Totally loses the feel of a magazine, unlike others. Stodgy navigation. Inelegant. planning to revert to hardcopy.

I have only read two or three issues using the app. It seems to work very well. I have not encountered the issues mentioned in some of the negative reviews. It is easy to navigate and correlates well with the print issue, which my wife reads.

This was my favorite news app, but the latest update really made it unusable! It’s now less user friendly, uglier, and above all the articles wont load, a problem that wasn’t there before the update. Please fix this update fast before you lose customers!

Now the greatest weekly content feels like a B- blog. Content is great, but the functionality and appearance stinks. How could this be put out as an update? Who thought this was an improvement?
I thought the new update is much easier to navigate! No more unnecessary functions!
Unbelievably bad update. 1/5
The update is so incredibly bad. Here are some things I am no longer able to do:
I cannot read the 10 things I need I need to know offline. This was key to me as a business traveler as I would update the article list before boarding and would have it available during flight. Nope, no more. Update: the functionality of this is 50/50. Sometimes the option to read the “latest news” is there, other times it is not.
Another thing I really enjoyed was the ability to share articles with friends and family instantly. Well, the new update eliminates that feature too. What was a great advertisement to friends now is a link to sell them the mag - a forced sales pitch. Great job.
The new format is obnoxious at the opening screen. Everything is clunky and loads slowly. The pictures in various articles, some you can see full screen when you tap on them, but others, you cannot. Absolutely awful.
Sometimes I am able to “turn/flip” pages, other times I am only able if I scroll to top of article - who approved the release of this app in such a state?!
I honestly will be ending my iPad subscription and will revert to the paper copy from my local library. The new update is that bad.

I’m another long-time Week subscriber, and I still value its content as much as I ever have, but this new app format is an insult. There’s not one feature or function in it that feels like an improvement. Everything about the new app makes it harder to read, harder to navigate, less useful, and less friendly. I also plead for a return to the old format, or at least, something closer to it.

Weighting content more heavily than implementation, 4.5*.
Here’s why I’m knocking off a full star:
Updating app permanently removed my saved articles. Developers: look up meaning of word “save”. Incorporate that concept into transitions. Software development 101, people—users want to keep their data. Other apps do it. Ask Apple or someone if you don’t know how to code it.
Publishers: demand that your app development team delivers a product worthy of your content. Don’t let them screw up this way.
So, still 1 star for a rocky update transition.
3 stars for the new app itself—mostly changes to formatting. No significant change in user experience other than nuisance of slightly different reading/saving workflow. Yeah, I need another unnecessary learning curve on my iPhone pretty much like I need another hole in my head. Think when you rewrite a user interface, people. Try to make the user’s transition experience seamless.
5 stars for content. The Week’s still my go-to one-stop shop for what’s going on out in the big bad world, executive summary version. Decent international coverage compared to other weeklies. Thoughtful editorial harvesting.
Josh Redding commented once in a talk that this is the 45 minutes he spends to catch up on all the stories he isn’t working on himself so he doesn’t come of as an uninformed over-focused idiot at Washington cocktail parties.
That pretty much sums it up: The news you need in a hurry.
Good work there, keep it up.
iTunes subscription on iPad/phone, latest issue came up last night. I started to download it & the message about updating to the new app came up. So I updated and restored purchases as told.
Now all the past issues show up and can be downloaded *except* only last week’s issue appears (March 1, ostrich cover) with View & Subscribe options. No latest issue.
And I’ve lost all my saved articles...!!!
Come on, guys, test your app updates before you release them.
Great magazine, terrible app update 1/5
If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, especially if the fix is not a fix, but is instead a way to drive away readers. I LOVE THE WEEK, and have been a loyal customer for years. Never saw a need to update the app. In fact, it was one of my more enjoyable reading experiences on the iPad. With this new update, plain and simple, it doesn’t work. I am able to download issues, but when I open them, the cover is the only thing that will actually load. Since I am a “digital only” subscriber, I have not been able to read this publication since the update. If this update is not fixed by the time my subscription lapses, I unfortunately will not be resubscribing. Please fix this, and give me back The Week!

