Superb detail 5/5
The maps fit the eye. When you’re in the boonies, that’s what counts. 👍
Topo mapping 5/5
This is the best app that I have purchased.it well worth the money.used it different times and it very accurate it never steered me wrong. Helped me discover lots of new location and different ways to get to them.so it gets a 5 Star rating in my book.
Much better than Gaia GPS or ViewRanger 5/5
Very Nice App
All i have to say for this one
Excellent app 5/5
I’ve tried a lot of these types of apps, and this is the best. By far. Excellent support too.
An amazing gps app that Steve J regularly improves. In addition to being useful in planning and on the trail, it is a joy to use!
Great app, involved developer! 5/5
There are a lot of mapping apps out there, and this is definitely one of the best. The mobile app is well-designed by someone who actually spends time in the backcountry, and tight integration with a full-featured desktop app is awesome. Most importantly, the developer Stephen Johnson is highly responsive to user comments & feature suggestions--a couple features I suggested were quickly added to the app in updates--outstanding! $50/year for full access to all high-res maps is totally reasonable, and the recent update to V5 is a big improvement. Thanks Stephen!
Free Version 5/5
Free version map resolution too corse to be usable.
Features work well.
Expect the high resolution maps with the paid version would make a superb package.
Great app 5/5
Great Topo app with the ability to download maps for offline use. Great customer support as well.
Good app, OLD information 3/5
This app is easy to use and helpful. However, some of the information is WAY out of date. For example, Smithville Lake (Missouri) is not shown but merely”under construction”. It’s been finished since 1979. If info was up to date, this would easily be five stars.
Best Topo Map App ever! 5/5
By Chuck Hodi
Why? Because (hill shading) is offered for USGF Cal Topo Maps for half the price of Gaia GPS, this is extremely beneficial if you’re doing off trail cross country exploration. Purchasing the Map Pass is highly worth it! Another plus, is that their customer service is very helpful! Don’t waste your time with other apps!
Best map app I've used 5/5
Great app. It shows interactive detail on more trails than other map apps I've used, but still a lot are missing. I will often have to trace my route beforehand in order to view stats pre, during and post-hike. I have one of the paid versions for the in-hike stats, and I am sure there are quite a few features I'm not taking advantage of.

Great for SAR 5/5
As a member of a K-9 SAR department this app is excellent for searches and for marking covered areas.
Great app! 5/5
By Matt Woodhouse
This is simple to use and very accurate. Nothing is full proof, but I hunt and hike deep in the Allegheny National Forest (Northwestern Pennsylvania) and this app has helped me to navigate back to my truck numerous times with no issues.
It’s perfect for marking areas of interest and recording tracks to follow up on later. I prefer the topography maps as they label areas and for $30 a year, you can have access to high resolution maps. Can’t beat it!
I would recommend this app to anyone who loves to just wander in the forest. Also, Steve is great at answering any questions, as I’m new to the smartphone and he was extremely patient with my relentless questioning
Have fun out there
Great app for those less clearly marked trails 5/5
I love to use this app for recording my own hikes, and for making sure I’m staying on the trail. Not all trails are marked the same, and this app works even without cell service. 👍🏼👍🏼
Best hiking map app 5/5
I use this app all the time, and it has more uses than I expected. I consider this an essential part of my toolkit.
Love it 5/5
Great on my home lake getting around
GPS and Print 5/5
Always know where you are. With this app you can download your maps to your iPhone and have a printed map from the app. I never worry about my iPhone dying because I have the printed maps. I print them a bit larger so I don’t have to use my glasses. The app lets you customize the size, choose between different maps and even overlay maps to get the look you want. I also use my iPhone to check my navigation skills while using the paper map. The app shows right where you are using its GPS on the trail. Never feel lost again.
Best Topo App I've used 5/5
By Ekim Kadnosel
This app allows me to use my legacy iPhone as a fully featured GPS. The maps are update regularly and the developer is readily available to address any questions or issues. Being able to download and print any number of topo maps is worth the price of admission. This has replaced all other mapping software I previously used.
Not much to say beyond fantastic. 5/5
I have been using this app for almost two years now and have used it in the USA from coast to coast Hawaii and even in Guam.
It has never failed to get me information I need to make it to the trailhead and into the backcountry.
There is sometimes a little learning curve to pick the right map city, suburbs or backcountry, but once I’ve made a decision I have never Ben disappointed.
I have used this app on Three of New Zealand’s Great walks and several day hikes just inside and out of Aukland.
And just recently used it just for grins at the Great Wall outside of Beijing, don’t need a map to follow the Great Wall. My only issue there was lack of gps coverage even with a bad elf plugged into my iPhone 7 Plus.
Keep playing with the map because every time I do, I seem to find something else that's new.
I’m a tried and true paper map hiker but love this app for the holes in paper map coverage or route changes in my wanderings.
