The Economist Espresso app reviews

  • Quick lap around the world 5/5

    By JACurious
Expresso can be read in less than 10 minutes. I start here and then dig into the details with Apple news. Topics are broad in scope with more economic news than most.
  • Economist Espresso 5/5

    By Clive's alive
If you, like me, don't have time to read newspapers, then the Espresso is perfect. Succint yet informative, brief yet authoritative, it will satisfy without costing valuable time.
  • Concise and timely 5/5

    By habitmelon
Just the right dose of news first thing in the morning.

  • Best news app ever! 5/5

    By BB8503
This is an incredible news app! I've never felt more motivated than now to keep up to date with the news. This app carefully selects a handful of stories each day to read and you can track your progress by checking the boxes next to each story. Easy to use, excellent journalism, up-to-date and objective news briefings. Highly recommended!!!
  • Great way to start the day! 5/5

    By Kappa Blank
As a wealth manager, I need to stay abreast of the headlines. Espresso is the perfect shot of information first thing in the morning. Concise, objective, and topical, The Economist has a winner here.
  • With my coffee 5/5

    By elgaberino
After scripture and meditation, and brewing strong joe, this app has become my next-step morning ritual. It offers a bite-size overview of interesting developments around the world every morning, with no propagandist urgency, no yellow journalism, no clickbait titles, no SEO writing, no gossip, no editorial errors, no long-winded diatribes, nor any videos. The POTUS is only ever mentioned in connection with important policy or diplomacy developments. This review, at the word “review” just there, is already nearly as long as one of the six articles you’ll read daily on this app. Its brevity breeds pith and factuality. I find it a refreshing contrast against the backdrop of other news sources’ click-driven sensationalism or televised 24-hour news cycle propaganda. Stories do not employ irrational persuasive tools, neither plucking fears nor repeating the same claim over and over. Ads are rare, well-curated, usually gorgeously designed and targeted to executives or investors, and do not appear on news pages. (Content subject matter is 5/5 stars.) Headlines feature the occasional tasteful pun to motivate curiosity. The writing is superior though not always superb: sometimes the sentences are unwieldy or oddly structured. (Editorial quality is 4/5 stars.) Graphic design is minimal classicist: our grandparents’ timeless newsprint might look like this once reimagined as an app. Copy is poured amid vivid photos through stately color-block panels. In terms of user experience, this will merely tell you a few key things, then say “that’s all for today!” Sharing an article is easy. The UI is cleanly designed, a swipe left-to-right system tracked by an unimposing checklist-like feedback display of the user’s progress through the morning’s snippets. No glitch or mislaid element appears in this elegant program. (Design is 5/5 stars.)
  • Great app. Only one issue. 4/5

    By Craponaspatula
Love the app and its simplicity. The only downside are the adverts. As a paid subscriber, it is annoying to have to endure ads. Either don’t charge for Espresso and run ads, or charge and don’t run ads.
  • Just what it ought to be 5/5

    By Pdpowers
All of the news blurbs are just the right length—informative but very concise and condensed. No frills or fluff, just a quick briefing to start the day.
  • Good but can easily get better 4/5

    By vadmeste
    - Reading long paragraphs is not pausible in iPhone 8 due to the little space between lines - Selecting the date in Settings doesn’t make much sense for me, it is better to move it in the main screen. - Ads don’t make sense for me for a monthly subscription - What about a funny comic for sunday? Keep the good work!
  • Eliminate ads 3/5

    By Tillbs
Paying for access to the app should eliminate the need for ads.
  • Excellent 5/5

    By rainierjosereyes
Haven’t stopped since my professor assigned it was weekly reading. Love the espresso version & the audio clips. Thanks for providing this service. Sincerely, rainier j. reyes, Des Moines, Washington, USA

I love this little morning brief from the Economist. It keep me in the loop on the news, both big and small.
  • Works well for me 5/5

    By Tuad
This app has functioned well for me. It’s a quick way to get an idea of significant world events each day, with market statistics and links to read more as well, though the options to learn more are limited if you don’t subscribe to the magazine.
  • Morning pop of news morsels 5/5

Well written and diverse stories that are easy to consume.
  • Good breakfast read 5/5

    By 22reverieperson
Love skimming through the succinct blurbs to start my day with some general awareness of the world 🌍 even if I don’t understand all the politics or numbers. I read this version of the economist to fulfill my curiosity then I confess, I usual switch back to scrolling through instagram
  • Beyond the financial & Economics 5/5