I've tried several magazine apps and this is far and away the best one. Good flow from article to article and from table of contents to any article. Wish they were all this good.
They have changed the layout of the app as well as the layout of the magazine on the screen and it's like stepping back in time. Feels like 1980.

Since the new version the daily updates is gone. This is my way of getting the news without turning on the TV! I love the week magazine because it’s concise and to the point without any sensationalism that I can find. But what happened to the daily updates?

Need an even bigger font with grey contrast option. Wide format is hard to read. Fix this or go back to old app.

I love The Week’s content, but this new app is terrible. I have only been able to read one issue in the last month. The directions are awful and incorrect, asking for an 11 digit subscription number, but not recognizing that. I contacted customer service and was told to only use 9 digits. I can see all my account information, but when I click on an issue and click on View, I can only see the headline; no article ever appears. I can only see a spinning circle. The other option given is to subscribe, which I already do. I have installed and uninstalled the app several times to no avail. I was extremely frustrated and disappointed in this app and in customer service with regard to this.

The latest version is worse. There’s a font problem that puts an extra space randomly around the letter “a” making it hard to read. The old version worked better.

With the latest update I get the cover and each article page only shows the headline in large black text on a while page. That’s it, no article. Nothing.
New app without the most needed features 2/5
Update: The font size has been fixed. The Last Read Article does do something, but only seems to work if you’ve just switched to the Daily Brief or something like that and want to get right back to the article you were reading. It does not remember your last read article if you close the app (or it gets closed for you), nor if you briefly switch to a different week’s issue.
The Week app is completely rewritten. This is good since the old one was a bit buggy. The most annoying thing about the old app is that it did not remember your place in the magazine. Many people complained about this in reviews. So is that fixed in this new app? No. It is not.
I can’t make the font as big as the old app. Important to those of us over 40.
The new app does not support the full screen size of the iPhone X. It also doesn’t let you get rid of the navigation bar on the iPhone so the space for reading is really small.
I had a lot of favorited articles in the old app and those are all gone.
I do prefer the way the new app lets you just have entire articles on one page instead of forcing you to scroll over several pages. But it can take several seconds to go from showing just the title of an article to showing the entire article. But you can’t increase the size of all of the pictures either. You can full-screen the images that are already large, but not the small images that are hard to see.
Oh, and why is the main library screen half filled with an ugly text banner telling me to login or restore my purchases after I have already logged in?
I really hope that this new simplified app is just a new foundation on which to build. A lot needs fixing.
App overhaul is hot garbage 1/5
Everything about the big update to this app is a step backward I'm usability. The menus are clunky and take more taps to get to the same place. The last read article function doesn't work properly, since it thinks the last article you read is the front cover of you've opened an issue. I can't even find the 10 Things You Need to Know Today section anymore, when it was a simple left swipe away in the last version.
I never thought that a update to this app would leave it less usable than the original version, but it certainly did. Please do more user testing the next time you decide to completely redesign this app. It needs a lot of work!

Articles load and then after a day or so they don’t load again. I have to delete, reinstall the app, restore purchases and then they load.

I am a long time subscriber to the week and I just love the format. The new updates are dreadful. Cumbersome to have to download issues again. Plus the new layout is inferior, with no overview. The latest problem I have is that articles no longer download. Because my subscription is through iTunes the tech support at the week refused to assist. I emailed the customer service desk and they said I need more storage on my iPad. When that did not work I got a new 32G ipad, and still no luck

The Week is a fabulous magazine. The app for the digital version has always had problems, however. I was excited to see that there was an entirely new version of the app. And then I tried using it…
How hard is it for someone to check a feature — like adjusting font size — before releasing an update? Seriously. This is the simplest function for an app for a digital publication. Come on folks! Show a little pride to n your work.