Can’t wait to try out the new US Natural Map.
Very Disgusted! 1/5
By Matt Wharff
I paid for the upgrade and it’s nothing different than the free app. Waste of money and a rip off!
The Best There Is 5/5
By Jeff Fullmer
I have tried every other mapping program to help guide me in the Rocky Mountains and this one is the best. The subscription is completely worth it and the developer response is top notch. This app is especially handy for trail runners like myself that are trying to move quickly through the mountains. A lot of times I start on unfamiliar trails in the dark and have to go purely off this app. Easy to use, easy to share and absolutely love it!
Best app for hunting 5/5
This is the best app for hunting..not only for topo maps but aerials too. I’ve had a few issues and whenever I’ve sent in an email to support, Stephen the developer always gets back to me promptly. I subscribe every year and it’s well worth it. I love the caching feature. I’ve cached all my hunting areas and can view maps even without service.
Great Free App! 4/5
I’m not going to cover all the great features of the free version of this app because the hundreds of 5-Star reviews already have. I’m simply going to mention the two reasons my rating is only 4-stars:
1) No map legend. Either that or it is so hidden I can’t find it
2) A little disappointed with the map pass. After using the free version on a recent outdoor trip in Ontario, Canada (and very impressed) I decided to spend the money and pay for a map pass. I thought the more detailed maps would have additional information. So far however, the only difference I notice is the graphics are sharper when zoomed it. Yet in the free mode, even at low-res they were already totally usable. So not sure the pass was worth it for me.
All in all a great free app I would highly recommend.
Passes don't sync 3/5
By Topo Maps PRO
Great app but passes don't sync between devices or if you have to delete the app and reinstall it.
Very old topo maps 3/5
This app is a great, but the topo maps that the database uses are strikingly old - sometimes over 30 years old - which limits the practical usefulness. The trails are also drawn pretty sketchily. This is a pleasant planning tool, but no substitute for hikers who need an up to date map showing the latest features and precise trail routes.
Perfect planning tool 5/5
Easy to navigate and useful for pre-planning trips. Excellent detail.
Awesome map app! 5/5
The new game management unit boundaries are awesome! Thanks!!!
The selection of maps is incredible. Integration with open street map trails is amazingly handy! Ability to download all of the map types for off line access. Easily syncs across devices and great UI. I moved over all my waypoints and trails and deleted all the others! Keep up great work!
Quick info 4/5
Great when you need a quick Toto map.
Almost impossible to add Waypoints 1/5
The author elected to utilize a Google program to add waypoints. Called a KML. The software is free😇; however, the free version has limited resources. I have a boundary and it has multiple bends. Even though it can be entered as a polygon. No corner values are referenced. Also I have multiple points to visit. No the app for me.
Great App! 5/5
Interface is intuitive, customer support is excellent, and innovation is ongoing. The developer definitely likes what he is doing and it shows! I like the ease of making my own routes or using the existing routes and trails. Being able to print paper maps is huge as well.
Great app 4/5
I use it when I go mountain biking l drop a pin or just record my track. I know all about my ride and how to get back to my Jeep.
Best Topo App ever 5/5
By TVC Guy
The Pro version is unbelievable! Love that we can track our hike and save it for review later. The map clarity is spectacular at any zoom level. I use the app with Boy Scouts teaching them how to marry technology with a map and compass.
Great app 5/5
For anyone who bought an overpriced Garmin gps, this app is a savior. First if all the battery consumption is great. Over 7 hours it only used 33% battery in my iphone 6s. The maps are easy to read and trails are well marked. Ap keeps track of elevation gain mph and distance hiked
Great app 5/5
Hats off to the developer. Multiple map layers, contour lines, hi-Rez maps, excellent direction and elevation tracker, easy waypoint system: what's not to love. Best part is that you can download maps from your device and use offline with gps even if your cell service is out of range. The pricing for the pro features are excellent because they respond well with the year long or just seasonal outdoorsmen.
Very nice to have even for one hike on vacation. Print maps.
Essential tool 5/5
By Electric alice
A few minor bugs, but overall reliable and essential tool. Download maps in advance and locate your position anywhere your phone's gps works (almost everywhere, even remote places where there is no phone service.) I hike/backpack off trail frequently and have not been lost once in 2 years (several hundred miles) of using this tool. I still bring paper maps and a compass out of habit, but very rarely use them now.
Invaluable tool on our hikes! 5/5
Downloaded this app early this summer and it has gotten us out safely on a few close calls. We have barely touched the surface on its capabilities. Just upgraded for another year and look forward to learning all the little tips and tricks on one of our favorite apps. Just remember to plan and download before you get off line.