    By Beneteau395
I found the constant articles daily, The Expresso is cuts to the meat; finance and economics, covering social issues and political issues which round the foundations of civil society. As all aspects converge on the Economics, the issue of scarcity & maximizing utility. All behavior, Social & Political are fundamentally occurring by Economic decisions! That’s what Expresso brings you in a daily brief!
  • fix the notification 4/5

  • Ecenomist Espresso 5/5

    By Alan Ducane
Perfect bite-sized news stories to get you ready for the day. Maps, charts, clever writing, key stats - it’s all there in a simple, nifty lay-out. Aptly named, too: it goes perfect with your first cup of coffee (Kopi Luwak, surely?). Recommended for basically anyone who can read.
  • A NEW DAY 5/5

    By Chipper Flipper
I enjoy the concise and quick selection to start my day.
  • Keep the Expresso coming! 5/5

    By Rlynm
I recently subscribed to The Economist and Expresso has been a great lead-in. I feel like I'm more in tune with the news without being overwhelmed. Even when I miss a day, I can easily catch up because it's so concise.

Don’t pay for this app until it gets rid of ads
  • Double espresso please! 5/5

    By Thai student 111
Brilliant idea. I will sign up for sure but 10 stories would be better than 6. At least expand the number of headlines a bit.
  • Great for quick news 5/5

    By slushmo
It’s hard to find substantial but short articles. Right now, Espresso seems to be the best at it. This is for when you don’t feel like committing to a full article, but still want to learn the latest facts.
  • Best News App 5/5

  • Boiled down to a science 5/5

    By Blissta!
I love this side app, hooked along with the Economist issues, gives me a good quick brief in the mornings before I get down time to open my long form issue. Different versions of a great thing are always welcome. Shout out to the writers and editors, excellent journalism, editing, and writing work. A steady rock in the rough seas of news lately.
  • Not getting better .... 3/5

    By Vizitei
I have used the app for at least 5 years now. It’s my usual cycling companion. Little by little I have watched the engineering decline and judgement grow worse. Bluetooth buffering has been a consistent flaw that they can’t seem to get right. On certain devices when there is a pause, the resumption is delayed. Poor QA practices. UI is not really improving and in the audio section is plain bad. I pay for the subscription. Can I expect not to have to “swipe left” to avoid the upfront ad? The swipe is poorly done so 3 out of times you end up clicking. That’s called a clickbait - is that Economist wishes? When first introduced, it was annoying. Now that it is always shown even when you are simply returning to continue on the article you were reading or listening to, it’s just plain offensive. You think that extra half a cent worth the damage to you brand’s image? Poor judgement on the app diminishes a great magazine.
  • Show ADs after subscribing? 3/5

This app is good, but doesn’t support iPad. Only works fine with iPhone
  • Quick and to the point. 5/5

    By GreenMandrake
Love this app; I downloaded it with my new subscription. It’s layout is very appealing. Night mode option is great. I feel like I’m getting relevant news without having to scroll through social media B.S. 🤗 😏👍🏽😎
  • To the Point and Insightful 5/5

    By Gines Passmonte
Espresso is the perfect way to start the day. Concise news about stories you won’t see on the morning news.
  • Brief, yet complete 5/5

    By denniseck
Provides easy access to an overview of the latest news, and links to extended coverage where necessary. Summary is reliable and good for prioritizing reading. Clean interface, slow startup and access on older devices.

  • Morning News Quick Run Down 5/5

    By Eagle Eye 7
The Economist Espresso provides a short list of of world news highlights that's detailed sufficiently enough for a great understanding of the real news provided. The Economist editors do their list well, which includes a highlight of the world stock markets. Their news offerings are always on par and written well! Thanks Economist Espresso Team! Those end quotes are really nice!
  • Best News App 5/5

    By Rhone B
The Economist has always been one of the most sophisticated sources of news out there. The fact that they were able to connect with the new “A.D.D.” age of America is another sign of their keen sense. This is my favorite app and I start everyday with a cup of Joe and Espresso.
  • Loving it 5/5

    By Mb5719
Love the fact that it’s short, it gives me the gist of the story, don’t have to read 800 word story to know the basics. If I want more then I search, but this is just great. Of course for a US audience there’s too many UK news, but I’ll take it, nice to see outside our borders.
  • The app is fast and easy 5/5

    By Denis_Not taken name
Couldn’t be more happy with this app as I use it for 2 years with no issues whatsoever. Consistent, easy, fast, quality content. Thank you!
