs to be updated... 3/5

    By NoDoubt!
I downloaded this app so I could start identifying all the animals and birds that visited my backyard. I have had so many issues with the app identifying what I have the camera looking at, even when the creature is very close. Since I have an iPhone and it takes good pictures, I would take clear pictures and then try in the app to identify, I think all of my pictures are marked as “cannot identify.” Even when I use the app and camera, I can have the camera right on a creature and it barely ever tells you what it is. I gave the a rating of 3 because it is a good idea and would be great if it actually worked better. I hope it is updated soon.

  • Great app 4/5

Gave 4 stars because once it identifies, I want more information about the species. Even just a link to Wikipedia.
  • Love this app 5/5

    By sshopw
I am so impressed with this app. It has identified more bugs, flowers, plants, etc than I can count. It has given us a name for some different plants we have in the yard that we have always wondered what they were. Get this app, you will not be disappointed.
  • ID’s Made Even Easier 5/5

    By "5788"
Great app for quick ID’s and as a companion app to iNaturalist.
  • Lots of fun but 4/5

    By cjms2019h
Wish it gave more info on plant description and uses or a convenient link to do so. Like the fact it wont give species unless almost sure.
  • Please Advise 2/5

Will not allow me to sign up???
  • Good, but one thing... 4/5

    By srm3030
I wish there were a way to have the flash on. Some lightings are just too dark to see anything and it would be super beneficial to have the flash on the camera.
  • Customer Review 5/5

  • Love it 5/5

    By Seeport
Considering the monumental task Seek has set for itself, (identifying the whole flora and fauna of the world); with the exception of a few blips along the way, I think it is an amazing app. Thank you, thank you, thank you developers!
  • Field trip to the Farm 5/5

    By Phoenixx4
This app is wonderful! We own a farm in Tennessee and have 4 grandKids, 8-13 years old. While working out on the farm we all do enjoy identifying and classifying everything of interest that we see! Sooo educational. Their class will be coming for a field trip outside... distancing in the sunshine!!!
  • Great idea: ⬆️Functionality 3/5

    By GladIdidn'tpay$
Great idea but does seem to save my observations?
  • Has potential to be amazing 2/5

    By Muser123
Has potential to be amazing and a great tool to enjoy the outdoors. However, it has not been able to identify many things that should easily be identified. Until then, it gets 2 stars- the idea is great!
  • Can’t identify 2/5

    By fox mew 🦊🦊
I used the app for some moths or tiny butterflies I found and it didn’t work even when I took a very detailed picture it STILL wouldn’t identify

I am so thrilled with this app. It’s allowed me to identify so many species of plants and insects. Just reached the 75 species count.