It really works!! 5/5
I recently did a 10 day off-road camping trip to the North Eastern Sierras where I took my jeep into the back country where I knew I would not have a signal of any kind. I preloaded the topographic maps into my cell phone and was amazed at how precise this mapping tool is. It was able to pinpoint my exact location at all times in areas where I would have otherwise needed to rely on a Garmin GPS with birds-eye imaging. Just make sure to download the maps prior to your trip. Amazing App!!
Great topo app 5/5
I have been using this for over a yr now. It is bear easy to use and extremely accurate. Earlier in the summer, I was looking to get on the PCT with a friend. We were going to start where the PCT crossed a dirt road. We weren't sure if it was going to be posted. As we approached the crossing, I opened the app and told my friend who was driving to stop when I saw the trail cross the road on the app. Looked out the window, and their was the trail. It is also quicker an more accurate than my Garmin GPS. GREAT FIND. M
Don't waste your money. 1/5
I have a iPad Air and it does not look good at all.
Never climb without it 5/5
By Lind In Idaho
We spend over 75 days a year climbing mostly In places without cell service- i never leave the house without my SPOT, my Sat Phone, and TopoMaps+ downloaded.....
By Tab and Scroll
I had questions about the app and developer responded quickly. Pretty impressive.
Free version has Offline Downloadable map chunks, decent resolution, and RELIABLE. GPS location compatible. I download the map chunks and use them with google earth when planning my 3-7 day hikes in "real" wilderness with only animal trails and forest service roads. I can use it for alternative routes (paths of least resistance) and emergency locations for rescue and water refill. ALWAYS share your path, and points of interest throughly with someone else, and be realistic. I can hike 4 MPH on clear roads and trails for 12 hours a day... But in the wild your paths are not straight, and the going is not that easy. For safety, I plan for 2 miles a day, and use the rest of the time for food, camp, and water. I don't want anyone fired from their job, hurt, lost, or freaking out wondering about the unknown if something were to happen to me. I'm a professional, and this a a simplified review. If you are confident, you are going to fail. Plan better. This tool helps.
Exactly as advertised! 5/5
By Geoplantagenet Unberto
I just returned from a week paddling in Quetico Provincial Park, a wilderness canoe area in Ontario, adjacent to the Boundary Waters in MN.
In the past, I've relied solely on a compass and map to navigate in Quetico, but this time I wanted a GPS backup (without buying an expensive GPS unit), i.e. a smartphone app.
I'd read some positive reviews of Topo Maps +, and contacted them with some questions. I ended up corresponding with Stephen Johnson, founder of Glacier Peak Studios.
He patiently walked me through the (simple and intuitive) set up, and guided me on how to download the maps I needed for Quetico into my smartphone, and explained how I could count on the phone's GPS capability even when I had no cell service or wifi in the bush.
Bottom line: five or six times last week, I opened the app (in Quetico, in the "middle of nowhere" with absolutely no cell or wifi service of any kind). Within 30 seconds or so, my phone was showing me EXACTLY where I was in high res detail (again, pinpointing my precise location on a particular lake, island, portage, etc.). Worked like a charm every time with no exceptions!
Cannot speak highly enough of the app or the support. If there were a six star rating, they'd get it from me!
Best app for planning and hiking 5/5
I've used (or tried to use) a number of online and iOS apps for planning backpacking trips, and Topo Maps+ is the most intuitive and easiest to use. In the field, it is also super easy, and I especially like the elevation profile for assessing climbing/descending progress and remaining effort. The new Mac version is also a very useful addition for tracing planned routes, whether on existing trails or cross country. I have found that the 'snap to trail' feature works much better than in other similar more popular apps (that I have abandoned due to ongoing frustrations.). I generally plan my trips on the Mac and sync to the iPhone. Organizing large numbers of routes and waypoints is easy with the categories feature. (I wish it was possible to sort waypoints by name.) I have used the import/export functions extensively and they are well supported in both the iOS and Mac versions. I have a Garmin inReach Explorer+ for emergency communication and as a navigational backup, and export from Topo Maps+ to load the inReach.
It's easy to download maps to the iPhone from the app for offline use while in the wilderness. Using the app intermittently while in the field doesn't consume much battery life in my experience.
The developer has been extremely responsive in fixing obscure bugs I have reported, sometimes even on the same day! Whether you're new to this type of app one even a long-term user of other similar apps, you would be well served to give Topo Maps+ a serious try. I have the Pro subscription and highly recommend it if you're an avid hiker or backpacker.
App is awesome for land nav 5/5
I use this app in conjunction with a bad elf gps unit on my iPhone and iPad to setup land nav courses and for plotting operation areas and waypoints on maps and it is so much faster and more accurate than by hand in most cases. I highly recommend this for anyone who uses compasses and maps frequently in the backcountry where cell reception is spotty or nonexistent. The Pro version is worth the money.
Great app works without cell service never get lost again!!