Issues Don’t Load After Update 1/5
After the latest update, issues no longer load. I can see the titles but the content never appears. Even issues I had already downloaded don’t load.

Now, even after you delete the app, and reinstall it to download an issue, you can only use it once. When you come back, no stories will load, just that spinning icon. It’s easy to download your latest issue. First, you have to delete the app. Then, reinstall and download your new issue! Love the new “you can’t find the index” feature. You swipe right, and all you see is a headline — like the Cheshire cat’s smile — then the comet finally loads. Also stunning: now Movies on TV” shows you last week’s movies you missed! An unmitigated disaster. Why did the side-index go away? Now I can’t find anything — where are the instructions? Reviews in App Store are not in chronological order.

I agree with some other reviewers who complained about the recent update. It’s absolutely horrible and often doesn’t even work. The content takes a long time to load and sometimes it won’t load at all. I’m a long time subscriber and reader so this is very disappointing. Please fix soon or revert to previous version of the app which I thought was great.

2 stars because of update, not content. Please bring back old table of contents. It remained there until you began reading articles. Just needed to tap on section you wanted. Now, tap to find it, then swipe up, down, past it, go back to it. Really? I just want to read, not play video games. Also, bring back tap on a word to Select, Look up, Copy. PLEASE. All Safari function have it, now you need to leave the app to perform other functions. Otherwise corn

How did the manage to screw this up so throughly?
My subscription to The New Yorker is still working just fine. But I must wait weeks until I get home to my print editions to read The Week.

I am a print subscriber who likes the option of reading The Week on my iPad. This latest update simply doesn’t work. I re-logged in with my account number, etc. and everything seemed to “take,” but the magazine won’t even fully download. What does download is an aesthetic mess. Big fail.

It amazes me how apps make downgraded “upgrades”. The Week is usually a trend setter and ahead of the curve, but their app “upgrade” follows suit of being worse instead of improved.
I can’t download until mid Friday, when I was getting it after 6pm on Thurs. I have to remove/reinstall the app to view each new edition. It is less user friendly & clunkier to manage. It does not connect to the dictionary. And, it is simply slower overall. I still ❤️ you “The Week”...just a little less.

Is there a way to give 0 stars. The old app was easy to navigate with smooth user interactions. The new app is slow to respond, stutters, and there is a large white instructional banner at the top that I cannot get rid of. As much as I love this weekly journal, I will not renew if the current user interface remains once my subscription is due for renewal.

Long time subscriber even before it was digital. The iPad app usability gets worse and worse with each update. I can open the current week’s issue, but all that comes up is the article title and then it just spins and spins and the article never actually comes up. Would you consider getting an UX expert to help you with design?

long time subscriber, love the publication. If your reading this to judge content i fully recommend. I give 3 stars purely bc of the work, the app itself is like. 1 star. Its rare that an update makes things worse but this did. Aesthetically its uglier and more clunky than the previous version like they removed the polish and sheen from the layout. One thing i always wanted was bookmarking as i force close my apps and always have to cycle back through. This version has it but it doesn’t actually work. I press the star but that does nothing at all. Even “last article read” has no clue what article i read so a big fat boo on that. Locking the options menu on the top is a terrible idea it should go back to only coming up on a long or force touch and preserve real estate. That criticism ties in to Night Mode, which was great but now, even though the article is in night mode the locked options menu on the top is still white...deal breaker no but it does show a certain laziness or lack of detail work on a finished product. This is a quality publication that we pay for willingly and even have the option to go digital only, so why wouldn’t we be treated with a high end application befitting of this rather than so junky app reminiscent of a free download circa 2008?
I was quite happy with TheWeek app until the most recent update. It is now impossible to use. It shows the title of articles but never the bodies of the indicated articles. As is, it does not even merit one star... it is worthless. Please restore the previous version.
